Epic GPS - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Was wondering if it was possible to take the epic's gps files in the new leak and throw it on our captivates for a possible attempt at a fix? just a thought.

The Assonance rom in the development section actually uses both the JM9 fix as well as the Epic fix and it honestly has my GPS working as well as it ever has...I am not sure what all files are used but apparently some parts of it can be used to help the Captivates GPS woes.

Im currently running assonance with xcals new kernel and it is insanely fast. However my gps has not been as good as most say. That's why I brought this up. The epic peeps seem to be enjoying the leak but from what I understand it was pulled? Just a more updated epic fix. But the rom itself is great.

I'm running the assonance 3.1 rom and have yet to get a lock on google maps. I was able to get locks in and out when i was using the Geomod rom but i like the assonance rom more. Also on the assonance Rom i can't even get an estimation with the cell towers. I am pretty frustrated with trying to get my GPS to work.
What is left to try?

Currently running firmware?

I'm wondering what firmware everyone is running right now, as I'm looking to find one as a basis to rollback to as a full nandroid backup. Constantly redoing my UI is annoying me now, so I'm looking to find a baseline with which to experiment.
Currently, I'm running VibrantHybrid r2, and I'm looking for something more stable to run. Basically, I'm looking for a ROM where everything works.

Out of curiosity what's not stable about the hybrid rom other than gps? Just wondering because I've been running it for a week without a single hiccup.

[Q] so who all stayed with Froyo and who did what?

so with the leaked release of froyo coming out last night. I had a hell of a time getting froyo on my phone. So just out of curiousity who stayed with froyo, downgraded back to cog or waiting for a cogged release of froyo?
waiting for cog 2.2 to check out froyo, thats how much I like having it
I wasn't running cognition to begin with, but I am sticking with froyo.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I just flashed froyo a little while ago and all seems well. I'm definitely going to keep it. I had froyo on my g1, and didnt realize how much i missed i was stuck on 2.1 with a new captivate. But the lock screen is killing me, you have to pull the screen wayyy to far!
Flashed it as soon as the multi upload link was posted. Do far no deal breakers for me. Got it rooted, side loading enabled and everything setup to be my daily driver.
I wish they'd just release the damn kernel so the people smarter than me can really get cooking on some ROMs.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I flashed to 2.2, and it is working amazing. I would never think about going back to 2.1, even though I am not smart enough to root it without the other people making it easy, which they have not done yet lol
With the leaked JI6 Froyo being so stable, I plan on sticking with it until an official release is made.
Does anyone know how to get apps that aren't showing up in the market to show up?
I flashed to froyo today and I like it. I think I'm staying with it. It has too many improvements to give up. It may start getting ported to us by at&t real soon anyway.

I flashed this afternoon.. after having some difficulty (mostly my stupidity for not disabling voodoo lagfix from Cognition) am running Froyo. I've noticed a little lag here and there but used Ryan's one click and it helped somewhat. Sofar it's amazing, havent tested GPS though. I've gotten Chrome to Phone and it works great as well as being able to play Flash. So far nothing to complain about.
I posted over in the COG thread, but I tried Froyo for a day and then flashed back to stock and then back to COG 2.1.6 w/Atinm's Voodoo kernel. I loved the GPS performance in 2.2 (after I switched to supl.google.com), but everything else is so much more polished in the current COG (as expected). I'm looking forward to the progress that is inevitably coming with Froyo though and more than likely will flash to it again soon.
Sticking with it although I cannot keep all the contracts out of the list SIM, Google and Phone contacts all load......I decided to delete SIM and Phone and keep Google contacts.
Its a keeper though. No need to root the phones yet I have everything I need.
Leaky Froyo beats crappy Eclair any day. It will be fun to see how AT&T cripples the new rom.
I went with Froyo and have not found any show stoppers at this point, so it looks like I will be staying with it.
I went with 2.2 and have stuck with it. I'm not having any issues other than the contacts list thing and its not that big of a deal to me. Ill go with COG 2.2 when he gets all the bugs worked out with a clockwork or odin install.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Never tried cognition Roms, but the leaked build seems to be 100% fully functional. Haven't had any issues, I'll be staying with it until the official release and rooting etc gets as easy at eclair build.

[REQUEST] Darky's v6.0 Gingerbread Edition

I hope so

DO NOT FLASH THAT TO YOUR VIBRANT!!!
I just helped a guy Odin back to stock cuz he flashed that to his Vibrant...wait until Vibrant Devs port it to the Vibrant
Porting I9000 roms onto the Vibrant isnt as easy and clear cut as it seems. Thats why Eugenes first 2.2 port was full of bugs
waiting..... i am very excited for this rom
The captivate has this rom too

Its really pointless porting a 2.2.1 rom at this point. First, its honestly not much faster. Second, we're really close to have an official 2.2, maybe even gingerbread. We'll more than likely have gingerbread before anyone actually ports a fully working, bug free 2.2.1 rom based off i9000 code. You might get a VERY minor speed increase, but of course with the trade off of having tons of bugs. Not worth it in my opinion. Speed AND stability is the way to go. Not speed and bugs.

Exactly, and the only reason I brought Ragnarok to the point I did was because I had already started it. I did, however, learn a lot in the process. And I finally figured out how to fix the dang gps - even so, it is nowhere near a daily driver - more a curiosity.
This is true, if we have a ported 2.3 there is no point of having a 2.2.1
But I had in my i9000 a 2.2 ROM version and when switched to the one of Darky (2.2.1) I could see a real change in speed. (I had before Voodoo). Anyone could notice the snappiness of the phone!
It is pity, the devices have so small differences in hardware and it is so difficult to port ROMs. If you notice the Galaxy S forum is full of custom ROMs and mods, plenty of them. Aditionally long time ago there was unofficial and then official FroYo...
Waiting....The only reason I got the Vibrant is the AWS ... (and it still needs a mod for the FFC)

Yeah, I had the same curiosity 2 weeks ago. I had 2.2.1 running on my phone. For the most part it ran fine, but would randomly get tossed into a bootloop. And when I say randomly, it was extremely random. There would be times my phone would run for hours, other times it would bootloop an hour after boot, 20 minutes after boot, or immediately after boot. lol.

If you read the ragnarok thread there is a possibility that the boot loops are triggered by signal strength. Still, it would require capping the strength to stop it.
Ok so I am understanding (sorry still learning the lingo here and there), The I9000 2.2.1 is not that great but the 2.3 Gingerbread from the NS is possible to be ported to the Vibrant right?
If so then sombionix, may I suggest you dont bother your precious time with all these leaked releases (JL_x's) and only work on the 2.3 NS port. I have used a few of your roms and they are sweet, I can only imagine what it will be like with all the JIT patches in 2.3!

[Q] Which ROM/modem? AT&T, GPS, HSUPA

I haven't flashed a new ROM in awhile and really don't want to have to go through every ROM/modem combination to find one that works for my needs. I know plenty of folks here go through almost every ROM that is available so I'm hoping to pick your brains.
1) I'm NOT asking "what is the best ROM". I <3 -all- of the ROM authors and don't wish to start that kind of mess.
2) I'm willing to try a couple of combinations to see.
3) My Cappy is brand new (I just exchanged my old one under warranty since I was one of those in the original batch that got the lovely random shutdown issue even with 2.1-update1) ... not sure if that is going to matter or not but I've read a lot of posts that seem to make it clear that different Cappy batches behave better with different ROMs.
So ... what I'm primarily looking for:
* I'm on AT&T so I need 850
* I would REALLY like to get improved GPS performance ... I don't want to buy a standalone GPS (wife has one, I'll use it when I have to) ... right now even with the GPS tweaks like Skyhook I'm just not getting acceptable lock times and it loves to break lock.
* HSUPA ... I'd like to enable HSUPA. I'm fortunate enough to live in an area with a new 3G tower and small population, which means I know there is more bandwidth available so I might as well use it. Especially since on occasion I need to tether.
* I don't want to lose noise cancellation
* I would like a ROM with good battery performance
Otherwise I'm not concerned with new features ... besides the issues above I do fine with the 2.1 ROM (not saying I don't want 2.2, just saying I don't care whether the custom ROM includes custom launchers, themes, etc). I would -like- working Bluetooth + HSUPA but my version of "working Bluetooth" doesn't care about voice dialing.
PS. I've read a number of threads on ROMs and modems ... but my brain hit information overload once I started trying to match up both. I probably could have settled on a single ROM -or- modem, but trying to get them to mesh well just didn't compute.
Everyone has different experiences with different roms. I know it's a cliche but it's true. I've had pretty much no gps in a rom that boasts about gps. Best to try each rom and see if you like any.

Personally I love my combo of darky's 9.1 with suckerpunch oc/uv kernel and the tjl3 modem. I really haven't used the gps much and so I can't say about that (make sure to use faster fix to get the right region). The battery life is all day for me and I use stereo bluetooth headphones all day. I really like the look too. I don't know if it has noise canceling though. Hopefully this is helpful.
HSUPA requires an I9000 based ROM with a matching modem.
I'm using Serendipity 5.0 with a JK4 modem.

The only way to have noise cancellation is to stay with 2.1. From what I understand, att is the only one to have included the noise cancellation chip and since we do not yet have an official Att 2.2 source we can not take advantage of the chip.
Not sure on this one, but doesn't i9000 based roms have the bt static issue? And is the i9000 roms the only ones that let you have hsupa? Sorry a lot of information is on this site and I am trying to learn as much as I can.

Started with the included modem (??), flashed jk4 with CWM (didn't help), moved to Telus JL3. I like JL3 better right now.
Just know that you have to pay attention to what ROM you're using. If you're running a I9000 rom, you have to use a I9000 modem.

Also using Darkys 9.1 and find the battery life is great. The only I see is wifi stops connecting after 1 day or so, but a reboot brings it back up.
What improvements did you see with the suckerpunch kernel?

[Q] True GPS Fix.

Was there ever a true GPS fix for the Captivate?
Thinking about picking another one up, so many great ROMs out there its hard to pass up.
GPS is a deal breaker, I've had one before and it was just plain terrible.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
No. Every phone reacts different to all the tweaks. If you truly want gps on your phone, try anything but the captivate. Some people are reporting the newer ones seem to have working gps out of the box. YMMV
Caution swyping! Read at your own risk.
I just bought a new one last week and it worked fine. If I'm outdoors, it picks up enough satellites for a lock within seconds. Within a minute, there's about 11
The newer ones don't seem to have problems that'd the only guarantee
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
On Continuum v4, I had great gps, after making a few "adjustments"in lbstest. On v5.5, its not as great, but it works.
There is no "true gps fix" as my captivate never had a working gps.
But I heard that the new ones work fine.

Yeah def try a Gingerbread rom. My GPS sucked until I went to GB, it's absolutely flawless now. May have also helped the fact that I got a warranty replacement to go with that
GB roms definitely make the bad GPS in captivate almost livable....nothing can fix poor signal however. Gingerbread and angry gps is way more aggressive in doing what it does to make the gps lock in. I'm going on my third captivate and will keep exchanging until I get one that has the fixed hardware.
