[Q] Should I change my Radio and SPL to the newest? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am rather new to the G1 section and sorry if this is a stupid question.
I have an unlocked Rogers HTC Dream 9used on Bell) and my current radio and spl are: 3.22.26.17 and 1.33.2005. I was wondering if it is recommended if I upgrade to the new radio (2.22.28.25) and SPL (1.33.0013d). I was wondering what the the advantages (besides the ram increase) of a 2708+ kernel.
Thanks.

The ram increase is enough of a reason to update. I also had some random lockups on the 3.xx radio.

Okay thanks for the info. Your input is appreciated.

I wouldn't do it until battery drain issues are resolved, i know it's a problem for a lot of people. Rebooting after unplugging isn't a good answer to the problem either

If your existing setup is working fine now, why take the chance of f'n it up for the possible promise of something better?
If, on the other hand, you're existing setup is all f'd up ...or otherwise not working out for you ...then go for it.

Scared to post but I am stuck must take your wrath

Aloha everyone,
I have tried to not post for about 3 weeks but I just can't move forward. I have read and tried to follow everything on the site but I am just confused. I know this is a developers site and I am very intimiated to be castigated by you guys but...it's the internet so what the hell.
I have found numberous instruction threads pertaining to updating ROMS on the Wizard. It seems that up until recently there was only one way to do things but now there are many. As I try to answer questions I come into conflict over which way I shoudl be heading.
I currently have a working WIZ100 that boots with IPL 2.21.0001 SPL 2.21.0lip with GSM 2.25.11 and OS 2.25.11.1. I somehow got to this point, I think by following the instructions to get hardSPL on my device and booting on startup. I did not know if I next needed to find a ROM and if so then how to get that ROM activated on my device or what programs to do this with. I know that the threads spell it out but the threads pertain only to direct assumptions; the assumption that my head is not in my ass.
I wanted to attempt to put a new rom on here, for fun and to play around with something new. Perhaps increase reliability or to get WM6 going. I am stuck now though. Part of me wants to turn back and load the original ROM from the HTC site and the other part of me wants to try a new ROM as I already have this thing booting to the 0lip SPL.
Is anyone out there willing to help me either via this thread, personal message or IM?
Since you have already installed Hard SPL you should be safe to go ahead and pick virtually any ROM you choose on there. I don't have a lot of experience with Hard SPL yet, except for installing it on my kaiser, but the one thing I would guess that you should make sure that the ROM you want to flash doesn't have would be an IPL/SPL update included. As far as I know, I don't think any of the public ones that you find on here have them but make sure you read the chef of the ROM's entire post to make sure. And, if you magically happen to find my ROM somewhere, which you shouldn't since I only gave it to 2 people to try, don't flash it because mine does include an IPL/SPL update.
From my best understanding you have already loaded HardSPL and now are CID unlocked. If this is the case then I would recommend going forward and flashing a new rom to your device. Just go to the Wizard Mobile 6 thread and find one you like, and flash it.
Simple as that.
I appreciate your replies.
1) I am clarified like butter! What program do I download and use to flash the ROM to the Wiz, this has been a source of confusion for me.
2) If I download and install the HTC Cingular ROM from HTC, will that overwrite the HardSPL and return my phone to Factory Default, including the radio areas? In other words do I rid myself of 2.21.0lip?
Thanks for not beating my head in...very polite you devs are...
I like beating people's heads in, and you are far too polite, that I am actually having a very slight guilty twinge! Damn you. I have a G3 myself so I cannot help much, however, I found this sticky which may help.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=332320
I do know that once you choose your rom, you open the folder and run the item marked as ruu.
Now if you only had a G3, then I could fry you like the noob you are.
I suppose at some point, I should make a point of reading/learning about G4's. I know they are a far different animal from my G3.
That's the reason I said not to flash a ROM that contained an IPL/SPL upgrade since there is the possibility that it may overwrite Hard SPL, although I'm not positive of that, but better safe than sorry especially if it it's not an official ROM that carries the correct IPL/SPL format for a G4. If it doesn't contain the correct format for a G4 it could ruin your phone. If you flash an official ROM though and it overwrites it you can always just reinstall Hard SPL again and keep flashing. I hope this makes sense.
As for the files you need to flash a new ROM, they're usually included with the ROM. If they're not then just let me know and I'll upload them for you.
Good that you asked before damaging your (expensive) device...
Every Flash version comes with a RUU (Rom Update Utility) you just run that proggy and it does the rest.
To make it easier, look for a rom that states it's G4 safe (no IPL/SPL included), so you don't have to mess around with the inner files. If you want to, begin your tests with the TNT series, the latest build, stated in my sig is G4 safe, after that you'll be able to know the initial procedure.
Good Luck.
Thanks for the info.
Do I execute the ruu from Windows XP or from the SD card ont he device?
Why am I have a hard time searching for and finding TNT 5.2.1921 TouchFlo ROM?
The rom update utlity gives me an error when I try to update. Should I try to do all this from the sd card?
Well, I am plugging along. I rebooted after an error 300 came up on the rom utility. Any suggestions for me?
I found this thread, back in business, thanks for your help guys.
I guess my only unanswered question is...if I use the HTC ATT exe from htc.com will it kill the hardSPL and restore the computer back to normal?
If you have ROM on your desktop, Connect your phone to your computer via USB, open up Activesync, uncheck the check box in settings that allows USB connections. Make sure you have at least 50% battery, then put your phone into bootloader mode. (soft reset while holding down the camera button- keep holding the button for 5 sec.) a tri-color RGB screen should come up. This is boot loader mode. Then run the rom update utility program, and everything is automatic from there on. once it is done flashing the phone will restart itself.

Try it and find out. I'd kind of like to know the answer to that one too, although my phones a G3 and already CID unlocked anyway. You can always reinstall Hard SPL over again if it does.
So this worked out well for me overall. Installing HardSPL to my G4, and then using a correct bootloader with the right ROM (to review).
I am having one issue.
I have the OEM ROM, however the RUU gives me an error. Is there a documented way to restore the phone to an original status? Is it even necessary?
I ask due to problems since my upgrade to the TNT rom. I am noticing a lot of missed calls and people have complained. Is this an issue with the 8125 and the particular ROM?
I don't know what to ask, or how to search for this. Thanks for any input you can offer.
Otherwise the TNT rom is awesome. I do miss the voice dialing though. Thats another search.
Actually, that's usually an issue with your radio version. Try using either version 2.19 or farias 2.69 and see if that fixes your problem. You should be able to find both of them in the wiki and you may want to try both of them and see which one gives you the better reception because sometime one will work much better than the other for you depending on your location.
By the way, you don't have to be CID unlocked or have hardspl installed to update your radio so you shouldn't have an issue with the RUU giving you an error. If you do, let me know and I'll upload a different RUU for you to try.

So the Rom is broken up into major parts. Those parts must ineract with one another, so that would be why my radio version may be at cause?
Yep. The ROM can contain the IPL, SPL, OS, Splash Screens, GSM (the radio), and extended ROM, any of which can be changed or upgraded individually without affecting the other parts of the ROM (for all intents and purposes anyway). That means you can change your radio version without it deleting all of your settings or your installed apps in your OS, etc etc.
Since you still upgrade each individual part using a RUU that is able to update any of the parts you still get a warning when you run it that it will delete all of your files, but as long as the update that you're running doesn't include a new OS you can ignore those warnings.
I decided to back out of the entire upgrade and move back to WM5 Official Cingular HTC ROM. I am stoked that I now know the full process of taking a G4 through hardSPL, ROM updates and restoral.
I was too scared to try any radio updates or fixes. Maybe when I upgrade phones I will come back to playing with the 8125 but for now, I just need a good functioning phone for work.
Do these Cingular radio fix cabs apply to a standard phone or only to upgraded ones?

[Q] Please explain to me...

Hello everyone and sorry for starting a new thread with so many threads already about installing custom ROMs. So sorry again....
First of all I want to say that I have installed Saturday my first custom ROM.
1. I installed HardSPL
2. I installed ROM (I got an error first time because my usb got diconnected - tricolour boot screen and an error code - could not see it; second time everything worked fine and I have now a new great looking ROM
3. I did not installed Radio.
1st question: Do I have to install Radio everytime I install a new ROM or is it ok if I keep my old Radio? - the phone works just fine.
Second question: Do I have to HardSPL everytime I install a new ROM?
Please be kind and reply to my questions even if it must have been already posted in some thread.
rarely can i answer a question but yours are easy LOL
You don't need to do your radio because the radio you have is untouched by roms.
Likewise if you do a radio it wont change your rom.
Radio's probably will not make much diffrence.
Once you have Hard spl it is done.
You can then flash as many roms as you want , but Hard Spl is just once
No and No.
Thank you guys.
The radio is stored on a different part of the memory then the ROM, so it doesn't get replaced when you flash a ROM (unless the ROM specifically includes it, like the new "official leaked" ATT ROM). And custom ROMs will never include the radio, that I know of.
A newer radio version MAY get you better battery life or GPS reception. But it can be very specific to your geographic location. It your choice whether to update your radio or not, its certainly not required. If you want, you are free to experiment, as you can always go back to the old radio if the new one doesn't work out. The process for flashing a new radio is essentially the same as flashing a ROM, except the actual process if done very fast.
As already mentioned, you only need to HardSPL once. The only way phone will become SPL locked back to factory condition is if you specifically do so using the provided relocker program on the SPL thread (for instance, to return the phone for warranty repair).

[Q] Which compatible radio

First of all, i am very sorry if i made a stupid Question because of my noobs. But i am preparing to flash DangerSPL onto my G1, and still dont know which radio should be chosen. I've been spending hours reading info from several posts on xda but cant find answer yet
There are two radios compatible with DangerSPL
2.22.23.02 for T-mobile/US
2.22.19.26i for Non-US
My current radio is 2.22.20.23
That's what I can't get through. My G1 is a QWERTZ one, which I guess it's a Non-US and 2.22.19.26i is better for me? But the first one is mentioned much more frequently in posts, means it's famous/or better than the other?
Please help me figure out
Thanks very much, and sorry again for my stupid Q

Ok, to be successful. You will need to FLASH the radio before the SPL.
You can find both the radio and SPL here http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/
DO NOT attempt to downgrade your radio at anytime after installing this SPL as it WILL brick your phone.
If you have additional questions you can read up on the thread here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=517593
and here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=625886
Please make sure you read all the posts first before you flash your phone. I hope that helped.
ok thanks much for your help
But those stuffs have been reading over and over by me, and i still can't find out which radio should i flash. The 2.22.23.02 (which refers to smth more common and used by more people) or the 2.22.19.26i ? The sapphire-port-dream website says that the 26i is the latest version
This my first time flashing radio and upgrading to DangerSPL, so i'm very scared of bricking =.= Can you figure out for me which one is for my phone ? Thanks ^^
BTW, my board is a PVT one, rooted, but the very first bootscreen contains a grey and blur G1 in the center and a "T-mobile" (with the red T and four white dots like in the logo of T-mobile) at the bottom of the screen. It's not the all-white-big-centered "T-mobile G1" like most of those i see on the google or youtube. Is there anything important ?
(I can't post images along with this bcause of the new member's restricted right, so i will attact them instead. The worse quality one is mine)

Splash screen can be changed. To check go to bootloader, power on the phone holding camera button and see what do you have..it will show if you have 32A or 32B board.
1.33.2003 is compatible with 1.x and 2.x radios
1.33.2005 is compatible with 2.x and 3.x radios
So 2.x radio is safest. The combination has to be maintained otherwise you can brick the phone.
DO NOT INSTALL DEATHSPL!!!!
There is NO REASON for it!
What people use it for is obtaining a different flash partition layout on the internal memory. THERE ARE BETTER WAYS TO ACCOMPLISH THIS!!!!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=717874
The DEFAULT setup of this yields you a SYSTEM partition that is the SAME SIZE as deathspl, and a USERDATA partition that is ***FIFTEEN MEGABYTES LARGER*** than deathspl.
Install SPL 1.33.2003 (ending with a THREE) and any 2.X radio ***IN ANY ORDER IT DOESN'T MATTER***. ZERO brick risk, and SUPERIOR to deathspl.
Further information;
1) PVT/DVT, DESPITE what some of the feeble minded morons who don't know what they're talking about claim, ****IS IRRELEVANT****. There is *NO DIFFERENCE* between a PVT and a DVT.
2) ALL DREAMS (100% there is not a SINGLE exception) are 32B. The ONLY device where there is any question of whether it is a 32A or B is MAGIC.
Thanks so much lbcoder
It's because i think that deathspl is the only hope in order to get to Cyanogen or CaNNoN roms. And flashing radio and spl somehow is the most risky step :|
Did you mean that, by following that Firerat's guide, i am enabled to flash SPL 1.33.2003 and radio 2.xx in any order? Is 1.33.2003 deathspl or not ? And i want to flash CaNNoN CE 2.2.1, so is this good for me
^^ Thanks again
It doesn't appear that you bothered to read either what I said or the thread I linked you to. READ AGAIN!
There is NO BENEFIT TO DEATHSPL. It does NOTHING USEFUL. There are BETTER WAYS to accomplish the same thing that do NOT involve ANY kind of RISK!

The SPL has NOTHING to do with what you can flash to the phone. You do NOT need deathSPL. It is POINTLESS. The ONLY thing you accomplish with the deathSPL is that you RISK BRICKING YOUR PHONE!
I suggest the 1.33.2003 SPL because it is a FULL ENGINEERING SPL that is 100% compatible with 0.95.x000 (the SPL that your phone SHIPPED WITH). **IT WILL NOT BRICK**.
Using the recovery-installable patches supplied by Firerat will enable you to flash ANY system image to your phone. NO EXCEPTION.
Ok ok. I am a stupid man, so please don't blame on me ^^
Let me ask a very last question. As i can see from your advise, after flashing those CustomMTD, i can flash ANY system image(ROMs) to my phone without upgrading to 2.xx or the pointless dealthy spl. Is it right? In other words, i still can use CM or CE roms with 0.95.x000 radio?
And is it harmful or not if i want to upgrade to 2.xx radio? (still want smth new :"> )
well, no one ?
0.95.x000 is default SPL, not radio.
You have to flash new SPL (if you're still on default), but not Haykuro/Death/Danger/Apocalipse (1.33.2005) which is not compatible with 1.x radios (and this is common reason of brick), but so called SafeSPL (1.33.2003) which has same low-level access to phone (fastboot, so it's giving you as much as 2005), but it is compatible either with 1.x radios and 2.x radios, so there is no chance to brick.
After you have engineering SPL (2003 or 2005, but in this case we're talking about 2003) you can use MTD Partition Hack to change partition layout on your phone (same thing that is Haykuro doing, but now you can manually resize them in order to get more place for apps in internal memory). This is needed for 2.1+ and Sense ROMs, because they do not fit in standard 70 mb /system partition (they need 90).
When you have both new SPL and /system big enough, you can flash EVERY ROM you want. If there is requirement for HaykuroSPL in OP of ROM thread, IGNORE IT. This is requirement for 90mb /system partition, which now can be achieved also by MTD PH.
Upgrading to 2.x radio is recommended, new radio means better signal reception and less battery drain.
Thank you very much raven. Your answer is very clear and kindly. So, now I have to flash SafeSPL, then MTD PH, and after that I can use any ROMs, and 2.x radio are optional (can flash or not, can flash after the safespl, it doesnt matter) right? I am so excited. Thanks again
I think this order is correct:
Custom recovery (Amon RA or Clockworkmod, ignore this step if you already have custom recovery)
SafeSPL
MTD PH (recovery patch)
ROM flash
MTD PH (ROM/boot patch)
Optional: 2.x radio.
I am glad to help and your thanks made my day . Just remember to put
Code:
90 2
in mtdpartmap.txt on root of sd card to prepare enough space for 2.x ROMs. You may also have to fake Haykuro SPL, which is simply done by editing mtdpartmap.txt in this way
Code:
90 2
spl 1.33.2005
Remember to patch recovery, wipe data&cache&system, reflash/nandbackup ROM and flash boot patch after every change in mtdpartmap.txt.
Thanks again ^^
But i still have a minor question before flashing all those stuffs. Raven please view this post :here and give me an advice whether i should continue according to lbcoder or not ?
quite useful infos. i was about to flash deathSPL, but the fact that the MTD layout gives me 15mb more space, not to mention it cant brick, seriously tempts me.

[Q] G1 Radio for Cyanogen CM6-DS

What is the latest Radio Update for the G1 that i can use so i can make sure im getting the best possible connection cause i just got the unlimited data plan today, and i wanna make sure it as great as possible, thx
2.22.28.25 but you will need to flash a perfected spl to avoid brick.
umm its for usa t-mobile g1/dream phones rite? and if so where is the page? and where is this spl
Yes, it is for USA G1 and I have tested it before. I do not use it anymore because it is a perfected SPL and I find it annoying to not be able to use all the functions of fastboot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139&highlight=2708
Please read the instructions thoroughly. If your device does not boot after applying update, then i will link you to a dreaimg.nbh to return to rc29 to root, and flash your custom rom again.
did you use it on CM6-DS? or what rom did u use it on? and is it better than the 2.22.23.02 radio?
I feel it is about the same.. The reception is the same except for the extra 15mb memory available, there really isn't a difference. It's not worth it for me giving up the danger-SPL with all the fastboot functions for the perfected SPL with only 2 options.
I used it on CM6.1-DS.

[Q] [SOLVED!] Rogers HTC Dream, change over to EBI0--clear up some misinformation

My phone is missing calls and texts, and about every 3 hours the phone part stops working. I've seen a bunch of comments from Rogers users that say their data goes down, and I've heard it's due to the radio. I think my phone goes down as well because on Telus, they don't have a GSM network so both data and voice/text is going through the 850/1900. I *think* that's what UMTS means; I could be mistaken.
So, after a lot of research, I think what I want to do is install a 2.xx radio on my phone, which means going from EBI1 to EBI0. MY QUESTIONS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
1. Does going EBI1 -> EBI0 by changing the radio to 2.22.23.02 change the radio frequencies? As in, will I still be able to connect to TELUS or is it going to change it to the 1700/2100 range? My research tells me NO but I wanted to double-check.
2. Am I going to lose 15MB of ram by making the switch?
3. I don't know what the correct sequence of stuff to make the switch is. From what I can tell, I've been told to use fastboot ONLY to do this switch:
a. Nandroid backup through amon-ra 1.7.0R
b. Flash 2.22.23.02 through amon-ra
c. Flash amon-ra 1.7.0 non-R verson
d. Install (e.g.) Cyanogen 6.1 again, but don't do the EBI1 kernel this time.
Reference: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6136326
Does that all look correct?
4. Maybe I can just go with this exact sequence?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139
Can I use my current SPL to do the flashing or should I start by changing over?
I've got a Rogers HTC Dream, running the latest Cyanogen 6.1, unlocked on TELUS' UMTS/HSDPA network (850/1900). From the FASTBOOT screen:
DREAM PVT 32B ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-1.33.2005 (DREA21000)
CPLD-4
RADIO-3.22.26.17
Apro 20 2009,15:30:43
Thanks, from a clueless android newbie!
P.S. I think (?) this is my first post here, at least on the android side of the fence, so hi all!
So I took the plunge and did this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139
Of course, learning the following:
1. Careful means I don't brick my phone;
2. I was GAINING ~10MB of ram, not losing it, and
3. If I still get disconnects, it's either faulty hardware or TELUS' fault at this point.
Thanks for a great forum!
I am convinced it is the hardware. I had a magic at first with no connection problems, I traded someone for a Dream and have nothing but issues. Frustrating...

Um.. can't say for your phone.. but most people have 3g issues with 3.22.26.17 ... 3.22.20.17 and 2.22.28.25 are usually fine.. (well rogers policy of terminating your data plan aside on the theory it fixes the e911 bug in rogers original firmare [has nothing to do with the radio version its just what they use to check you have upgraded, actual bug was in the android java code].. but op left them for telus who will advise the customer update to a firmware w/o the bug.. but isn't checking what is installed on the end user's 3rd party phone)
I'm just not sure how well e911 works if you use 3g with 3.22.26.17 and lost network without the phone knowing.. at the very least it must take a long while to connect as it re-establishes the connection.. but as htc/rogers has not fixed it they are either not getting complaints, blaming it on the old version. Or everyone using it is stuck on 2g anyway since they want inbound calls to work.. thus bypassing the e911 part of the issue.. but making rogers "fast network" look very slow.I
Wow what a coincidence, I was going to post in this thread your Offical AOSP 2.2 rom because it is what i've been using for the past week with zero issues. I have decent 3g now with no disconnections!
