Ordered an NC and received it last night. I opened it and found smudges on the screen as if someone tried cleaning it, and there were a few flakes of glitter around the casing. WTF, isn't selling returns/refurbs as new illegal? On top of that the back squeaks and there are a couple of specks of dust behind the glass but on top of the LCD.
I haven't, but I purchased it in store. Not sure if it's illegal or not, but definitely not a good practice.

im 99% sure its based off the reasoning.
IE
if they're knowingly doing it, then it is.
if it was a return or something that someone accepted as new because they were an idiot, I think its legal
Well, it's going back for an exchange since I can't stand the case creaking.

Yeah, one of my gripes for the one I have. I decided I'm going to return it on my way home from work tonight. I might change my mind later and buy another, but for now I would rather just put the money towards something a little faster.

I bought mine in the store in Portland and it had smudges on the screen too. I also found that when the power in connected it freaks out like a thousand fingers are touching it all at once. it starts typing and opening and closing books all kinds of crazy. I took mine back when I got home (Spokane, WA) and exchanged it, though doing so wasn't that easy, here's were it gets fun...
I saw an employee cleaning up books and I ask who I could talk to about my nook, she said "the guy up there", indicating the nook display, and I restated my requested adding that mine was purchased the same day and was broken, she then directed me to the same guy and suggested he might be "able to do something". I guess she thought it was ok that I was sold a defective product and they could make it work for me.... so I start talking to the guy and he makes it sound like I'm asking him to break the law so I can exchange it, at this time the woman walks up again and listens for a minute and after explaining for the third time what was happening and stating that I just purchased it that day, the woman says "did you buy the warranty?"..... I gave her my best, are you an idiot, look and said again... I just bought it today.. so the guy reluctantly decides to exchange the nook for me and we go up to the register, he then gets a manager to put in some numbers so he can exchange it, but because I purchased it the same day they needed the GM/store manager/something important (i guess) to approve the "same day, different store" transaction... Now I'm getting frustrated because I have to wait and wait and wait finally this person comes around the corner and who is it????? THE FIRST PERSON I SPOKE TO WHEN I WALK IN TO THE STORE!!!!

I have a Nexus One... and this is my 3rd swap. The phone I have now has a slightly more pink tinted screen than any other one I've seen. I ordered my 3rd swap, and it just came to my door. I opened it up... only to discover this one has a one spec of dust under the screen!
Why am I being sent defective or damaged units? Should I keep doing swaps until I get one that's normal? What do you guys think?
This is my 3rd swap, so I am pretty pissed.
I can understand being picky about a product that you just shelled out $500 for. It sounds like its nagging you already and if you keep it, it will just continue to nag.
Like an itch you can't scratch.
Sounds like you need to send back until your satisfied. However, dont be surprised if HTC gives you a more difficult response each time you swap.
Hell yeah. why can't they just send me a new one or a Refurb thats FULLY TESTED. How stupid do you have to be to not a dust under the screen!? All you have to do is look...

damn i feel ur pain!
just ordered a phone to norway for my gf, hope to god nothing is wrong with it. will be a PITA to send it back etc...
*goes down on his knees and prays for an ok phone*
I'm going to keep swapping until I get one thats normal. $570 should not be wasted on a device that can't even pass DUST INSPECTION. I'm actually sending back the swap I just got, and the rep said he will send me another after that one arrives to them. Another 1 week of waiting for a phone that might also have issues.
HTC, BRING IT ON! I have 3 months of summer vacation. I will keep swapping.
I swapped five (5) TP2s on sprint, the first of which was bought new without rebates. eventually the hard keyboard just quit working entirely. every swap I got back was an obvious refurb. squishy keys, keys that didn't work, rough slider, etc.
htc has no problem collecting five hundred bucks a year or so from me, but refuses to stand behind their products. it's unfortunate, but my fault for continuing to support them. too bad the other manufacturers are so far behind for android and winmo phones..
I also did a swap for different phone because i had the dust under the screen issue. I received the replacement, but did notice 1 spec of dust under this one too. I didnt let it bother me, but maybe I should. From shelling out $530 for a phone, i guess we should expect something that should be "perfect" before leaving the factory.

One spec of dust? Seriously? Man, you're anal haha
How the hell can you see 1 spec of dust anyhow??
Anyway, get a microfiber cloth and wipe it down. You'd be surprised at how things look like they're under the screen, when they're really not.
If that doesn't help, no I don't think you should keep sending it back. As the previous person mentioned, it's like an itch you can't scratch; you'll always find something wrong. Get an Evo or Incredible if you can switch carriers. Otherwise, get a Backflip?
That one spec gets annoying.
So do you have microscopes for eyes or what?
Ok here's the test: give the phone to a friend/family member/etc and tell them, "Inspect my phone; do you see anything wrong?"
If they can get the spec of dust without you saying anything, send it back. If they can't, just enjoy man. If it gets worse, then send it back. Remember, you have 365 days to replace it!
Yea, especially in the browser, when its all white, the dust is all black. I'm just anal about a $600 device being untested during QA. I guess I'll be keeping the one with the pink screen tint instead. Might swap after though. Again.
Okay here is my problem, the screen on my nexus one cracked (on the inside under the glass) twice in a span of 6 months and HTC is trying to make me pay to fix it. There is *absolutely nothing* that I can think of that can even possibly cause the screen to break. It cracked twice at approx. the same place near the TOP of the screen. I've been using cellphones for the past 13yrs, had 2 iPhones and none of them broke like this. Very bitter taste in my mouth after using the Android and HTC platform for the first time. As it stands right now, I would rather have an iPhone4 with a defective antenna than to have choosen Google and HTC.
So here is my question: How many people are having the same problem? If you see my same question in other forums, please don't answer twice. I am a real user, a real person. After people start responding, I'm going to forward my threads to the reporter at cnet that had the same problem to hopefully have Google recognize this issue.
*If you DO NOT have this problem, but have an opinion to post, I deeply appreciate your opinion, but please don't do it here. This is strictly to see how often this is happening to N1 users.*
i cracked my screen but i dropped it on concrete a couple times so i can not blame google/htc for that.
however since I am rooted and my warranty is already void I plan to change the screen out myself when the new digitizer comes in.
Here is a link to buy the digitizer:
http://www.repairsuniverse.com/google-nexus-one-touch-screen-digitizer-replacement.html
And here is a link of a tutorial on how to fix it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTRXSMQ-GJY
Dont be scared that its 45 parts, they are very short each.
BTW if you know your thread is a question and even label it as such, dont you think this belongs in the Q&A thread?

No, it's a polycarb, but not Gorilla. Also the OP described the display cracking, not the digitizer (glass on the outside).
I have owned my N1 for 6 months now. My screen has never cracked and it remains in my pocket most of the day. Including at work where I go back and forth from coolers to hot grills constantly.
I understand you don't want people to reply if their screen didn't crack, but you can't get a fair judgement of how often this happens if only people with cracked screens can reply.
Heres my update: After numerous emails and phones calls back and forth, HTC finally agreed to fix my phone free of charge.
My advice for ppl having the same problem: Be honest, tell them what happened. Stay firm but respectful. Make sure they understand your dismay, but do not make it personal - the person on the other line is just following company guidelines and doing their jobs.
I dont know what did it, cause first I was offered 20% off then 50% off the repair costs (which I still think is bullsh!t, if the customer is at fault, then he/she should pay full to get repairs, if the device is bad, then HTC should fix it for free to boot, not offering "discounts"). But the last message I sent to HTC before getting the free repair offer was I quoted the CNET reporter that had hers replaced for free as well.
My experience with their customer service? Seeing as how I finally got justice in the end, I'm a lot happier than I could be. But the process is far, farrr from easy and what it should be.
And if anyone is wondering, I'm selling my N1 as soon as I get it back. Cause from my experience, the hardware design is clearly faulty. If it can break once and twice, there is no doubt in my mind that it will break a third time.
Weird that the OP is the only one reporting a cracked screen twice, when it's even rare to hear a screen cracked once. Unless you drop the N1 numerous times that is. Now i'm curious how the OP handles his N1.
Oh you know he keeps it in his skin tight pants pocket with his keys.
Just joking, I honestly don't know. I've scratched my screen (small scratches only noticeable when screen is black) but I've drooped it a few times and keep it my NWU (think cammo) pants pocket and no breakage yet.
I don't think the AMOLED will just crack from usage...
I cracked mine, but I dropped it on concrete face down. It was a sad day.
I'm not C.Ronaldo, and I dont wear tight jeans. I work in a bank and wear trousers with loose pockets. I keep my keys and change in my attache. If you dont think this is happening, do a google search for "nexus one cracked screens". Maybe this is restricted to the first few batches made, cause I ordered mine the day it was available. I honestly have no idea.
But if you are a N1 owner, and you're thinking that this "doesn't happen" - good luck with that, and I hope you will find my post useful when the time comes.
First post, hello everyone.
I've dropped my N1 from about 10 ft in the air, whilst ghost riding my SUV. The top right corner is where contact was made with the asphalt. It came to rest face up. The only damage was a bit of a nick out of the metal where first contact was made. Thank god.
People, there is a piece of outer glass, called the digitizer. It's what you touch, it's the outermost later. It is both protection for the actual screen and the digitizer.
There is an inner layer which is the actual AMOLED screen.
Be clear what what's breaking. Is it broken on the OUTSIDE? Digitizer. Is it NOT broken on the outside but the screen "looks broken", is "bleeding" etc? Screen.
Too much nonsense going back and forth.. Particularly "I dropped it, glass broke, HTC sux" stuff.

It was a joke. I know it sucks for you but a vast majority of N1 owners don't have cracked screen which leads a reasonable person to ask first what the few with broken screens are doing different, if there is an environmental factor (heat change, humidity, etc.) Or in other words what is the common factor.
LoL! Maybe you're butt-uuuggggllllyyyy! LoL! J/K Glad you got a free replacement!

1. You're an idiot.
2. I dropped mine from chest height onto tarmac in a carpark, the top left corner took the brunt of it (was in the sleeve at the time, so bad luck) and it came away with a pretty small nick in the metal housing.
It now lives in a Tough Case.
I just have a quick question to see if anyone else has encountered this issue and if so whether or not B&N fixed it. My NC has just recently had the back coming off right in the corner by volume buttons. It hasn't been dropped nor have I tried to open it. Also it creaks on the middle of the front bezel on the right side. Any ideas if B&N would take care of it under the 12 year manufacturers warranty?
Not sure on what B&N will do. From what I've read, it really boils down to the rep you get on the phone and their 'ability' to help you. If you get someone that simply follows a script... good luck.
As to the quality of the build, my model wasn't very solid from the start. As soon as I held it to read on it for the first time, I felt the back plate clicking and somewhat loose. Not very impressed but as of now, there's been no separation issues.
I had the exact same problem. There was creaking to the left of the "n" button. It almost seems like some of their hardware doesn't fit properly inside the case. Long story short, they exchanged it. Call 'em up. If they tell you to take it into a store don't accept that. I tried, and the guy at the store told me to call. I eventually got a new one.

Or get the name and agent number of the person on the phone who told you to go to the store and when the store says no you can say "Well, so-and-so from 1-800-THE BOOK whose agent ID is blah-blah said to bring it to the store. So first, exchange my Nook and second contact whoever runs your help line and deal with this type of problem with them."
Also, get the managers name as well. People generally don't give you the run around if you get their names...
They definitely do read from a script. The rep had to go check with a supervisor to see if it is covered. Waiting on a reply. I definitely am no accepting no as an answer.

I will have to exactly this. I was getting the run around from the rep on the phone, and she was definitely reading from a script. She was trying to make it seem as if I had someway caused the backing to come off and so it isnt covered. I told her straight up that the problem is that the glue isnt holding it in place and that the problem is at the juncture of the backing and the volume keys, and that since it is the glue that is the problem it should be covered by the manufacturers warranty. SO after 20 minutes of arguing, I am off to my local store to talk to them with the name and ID number of the phone rep. I am getting this fixed one way or another.
I've noticed the same issue since new, but nothing major. I keep my nook in a leather case so i'm only really touching the screen when using it.
(In general, not to OP since don't think he's under 14-day policy anymore)
If you just got your nook, you might want to consider exchanging --- in the week I had my first one, I noticed creakiness and slight flexing all around the right side from when I first opened it, and it only got worse -- started getting little clicks/pops when I shifted my grip on that side and I noticed the white backlight came through a small part of that side, so it looks like it was probably going to end up unhinged. I'm pretty gentle with my electronics and I had it in an Industriell case since day 1, and it still got worse.
The 2nd one I just got is significantly better built, no creaking at all and the bevel is firm and solid (no flex) everywhere. I know it's only $250 but better to avoid future repair hassles and get a good one now.
I was definitely over the 14 day policy as The nook was a Christmas gift from the wife. I ended up going to the store and had them inspect it to make sure that it was definitely a manufacturer issue. The local rep then proceeded to call and try to get it done for me. Now mind you, the stores have an entirely different number to call about Nook Color returns/exchanges. They don't actually deal with the same tech support we do. They were then giving her the run around even with her manager right next to her telling them it is a warranty issue, that it definitely looks like an adhesion issue, no water damage, no drop damage etc. Finally the rep gave up and just did an exchange anyways and said to screw the corporate that once it got sent back it would never be looked at anyways. And this is why i love my local B&N store.
Awesome! Congrats on getting it exchanged The new one, have you noticed if the bevel is darker than your old one? Mine is very noticeably darker, I compare it to the grey of the B&N Industriell case and my old Nook used to be lighter than the case, this new one is several shades darker (almost black). Wonder if they switched materials/updated design somewhere down the line?
Interesting reading, I got my NC back in March, haven't noticed any of these problems. Maybe it was just a bad batch or something. Good luck with getting your NC's exchanged.
Had the same issue, disassembled the nook according to these instructions in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858697
(Note the switch and battery connectors disconnect by pulling them perpendicularly from the board)
Then used Loctite silicone gasket sealant along the edges where the two shell halves meet, between the entire edge of the back cover where it mates, as well as between the screen frame and metal frame. You'll need something to pry with and T5 screw driver. Took 30 minutes
Now feels as sturdy as an iPad, no squeaks or creaks, and in theory I should still be able to pull it apart again if needed.
Hope this helps someone.

The back cover on mine is loose in the same area...but its just fractions of an 1/8".
I don't know if the heat(what heat?) expanded the metal there, but it wasn't 'loose' when I first bought it.
I'm not too concerned, I bought a cheap silicon glove for it and it has not been that noticeable.
It does look a bit darker. I have also noticed that it looks like the bezel is recessed more than on my previous one. This one just feels a lot sturdier than my first one.

I have had my nook color sine april of this year. Its been rock solid with none of the issues described in this thread. Just thought I would add in my own observations.
Bought a N7 two days ago, got home and charged it and it had a defect, not from the factory, but from Walmart. The screen had some damage towards the top like too much pressure had been applied there. It didn't go away and I exchanged it for another. I took that one home and started it up and the LCD panel on it was shattered, not the outer glass. They both had slight screen lift but that didn't bother me as I believe it could be fixed. Also they were both C70's. It's just got me discouraged and pretty mad. Both boxes were damaged somewhat so that's why I think its Walmarts fault. But anyway I'll replace this one this week sometime and report back.

Yeahhhh that definitely sounds like a Wal-Mart issue there... especially considering the damaged boxes and all. Do you have pictures of the boxes? I'm curious as to what condition they were in that they A) thought it was okay to put on the shelf and B) thought they were decent enough to not even warrant opening the box to make sure... unless it's somehow against Wal-Mart policy to open items to verify they're okay? (wouldn't be entirely surprising now that I think about it)
There's not much room to play for the Nexus 7 inside the factory box. They're pretty clean cut with minimal wasted/open space. Any semi decent hits it would take, especially on the top portion, might be substantially detrimental to the tablet itself.
I did 5 exchanges at various Walmarts and they were all C8O's. I was stubborn and looking for one without and screen separation. I gave up on that mission and realize they all gonna be coming with slight screen separation. But I did manage to find 2 with minor issues. I would avoid the C7O build. Only reason being its a older build.

Good luck with #3! It took me 7! (C6,C7,C7,C7,C8,C8, and now C8..you can see how messed up my account page is now LOL) to get one I was happy with, defect free. I've seen it all now, defective batteries, dead pixels, dust under the screen, screen separation on the left. All of mine have been from Gamestop.

Also you might want to give this thread a look, if you ever need to use VIP for an RMA it's actually an "O" as shook wrote it, not a zero :good:

Thanks. I should have a new one Friday. Wow, that really sucks.
Just an update.
Returned my N7 and got another. It's a C80, so far no problems other than minor screen lift. Will update after a few days.
My very late, in rush butt started running without realizing that my phone fell out. I got the phone back from a stranger after multiple attempts to unlock my phone and keep it. Anyways, my friends and I, we came to conclusion that my phone was ran over by a car, face down on the asphalt. Tech21 screen protector on it has multiple holes and dents from the surface of the asphalt. Luckily enough, everything is fine but the screen, of course. It cracked every where. Every tallest bumps of the road left a crack on the screen. I can barely read but actual screen is FINE. THANK GOD!!
SOOO end of story. I ordered repair kit on eBay but I was wondering if anyone went through changing the glass on Note 4 yet? am i the first one?? T.T
Edit: it's my first time replacing the glass but I've dealt with similar stuff before. If anyone would like a video of it, I could try to record it. If I crack my screen, people could cry with me or laugh at me.

If a car ran you phone over I am very sure you have internal damage. Good luck
BAD ASS NOTE 4
Dropped my phone while riding my motorcycle. Glass cracked but the lcd and digitizer works fine. I ordered new glass online and called all the cell phone repair shops in my city. 1 person said that they have done it before so will be taking my phone this weekend to see if it can be fixed.

It would work better if you had the machine to separate the glass from the screen. I will say if the screen is badly cracked up you might have a really low success rate.
why not just buy a whole screen? they are under $200 the last time i checked on ebay. less risk and less headache.
you can even try just the glass after you replace the screen just to do it and if it works you have a back up, if not no loss.
i have a machine and hardly use it cuz how bad people break their screens today, whole screen is the safe bet.
i don't know if its the same in your area but most places charge $100-150 to replace the glass and most places don't reapply new adhesive to the digitizer and glass . so the glass is being held onto the phone by the frame only.

Like your signature says, it's a badass Note 4. I've been handling android phones since MotoDroid and I can guarantee you that there's no internal damage to Note 4. Im still a flashaholic and my phones battery life and performance hasn't been effected at all. Yay me

I agree completely. I dropped the phone on the road while riding and except the top right corner crack on screen there is no damage. Somewhat surprising because i must be atleast 30 mph and the force with which it fell, should have broken into pieces. Not even the back cover came off the phone.
I just finished after 5 hours of job. I'll post pictures when i can with my friends phone. I got b

no update?
My screen cracked while snowboarding and Repairs Universe offers a new glass/digitizer assembly for $189. I contacted Samsung and they offered to repair it for $197.77, so for an additional $8 someone will do it for you. The only downside is you'll be without a phone for about 1.5-2 weeks.
I was worried about the stuff from Repairs Universe being genuine Samsung parts (wanna make sure I get a real 1440p screen and not Chinese knock off crap that's only 720p), so I contacted them. They assured me that it is a genuine Samsung screen, but they could have been lying to me just to get a sale. For that extra $8 I'll get genuine Samsung parts and it'll be getting done properly by someone that know what they're doing.
So for anyone that needs a new screen those are two options for you.

That's good to know, thanks for sharing. Yes, I agree, I'd go directly to Samsung as well, considering price is roughly the same.
Any chance you can share the phone/email of the department at Samsung you contacted? Would be good to have that handy.

I went to their website on my phone, clicked on contact us, and did a live chat with one of their customer service people. It'll ask you to choose which product you're contacting them about (phones, TVs, appliances, etc) then what kind of phone. They'll ask for your IMEI number and all that jazz. I found them to be quite polite and helpful.
The only down side is you'll be without a phone for about 2 weeks, so make sure you have a backup phone to use or prepare yourself for terriblewithdrawal from not having your Note...
Guys the people you want to contact isn't Samsung. It's their only authorized repair service in the United States. The name is RSI found in both Plano and Hurst, Texas. Here's their website: www.repairsvc.com
Dealing with them directly should reduce your wait time.

Yes, that's the price they charge. I was letting everyone know that these are the guys that Samsung uses. They use genuine OEM parts and are the only repair center in the United States authorized to do Samsung repairs. If you look earlier in the thread, someone said that Samsung charges $197.77 with a 1.5-2 week turn around. As you just said yourself, this method would be $5 cheaper and 2x faster than going through Samsung to get the same place to repair your phone. Just was putting it out there if someone wanted 100% assurance that they were getting genuine OEM parts but didn't want to wait 1.5-2 weeks that Samsung quoted them.

Yup same reason I haven't cancelled the tmo 'jump' subscription. You do have to factor in the $10 per month subscription price though, so if you break your phone in 10 months, it's $275.
T-Mobile insurance to replace phone is $175 I just filed a claim on Saturday and got a new phone not refurbished today. The only problem is I had a Note 4 in White but they sent Gray since White was not in stock. I called T-Mobile and complained and got a $30 credit applied to my account so I really just paid $145
