I'm out of ideas - perhaps you have one . . .
When I launch my Cappy I'm taken directly to Android system recover <3e>, Samsung Recovery Utils - For BML. Lots of nasty error messages:
Can't mount DBDATA
Can't mounth dev/block/still (Invalid argument)
Can't mount CACHE: log/recovery.log
Can't open CACHE: log/recovery/recovery.log
Can't mounth dev/block/still (Invalid argument)
I can scroll between the options using the +/- buttons but cannot make a selection. I can also enter download mode. However, Windows/Mac cannot recognize my device. I've reinstall drivers and just about everything I can think of.
I think my SD internal memory is corupted as well as something related to device being recognized.
Any suggestions are more than welcome.

Thanks. I'll try that. But I can already get to download mode. Will see if getting there with the jig makes any difference.
Jig or no jig is the same. The jig will only trigger download mode which you can already (or still) use. Jig is only good when usb/vol button combo does not work anymore.
open device manager on your computer (click start, type "device manager", hit enter) do you see any "unknown devices"? if so right click and uninstall them, uninstall the captivate drivers through control panel, restart your computer, reinstall captivate drivers, reboot your computer, boot your phone into recovery, and plug it in. if windows recognizes it and loads the drivers, you're in luck and can one-click odin back to stock to fix those problems. if not, i'm sorry, but I have no idea what else to try.
Try reinstall drivers, then use Odin3 to reflash JF6.

Try a different USB port. Try it on another computer. Try with or without other USB devices that utilize a COM port. Mix the variables up . I had my phone stuck at the white ATT logo every boot once, and if you keep working at it, these phones come around. Best of luck.
Solved!
I'm stunned. My Cappy rose from the ashes as I was trying my third USB cable. Thanks to all for their suggestions. Now, back to reckless flashing,
Related
I had rooted my phone previously running 2.1 and yesterday decided to try cm7. (I've flashed many G1 roms but none for Captivate)
Sorry this is quite long but wanted to give as much detail as possible
I was reading and watching the guides. Installed rom manager and flashed ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.1.0
Rebooted the phone and tried to see if I can get into download mode by holding vol up + down and plugging the USB cable.
Once it booted tried to copy some other roms (zips) to the phone but the USB wasn't working on windows for some reason so rebooted in Linux. Phone mounted at first (for about a minute) but something happen and I lost the mount. I unplugged/plugged the usb cable but wasn't able see the phone as a drive even with fdisk.
So I ftped to the phone:
3buttonFix.zip
captivate-efsbackup.zip
cm7-captivate-initial-20110304.zip
speedmod-kernel-i897-k13c-500hz-CWM.zip
Installed 3buttonFix.zip (should let me enter download mode) from recovery, rebooted but still couldn't get in download mode.
Installed speedmod-kernel-i897-k13c-500hz-CWM.zip from recovery. Not sure if I had to do anything special like reformat the filesystem with the new kernel?
After reboot the phone gets stuck on Galaxy S sgh-i897 screen. Got back in recovery and installed captivate-efsbackup.zip and cm7-captivate-initial-20110304.zip
The cm7-captivate-initial-20110304.zip fails when trying to write the modem
'assert failed: write_raw_image("/tmp/modem.bin", "radio")'
I plugged the phone into another computer at that point and was able to get into "Download mode" for the first time. Odin didn't recognize the phone though. Download mode is very flaky. It starts sometimes, sometimes it doesn't (battery charger starts) even on the same port with the same cable. I have tried installing captivate drivers and/or kies on 7 different systems (5 laptops 2 desktops) but Odin never recognizes the phone and windows trows out a "USB Device Not Recognized" msg
I think my usb is not working properly but the guides how to recover assume working Download mode with Odin. Any suggestions on what to do for that? Or I guess I can download a different rom and/or kernel on my sdcard than mount the sdcard through recovery and install that way?
Any advise is appreciated as I'm not very familiar with the kernel and rom differences for captivate
Well you messed up on the instructions but that is a separate point.
I went through your post quickly so if I am saying something you grave tried I apologize
What drivers are you installing
Have you tried multiple ports
Are you using oem cord
Have you restarted your computer
Have you ever used odin before
CM7
I have used the following drivers:
SGH-i897_Captivate_USB_Drivers_5_02_0_2.zip
SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86.exe (just the usb modem driver)
2 different versions of samsung kies which include usb drivers (don't have the software versions handy but I can get them if that will help)
Ports:
Multiple computer and multiple ports. Will try few more options
Cables:
Used 3 different usb cables. 1 of them is from a BB phone. 1 of the other 2 is the one which came with the captivate (not 100% sure though)
Reboots:
4 of the 7 computers I tried on were rebooted. One version of kies requires this anyhow.
Odin:
Haven't used Odin at all. I think when the phone gets connected and odin recognizes it one of the top left blocks changes color right ? I tried to flash even when it didn't (just to make sure I wasn't missing something) and saw 0 successful / 0 failed
Do you have android sdk installed on any of the computers?
CM7
So many red flags that something wasn't right with your phone and you still tried to flash it? I just don't get it.
@Miami_Son: Yeah but i'm too thick headed - living dangerously but yeah you're right.
@mcord11758: I have android sdk installed on my linux build at home. I'll put it on a windows system at work and see if it can see the phone. Anything in particular I should do / look out for ?
At least you've got a good attitude.
I think if you have kies installed it conflicts with the samsung drivers odin uses. Try uninstalling them and flash odin.

Try this first
Sdk to install updated drivers if this fails
CM7
I've done almost the exact same thing...having the same issues. Phone would not connect to computer. Other captivates connect fine. The phone is now stuck on a boot screen and I can put it into download mode but Odin or the computer will not detect it at all. I don't think I can get into recovery mode, nor can I get into a rom...pretty much just download mode or a boot screen.
@1tontomato: Tried uninstall kies, reboot, install samsung usb drivers, reboot still don't see the phone connected in odin
@mcord11758 The sdk is trying to download the repository directly and I'm behidn a proxy server at work. I'll update tonight, it will be most likely very late by the time I get home.
@kwhee07 Yeah sux to see a download mode but not being able to download. I can get at least into recovery so I guess I can at least flash something that way. The ports really make difference, I've seen many would just charge the phone and some will get your phone into download mode at least. Try a different pc and cable if you can.
I have the sdk...I've tried about everything else I can find. Is there a possible method of fixing this via the SDK? I feel like if I could make the computer force [odins] data out the usb port, it would work, the phone would be in download mode awaiting data....but I cant get odin to see it
There is a package you can install in sdk for usb drivers. Dl it
Open odin
Get into dl mode
Unknown device pops up
Click on it
choose custom drivers
Navigate to c drive/program files/android/extras/google add ons/usb click ok (the path may be slightly different) the computer should try to install the correct drivers
If it works odin should now recognize your device. If not I got nothing
CM7
Got the USB drivers from the SDK and tried to force them when it sees an unknown device, but I get "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware"
I tried to force it to use the samsung drivers also but without success.
Is it possible to just download a rom or kernel and update my current state? So that the phone at least boots. I can install stuff through recovery. Download mode is nice and everything but I'm giving up on it, don't have any more ideas to try
I have been trying to see data on my sdcard from ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.1.0 I go to
Mounts and Storage -> mount /mnt/sdcard
Install *.zip from sdcard -> choose zip from sdcard
I don't see /mnt at all I try and go under sd/ but it says No files found.

Under mounts and storage do you see the option for mount usb this might be able to force your computer to see it as a removable drive. If out does you should be able to copy another rom to the sd and flash. This may or may not work for you because you might still need to repartition which you only do with odin. Take this advise with extreme caution I really think you need odin If you do decide to flash another rom, use cognition because Dg's includes the fixed boot.bin. Probably because so many people use the one click and kill their button combos and don't know it. Other devs don't include it in their roms, because it's dangerous to over write something that doesn't need to be overwritten. Good luck
Sent from my Fusion 1.8 SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
I tried already the usb mount option from recovery at home and now at work also on few different systems/ports including a linux machine. I don't see the drive connected.
My only option left is to get somehow the sdcard mounted and install a rom from there. Or maybe just repartitioning/changing the filesystem might fix the getting stuck problem.
I ended up bringing my phone back to att, and they said that the 1010 batch was under product advisory..they exchanged my phone with almost no questions asked.
Now i have a 1008 and am running CM7
Finishing up the story in case it might help somebody in the feature.
I called AT&T to get my phone replaced and it turns out it has liquid dmg. There's a little white sticky that turns red when there's liquid dmg. Mine was pink but wasn't wait so no warranty for me. Turns out most of the time people get liquid dmg is if they leave the phone in the bathroom or close to the kitchen's sink, which is kinda bs but whatever.
I've tried few more times. Tried even on a Mac and on a Linux system (using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755265 )
I was about to give up and go seek one of the 'professional rooters' but last thing I tried was to use an 'air duster' and clean the usb port on my phone. After that Odin was able to see my phone. The connection was dropping on/off but it successfully finished a flash.
Not sure if I should even try to put another rom or the official froyo update but at least for now I'm up and running
Thanks all
I don't really know what I messed up but my computer doesn't recognize my phone any more.

factory reset your phone.
Does it recognise in odin when in download mode?
The same issue. I have Ultibread 1.4 and wanted to flash the JVK but windows keep disabling it. Can't find the device either in normal state or in download state. Odin also didn't recognize it
I'm on win7 x86
Did a factory reset - still the same

Well this is brilliant! I have made it even worse. Well, there seems to be only a one solution.
You have to uninstall the phones drivers, and install them again.
Then plug your to your computer in download mode and it'll install rest of the drivers.
Then Odin should be able to recognize your phone and your good to flash stock.
But you really, really have to uninstall the drivers
Well I did it before. I uninstalled all related to samsung from the add/remove programs. Rebooted the pc and still getting this error. In the properties of the device in the device manager I have "unknown device". I don't have any drivers on the pc as far as I see. I install the drivers from here. Connect the device again and get the same error

Hmm.. I did change the computer.. Maybe you should put the drivers on a flash drive and go to your friends computer to flash.
The thing is that he does not have the drivers installed before either.
Don't know why it worked for me but... it worked.
I am going to try the last thing - I have a System backup from the time I definitely didn't have them on the PC and see if this helps....
Nope.... Didn't help.... I am completely desperate. Maybe anyone would have another magical solution?
Guys! ANy idea? Plzzzzz. I'd do anything to get it back to life
Me too i get "unknown device" when attached with usb in download mode...ive been trying to get it back workin for a week now...tried everything...which means i can't flash it to gingerbread

Hi!
I have a similar problem.
For few days, I cannot connect my SGS to my Notebook.
I have windows 7 x64 installed, and it has never had any problems with connections.
Now, I don't know why, but I cannot connect it.
I tried to connect it to another computer, which has windows 7 x86.
And it was succesfull!
Now, it seems, that I don't have a hardware issue, but I cannot imagne, how I could solve this problem.
I already tried these:
- remove drivers/programs
- tried other USB slots
- downloaded newer USB driver for x64
- removed USB drivers (all of them)
- unplugged my notebook for over 5 minutes (also removed the battery)
Every time I plug my SGS to my PC only this message appears:
"unknown device" - or something similar, because I have a hungarian windows 7.
Sorry about my english.
Has anyone any idea?
Thx for advance

But I don't see the Libusb tab in device manager when I plug my phone in.
When u initially installed the drivers for Heimdall, they only installed to the usb port that u were connected to. So u need to be plugged into that specific port and then u should see it in the Device Manager.
And u really don't need to uninstall the drivers that u need for Heimdall, as long as u installed them after u installed the drivers from Kies. See this post... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19998299&postcount=115

happened to my cappy yesterday. went through 7 hours to fix mine. had the same issue as yours. no download mode showing with any combo I try even recovery had 4 micro usb cables and still my pc is choosy. that screen is actually download mode. you just need the proper drivers for the pc to read it. What did you try before it was recognized? Did you just plug and replug the usb into the computer until it worked?
Mine did this before, when I accidently forgot to convert back to RFS before flashing back to stock, and I thought I was totally screwed. After this screen comes up the first time it will not go away, even if a download jig is used, until you get a good flash.
Try this:
Open your Odin, and have it ready with whatever you were trying to flash to begin with. Pull the battery on your phone, put your download jig in, and now put your battery in. It will still be the error screen that comes up. Pull your jig, and now plug your phone in. It should show on Odin now, and this flash should take correctly.

Windows 7 recognizes EXT4 so that's not the issue, otherwise everyone who flashes roms and plays with their phone would have the same issue.
Try the cord, apart from that if you can't get any PC to recognize it in download mode it may be hardware related.

it didn`t work yesterday when I tried in a XP windows...I guess that the problem isn`t with Drivers, cause any PC is recognizing it...
The problem presented at CWM is the same that the other thread at this page.

I'm having trouble understanding your posts. From what I can gather we have eliminated a driver, PC or cord issue. Why do you think it is CWM issue when the phone is not even recognized in download mode?

I have tried reinstall Samsung Driver, no sucess...
I have used a different USB cord, no sucess...
I have tried using another PC and nothing!
The 3 Buttons options still working even for CWM (then I can`t do anything cause the unknow mount/ storage problem)....and in Download Mode the WIn7 Doesn`t Recognize it.
I hope you understand me...sorry about my English!
CWM Unable to Delete files
I continue in trouble...my SGS isn`t working, the CWM mode can`t wipe, delete or install anything...always the "E: unknow mount"
The Download Mode still not working!
What were you doing when this issue started?
I was restoring
I was trying to restore the update.zip file...I was using the MyICS and later the ICS RC4.2 ...but I`ve decided to return to the stock, wipe data/ factory reset and then: no more boot (only i9000 appears and stay)
HI, I`m using a program USBDeview and it can "see" my device although it doesn`t recognize as a SGS or i9000 or anything related.
I`ve been reading something related to ADB and PDAnet, but everytime that someone says to put my device in Debugging mode ON and continue the steps, I have to stop cause I can`t turn ON my SGS...I suppose that before the last time I used it I let the debugging MODE OFF...so my PC and any other PC will recognize it.
Any other idea/ solution?
Thanks a lot...but I still don`t have a phone,
I`ve been trying to solve my problem but no succes until now!

I still have the CWM 3.0 issue (not abble to install/ restore/ apply zip...anything caude it doesn`t acces to storage/ mount)
I still have to DOwnload Mode, but unabble to the FLASH ANYTHING by Odin.
Thanks a lot...but I still don`t have a phone,
What happens when you open Odin and then plug it in in download mode?
Have you tried to mount or unmount storage in CWM?
If you can't wipe anything through CWM and can't get any PC to recognize it in download mode unfortunately it sounds like you have either bricked your phone or you have hardware issues.
You've probably tried it, but, pull your battery out for a minute and then try everything again, apart from that there's nothing else I can help you with. Maybe start searching for tricks on how to unbrick an sgs.
Good luck mate and keep me posted on your progress, I'll help where I can.

The battery trick I've tried too.
Hi all...I have a very big problem. when I plug my tab into my pc it recognizes it with no problem until I try it in download mode the I get a message saying that my usb port has malfunctioned. Then I switch back to any other mode and its connects again with no problem until. I don't know what to do. I'm 2.2 and rooted but just want to install cwm or twrp recovery, update to 2.3 gingerbread and maybe flash a Rom. I can't connect to odin or the other when in download mode but they recognize it in regular mode with no problem. Please any help will do.
Can you stop Kies?
Or uninstall it, and only install Samsung usb driver.

I have most def tried that but no good. I'm stumped, I wish it was some way to install a recovery from my sdcard.
I guess you only have 3 (or 4) options to try:
- try heimdall
- try on another PC
- boot a livecd linux and and install heimdall on it.
(if you have a spare hard disk, just remove the current one, and stick a new disk and install a clean OS)

Sounds like I really only have 2 options
1. Try another computer because I've tried Heimdall and it's the same as Odin. It connects to both when in normal mode or even Samsungs recovery mode but when i put it in download mode, it's a no go.
2. Just stay on a rooted 2.2 (which sucks)
Are you using the original cable?
Heard of some issue with non original, but I have a non original that works for me.
Also,
- factory reset, then boot to download mode, start Odin on PC, then lastly, connect the tab
- or may worth going to Device Manager, uninstall the driver, and delete the device (not sure if that is doable, not in front of a Microsoft OS), then click the scan for changes again to let it detect.

Sounds like that factory reset option might work, I'm going to try that when I get home around 10:30. I'll let you know how it goes.
update.....well I tried the factory reset plan and it didn't work....In download mode I still get the same message stating that one of my usb ports have malfunctioned. I'm going to try it from another computer tomorrow.....hopefully the problem is with my computer and not the device.
