I've been using Mobipocket on my Fuze but used to use iSilo on my old Kaiser. I've heard some good things about the others too. What ebook reader do you guys use? What do you recommend?
isilo, foxit pdf and chm reader basically... im a medical student... i read a lot!!
Are there any with finger scrolling?
I haven't found one that is "finger" friendly but another ebook reader that is available is Microsoft Reader. It uses a format known as LIT but most of the books I see that are good quality are based on Sony's format which are the LRF files. Unfortunately, I haven't found one that reads the LRF format and the converters that I found do not support a conversion of it either..
i use mobipoket and foxit reader (although documents to go with PDFtoGO is a good alternative). Haven.t used isilo yet but heard good things about it
I like Adobe Reader LE 2.5. It is surprisingly fast (considering Acrobat's notorious slowness on the desktop) and the reflow option is extremely useful (if only there was a way to save the zoom and the reflow option...).
The only other PDF reader I tried is Foxit, but I just don't like it. It's significantly slow (again, surprising considering Foxit's speed on the desktop) and the massive advertisement on the top is rather annoying.

i can scroll thw three of them similar to opera mobile... i just drag.
I love eReader from the fictionwise folks. I have been using it for years. Check it out at http://www.ereader.com. The reader is free and the books are reasonably priced. You can configure the reader to look the way you want it to look. I like black text on white background but they have a bunch of themes and you can make your own theme. The books are all properly formatted to look good in on your phone.
I'm surprised that ereaders aren't being kept up -- most of them see like they haven't really changed in years, back when I had an Axim. Why aren't developers working on ereaders? not enoguh demand?

That's a good question. I noticed the same thing. It's interesting that the sw for the mobiles is declining, but the hardware solutions are expanding...i.e. kindle, etc.
Mobipocket is still my favorite. I was hoping great things would happen once Amazon bought Mobipocket, but it seems like the Kindle has dashed any hope of that. Looking through the forums at Mobipocket.com it looks as though any future development may be over. At this point I think it would be hard to change readers since I've collected a huge library in Mobipocket. Maybe if Barnes & Noble get around to porting their reader to WM I'll give it a try.
Repligo reader is what I've used on all my phones/pdas/pnas for years. You can download all versions here:
It's free, and the technique the program uses to fit your text/pages to your devices' screen is brilliant. I also use repligo pdf server which batch converts unlimited pdf files to the repligo format.

Yeah, ereader is pretty nice. I've used it and mobipocket, and got away from ereader for a couple of years. I just went back to it, and think I like it better than mobi. The themes are nice, and I like the fact that it has real pagination. Mobipocket is a pain in the butt, because if you skip back a page when you first open it up (or even after just minimizing it), it will hop back like 10 pages. It's really easy to lose your place. You don't get full page with ereader, but I find that isn't a problem for me. I also like the flash reading mode-it's pretty nice if you want to re-read a section that you forgot, or if you're currently reading a section that you want to forget.
Hi I have been trying to decide if I should by this myself by reading reviews and such but, I plan on rooting the device and installing different launchers and apps and I realize this completely changes the nature of the beast. If you could answer a few questions for me it would be greatly appreciated.
1. How fast/laggy is it. If I install launcherpro will it still work well.
2. How difficult is it to get movies encoded for it and how do they look.
3. Has anyone tried installing news apps for android (NY Times, BBC,CNN ext.) Also is netlix possible?

1. I tried Launcher Pro, ADW, and Zeal and there is no lag in any of them. I did settle on Zeal for now.
2. I have about 10 movies that I had encoded originally for my evo and they all play great! Just the simple settings in handbrake will work fine.
3. I have USA Today on there now as well as the engadget program and both work great. Haven't tried netflix, don't have a account.

Thanks m8 thats actually a lot of helps a lot. IDK if netflix will work because of all the copyright and DRM but everything else sounds like good news to me. Now if only some could figure out how to get this thing to accept Adhoc networks from my cell phone that eould be great. If anybody else has something to add fell free to go right on ahead.
I actually tried Zeal and didnt like it. I had to put a bunch of icons down in the doc bar to get the doc launcher (the button with all the dots) in the middle where I like it....unless I missed something and dont know how to do it.
I have a huge library of HD (720p BD rips) and SD (DVD rips) movies and TV shows in AVI and MKV containers, will I be able to stream these video files within my home network? (without transcoding)

OMG don't get the viewsonic G Tab... I had it for 1 day and had to take it back. Absolutely the worst screen I have ever seen on a device. The worst viewing angles. The nook color is wayyyyy better in my honest opinion and is really fast enough.

Ok, cool. Thanks alot. I really wanted a tegra...but the NC is the form factor I wanted, and I read nothing but great things about the screen. Just wanted to hear from other geeks whether or not i'm going to end up making a huge performance sacrifice or not.
I had a gtablet too and it really was the worst, even rooted and running a special tegra kernel. The nook is amazing and nearly the perfect tablet for me.
If you are asking yourself this question and seriously considering getting a nookColor, keep in mind that B&N has a deal that ends Sunday if you buy $100 in gift certificates you will get $10 back in gift cards (that are activated the day after christmas). I took advantage of this and bought $300 and got $30 in gift cards back which I'm going to use toward accessories (easel case I'm [email protected]). You may want to double check with your store but the manager at the store I went to allowed me to do this (after reading through the 'terms and conditions' on the website he said there was nothing that said it couldn't be done)

I want the nookcolor mainly as a tablet: surfing the web, reading reddit, loading .pdf's of books/medical journals/textbooks to read and study from.
I was originally waiting for the archos 101 for $300.....but it seems like it's never going to come out.
The other thing is, since the nookcolor's screen is made for reading, will there be less eye-strain than with other tablets ( ipad,gtablet,archos 101?)

I was wondering this exact same thing, how does this fare as a cheap tablet?
I've done plenty of tweaking and modding with my nexus one so I'm no noob there - is this the deal of the century for someone like me? From what I've seen with a new launcher this thing turns into a serious galaxy tab competitor.
If anyone has any negatives they'd like to list please let me know - I'll probably be buying one of these in a few days.

The archos is only $50 more with HDMI,usb ,and a stand. But isn't available yet.

Hi everyone, I am seriously considering buying a Nook Color as I really like it's design (something important for me), and want a Tablet device. And at 250$ it sounds like a really good deal. (The Archos 101 here in Greece costs 330 euro -> 440$, so the Nook is considerably cheaper)
My main usage will be: Reading pdfs and watching some .ppt files (I am a senior electrical & computer engineer student and want the Nook for studying), some Web Browsing, and if it is able for some MSN messaging..
Also, I wanted to ask you if it is capable of doing something:
Let's say you are reading a .pdf on your Nook. Is it possible to "handwrite" anything on the .pdf, like you are writing on a piece of paper, and save the file? That would be extremely helpful when studying.
Is there any application that does this?

While the NC supplier (B&N and it's mfg'er) have a limited track record, the record of Archos is pretty clear ... roll out products that target the 'latest trend' with software that is usually not ready and move on to the next latest thing within a very short time leaving a trail of unsupported devices. If you can live with buying a new thing from Archos every 9-12 mos and knowing support will be GONE after that then go for it.
As said the Nook may not turn out better, but it can't be worse. It has an up-to-date system now, larger memory, better viewing for it's primary mission. (A70 just getting 2.2 and who know what bugs with it; A101 still not available, what does THAT tell you?)
If you want an android multimedia device then the Archos family may be a way to go, but evaluate it against multimedia devices since that is Archos' focus (assuming they have one), not reading and/or tablet functions.
Probably most people on this thread have reading as a primary, tablet second and entertainment third. The screen is really great, pdf reading is real good other than the swipe down instead of swipe sideways, with the Dolphin browser, root, su, multitouch what's not to like? ... did I mention the screen is great?

Don't know of any android apps that allow document editing, however if I wanted to annotate a pdf doc, I would put it in my Calibre library, convert it to ePub, load it on the NookColor and annotate away ... .. Calibre is a free program and VERY useful for ereading.
As for foreign sales, don't know a thing ...
Did you read the post from gtablet? There is a wifi suplicant file. I don't have a nook yet but will root and post.

I am always into the gadget with the most mods available and possibilities. I'm trying to find an ereader for my girlfriend though. Is this a decent choice? She mainly wants to read magazines and I might want to play Angry Birds now and then.
Seeing its price, screen resolution, and functionality, it's absolutely perfect for her, if those are her main requirements. The magazine reading app that B&N supplies is really top notch.

I don't know enough about tablets and ereaders I guess, but if I were to get a generic android 2.2 tablet it wouldn't have this magazine app? I'm assuming there is no other device in this price range that does magazines well? Can't really afford an ipad right now. Think it will be hard to find a nook color in the Bay Area next week?
I don't know for sure as I don't read magazines digitally, but I read something around here about the Nook for Android apk NOT working for magazines, just books while the NC DOES do magazines.
And from what I have read everywhere, for the money there is no better overall device it seems.
I did give my NC a quick run through after I got it and it seemed overall a pretty well done job by B&N. Of course my time with it unmodded was only a couple of hours...
If the primary use was to be JUST an eBook reader I would probably say something with a B&W eInk screen would be better, but for anything with image content and color- NC would seem the best thing out right now.

What's unique about the B&N is that it integrates the subscription process with the magazine reader. I don't mean they're the same application...they're two...but they work together well. If you tried to use another device, you'd have to figure out:
- how to port the B&N magazine reader app to the new device
- how to download copies of the magazine issues
I'm not saying don't do it, it's just more work. FYI, I just took a quick peek and many mainstream magazines seem to run $2-$4 per month for a 12-month subscription.
The NC is at Walmart too now, by the way.
EDIT: well, turns out the magazines are stored as epubs in the NC's internal memory: /media/B&N Downloads/Magazines. Easy to find, and I was able to make a copy and view it on a PC.

If she likes to read magazines, that's where the NOOKcolor really shines.
I think she will like it. i prefer the NC over the e-inks, with brightness down it is comfortable to read in dark, i read it well in sunlight also. i would have had to spend extra $20 for light for Nook 3G, so, NC and all it's extras for $30 more? win
I'm on the very edge of getting a Gtab for general use. I currently have an Ideapad s10-3t with windows 7 but its just not setup for tablet use. The main reason I got the ideapad was to read comics. It does this very well but with the extra heft of the 8 cell battery it can get heavy after reading for a while. So, has anyone tried comic reader mobi or droid comic viewer on this thing?

I have a couple of comics I wanted to read but it was a pain to do on the iphone or touch so they sat for a few years. So last night I used Android Comic Viewer and it worked great. I noticed that it just loads all the comic files which is nice but it crashes or force closes after a bit. If there was a way to only load one at a time maybe that would solve the problem.

The reader works really well. I'm amazed how the graphics come to life...
Well i'm not Roebeet but I can vouch for ACV or Droid Comic Viewer, works well for me far as most files. I love old school comics like Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" and Howard Chaykin's "The Shadow"(1986 DC Ruled the comic book world). The only issue for me is crappy angled screen viewing, and that is a small issue. I havent tried the others however.
I was using Droid Comic Viewer until I started to get a lot of FCs and memory errors on some CBRs. I'm now using JJ Comic viewer and it's opened everything I've thrown at it including the ones that were FCing on Droid Comic Viewer.
Can you open .cbr or .cbz files in comixology? I downloaded it to my phone but didn't see an option to do that. Also does ACV or the other apps support rotating the comic?(not the app, the actual comic in the app).

I believe the ComiXology viewer only supports comics books downloaded/purchased through their site. I haven't purchased any comic books from their site to date. Many free comics are offered each week.
Mobi comic reader works well. Just tried the android comic viewer and I like it also.

Thanks for the responses. I think I'm going this weekend to my local Sears and picking one up. Now that the source has dropped this will make a nice new toy to keep me occupied for a while.
ACV will crash due to memory issues. If you go into setting and remove the advance load/buffer or whatever it will fix it. It's one of the best free reader IMO.
Comic Reader Mobi is the king, but it's like $15.
I use driod comic viewer for my cbr and cbz files. The low memory setting is under- settings>support> and check off low memory mode.

I agree, I've been using it since I heard about it last week or so and I've found it to be excellent overall. The range of free comics is awesome, most series have at least the first issue free, or a 10 page sample or similar. And the ones to buy are great too. The reading experience is very neat in general, the guided flow is a nice touch so you only see what is currently important; with options to view the full page though.
I've found a few small problems, it can get into a state where it displays a default 'image not found' logo for some pages; after contacting them they said it's simply an out-of-memory issue and that restarting the app/device should fix it. It did and after that first time I haven't seen it since. Also, on the topic of buying comics, yes I have a problem. I mostly read the comics on the GTab, not on my hero for obvious reasons; but cannot purchase comics from my tablet, I have to go to the app on my phone or the web, and then buy, and then log out and back in on my tablet before it'll let me download the new comics. This is obviously kind of annoying, but logging in and out is quick and painless so not too bad.
So yeah, there are problems, but for all of the ones I've mentioned I've submitted feedback to the company and for the first two (not showing pages, deleting comics I no longer wanted from my device) I received prompt feedback by the end of the day with info on how to resolve it and for the final two (not buying comics, having a sync button to avoid the log in/log out issue) they just said they're planning many improvements over the next year. In general, an excellent app and my new favorite. Because they do have an awesome library of comics. Atomic Robo! Sandman! More!
As for ACV, I tried it and it's a very nice, simple interface and worked well for me on the tablet. But I don't have as many .cbr and .cbv files as I used to so I don't use it much. I got most of mine pirated and thought it was time to go legit.
+1 for JJ Comic viewer. After testing a few different readers, this one seemed the most stable and easy to use. Just got an update for it today too, so development is ongoing.

I've tried this one out on TnT-Lite 4.1.0, and it stays up for a second but then FC's. If I'm in the settings menu, it'll FC and go back to the regular menu. If I wait a second, it'll FC out of that and send me back to the desktop. Was there anything in particular you did to make it stable? This is a new install of TNT-Lite, so I'm wondering if it might be something in Spareparts that's causing it.
Any help would be appreciated.

Also, I want to read books on it (D'oh) So basically I want to optimize the Nook Color for use at school. The only thing I know for a fact is which ROM I'm gonna use. Which is MIUI. So here is the list that sums up the thread:
What is the best calculator app?
What is the best app to use as a notebook and which stylus should I use to tale notes with the app? This one is the biggy. I need the best Stylus for writing.
What is the best app to read books? (I'm thinking Aldiko Premium.)
What is the best OC settings to not have the NC's battery die?

Wow 6th grade! As a college student who is planning on using the nook for school, I too would like to know some suggestions.
As for books, the normal aldiko works great for me. I don't think premium has any real big additions to it.
Oc settings will differ, so place around with them now to get a feel for it now.

I like the Notion Ink calculator if you're thinking you need a scientific calculator.
I have yet to use a stylus on a capacitive screen so I have no idea.
Aldiko seems to be pretty good.
Ezpdf and docs2go have been a big help to me. The docs2go powerpoint viewer works beautifully in landscape. I use jorte as my calendar/scheduler/to do list. It syncs with google calendar and tasks.
I'll have to check out that calculator.

Technology has come a long way but not seen 'decent' stylus notetaking capabilities. I got my wife a stylus for the iPad and even that did not allow real notetaking. Used on the nook and was even worse.
An alternative suggestion (especially for apps) is to use Thumb Keyboard. I have used this to quickly write up information and the keyboard layout, especially in landscape, makes for easier typing. Marry this with Dropbox and Documents2Go and you have all your notes, presentation files, reader and spreadsheet capabilities. I understand these are paid apps (except for Dropbox) but these are good tools to have for anyone with info on the go. Also great to start notes on tablet, then finish off report/presentation on a laptop.
I think Google Apps has everything you need in terms of calendar/email/tasks to keep you on track. I don't have any suggestions as far as calculator apps go but spreadsheets will be the way you will likely end up (you do need to know the basics and be able to calculate by hand but spreadsheets are the way to go).
I really think the Nook (tablets in general) are best used for viewing information at the moment but am keen to see where technology goes in the future so was interested in your thread (so Thanks).

I grabbed Notion Ink's Calculator app, works awesomely, saved me from buying a new calculator!
Fooled around and decided to settle with 1.1 GHz on Powersave governor in class, 1.2 GHz w/ performance at recess.
I got QuickOffice HD so I can make Documents, will try out the other apps suggested though.

Notion Ink's Calc app no longer works anymore. I re installed and wiped data and stuff. So no go. Is there any other good-looking scientific calculator out there? Thanks.
Over Docs2Go, I picked QuickOffice HD like I said. It can make + read Word, Powerpoint, and Excel. Pretty nice.
Droid48, HP 48GX, best calculator ever made. You'll never run out of things you can do on it, and on the NC's screen it's gorgeous and fast.

Back when I was in college a million years ago I used it to keep notes on, track assignments and grades, wrote a dozen little nifty utilities to do random things for engineering school, etc.
Of course most of that you'd do in the NC directly these days, but there's a million tools out there for the HP48 if you're doing algebra, calculus, engineering, etc.. http://www.hpcalc.org/
I don't know how many times ALG48 (serious Algebra tools) and QPI (reduces number, such as 3.333333 = 10/3, or 1.25663706144 = (2/5)*pi )
Dont forget Wolframalpha. It requires a wireless link. Its more for a high school or college student.

Edit: Works well, but kinda hate the UI.
Don't waste your time looking for a stylus. The Nook screen does not respond to capacitive styluses well at all. I cannot be used for note taking that way. If you need to take notes with a stylus you're going to have to drop $580 for an HTC Flyer.
Just grabbed the Targus stylus... work pretty nice. It won't be a hardcore notebook, but it works. And the Flyer is know only $500 @ best buy., Magic Pen included. Whoop de doodle dim!
Download the new evernote app for tablets. Its in beta. It would work good for typed notetaking.

What about a small fold up or roll up bluetooth keyboard?
ikingblack, I know you said you've already gone with (and paid for) QuickOffice HD because it can create Word, Excel, and Powerpoint files but for other users info I want to point out that Documents2Go can also do all those in old and new document formats (.doc and .docx for example). It also includes a pdf viewer but ezpdf is better since it can reflow text and place multiple named bookmarks.
I'm interested in hearing about your experience taking notes with the stylus. Can it keep up? I can't help but think a keyboard would be faster but I haven't tried. It would certainly be very convenient for math to use a stylus but does handrite allow symbol and diagram input?
I actually had tried a bluetooth keyboard on my old iPaq (yes, that is HP iPaq using windows mobile 6.1). Just not as instantaneous and took up space. Remember, note taking is quick and instantaneous. I know the tech has come along way but don't underestimate the time it takes to bring out the keyboard, unfold, pair, etc., you would have lost the thought. This was always my problem which stopped me from using it. Just look around at how many people are using fold up keyboards as there primary input device. I'm struggling here to remember seeing any fold out keyboards compared to laptops or iPads.
I had a fold out IR keyboard for my Palm PDA years ago. Besides the keys being recessed into the case itself, making typing the Space key a pain, the alignment of the IR sensor and the battery seemingly always being dead.... Makes me cringe thinking about external keyboards.
I'd think they've gotten better. I actually saw someone with a better version doing the same thing taking notes in some classes, but I guess I went cheap. But I've never tried to take notes in class electronically, as I'm a tactile learner I suppose. Plus if I write the notes then transcribe them electronically it gives my cinder-block brain two attempts to learn it.

Right. Other users might want to use Docs2Go, but I already paid for QuickOffice HD. The Stylus cannot be used for full and hardcore note taking, but neither can the Flyer's Magic Pen. It is for simple scratch paper when you don't want to get up and get some. I am very happy with my stylus, it performs better then I expected. I don't need a BlueTooth Keyboard, I doubt the teacher would let me use it in class. The new TouchPal beta is great for me. All in all, I recommend this for school:
1 Targus Stylus for iPad (DO NOT get the one for tablet, it doesn't work well)
1 Nook Color (duh)
1 Copy of either QuickOffice HD, or Documents2Go + EZPDF
1 Copy of Handrite free from the Market
1 Copy of Jorte, for task management.
1 Copy of SOWGcalc (awesome UI, but not to advanced. Good for simple calculations.) and RealCalc, for more scientific stuff.
That's it. I am sure school will be great when it starts in 2 weeks with all of this stuff.
