Was there ever a true GPS fix for the Captivate?
Thinking about picking another one up, so many great ROMs out there its hard to pass up.
GPS is a deal breaker, I've had one before and it was just plain terrible.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
No. Every phone reacts different to all the tweaks. If you truly want gps on your phone, try anything but the captivate. Some people are reporting the newer ones seem to have working gps out of the box. YMMV
Caution swyping! Read at your own risk.
I just bought a new one last week and it worked fine. If I'm outdoors, it picks up enough satellites for a lock within seconds. Within a minute, there's about 11
The newer ones don't seem to have problems that'd the only guarantee

On Continuum v4, I had great gps, after making a few "adjustments"in lbstest. On v5.5, its not as great, but it works.
There is no "true gps fix" as my captivate never had a working gps.
But I heard that the new ones work fine.

Mine never worked. Loaded gr-12 and now it does

Yeah def try a Gingerbread rom. My GPS sucked until I went to GB, it's absolutely flawless now. May have also helped the fact that I got a warranty replacement to go with that
GB roms definitely make the bad GPS in captivate almost livable....nothing can fix poor signal however. Gingerbread and angry gps is way more aggressive in doing what it does to make the gps lock in. I'm going on my third captivate and will keep exchanging until I get one that has the fixed hardware.

Was wondering if it was possible to take the epic's gps files in the new leak and throw it on our captivates for a possible attempt at a fix? just a thought.
Retracted

The Assonance rom in the development section actually uses both the JM9 fix as well as the Epic fix and it honestly has my GPS working as well as it ever has...I am not sure what all files are used but apparently some parts of it can be used to help the Captivates GPS woes.
Im currently running assonance with xcals new kernel and it is insanely fast. However my gps has not been as good as most say. That's why I brought this up. The epic peeps seem to be enjoying the leak but from what I understand it was pulled? Just a more updated epic fix. But the rom itself is great.
I'm running the assonance 3.1 rom and have yet to get a lock on google maps. I was able to get locks in and out when i was using the Geomod rom but i like the assonance rom more. Also on the assonance Rom i can't even get an estimation with the cell towers. I am pretty frustrated with trying to get my GPS to work.
What is left to try?
Hi,
I own my galaxy for like 3 weeks now.
The first 2 weeks I was running stock 2.2.1, and had sudden reboots (it even entered into safe mod once I was sleeping and woke up from the sound the phone was doing), force closes.
So I decided and installed deodexed stock rom with speedmod kernel (+lagfix and recommended tweaks), and I feel that my phone is still bad. Angry birds keeps freezing the phone, wifi errors, and I can't run my phone more than 50hrs of uptime, it either will randomly reboot or as it happens today simply turns it self off and wont let me to turn in on (or getting into recovery/download mode).
When this phone was out everybody said its awesome (fast, stable etc) and I waited for prices to get down, now when I finally got it I think that I made a mistake.
Is anybody else frustrated with their phone? Am I doing something wrong? Maybe I should I hope that samsungs gingerbread will fix this? Or
maybe I should try custom rom like Darky or CM7?
Maybe all smartphones sucks and I dont know it because I never had a smartphone before?
Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot!
is it a new or used one mate ??????
i had it for 1 year now its the best
Its a new one of course.
Are you running any custom rom/kernel?
the beauty of SGS and Android is the continuous evolution of the ROMs you install...
I tried many different ROMs , and I am sure you would finally find something that will make you happy with the machine...
for a start, if you are on 2.2.1, get Darky 9.5 and you wont be disappointed.
Your phone is faulty. I had the device on stock froyo for 4 months after buying it and I never had random reboots or wifi issues.
Definitely take it back. I've modded mine so many times and still looks new to me. Had mine since January of this year.

@kauh1970 Thanks for the support!
@Furry Atom, very supportive, however I do start to think that something might be wrong with my phone. On other hand, that might be some application that causes the problems.
@alluliwi, Sorry my English is not that good, what do you mean by "take it back"?
Thanks!

By take it back, he meant to send the phone back for repairs or replacement under warranty to Samsung.
I have no problem with my phone, the only thing i dont like is the free ram available... seem low to me
@timelessfahad Thanks for clearing that up.
@vanvn297 You are running a stock 2.2.1 ROM?
Hi,
I recently updated via kies from stock 2.1 to stock 2.2 HVJP4.
So far I'm not impressed with the stock froyo rom. It's often sluggish and apps, especially email from exchange, crash reguarly.
I have not experienced any problems with wifi or 3g reception however.
I'm still trawling the forum, trying to find all the info and confidence to backup the current rom and try something different, but there's a good chance a stock gingerbread rom will appear before that happens. Hopefully it will address some of these problems. Fingers crossed

Gingerbread works fine
The issue with wifi is pretty known from what I looked (strange thing it never happened on the stock samsung rom only started to happen on deodexed stock with speedmod kernel).
The other thing my original rom was XXJPY and I flashed a deodexed XXJPY so maybe the rom it self is not that good. Gonna try XXJVH/XXJVB deodexed with Demian kernel probably, or will try Darky ROM (also considering CM7).
More replies about your satisfaction with galaxy s will be happily accepted!

in my opinion cm7 has gotten to the point that there is no reason not to install it... its litterally just a single zip now after you have rooted and put cwm on you're phone. the battery is fine, the photo/video is fine (although the samsung camera is way better... panoramic pics ftw) wifi/data is fine/ no need for lagfix/ and its constantly being updated..
edit: actually I think the battery might be better than what I was getting on darky 9.5...
i have been frustrated about my sgs for the first month until i discovered the rom world
usally the stock rom comes bloated with **** and uneeded stuff wich makes the phone slower and many other useless things...(i think)
i am still kind of new to all this and there is so much info do some reading and see how your sgs can be a beast
I too am not feeling the awesomeness of the Galaxy S. My friend got his one when it came out and its hard to believe this is the same phone I thought of as awesome all that time.
I got it new last week, and experiencing quirky behavior that really makes me feel like I'm using a low-mid class phone, and made me completely unenthusiastic/ not inclined with moving to the new phone which is how it should be. I even used my old Motorlla V8 for days after I got the SGS cos I was so unimpressed.
Poor camera, reception, crashes, dropouts, low wi fi signal, stutters, not responding to taps etc, really clunky loose volume button that makes it feel cheap, cheap sounding speaker. And I haven't installed anything on it except quadrant standard, and that crashes sometimes too.
To elborate a little. As far as comparable qualities go, compared to my Motorolla V8, The reception and voice quality is poor. Same network same simcard, I get half the signal, during a call it will sometimes dropout or make that guitar like noise, whereas my V8 never did any of that.
Even when I am next to a wi fi router. It doesn't show full wi-fi signal. Not even at my friends house. It reaches nowhere near as much as any laptop I have had.
I gotta compare these attributes to my friends sgs.
What I have compared so far is the camera, which is much worse on mine, You can see the thread here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081453
The AMOLED screen is also a lot dimmer, and cant display white as pure white but a grey/blue tint. Same settings max brightness.
For example quadrant standard, the spinning DNA like helix test. His background is pure snow white, mine is an off blue/grey dim white.
We also compared speakers, same song. His one has stronger clearer sounds, its quite noticable. All in all I'm wondering If I should replace my phone within the 14 day period.
I already took it back one about the camera issue to where I got it and the guy said its fine, so I would really have to go to Vodaphone or samsung directly to get a new one, which I did, and they said go to a repair centre. Even if they even have stock, it could be the same problems. And I would have to prove all these grey area problems.
Anyway check out my other thread as well and apply the Spectrum or Waveform Wallpaper. I wonder if its glitching here, but I think its most likely normal.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1086257
I will try upload a vid soon.
I am using my sgs now for 2 month, and i have to say its a great phone.
But its only great if you flash it.
In my opinion stock roms by Samsung are not fast enough,
full with useless apps and many tweaks like voodoo sound and gps fixes are missing.
(Tested 2 SGS from different providers, both roms not usable)
Try Darkys rom as also mentioned on page one.
There are many roms, and not all of them are bugfree and stable.
You have to remember the programmers arent payed for their work.
If you still have wifi problems uing darkys rom, your phone is damaged.
You probably need to start afresh.
Reflash a stock rom (ie. JPU which is a fill rom), then update to stock gingerbread. There shouldn't be many bugs at all.

I finally plucked up the courage to do exactly that.
I'm now running JVH with a CF rooted kernel and the phone is now performing close to what I hoped for.
Secondary boot loaders have also been fixed and I'll admit I held my breath during that flash.
Thanks to everyone here for providing the info I needed and making great roms.

Ive had mine since day 1 and its been amazing. No latency issues, wifi/data works perfectly, stable, no fc's(force closes), and the display is perfect. It seems they've gotten fairly "cheap" with the manufacturing of the newer, more recent models being shipped.
Love this phone... BUT, im still going to trade it in for an SGS2
So, clearly im a captivate user For about a couple months now.. But well, ive bricked my phone dozens of times, and i hate the fact that my phone can never get a proper lock on GPS. And i hate that it doesnt have gingerbread. So im considering going to rogers and trying to tell them that the phone keeps breaking, i need a new one, and im tired of sending it into warranty and using a phone without data (while still paying for data)....
Basically im looking into the xperia arc or the nexus S, or keeping the captivate.
What are your thoughts?
I personally like the captivate and Nexus S. If I had to choose it would be tough. The only thing I like about xperia is the new PSP phone. Looks pretty sweet and comes with android 2.3. The nexus s is pretty dope too. Tough choice. Maybe hold out and get an sgs2
Oh yeah! SGS2 FOR SURE! thanks il play the waiting game

There are several Gingerbread custom ROMs you could try - I'm using Continuum, and absolutely loving it.
I have perception 2 and with gb my gps is impeccable.

GPS
I'm using Nostalgia Froyo based ROM, and use Aura for GPS - no problems whatsoever (no data plan needed either). Plus I get Audience noise suppression. Buya to GB owners!
Does anyone have a reliable GPS on one of the newer roms? I've been using Serendipity (the last version), and have still been having problems.
It wouldn't be a big deal, except I would like to using a cycling app on the phone, and that requires a GPS that doesn't take 10 minutes to lock and looses signal every few minutes. Never mind that it can't even pin point me.
Maybe I'm just not up on todays roms, but my question is the GPS working well?
Thanks!
Using search would have supplied you with about 10,000 threads on how unreliable the GPS is even with fixes, newer roms, etc.
It all depends on your hardware and if you got lucky. If it's truly that bad, especially on any rom, then warranty it.
What cappy said. GPS in these devices is terribly unreliable and there seems to be no rock solid way to fix this. Some phones hardware seem to work better then others, if it really bothers you warranty it repeatedly until you can get a decent timed lock. My dad refused the leave the warranty center until he was able to get locks on his device in less then 10 seconds. Obviously took him a while with these crappy GPS's. He ended up with a much newer revision of the phone not sure what build number but his GPS is noticeably better then mine on the same firmware. I have a 1010 by the way and yes the GPS is aweful. I don't really use it too much other then to find general location sso it doesn't kill me but I understand the frustration with something that Samsung could of very well done a better job at.
At any rate this question has been answered all too many times. If it really kills you complain until you are satisfied. I personally don't think you will be regardless. My dad still moans and groans about his GPS even after all his complaining.

How to port GB
Does anyone know the steps to make the O3D leaked GB rom work for the Thrill? If there are any experienced devs out there, that maybe dont have the thrill to work with anymore (bc most switched to the SGS2), could give me a walkthrough or an idea of where to start that would be great! I have a machine running ubuntu, an 06 macbook pro w/ OS X Snow Leopard, and an hp running W7 and the Dev release of W8 (dual boot). I have never cooked any ROM before so i dont know what exactly i would need but i am sure i can find that info somewhere on XDA... but, the more detailed any help or ideas, the better!
Hey I have some experience porting roms and building cm7. When my donated thrill gets here next week I will look into this more.

Excellent! PM me when you start working on it. I will be more than willing to help/test...

It's running...
First backup/write down your apn & mms settings, there are lots of info here on the forums to do this, or an app like this: http://android.riteshsahu.com/apps/apn-backup-restore.
Do a full nandroid backup to your sd card to be safe.
Follow the instructions on this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331814 to get the o3d rom running on the thrill, it's a fairly long process, but not too bad.
Replace your APN and MMS settings, 4g disabled, everything else is mostly working it seems, though my wifi is a bit wonky so far.
OOOOR
Wait for a dev to build a solid custom rom!
Good luck!
Do you guys think this'll resolve wifi reception issues? I've been tolerating this crappy phone for awhile thinking GB will solve the battery issues but in the past few weeks I've been doing some business travel to Boston, Dallas and LA the GPS has been completely inadequate on all three trips. It would take up to 20 minutes to get initial GPS signal and then even when it does have GPS it would go in and out of GPS reception every minute or two. I'm so fed up with this thing. Yes, I read the 'GPS fix' thread and had already implemented the 'fix' but it's not any better.
I bought it at Costco, therefore, I'm thinking Atrix2 since the Galaxy S2 is a huge price diff. If I had the option, I'd trade it in for iPhone4S.
GPS has been working well on quite a few users phones, and I can personally attest to the the same. I also haven't had any battery issues with the phone at all. It might be a software issue or hardware, but you might want to try exchaning it for another to isolate it. For me, it has been a great phone so far, and I expect a great GB rom to only solidify this.
My wifi and gps work fantastic... you might have a dud... if its within your month swap it out... it sounds like 25% of these phones have bad bugs...
Seriously this is one of my favorite phones of all time... wouldnt say that if i had those troubles...

Gingerbread has brought some great changes to the infuse for me. Better battery life and overall performance. I would say that the same would go for the thrill. I will be getting my thrill just in time for my Las Vegas trip so I will put the stock rom with root access to the test!

Back to the topic of getting the leaked gingerbread rom running on the thrill.... has anyone else tried the instructions I posted? Would like to hear others results especially concerning wifi...
I might try it later tonight or tommorow... trying to write a research paper on precambrian evolution at the moment though.
i'll try it out and post my results hopefully by sunday though...
Its not looking good for the leaked gb running on Thrill. The rom itself will run but Apparently LG changed the baseband for gingerbread. You can install the o3d baseband and you will probablly be able to call/text. But you wont be able to use data. I NEED my data connection for sending emails out in the field so that's a big no-go for me.
