I just received the new Maps 5.0 update with promised features such as 3D view. Well, we got 3D viewing, but where are all the 3D buildings that I saw screenshots of???
Right now only 100 cities are supported with 3D viewing around the world. Mine's working fine because I live in L.A.
So...if a program is installed with the ROM, i.e. in the ROM package such as google maps with cyanogenmod then, to update to the latest version of said app would you have to created a flashable zip to overwrite the existing apk?
Edit: definitely disregard my market just hadn't updated cuz I was in a ****ty reception spot lol

How is it working?? I went to LA and no 3D buildings are shown. Do you view Terrain? Satellite? I'm confused as to why it's not working.
I've tried LA, Chicago, New York, none work.

did you zoom in? you have to go to like the most zoom possible.
I live in Philadelphia and the 3d buildings end two blocks from our house

Yep, I zoomed in. Someone give me a friggin address I can go right to and see it.
I'm seeing the 3d buildings but i cant tilt.
I typed in Philadelphia, PA... went right to where it took me by default.. no 3d buildings all the way zoomed in on Terrain or Satellite layers.. nada zip...
Ok WOW i got it working.. I didnt know I could turn the layers off completely.. It only works when no layers are turned on at all!
I turned all of my layers off, searched for LA, zoomed in (layers still off) and still no tilt
you used both two fingers then, drag down. that would tilt the map.
I did, still nothing :/
Im not getting any tilt or rotate with gmm 5.0 either. Also I dont think I'm getting the vector graphics, because when I zoom in and out I still get the pixelated, blurry blocks like I always have. Maybe because I'm still running 2.1?
3D buildings are also not working for my Droid X. I am running stock build 2.2 Froyo rooted. I have no roms or themes. I've tried it with all layers off, searching LA and also Vancouver BC. Just tried San Francisco's Mission St. all the way zoomed with GPS on and no layers, still nothing.
I am so utterly confused as to why this is working for some people and not others. Only thing I can think of is that it is server side, since it appears to be completely at random which phones will work and which ones will not.
*Edit, just went back to the phone and tried again. This time it worked for the first time. All I did was tild the view level with two fingers swiping downward, then zoomed in level by level using the +/_ on screen buttons until 3D showed up. Sweet!
Make sure all layers are turned off. Go to Philadelphia, PA or maybe even New York, NY or possibly Chicago, IL. Zoom all the way in at first and wait a few seconds for it to all load. Take both fingers (seperated by about 0.25" from each other) and drag down on the screen or up on the screen depending on the tilt action. It doesn't tilt much, but some.
The only thing I cannot get working is the rotation. I don't think the screen recognizes it correctly perhaps?
Anywho, it's a nifty feature for someone who walks around the city a lot! Or, just for the eyecandy factor?
Hi guys, i cant find google maps 5 in the market. The version i am running is still 4.5. I am also on liberated fr8.
Please advice how i can get the latest update. Thanks!

Go to NYC, Manhattan to test the 3D buildings.
Note that 3D view kicks in only at a certain level of detail. Just keep zooming it. For me, both 3D and tilting works fine -- running Froyo Liberated FR0008 Stable Release.
If it's not working, please post details about your setup. Which OS?
It's working for me - CM6.1 Stable (android 2.2)

If you can see the 3d buildings, then you obviously have google maps 5.0, this video demonstrates how to correctly do everything, including the 3d tilt.

People will dissagree with me, but my advice - don't root it right away.
Play with it, see if everything works, see if you like how the phone feels..
Honestly, official 2.2 update will give you everything you need, including tethering, JIT, even N1 Torch (flaashlight) works with non-rooted N1 now.
Grats and enjoy =)
I'm buying a rooted one already lol. I come from windows mobile so I have some new things to learn. It rooting similar to HSPL like in WinMo then flashing custom roms? (or for easier understanding something like jailbreaking an iPhone?)
Or... Get a Rooted one and a Non Rooted one.
Unfortunately my non-rooted one is still on EPE54B, can't wait to get it on Froyo too.

wait. wait for the next badass android phone from htc/google. the n1 has 3g connectivity issues, no video out, and 720p recording still does not work on froyo.
as soon as a reliable htc/google phone is released with 720p, video out, 3g that WORKS, and a keyboard, i'll buy it.
i really enjoy my n1 now, but miss the g1's keyboard terribly. the 3g issues with the n1 are rediculous. 100% signal one minute, then nothing for 5 minutes.... airplane mode then back to non-airplane, and maybe it works again. utter crap.
i'll sell mine, without a look back.

I bought a used one on Craigslist. I've nice replaced the battery/phone through HTC from a few errors that came from rough treatment w/ the previous owner. The phone itself is incredible. Forget what the user above says about connectivity, mine works great, and google still puts everything out for this phone. it'll blow your mind and you're the first to get every update. Enjoy.

There enough apps out there to keep you busy for at-least a month. If you run out of space remove your least used apps. (until you upgrade to a ROM that supports apps2sdext)
OK so I got it today. It's awesome. I'm coming from the HD2 and I actually like the smaller size. The HD2 was way too big. Pretty snappy, butI expected that with the Snapdragon, since the HD2 had it too. Can you recommend some apps? Already got the XDA app .

can anyone else confirm this? i am on Android Revolution HD 1.9.2
it works on modaco custom
Works here, you have to use zoom in a lot in supported cities and you'll see buildings popping out. You can alo tilt the map to have a better view. I still can't believe they have 3D buildings in Melbourne and Tasmania, but not Sydney.
Where can I get this update? Because I am trying on my Desire HD routed Android Revolution 1.9.2. But still no update?

I hope we can get this app working. Besides being a fun app it would make a great showpiece for our GTabs. It only seems to show up in the market when using the later VEGAn ROMs. I have started corresponding with X-Plane support to see if we can get this working.
Has anyone else tried X-Plane on their GTab or phones?
Received another reply from X-Plane support:
"The Viewsonic gTab uses a Tegra2 chip that we don't support yet. Most games will have to make a special effort to add support. We do plan on doing this at some point. This is why Google has not added market support yet for tablets."
FYI I pulled the apk from my N1 and installed it on the gTab and it doesn't get past the splash screen.

I'm running TnT 3.1.0 with supplement and you got farther than I did. Mine closes as soon as it opens, like slingplayer did but multiple attempts at opening does not work like slingplayer does.
Good news everyone!
X-plane has been updated to support Tegra2 and it shows up on the market. It does a good job of illustrating the crappy viewing angles on the gtablet screen when tilting forward and back

Viewing angles, how unfortunate.
Okay so if you go to the Telenav OTA site at ota.telenav.com/tn and click T-Mobile as your carrier, then click the Vibrant 4G, it is completely compatible with the Captivate. Basic navigation is now free (including voice navigation, automatic re-routing, etc) and the full premium navigation (which includes SPEED TRAPS among traffic and all sorts of other things) is only $2.99 a month - MUCH better than paying at&t $9.99 a month and this app is much better than the stock at&t Navigator app and worlds better than Google Navigation, which quite often thinks you aren't on the right road when you're dealing with a highly populated area with lots of roads.
Also, unlike Google Nav, TeleNav will continue to work without a tower signal, it will just tell you to turn without the street name. I know this from experience when I drove from Colorado to Arizona and was driving through Hatch, NM and had no signal from Sprint or any roaming partner and still got navigation directions.
Just thought I'd post this up here. I decided to check out the OTA site and see what's up.
Also, if you download it directly from the device, it will tell you it can't recognize your device and you just hit Samsung, then Vibrant 4G.
I do not know if this works on non T-Mobile ROMs but I don't see why it wouldn't. Let me know what you guys think.
Nice find. Thank you.
Awesome find. Thank you for sharing. Will log in tomorrow from pc to vote this up and a thank you.

It crashed (the entire phone) on the initial run, but I have not had problems since then.
Thanks!
Thanks for the tip. Loaded as you recommended. Curious why not identify as att?
Just checked tele nav's maps almost instant lock pinpoint on house went into google maps no lock after 30 seconds. In the nav mode also almost instant lock and immediate directions.... Will check in morning see how tracking works. Can only hope. If it works as well as the locks will have a usable gps finally.

Glad everyone is loving it! It appears that this version is ONLY for the Vibrant 4G so its kick ass that it works on our phones. I used it for navigation today because I got so pissed with Google Navigation always thinking I'm on a street that I'm not and it was FLAWLESS the entire route.
I may very well may the 2.99 a month - sure beats 9.99 a month and the lane assistance is helpful when you're traveling somewhere you haven't been before. Nothing worse than being in the wrong exit lane and ending up either almost getting in an accident changing lanes at the last minute or ending up going the wrong way and finding 5 street lights with no U-turns and ending up 15 minutes out of your way before you can turn around.
By the way, I'm running this on Firefly, which already has amazing GPS, and Google Navigation still can't track me anywhere near as well as TeleNav. On top of that, the screen can be set to be off unless you're at a turn - massive battery saver over Google Nav.
Hooray for a GPS program that works...stupid google maps...
Yeah I was trying to remember the OTA address for TN and when I was typing it in the browser, Google auto-filled the /tn for me and I figured the Vibrant 4G is pretty much a Galaxy S with HSPA+ 21Mbps, tried it, and it works fantastic.
Hehe us Captivate users should pressure the company to releasing one for the Captivate. Then again big brother AT&T might not allow them.
-Edit, tried to poke around the choices on the captivate and one link took me to the Market. Drum Roll, and displayed ATT Navigator.
Yeah, at&t navigator sucks ass compared to this version. Plus its a 6 dollar a month difference in cost or you can use it for free...
PERFECT! Also running on Firefly, locks in seconds!! Great find

Wow finally got a nav system that actually knows where i am. while all the gps fixes out there helped alot it actually seems to be a issue with google maps/nav. only thing i liked about google maps was the ability to have the map in the direction i was going . Methinks that a working nav/maps is better
once again Thanks for the info

Yea, I found it a bit funny bc the description says its not compatible with tablets, yet Amazon website has a green compatible check mark next to the Xoom. Sow sadly it does start on a black screen on the xoom like its not going to work but if u keep taping the screen and tring to move stuff to the screen it will work.
I just loaded the app and it started. What kernel are you using? Are you on OC GPU? I don't like that OC stuff so I'm stock. I'm up to level 40 and it hasn't sputtered or crashed (knock on morning wood).

It seems to work for me.. the 'not for tablets' is probably because it isn't optimized as well as you have to scroll the screen a little bit up/down to see the top are of the screen for putting towers etc and down to put them on the lowest part of the playing field. Otherwise.. seems to work great for me.
I get an Unauthorized Request error when I start it up. I click OK and it closes .

I'm using a custom kernel. Try going to the dev section and looking in the Notubuntu thread. Flash that kernel and try it. Maybe its kernel related. Mines works fine everytime. I'm on wave 70 and no hiccups.

For me the trick is to do a two finger re-size on the black background, this causes the play field to be redrawn and works great.
Anyone have this issue? See the small text?
Man this game is harder than it looks. How the hell do I stop the helicopters from getting past? I feel like I'm upgrading the early buildings and its killing me!
I noticed that when my game ended and my name was on my high score list. I could not read the list. Either the text was microscopic or was not working correctly.

Early on drop a middle launcher along the aircraft flight path, then lightning generators later in the round.
I have the same "small text" issue with the high scores screen - this is probably the reason this game isn't "approved" for tablets.
