Blackhole Custom ROM for Vibrant - Vibrant Android Development

Hey guys, I'm a developer on the Samsung Fascinate. I developed the Blackhole Custom rom for it. Basically what Blackhole is, is a stripped-down version of the stock rom with almost nothing pre-installed. After installing the base you are able to select what else you want to install, and what you don't. I'm thinking about branching out some and would like to know if there is anyone interested in something like this for the vibrant. If you want to see some details and feedback from users on the fascinate check out www.androiddoes.net/sonofskywalker3, or the Fascinate development boards here on XDA.
Heres an overview of how it works (on the fascinate, and eventually vibrant if there's anyone who wants me to port it):
Open ROM manager
Select Download ROM
Select Sonofskywalker3
Choose Blackhole Custom ROM
Choose a Bootanimation
Choose a Calendar App
Choose a Desk Clock app
Choose a Kernel
Choose a Launcher
Choose a Theme
Choose any extra programs, mods, live wallpapers, or other extras you want installed with the ROM
Reboot to install
And once it's installed, my section of ROM manager will be full of different flashable options, so if you decide you want to change to something else, you can.
This way you can have a phone with exactly what you want, and nothing else on it, to save space and battery life.
Since I don't have a Vibrant myself I will need a few Beta testers before I can release a public build. So please, if this sounds like something you would want on your phone, let me know. If there's no desire for something like this on the vibrant, just ignore this thread and it will get buried.
Thank you for your time.

It would be based on the stock JK6 froyo link sombionix posted.

This definitely sounds interesting. I would be happy to participate but I'll be out of the country for a few weeks.

Well thank you for your opinion, and i appreciate the offer. maybe when you get back it'll be ready to go =)

I might be intestested....sounds like a interesting concept for a rom.

I'm interested... I flash my vibrant when i find a suitable rom, but hate the bloatware. let me know...

count me in

my phone is jumping to have it..comeon...send me

ok, well there does seem to be some interest, so i'll get to work on this right away. If anyone wants to beta test for me i'll set up an IRC channel on freenode tonight and post the name in here when i'm ready to get started. as i said, I don't have this phone, so the first few versions are very likely to not work =) only join me if you are ready, willing and able to download and flash several attempts, understand ADB and odin (Just in case), and have a nandroid backup you can revert to. also it's best not to get your expectations too high just yet, because it works wonderfully in ROM manager, but doesn't quite shine when you have to install each package one at a time

I'm intrigued and interested. I'll give it a go

You can count me in, this sounds like an awesome project.

Hit me up I'm up for testing...

I'm intrigued as well would be happy to beta test this. m00n

Beta
I'll beta test. This sounds pretty cool

Sounds cool and if you can keep up with the mods that keep coming out this sound like it can really be something.

Like the idea
I hate bloatware i'm interested
Actually, if eventually the link could provide it in this menu format I think most advanced users would like it
I ll keep my eye out for it

Slap my mouth wide open, i'm in!!!

Just to give you guys an idea of the scope of the project for the fascinate, here is my existing rom manager manifest. if you don't understand everything that's going on, just mainly look for the stuff in quotes. I started this about a month ago and it's grown almost constantly. I'm still adding stuff to it also, and if this takes off i'd love for the vibrant port to get the same number of choices.

This sounds awesome. Make it happen!

[Q] ROM survey

Specifically for the Samsung Captivate, why did you choose the ROM you have currently flashed on your phone and why? If you know about more than one ROM, would you mind telling me what you liked and disliked about each? It would be very helpful to me.
Please post this on the right section...we want to keep development for actual development...
I'm using Bacon and Axura with Red Soul theme. I love both rom because they are fast!
You can find more information in the ROM thread itself.

I do apologize. Didn't realize I posted here and meant to do so in the Q and A.
Could we get a mod to move it, please?
I asked the same thing...in development.....got a tongue lashing for being in the wrong thread and was directed here....wish you all would make up your mind!!!
I was a flashing fool. Did my fair share of trials and tests.
I ran through the Cognition roms. Loved each one as they got better and better. Vodoo lagfix is pretty easy if you understand how and when to disable. Pretty straight forward and noob friendly.
Perception is fast, shiny and new. Based on the I9000, the roms seem to need a bunch of tweaks and changes to get it to run decently. I was never happy with the performance I got from these and well I never really used it to it's full potential either.
So for now I'm back on JH7. I mostly use the phone just as that, a phone. No real advantage in using a custom rom for that.
It still depends on what you are looking for
Similar to earlier post I used the cog roms for a while. Easy to install and stable.
Currently on perception, much faster then stock our cognition. It has a ton of options for tweaks, but is a little more dangerous because it is less idiot proof. I am on the build 3 release and to be honest I will not be changing my rom for singer time.

Currently running auxura. It is a fantastic rom.... but you need to have a little knowledge on how to flash and use cement.
Its a very complete rom with an awesome theme and it is quick once you set it up correctly.
But. I do live Cognition .... just waiting for another release before. I flash back to it again lol.

I'm using and loving di11igaf's ROM. I used many variations of Cognition and I really appreciate it for bringing me into the world of custom ROMs, but the last version (2.3B6) seemed slow in comparison to AXURA and di11igaf's ROM. I really like the theme and speed of di11igaf's ROM.
Thanks for all the replies! I keep learning more and more every time I check this board out. I'm an ex iOS user and decided to move to Android and everything is tons different, very open, in fact. I think I'll continue to do more research on all the different ROMs and builds and make a little database for myself based on my research and decide from there. Then again, I'm sure the only way to know what I want is to flash each one.
I have yet to see any rom to match the speed of a i9000 based Rom. I have tried almost all of them and always come back to i9000 ROMs as they have the features I want and the best speed. Of course we all have different priorities.

[Q] a ROM with "Less Bling" ?

*deep breath* I apologize in advance to the mods if this starts off yet another ROM flamestorm, but here goes.
I was running the original leaked froyo build, but it was having issues with slowness and just not being responsive, so I decided to look into something more up to date for my phone.
Did a bunch of quick reading and decided that Perception seemed to be rich on features, and being on beta 9 a good history of active dev support, so I loaded it up.
...
what I got reminded me of something a PC warez group would put out for a keygen app. I don't want to see an advertisement for the dev on the lock screen, etc. Don't want to put down the efforts the dev(s) put into the release, but it's got waaaaay too much bling for my taste.
Can anyone give recommendations for a ROM that's solid, and actively maintained to add in new features to benefit it - that doesn't have a bunch of l33t bling?
Once again apologies if this caused headaches for the mods, but asking general consensus that does keep current on dev for this device and explaining what I don't want seems to be an efficient way to do this.
Thanks
Other than that advertisement on the lockscreen did anything else bother you?
you CAN flash different lockscreens
All custom roms have their own personality. I think based on your comments you may like assonance. Be aware though that the top bar had a ginger bread look.
Axura is nice but the boot screen does say axura
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Assonance. No advertising anywhere that I've seen, and it's a very good ROM.
Sent from my Android using the power of my dreams.
to be honest, the entire procedure of loading up that rom annoyed me from the beginning. Between some female robot voice saying things I couldn't quite understand while it was doing...something. To the huge logo screen that came up during the load/boot process, to the additional of a dozen or so urban-sounding ringtones that weren't part of the original leaked froyo I was running (yes I know I can go in and delete any offending ringtones) to the fact that it seems any stock wallpapers that weren't garish were removed (solid colours, please?) To the animated advertising on the lock screen, which pushed me over the edge.
I admit I was guilty of not researching in depth, I might have known in advance what I was getting in to. My phone was getting so chunky in just navigating screens and attempting to make phone calls, I needed something. And while I was going thru the hassle, I decided I'd try to get something solid loaded on it.
My phone is my workhorse, I just want something solid, functional and dependable. I have no desire to show it off. I have a Viewsonic G-Tablet that is my playtoy that's I customize and put all the bling on.
But my phone, I want it lean, mean and a bit more functional than the stock Android.
All i900 roms have those ring tones.
Wall papers are all over the internet
As mentioned assonance had no advertisement, or branding
The voices on boot are part of voodoo. The lag fix. really it is a comfort thing. as long as she says something every so often you know things are progressing. Without it you will be wondering why your phone is taking 6 minute to boot

Give the Devs a break. They put a lot of time into making this ROMs and they don't get paid, they do it cuz they like it. You don't have to rant about it, just uninstall it and get something else. And like mcord11758 said, you can customize the lockscreen and ringtones and you can get any wallpaper you want from the internet. An the voice thing only happens the first time you boot up when its applying the lagfix.
I have only tried Cognition (beta 6). There is a boot screen that says cognition, but that's it. You can change boot screens if you want. I feel its a great mix of vanilla and touchwiz. Its super fast, and been amazingly stable. Those voices only happen once, like others said it let's you know you're not bricked, still working.

The whole point to flashing a custom rom...is to have a good working solid base to work with if you choose to leave it as it is... Since these are Android phones that can easily be modified to your liking (after all isn't that what you are trying to do ? )...and since you are loading a custom rom that has tons of people giving their input on how it looks and what features it has in it...it's really time for you take responsibility of what you are posting and to stop expecting a plain vanilla rom when you can easily see how far along it is in development that one is.
Learn to read and research better before you flash a full featured rom with tons of customization in it. They all have change logs on the OP for you to see what is in it...and if you don't understand what your flashing...then perhaps you should refrain from doing anything like that until you are familiar enough with it. You can post questions about all the roms if you don't understand it's features...you can also read the thread and what folks are saying about it...even if it is as long as it is...This way...you become familiar with it..and how it was developed over time.
Complaining about a very popular rom's features or it's designer because you didn't take the time to research what exactly it has in it or does is childish at best.
If you find my post offensive...or flaming you...I am sorry...but no one twisted your arm to modify your phone..just as no one can force you to read and research before you attempt to modify your phone...but you will be better off doing just that and to learn what it is your attempting...and wanting on your phone...before you flash anything. All of the roms have different features..modems..lag fixes..some are over clocked..some aren't...some have talking voices at boot up..some don't...all this information is available to you....BEFORE you do anything...
Mac
Protip: The majority of the custom rom's are not built for use, but for the dev themselves. If they like it that way, and you don't, too bad.
That being said, CyanogenMod is probably the only one that fully fits your requirements, as it's built from AOSP sources, rather than a modified samsung rom.

No Frill Thrill is now Doomed Froyo coming along slowly

Well after being out of town for a week and not having my laptop I am finally home. Work has already began but, I am torn as to which way I will go. Right now I have a mix of Thriller 1.0.3 and ThaizD and I am thinking about ditching that and modding CM7 which will be a lot of work to get things working correctly. I am running my rom right now and posting from the XDA tapatalk app. There is still a lot of tweaking that needs to be done. I haven't even touched the theme yet, just a few tweaks.
I will hopefully be releasing a beta within the next week or so as long as I have enough time, been very busy lately. Just thought I would get the word out. So far everything is working well, which isn't saying much since I haven't really done any experimenting yet.
As of now I am calling it "No Frill Thrill" because it is going to be a very stripped down rom. I am trying to focus more on speed, battery, memory, GPS and theme. Users will be able to just restore data and get everything they had back.
Guess that's all the info I have for now. I will post updates now and then to let you guys know how progress is going.
I look forward to seeing what u can come up with. I'm sure everyone else will appreciate any advancements we can get. Really looking forward to the possibility of new kernels and more radios that can be flashed down the road. New theming alone would definitely make the UI better. This has got to be one of the ugliest and worst designed UI to come on a phone.

Yeah, it will be a bit before I get anything done. Need to setup my laptop and take a nap lol Im an old man and if I work while sleepy Ill screw everything up... so nap time then I set to work.

I think we all agree that we appreciate any work that is done to make this phone/any phone better. I have a high appreciation for all of the developers.
While you're napping and rom creating, I'll be playing...

i would love to help i dont no anything about programming but i am a fast learner i built my first computer from the ground up when i was 12 years old is there anything i could learn that would help with the developing also i dont know know if anyone here likes miui it would be great if we could get that on our thrill thanks love to hear from you
I might need some testers for pre release but that wont be for a while. Progress is coming along nicely though I will post some screenshots and a little bit more info once I get further. Right now I'm not happy with it enough to release any shots because things will be changing. Still not sure which kernel i am going to use nor am I sure of the theme right now looks kind of shoddy.
And just so you know, I have a lot going on so progress on my rom is slow things will be a little less hectic in the next week so things will really pick up then.

im definetly also willing to test... if something goes wrong i can use adb well and fix it.. im not a noob so you dont gotta worry bout that.. lol

Well things are picking up now. I have added some extra tweaks to not just the build.prop but a few other places as well. Not getting too involved in this because GB is coming soon so this is just for fun and to improve our phone while we wait. Trekfan will hopefully be designing a nice theme/ui so thank him as well he hasnt actually agreed but I think from his offer in his last post its safe to say he will.
Lastly I think there will be a name change...

Well here's some screens of certain parts, pay no attention to the status bar I haven't really messed with that yet, like I said things are going slow but will pick up soon.
The first shot is of the dialer which I'm going to make all the buttons like #5 and smooth out the graphics and make them look much better.
Second shot is of the pop-up windows green glow border and orange load circle. This will also be changing in the future.
Third shot is just something stupid, changed the lock pattern circles to little android guys.
I have also edited the messaging app and will be doing much more once I get a few days of free time.
Name changed to Doomed Froyo
I cant wait to try it. Sounds like a good ROM. Got to give props to the developers for taking time developing apps for the Thrill.
Looks great, but the five button does look sort of ugly IMO, otherwise amazing job.

Oh and if Trekfan is making a theme then things are going to probably look completely different still haven't heard anything yet. I am really waiting to see if that's going to happen so I have an idea of a color scheme, I am very particular to the green and orange though... something about green orange and black they go together so well in my eyes.

WooHoo thanks to Trekfan for putting together a very nice framework, it isn't quite done yet but what is there is looking very fancy!
Things that have been done:
Speed Tweaks
Memory Management Tweaks
Camera/Video Tweaks (Still working on some settings)
GPS Tweaks
DNS Tweaks
Ads Blocked with Host file
+ More
Things to do:
Add Wallpapers/Ringtones/Notification tones/Fonts +extras
Add extra apps (cpu master/XDA forum app + others)
Update Apps to newest versions
Finish framework theme (THANKS A TON TO TREKFAN)
Remove any bloat (always last thing for me to do....)
Finish altering contacts.apk, mms.apk and lghome.apk (coming along slowly I have been neglecting other things working on this stuff lol this may wait until the full release after beta)
There are many more things that will be done, screenshots of the INCOMPLETE theme will be coming today and hopefully we can have an official beta release this weekend. I hope everyone enjoys this ROM as it is meant to not only enhance our devices but also give everyone a bit of variety as the development on this phone is pretty stale. One thing that I hope to do is release flashable "themes" or frameworks so once you download the ROM you can then just download and flash .zips in CWM and have a variety of looks.
Another big THANK YOU goes out to gtg and all his work on the Thriller ROM and all the other guys over on the O3D forum keep up the good work everyone.
1. Screenshot of the plain desktop, things will be changing like the default wallpaper and the look of the launcher will be changed on post beta release.
2. Shot of the pulldown notification area.
3. Shot of the new check boxes, buttons have been changed as well.
4. Shot of the toasts, pop-ups, you can see the loading wheel in the top right and a bit more.
Things here and there may change, also the battery indicator goes from blue (full) to green to orange to yellow to red (low) there has been a lot more changed besides what you see so everyone thank Trekfan for all his hard work putting this together. THANKS TREK
Also, once this is released it will be in the Development section as of right now this is just general stuff that's why I posted it here, if the mods wish to move this thread to Development so be it and I will just update first.
For those of us who have bought the xda premium app... The one in the rom doesnt uninstall properly... Pain in the butt.. Haha just sayin... Yeah I need to fix acouple of things in the theme... I got a few inconsistincies... Will work on it tomorrow morning and afternoon... And will upload, with some new screenshots

(Suggestion) Things that a ROM Must/should/could have!

I made this thread based on what i think ROM's must or should have 4 an average use
- STABLE, with no sd unmounting or unespected reboots
- Of course, it must read the SD, also, would be good to have an file manager, light like OI file manager, even if its aosp, cause some of us stores our apps on SD as backups
- All kind of wireless networks, GSM mainly, WiFi, USB and Radio for those who listen!
-Clean Launcher to let the user set it 4 his needs
-mic, dialer, dial UI, messagin working
-BT handset / and jack working ofc
-speaker
-Good or the laster battery it can be
-DSP or louder sound
-Not too laggy UI or ROM
-OC could be added as well, but it is not really needed, unless the ROM its a bit laggy
-Working camera, cause we all need to take a picture often, even when its about our studies (I take pics to ppt )
-LG stock apps like Alarms, calendar, energy control, Google apps, voice, weather and news
-Of course it'd be cool to have youtube to watch somes How-To about anything
-Rooted, its not TRULY needed, but lets face it, we all want it, or some doesn't know how, or just cannot reach it!
All those things should be on any ROM, unless its a BETA or A release with KNOWN bugs which will be FIXED as ppl/users detects then
Suggestions:
-LG IME keyboard
-Astro File Manager (I make apps backups from Astro)
-Docs to go
-Touchpal / Swipe
-XDA forum app to follow our respective roms thread or any thread we want
-OC and Swapp utility/support
Guess thats the bassic things users are looking 4 + performance, i also know not ALL roms will have but it could work as a guide or a task list of what to do with a rom in development, also after making a rom, it'd be cool to get a test period with some users, or all of them to fix possibles bugs and then make it clean!
Feel free to post any other thing u think its needed or any suggestion
Dont see point of this topic... dont rom like, dont use it.
Sent using Tt.
Taking that as main duty, just sug
You sound as though you know how to build a rom without all this probs trust me its alot harder
I do not know actually, just attached them as task to be done or something, if a rom complishes most of the features, and gets real stable, it could be as an Official one! Repeat, its just a suggestion...
Yes I know
Really, this topic makes no sense. You're indirectly saying that you want a fully working ROM. If any ROM has a missing File Manager, tell that respective developer. And Developers know what should be working in their ROMs and even they want their ROMs to be bugless!
If you want any added apps, you can add them yourself. Instead it's better that the ROM is as clean as possible
No sd unmounting or unexpected reboot? i get that with LG's stock kernel.
Developers here aren't LG software engineers, we don't pay them to develop roms etc... We don't have the rights to expect everything working perfectly anyways. LG makes mistakes as well.
LG stock apps require porting because those apps does not work standalone without LG's framework.
Yeah, the camera takes crappier shots than the 'lowest end' 1mega pixel cybershot my parents gave me which was bought in 2001. But I'd agree that some users without image quality expectations would want a working camera
Root is needed by most users for integrating apps into system file, debugging and modify rom itself on phone. If you're the one who plays with your phone and thinking how amazing it is, well...... *no comment*.... 'no life'.
Not going to comment on overclock becouse I don't truly need it and will buy a new phone soon.
Root explorer allows root access, not astro.
In combination, suggesting is; add your own apps. You're not paying the developer neither does your opinion or the way you use your phone apply to everyone else on xda.
@mrandroid
lol nice avatar!

don't feel insulted! we are just pointing you in the right way! everyone makes mistakes!
like me when i sent a pm to joost for the first time asking him which is the best rom as i am new to android and confused things like swiftdroid quarx etc.

Design?

Hello guys im a developer from the Kindle Fire, I recently released a new type of app called Glazed Mods, in which that served as a place to download all the compatible tweaks for the current rom it was running (Obviously my own Glazed ICS Rom), as well as download updates for it. Well i thought that i might as well bring this rom over to the nexus 7, as soon as i get my hands on one i will release a preview-beta as i have no way of testing this. Enough of that, lets go back to the app, Recently i closed the website it was being hosted on in order for me to update and make some changes to it so it would be compatible, as im going to be porting over my rom to this device i thought why not make the Glazed Mods app available to use both on the Kindle Fire and Nexus 7. The problem is i need a really good idea and design for the overall UI.
You can look at the current ui over at my app screenshots. Cm'on guys give me a really good design idea, and what kind of things to include in it. Would love any help i can get. EXAMPLE, Thanks.

I don't have any great ideas or anything to help you, but welcome to Nexus 7! Always good to see a Dev snooping around
Well, I always appreciate a "uniform" look across the device. Google's design guidelines for 4.0/4.1 help out with that- http://developer.android.com/design/index.html
But it's up to you if you want to go for something more unique!
The problem with that is that the app is not all code, its code to launch the website it renders to the device, and download manager. It loads a website as a view, so i have to make a image by image, like the button to download all by scratch which is a big problem for me, and would take lots of time.
