[Q] Just about to go buy my Evo and then... - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm about to go buy an Evo today and I'm just about to leave and I get an email notice from BestBuy saying the the new Nexus S is going to hit stores soon and I stop...is it even worth buying an Evo now or should I hold off!? I got my Hero a few months before the Evo came out because I needed a new phone and now I am due for an up-grade but should I hold off, will Sprint release something soon that blows the Evo out of the water?
Anyone have any insight?

Well, I'm hoping the Nexus S comes out on Sprint. I'd like a high end phone, but no matter how many times I hold one, the Evo just seems too big.

Nexus S will probably NOT be coming to Sprint, though I can envision Samsung releasing Touchwiz versions eventually (well, maybe). As for Sprint coming out with something better than the EVO sooner than later, well, who knows, besides them. You can always just get the EVO, and if something better comes along (by IF I mean definitely, as that's how technology works obviously) soon, resell it and pay maybe $1-150 tops out of pocket.

well what's really the diff. between the nexus one and the nexus s....snapdragon vs hummingbird.....what else...second camera on nexus s? and htc vs samsung?
cause i know nexus one +custom rom = off the chart benchmark results.....too bad sprint can't use it....

Try the Epic, it's smaller.....

Sprint is coming out with the Evo Shift, which is a smaller Evo on January 6.

Well I like the size of the Evo so no sense in waiting for the smaller one. Looks like I will just get the Evo and then figure out how to get CM6 on it lol.

Nexus S is going to t-mobile, unless you get it unlocked. It's not much of an upgrade from the Nexus 1, front facing cam but not as good as EVO I believe, also there's no microSD card its all 16gb internal. No touchwiz. Oh yea, and its a samsung.
As much as I want to upgrade I'll wait for the feb/march batch of phones, I don't want to drop $529 for a phone that will be outdone in a major way in as little as 2-3 months.

It's a faster processor, at least. Lack of MicroSD is really dumb, don't really understand the thinking behind that one myself. It is a Samsung, but yeah, no Touchwiz is a positive, the GPS issues the Galaxy-S series seems to have been plagued with have apparently been ironed out with (at least I think I read that.. maybe don't quote me on that), and since it's a developer phone it'll be dogfed the latest updates from Google, also a big plus (especially with future implementation of NFC and some other more behind the scenes stuff like that).
However, still interested in how the reviews and general reception of it turn out, especially since T-Mobile already has the G2 and MyTouch 4G, both really nice phones on their own. Also, this news makes me really happy: http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/08/evo-shift-4g-aka-htc-knight-speedy-shows-up-in-accessory-pic/
Sprint-branded Desire Z? Probably the best phone to have on the carrier if that pans out sooner than later.

Other issues with the Nexus S I've heard around the webz:
1. No LED notifications
2. Only 480p video recording

I don’t think any of the Galaxy S phones have LED notifications.

I'm not so much worried about whether the Nexus S will be coming to Sprint I am worried that there might be something coming from Sprint that will make the Evo look like junk. I got my Hero thinking it was top dog and months later I was kickin' myself in the ass. And now that the Evo has established it's dominance I am afraid to jump on the bandwagon incase something superior hits.

Well, it looks like the "Knight"/"Speedy"/"Evo Shift 4G" should be announced sometime sooner than later. Since it'll be a Sprint-branded Desire Z/G2 seemingly, I'd say that's worth holding out for.

yeah that's what I keep reading but it's smaller and a slider...neither of which I hold in high regard.

My close friend works for sprint they are getting the htc Knight aka baby evo 4g which has NO front facing camera and is not better then the EVO. That's all they are telling sprint employees right now. Everything else is just rumors and wishes. I also have a friend who works for t-mobile(chick I'm messing around with lol) who says tmo is getting the nexus s they already have some accessories for it in the back and the specs are pretty much same as nexus one but WITH a front facing camera. Biggest downfall is that its a Samsung so need I say more about that company.

It's already known Nexus S is hitting T-Mobile. Also, if the EVO Shift is the Desire Z (can't see it NOT being it), then it will be better than the EVO (second generation processor, bettery battery life as a result, faster, etc). I guess we will see, but yeah.

Maybe battery life but I'm sure the evo would hold its own; this phone having only internal storage makes it just as bad as an iPhone no deal. Also I'm not going crazy over desire z stats anyways :rolls eyes:

[Q] EVO vs EVO SHIFT 4G

which one would you get? i cant wait any longer seeing as how my hero broke. do you think there will be lots of devs working on the shift?
the shift isn't out and hasn't been announced yet, if you need a phone now you get the evo
we know a lot of the specs of the shift though. the processor is the same as the g2 which is better than the evo and so is the gpu. im mainly worried about the devs. seeing as how evo has a very active section. i dont know whether the shift will get any.
Jan 9th appears to be the best guess release date based on leaked documents.
What it comes down to, is if you want a physical keyboard or not. The internals will be different, but nothing drastic. Lots of working being done on the EVO, so I dont think you'll go wrong either way.
The Shift's screen is too small and has too much extra space under the buttons for my liking. Design fail.
the shift will be able to be clocked to 1.9ghz which is crazy. but i think the evo will be better in the long run with devs and support

Where do you hear 1.9? It looks like its only a 800 mhz processor in the phone.

There were a couple of comments in the comment section that referenced that same processor was o/c'd to 1.9 on the G2. I do believe
http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/21/htc-evo-shift-4g-spotted-in-the-wild-said-to-have-800mhz-cpu/
yeah. the processor in the shift is the same as in the g2. the devs on the g2 have been able to overclock it to 1.9 stable.
check this out: http://smartphonebenchmarks.com/
g2 own all other phones right now with the processor
WoW! I want one lol
Got a upgrade March 1st, if this pics up devs than I may get it rather than evo or epic
I really don't imagine there wouldn't be a good dev scene for it, after all, it IS a HTC device, plus it is a CDMA G2. Going to be picking up one whenever Sprint tells me I can, ha.
I could be be wrong but i believe nfinite said he was considering the Shift

Personally, I believe that getting the evo would be better in the long run. The Evo is a premier phone, the original 4g, where as the Shift is just a crappy replication of the evo. If you REALLY want a physical keyboard go for it. Otherwise Evo all the way.

Well, personal preference. It's a decent size I suppose, I'm just used to the size of my brother's Evo. But the extra screen bezel really bugs me. That's my main drawback.

Incredible S!!!

http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/15/htc-refreshes-android-lineup-with-incredible-s-desire-s-and-wil/
I just wish the resolution was a bit higher, but i'm not going to complain. Really weird that it will be shipping with Android 2.2 (in Q2 of this year???) Also no mention of it being a 4G phone. And the biggest bummer, it doesn't say anything about it coming stateside
How about you guys, thoughts on the Incredible S?
Ah, you got to it before me. Anyway, the rotating capacitive buttons mean a rotating Rosie, so maybe we can finally see a Sense 2.5 build for the Incredible that's almost native, right? That being said, the picture clearly shows that there isn't an optical trackpad anymore, but I don't think anyone will really miss it.
To be honest its sad to see HTC's lineup. I honestly don't care about dual core, but I don't think they made any of their new phones dual core. Most of them were just barely updated from what they were the previous year. I really like HTC phones, but I think they need to step up their game to keep up with Moto, LG, Samsung, and any others. Their tablet doesn't even have honeycomb.

The recent announcements are hardly their full line up, but exactly what you said, updates of last year, as well as a few low to mid end "gimmick" devices (Facebook button, anyone?). Those are all intended to be global phones. Don't worry, I think we can still expect flagship phones like the Thunderbolt, Inspire 4G, and the much more recently rumored Revolver.(The latter two may be AT&T, don't remember). At least, I hope we can.
We can't expect any of these phones state side anytime soon. It's usually 6-12months before we see any phones that are "NEW".
That has slowly been changing though with carriers state side getting their own designed phones to compete with each other. I'm curious to see if T-mobile will get anything SUPER AWESOME like Sprint and Verizon have been getting. T-Mobiles line of MyTouch phones don't appeal to me design wise and Sense is the only way to go.
The Incredible S specs have Europe/Asia - HSPA: 900/AWS/2100 MHz and that should mean the with AWS it will work with Tmobiles 3G stateside. Looks like I'll be buying unlocked again if that's true. The Incredible S and the Flyer are the only 2 devices that list AWS in the Bands. So I hope it's true.

I say that because that is usually the case. The US always gets phones later then the rest of the world. This is changing somewhat. It used to be a year+ before we saw phones. Our phone tech was always behind that of the world and still is. Look at the HD2. It came out in August/Sept of 09 around the world and when a US carrier got it it was like March/April of 2010. At least the gap is closing and the US now has some phones that the world doesn't but we still miss out on most products and still have to wait for others to reach our shores. Unless you but unlocked of course.
Some are saying that the specs are disapointing for the Incredible S how ever once you use it and compare against the Desire you should be impressed, I am and have both; the Inc S is far superior to the Desire IMHO.
Hi Guys,
I have a question about incredible s internal space. before i had desire hd and its shows 1.07 GB without installing any apps. and it was 1.5GB. now i bought incredible s it also shows 1.06GB internal space without installing any personal apps. and its is 1.1GB by htc. so what is the difference whether its stock rom is small one or it has same 1.5 GB like desire hd.

UPGRADE this month - what should I do??!!

Hey guys
I am due for my upgrade this month on Sprint and have no clue what to do. I've tried the EVO 3D and was really pleased with the speed and overall features. I've tried the Photon 4G too, and despite the great things I heard about it, I found the UI somewhat laggy and distasteful, and the screen somewhat pixelated. However, with the HTC+Beats Audio partnership announced today, it seems there will be a whole new line of HTC phones coming out this fall/october (likely same $200 price but possibility of faster 1.5 ghz dual-core processor, 8 MP cam, and even new Sense 3.5 -- specs rumored for HTC Vigor for VZW). I really like the idea of even better hardware as well as sound quality, but want the Evo and the cool 3D features too. It also seems worthwhile to wait b/c of the imminent Ice Cream Sandwich update and the new devices to come with that (ex. Nexus Prime or whatever it's called). What do you think I should do, and what are you ppl who also have upcoming upgrades thinking of doing???
I would like to hear your opinions
Thanks,

The 3vo will get upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich sooner than most phones so it's definitely a solid choice, but then these are the first generation of dual-core like you said. Once the better dual-core processors hit the market you'll be thanking yourself for waiting. As well, all this open sense stuff should be taking more effect in a few months and a lot of developers are gonna be all over the newer sense phones.

Wait. Theyre killing off a lot of phones in the next 3 months to release a new line.
Sent from Enrique Iglesias.
I'm waiting to see what develops. My guess is that the new Samsung (Within) will be the next big developer phone, but Nexus Prime is definitely on my radar. Most likely will not be released until the holidays ... but who knows for sure. I am not impressed with the Photon. For the moment, my original Supersonic is still working great.
I agree with what everyone else is saying too. I'd wait it out, see what news Sprint gives out on what other devices they have.. Or at the very least wait for the sgs2 to get released, better yet the nexus 3 / prime
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Either way you look at it, you're still going to get a device that'll be outdated the day it hits the shelves. I got my EVO 3D on pre-order and got it opening day, I've had it for over a month now, and newer things are coming out. It all just depends on how long you want to wait, not what phones to wait for.
Wait a few months if you can. Newest phones are right on the horizon so if you don't need a new beeter phone right now be patient and wait.
You'll be glad you did.
Even better, save some money while your waiting that way you don't have to use your upgrade that way when another new phone comes out 3 months after you bought the first you can use your upgrade on that.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Thanks everyone for your insightful responses. I've been thinking about it, and I think the best thing to probably do is just hold out another month or so and wait to see what gets announced (my birthday is at the end of Sept. anyways). I should be able to keep my current phone for a while with the fairly speedy roms out right now on the HeroC. If I don't see anything new that interests me, which I don't think will be the case, I will always have the 3D as a backup option.
stay classy, XDA
Wait for the galaxy s 2.
I'm trying to figure out what I should do as well, my upgrade is on September 1st.
Most likely I'm just going to get the Samsung Galaxy S 2, and upgrade it to Ice Cream with the help of the geniuses on this website.
I highly doubt the Prime will make it to Sprint very quickly, the Nexus S took 4-5 months did it not? I thought it came out officially around November then Sprint carried it in March or April, if I'm not mistaken. I suppose if you want to buy unlocked then wait for the Prime but I don't think Sprint will get it so quickly unfortunately.
If they were smart they'd try to, the iPhone is coming in October, so Google really should push the phone out to the carriers ASAP. If they would announce something next month officially I would wait a month or maybe even two, but without an announcement, I'll probably get the Galaxy, it's one helluva phone.
If you look at the two the differences will be very small..yes the Nexus will have a nicer screen certainly, but does that make the Galaxy's screen any less nice? probably the second nicest looking screen out there. Then the Nexus will have a slightly faster processor, but who knows maybe the Nexus won't have removable storage like the last one, if that's the case I would buy the galaxy immediately, I don't like being restricted in storage space (unless the standard amount is 32gb..then I probably wouldn't really care)

They should be rolling out LTE in a few markets by then. I wonder how long they will keep Wimax alive after that

Crappy? Lol, I've had nothing but good luck on my Hero with Sprint... Are you in a bad coverage area?
And a Sammy can't compair to an HTC If your buying the Samsung for its specs you'll be disappointed. HTC phones are the best around.

I share the anxiety about the upgrade! I was eligible last month and haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet.
It's like I have some neurotic attachment to the thing. The trackball, the perfect size, knowing how crappy it was when it came out and how awesome it is now with 2.3... it'll be hard to say goodbye!
I'm thinking the sg2; every phone I've owned besides the hero has been samsung and I have liked them all... but by the time it comes out it'll be easy to talk myself out of it and wait for the nexus prime.
Anybody that was used to the Hero's size and stepped up to a EVO-sized phone, was it hard to adjust to it? My gf has the EVO and I wouldn't want to walk around all day with a phone that big in my pocket.
I too, just upgraded to the EVO 3D after having my great Hero for 2 years. I was deciding between the 3D, the Photon 4G and the SGS2. I read a lot of official and unofficial reviews of all the phones as well as many opinions on this site. I have found that while the SGS2 is more powerful on paper, it doesn't bring too much else to the game other than an updated skin and 1080p recording.
Performance-wise, all of these dual core phones should offer a very significant upgrade compared to the Hero we all know and love. After using the Hero for 2 years and having the 3D as my first "modern" Android device, I can say that I wouldn't tell the difference between the 3D or the photon unless I compared them side by side. Any speed is a blessing compared to the Hero, even when it was overclocked and optimized.
Overall, the decision this time comes down to brand loyalty. I chose to stick with HTC because they have been reliable to me for the past two years, and quite frankly, I like Sense better than Motoblur or TouchWiz. All three phones are much more powerful than the Hero, and now is a great time to upgrade.
Hope that helped.

Would you trade your ns4g for an e3d?

So I have the choice of trading my n's and 30$ for an evo 3d and and I wanted some input from you guys. I love my nexus. Coupled with cyanogenmod this is the best android experience I've had thus far. My only gripes with it are the glossy fingerprint magnet battery cover, the crappy speaker, and ok camera. But everything else is magnificent. On the other side, the evo has a dual core CPU, qhd display(albeit its super LCD and with htcs crappy build quality I'm sure there will be backlight bleed), and a 4.3 inch display. The real reason I would do this is because if there's one thing HTC is good at, its wireless radios. I can't obtain a landline web connection so tethering is all I got. My download speeds are fine but my ping fluctautes too much. Makes playing battlefield 3 on my PC a chore 70% of the time . Anywho, convince me to keep my nexus, because for some reason I have this feeling that I'm going to regret doing this lol. But as of right now I think I'm gonna go for it.

i would wait to find someone willing to trade you their epic touch. that's the only phone i'd even consider giving this baby away for.
check craigslist periodically, you'll see something come up.
Yes. Dual core.

I actually just traded my e3d for a nexus s. Not enough development for the e3d, drove me insane.
Wouldn't take the evo either. Google phones have very active developers as well as Google support which translates into faster updates and a longer lifespan with updates.
The dev community is what makes or brakes android phones IMHO, and nexus phones have always gotten one of the best.
Having actually gone from the EVO4G ->EVO3d (sprint bought back phone after 1yr, just payed $40 difference) and currently owning a NS4G afterwards, I would stay with the NS4G.
Although in theory the Dual core and Bigger screen may be viewed as an upgrade, with the correct development/kernel on the NS4G, I have had more impressive experience.
Considering you getting a EVO3d now, it probably has hboot 1.50+ on it which will cause you to run into a myriad of problems when trying to root/flashrom/kernel.
In comparison to the NS4G that is, the newer HTC's are locked and require you to use their own htc utility + other apk's to flash inside the system your rom/kernel (given that you have the lastest hboot like I did)
After have owning the Evo3d for a few months and trading my mother for her "older" NS4G, I would never go back. The development on this phone is impressive; hard to find another thread with updates so frequent.
That being said go with what you enjoy in your hand/feel/look/whatyouwannadowithit haha.
Sorry for the Rant.
Ps after ICS on my NS4G i would never go back to my evo. Not until they figure out some better rooting/flashing methods for their newer devices.
Btw the 3d camera is pretty gimmicky. IMHO. Unless you hold it with alot of precision, 3d never looks just right.
I decided against it lol thanks peeps. You've helped me in not making a horrible decision

I also dumped my e3d for a nexus. The lack of AOSP development is the reason why.
Nope not really a fan of the Evo 3D and personally what I want of NS4G is emulators and those all work 100% fine.

I did the exact same thing. a step back in power but the community for the ns4g is awesome!
no. But I'm not a fan of htc
Honestly, I think you should keep your Nexus. ICS and pure Google beat out Sense, and gimmicky 3D all day. In my opinion, of course.
And if you hate the battery door, try sanding the back! I did it to mine, and it looks great!

Ex-EVO LTE Owners...

I'm basically a phone addict. I've had the PPC-6700, Mogul, Vogue, TP, TP2, EVO, and now EVO LTE. The EVO was the only phone that I've kept for the life of my two year contract. I'm one year into my EVO LTE and there's nothing really wrong with it other than the fact that I'm bored.
Was the upgrade worth it to you guys or now that the novelty has worn off? Let me know!
Worth it, totally. The qualcomm s600 has some balls and sense 5 is the fastest version ever
Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk 2
Honesty, if I didn't have an upgrade, I could have waited. I was on the evo 4g lte as well. I have 4 phone lines on my plan, so I get to upgrade every year. I was running meanbean from the start then went to sense 5. I'm sure it's even better now.
I think the biggest difference is the sound from the front facing speakers.
It is much faster, but I'm not a gamer, do that's pretty much a wash.
It is beautiful and build quality is awesome. I use cases on my phones, so that's a wash as well.
The camera is way better on the ONE as well.
If you're really deadset on upgrading, I'm sure the evo is still worth something. I got $100 for the old og evo.
Just my $.02 of course.

completely worth it for me, i got so sick of the lte reception issues with the lte. battery life is amazing and the speakers are great for watching movies or streaming music at work.
Well, I had the Evo LTe and my wife still has it.
Honestly, I don't see the rush to update. I called Sprint they gave me a deal buy back my contract on the EVolte and cost me $380.00 for the early upgrade. Trust me... The EVo Lte is up too par with the Htc One. Except the live feeds, some camera features and display. But overall camera, performance and speed the EvoLte is equally matched.
From My htc ONE.

I have to disagree. With 2 gb of ram, multitasking finally works right. Also, when sending mms, its far faster on the One to attach pics to the mms, including more than one pic. If its an AOSP rom on the LTE, then yeah its kinda close.
I have had the HTC Touch Pro, The HTC Touch Pro 2, EVO, Evo3D, EVO LTE, HTC One. The evo was ahead of it's time, but the 3D was actually one of my favorite upgrades. It was fast, going to the evoLTE from the 3D wasn't that impressive in my opinion. I always had issues with wi-fi on the evoLTE. It was a good phone but not something I was blown away on. The HTC ONE is amazing. The speakers alone are worth the upgrade. The way it's built is HTC's best built phone ever. It's super fast, battery rocks, wi-fi actually works correctly (at least for me). It's a very worthy upgrade, I couldn't wait to get rid of my evo LTE again mainly cause I had wi-fi issues. Could have been just my hardware. The one had worked perfect for me so far except my simulated battery pull doesn't seem to work correctly. Other than that, it's the most impressive upgrade I have had since I have been using smart phones. All the evo devices I have had on release day so I have had plenty of time using each one.
Paid for my one outright. Bit my wallet pretty bad, but it's worth every cent. The screen, the speakers, the cpu, the build, everything kicks the crap out of the lte. The ONLY thing that bothers me is...no miss my kickstand. I go to put my phone down and ..I...I don't know what to do with myself. Although the thing that has kept me the most happy so far is working radios. Consistent 3g, and I can actually hold an lte signal now!

Thanks everyone. I have 5 lines on my account so I have an upgrade to use. I was worried about the One being able to hold an LTE connection because of some of the threads I've read. This is the only thing that bothers me about the ELTE.

I don't regret upgrading in the slightest. My evo battery life was so god aweful and random freezes, I had so many problems with it. The HTC One is like a godsend to me. I love being able to listen to pandora at work and at the end of the day still have 30 percent battery life left.

Im an ex evo user. I got1and a half times the battery life with it. No comparison whatsoever. If course I used custom kernel but I am with this phone also. But with the evo I could have5 hours screen on and still get a total of 20 hours use. Just my 2 cents. My son had the evo as I gave it to him and he laughs when I have to charge this phone. We don't have lte where we live so thats not an issue. And for this camera being better I'm not sure that's the case either. We have done comparison shots and in my opinion the right megapixel it's definitely better in certain situations by far. Just my input. Thanks.

I don't regret this phone even for one second, much more solid and better connections, speakers are also great!! I do miss the kickstand however and regarding photos I've taken some very nice outdoor pictures and the low light aka indoor photos blow the evo lte away for sure, I took pics side by side in a dimly lit room evo u could barely see a chair of sorts the one u could see the chair the detail on the cushin and the dresser on the other side and also the wall 5 ft behind it instead of just darkness..I'll try to grab some side by sides and show u what I mean

I was just a original Evo user - now I have the One - what a great phone. HTC understands what were about.
Get the One. I still have my Evo LTE and I do comparison and the One just outshines it. Better display. True multitasking, doesn't reload every app after leaving it. Better sound quality with and without headphones, you definitely can tell a difference. No lag issues at all. For instance. Download a torrent file on your Evo LTE, that phone will lag like hell. Do the same with the One, it will perform with no lag. If you're a gamer go with the One. Just get it. Best phone I've had.
My phone history is Motorola Q, HTC Mogul, Sidekick LX, IPhone, Touch Pro, Touch Pro 2, Evo 4G, Evo LTE, now the One.

Have had each "EVO" (4G, 3D, 4g-LTE) since I came back to Sprint a while ago...
In Chicago, we've had LTE since last Fall. I do notice a difference in Speed (3-5Mbps faster in some areas) vs. my "4gLT-EVO." That alone was worth it to me!
:good:

Forgot that. 4G fights to light up on your phone. The LTE would stay on 3g until I cut my mobile network off and back on.

Yep, Got rid of my LTE for the One, the only thing that's taking me a while to get used to are my capacitive buttons. I just found out that double tapping the home button brings up the recent apps lol. I miss the camera buttons as well.
But once you get used to that, everything else is great. I love it, love Zoe, love the sound, screen size, and the hassle-free 4G. I've had it for almost 2 weeks now and I'm yet to root it, longest I've gone, so, no complaints here.
While I was driving to the sprint store to get my One I kept saying why am I getting this new phone? After I got it there's no question that it was the right decision lol both moms have evo ltes now and I could never go back
