I am a new member but have already used this site a lot.
I am interested in rom development for the touch and would be grateful if I could recieve some guidance.
If you have any tips or suggestions I would be grateful.
Thank you

just curious,
are you try to porting from another device or taking Fresh Froyo into another taste.... ?
maybe you could ask some guidance from n2rjt or scooter, another devs looks like has left the vogue.
but anyway, nice to see you trying to keep the vogue live.
good luck.

haha are you talking about me?
if you going to be working with fresh froyo
my tool set is alot of reading and patience, along with 7zip and recently apkmanager (none of my .apk manager stuff was using on vogue)
even my hero stuff has used a very similar tool set
well, this development on vogue seems to freeze for about weeks.
and seems like you are taking your eyes too into another device you have.
hope you are taking your part again into rom development.
compare to another froyo build in another device, Fresh Froyo have a very small size.
so if anyone could porting from another device then stripped them into a very small size ( get rid all unuseable stuff ), it would be nice.
And i think would be so refreshing to have some sense in our froyo.

you know for a noob you sure have helped alot if it wasnt for you we wouldnt have facebook and twitter sync working
If you want to compile, I'd start at the top of the Fresh Froyo thread.
Follow the instructions left by dzo: they still work.
First you can get an android build, then keep reading the same thread to figure out how to build the kernel.
I started that way. First I was building my own builds of Fresh Froyo, because dzo used to commit changes almost daily. Then, I found something that didn't work well enough, and I started researching on how it worked, and how to fix it. I have made a lot of mistakes along the way, but happily most of them have been in the privacy of my own build.
If your tastes go more toward kernel development, give read the kernel thread on the Vogue forum, then l1q1d's threads on the Kaiser forum.
Oh, in case you didn't figure it out yet, the Kaiser, Vogue, and Polaris all use the same builds and kernels, with configuration and driver differences.
Ok..
Thanks a lot
I have thought about porting and probably what I'll do besides using fresh froyo
So to help me with that
What devices are similar to the Vogue/Polaris/Kaiser that may be candidates for some rom porting or should I just try any rom(with the same resolution)
if i'm not mistaken,
myn's eclair based on dream, incubus have super hero, and i think sapphire and tatto could be possible to port too.
2 days ago, i try to load wildfire rom with sense, vogue can load it but still keep rebooting. its very unstable. (i know a lot of ppl say it is impossible) but when i saw my vogue can load it...this vogue is incredible.
if you want to give it a shot, just don't forget to change the BOOTCLASSPATH.
I'm still learning so could you remind me what BootCLASSPATH is?
for "what is" bootclasspath, you can search for it, i can't explain it better than the devs here.
in other device, the bootclasspath is inside the boot.img, so if they want to edit it, they need to unpack the boot.img.
in our vogue, bootclasspath describe in sysinit.rc,
because that i want to load sense framework, so in bootclasspath, i should edit it to export the appropriate .jar.
see below :
export BOOTCLASSPATH /system/framework/core.jar:/system/framework/ext.jar:/system/framework/framework.jar:/system/framework/android.policy.jar:/system/framework/services.jar:/system/framework/com.htc.framework.jar:/system/framework/com.htc.android.pimlib.jar:/system/framework/com.htc.android.easopen.jar:/system/framework/com.scalado.util.ScaladoUtil.jar

big jump today,
no restart, no bootloop. now, i still play it, though it run to much slow -really really sloooow, let see if i can tweak this build, but i'm already too excited.
i'll do some test to this.
camera working, camcorder no FC but still the phone won't sleep either though the screen is off. i'll give you my file if you get lost or something.
what build? i sent you a pm. it should be a surprise for this community.

ultraprime: I've been following the progress as closely as possible. Can't wait to see Android on my Tilt. So far, a dev on the Android Google Group has managed to dump the filesystem: http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/277a73b32a02f26a?hl=en . Great, but my Tilt is not already running Linux.
I imagine it won't be long now! Do you have experience with Linux on HTC Devices? It's something I've been reading about but haven't taken the leap yet.

You need a running linux kernel on the wizard first. The main roadblock
is the CPLD register access over i2c.
Here's a recent android presentation video:

Nice!
Discussing android porting now is IMHO completely pointless at the moment... It does not exist yet...
Maybe this time next year...

it may be pointless but good idea to talk about.

Android would be great! What are the plans?
Hi,
I think this would be a good project, and in fact it might be helpful for supporting and advertising the new platform if Android could be used on already existing phones as well. I would definitely install Android on my Wizard rather than staying with Windows Mobile (even though TNT/its right provides great WM builds).
Are there any plans to port Android on existing HTC phones? I am sure that the Wizard is fast enough. Actually, from the technical side there was not much progress since then. Even in 2007 HTC and others presented phones with TI OMAP chip running on 200 MHz, which is sufficient. And the display resolution is stuck to 320x240, unfortunately. In fact, I plan to stay with my Wizard until I can get a phone that replaces my Notebook! Therefore, Android would be welcome meanwhile ...
What are your thoughts?
Eriol
Hi!
I have an HTC trinity since a year now and I've been waiting for a linux port since then.... I swear, if I was a coder I would start a project yesterday... but I'm just a sysadmin and the only code i can piss is script.
Windows mobile is an insult to such a nice device (flashing to WM6 is nearly useless.... and sometimes worst) so to me it would be great to just have a better OS on it.
To be straight, when I bought it I was certain that someone would have been able to port Linux to it so Android....would be perfect.
Of course i'll be happy to help in any way if someone sees a role for my "resources" :-D
the screenshot posted are ugly but the presentation of android that i saw on youtube are beautiful. its got all those iphone kind of transition effects and its a O.S so it would be great . In windows the emulators provide transition effects and finally reveals the traditional windows os.
News update:

I have a working kernel + Android combo
but as of now, it's pretty much useless..can't really interact with it.
Will post a guide/ howto if anyone needs it.
kudos to the guys on #linwizard!
Maybe we should keep stuff from linwizard were?
Just asking whats the status of getting android on the wizard??
( unfortunatly im a non coder so cant realy help in setting it up but i would help in testing it)
But one thing im really intrested in is getting linux running on the wizard tht would be awesome but unfortunatly the linwizard project seems to have slowed down considerably.Anyway cheers to the developers so far and heres hoping a breakthru comes soon.

Either way you still completely disregarded the search feature and the stickies indicating to look through those threads before creating a new one. To answer your question. Short answer: No. Long answer: Search.

The answer to your question has already been discussed/answered before. If you want a comprehensive answer, then ask in the Q&A subforum (or in the Hero build thread). My answering you here would only propagate the notion that this is the correct subforum to be posting questions in new threads, which it is not.
four spam replies when one gets the point across.... I wonder which is worse, the poster or the barrage of "use search" after it;
If you mean actual porting, it can be done. You'd basically have to reverse engineer the apks to get them to work on the regular google framework. It should be a little easier now with JF's tool to dissasemble dex files. You can't look at the actual code, but just looking at the function and class names should give you an idea of what they do and how to code an equivalent function for when a certain apk makes a call, then you can either;
1. remake the apk, but using google's regular APIs or,
2. just move the apk, and make your own framework that passes those requests to the appropriate API handler if it exists within the google framework, if not, then make your own with either java or the just-released C++ builder. Kind of like WINE does.
I've always thought the best option is to just make comparable versions of the apks that run on the default google framework, it can be done, it's just exactly the way aHome and other home replacement apps do it, better and faster too. And for example, there are replica Hero widgets out there that look and behave much like their real counterparts, again, without requiring any of hero's libs or frameworks.
If people want real TouchFlo working on the phone, then we need real development to happen and actually make these programs instead of just taking the already built files (which were never meant for the Dream in the first place) and just trying to make them work.
Jubeh.. that was a great response... it really helped me to understand things i was curious about or never even thought about... I am no programmer.. just a G1 lover.. lovin to learn about my phone anyways great reply..
sorry for the second post, but i didn't want to edit the wall of text and have this ignored;
also, if you like the hero look (because, other than the beautiful app integration that hero and rogers roms share, the only difference is the eye candy), you should try Tehseano's OpenHome hero theme. There's several widgets too in the market for twitter, facebook, and other apps that are standard in hero. It won't look EXACTLY the same, but functionality will be similar and it works on Ion.

Agreed, You can tell them to search but atleast provide an answer...If you just say search all you're doing is bumping the thread up
Regardless of whether "Search" should have been used or not (I am a huge prponent of "Search" owning many forums of my own) this thread needs to stay alive. Being that Hero is deep down just another 1.5 ROM with a new UI on top this should be possible. I have pulled and attempted to install a few (Footprints and Social Network Provider) apk's but get the standard error regarding the app not being able to be installed with the ROM. If we can figure out how to integrate certain features of Hero into a Cupcake build the community will benefit greatly.
Hi,
here's the GT7 theme we've been working on with ElCondor. We cancelled it hoping to work on a much better project in the future. We provide the theme 'as is', no fixes will be released, there won't be any support. It's only for VGA devices with Sense 2.1 (kimi_sae_ireba port). The theme contains my CompactSense mod.

Looks very cool! actually, i like it more than GTX, because for me, black is much more stylish than plain white. I will try to cook a rom for hd2 with sense 2.1 to try it. (still not sure if its possible).

This project could be embraced, as it is an absolute superb mod!
Got tired of all the CM updates, each one breaking something different than the previous.
I'm sure at some point I'll do another modded ROM but I really do need something that is _reasonably_ stable.
Sure there'll be those who say "I've never had a problem"....good for you! I have followed many advice methods from many people. Hell, there have been some who have taken a bit of a written beating from my vents of frustration, and they still talk to me True dedication. On the flip side, if you ask a complete and intelligent question on Cyanogen's IRC channel, you'll get ignored, despite his wiki saying go there as one of the steps before reporting a problem (Hey Cyanogen, I'd like to report that the IRC channel is broken for anyone looking for help....:/ )
Been through the ringer with CMs and kinda sore over it. Will check other ROMs down the line because I've exhausted enough energy with this one.
Thanks for all your guys help. There are a few saints amung the 'uber coders'
We all owe Cyanogen a debt of gratitude for his work and how it has inspired others.
However, not all roms are created equal and of course a Full wipe before flashing any type of NEW rom onto your device is the key to success.
Super D is definitely where its at if you want the best of everything the HTC Dream/G1 has to offer, see my signature for the correct version.

Super D really was one of the fastest roms for me, but may I ask why you recommend 1.9.3 over 1.11?
OP, your sig says that you are running firmware 2.2. There is no stable 2.2 rom out there (CM6 is still in release candidate status...). If you want to use CM, stick with 5.0.8 it has less bugs.

I agree I've never liked cyanogen's ROMs. However, they are better than stock. He's also a damn good dev and most other ROMs have some bits from his work in there. Super E latest is what I'm on now. It's a piece of work, and the most stable Eclair I've found. However, if you want a pretty much guaranteed stable ROM, always go Donut. I like the features in Eclair, but nothing will compare to Donut on these devices in terms of speed and stability. That's just my opinion, though.
This is a personal project to see how far you can take Android theming.
So far this theme is still WIP, and I won't release anything before all the icons in the status bar is themed. Graphics is done by Fritjof, the second half of Coly design.

i understand the point .. but nothing is really "amazing" about this theme.
looks like another rendition of the simplistic psd's that were released.
To each their own, what u may find mundane another would describe as amazing. It doesn't have to have the most eye candy, but a well thought and flowing theme which in my opinion this does. Each person is entitled to their opinion and mine is that this is an amazing theme. Simple and clean.

i understand the point .. but nothing is really "amazing" about this theme.

So amazing for you is if I built my own launcher, clock and the whole Android UI?
Of course have I used other applications to skin, that's by far the easiest method.
And nothing is "stolen", it's made by hand - even the wallpaper is
edit: what about these themes? They also uses Launchers you can download on the internet and clocks and widgets as well. I suppose they are nothing special then?

@ KnightMAREcrow : exactly, its just a matter of opinion. we are all entitled.
@ Briix : first and foremost as i mentioned, it wasnt to stir anything up, as i will reiterate its just a matter of opinion and as i said in this case, i wasnt wowed. Now going forward and if in fact you'd like to be technical, no those works didnt wow me either. OH and never once did i mention that any of the items were stolen i simply said all items or something extremely similar can be found via the internuts.
mentioning you made all by hand really does nothing for me either..CONGRATS, you have a good amount of time on ur hands.
Now as i mentioned, and clearly was speaking in reference to two of the three links posted, they are merely differentiations of the original psd's released. which is where "i" see this was "looking"
do u need to recreate the wheel, no. Do u need to simply add different treading maybe a thicker whitewall and have a longer life span to make it better..yes! What i consider "special" may be mere childs play to another. U sitting there and taking all to heart is pointless..never once said i didnt like, just wasnt amazed.
cool, to each their own.
back to topic. what interest me the most is the status bar. its as its a true "minimal" i have a g1 and i would gladly support you in any way i can (cept cash)
This looks really interesting and very nice!
