i got a bell i9000m ugjk4 froyo... now how do i know what roms will work on my phone without messin it up... like what exactly does the ugjk4 mean? can i put different ones on my phone? sorry im a newb at this lol
Hey,
That "ugjk4" is the current firmware version that your are using.
The Bell i9000m is compatible with most roms for the i9000 international and its compatibility (or incompatibility for that matter) is usually discussed in the first post that details the information about the rom.
If you every do flash a rom that is incompatible go to "samfirmwares" and download UGJK4 from their site and reflash through odin.
Let me know if I did not answer your question as you were a little vague.
Happy Modding,
Alex

He isnt talking about flashing modem or CSC?
Also, you will notice I told him to look at the OP for the ROM he is interested in BEFORE he flashes for compatibility issues. I did not say that every ROM will work ok.

I understand what you're saying and have some questions if you don't mind. I've been wracking my brain over searches but haven't come across anything that lays it out clearly.
By way of example, I'm running JPU on my i9000M which changed my product code to "Nordic" and my csc/modem accordingly (which is what I'd expect given that JPU isn't a Canadian firmware). I've since flashed a Canadian modem, changed my product code back to BMC (Bell Canada) and enabled the 850 band. Are there any other changes to be concerned with/aware of given the mixing of pda/phone/csc?
Many thanks in advance.

How do I check what modem my Captivate is running? I'm pretty new to the Android community so I don't really know much outside of how to install roms.
Go to settings, then scroll down to "about phone", then find the baseband...it's the last three characters...ie: JL4

No, it's not best to update to the latest version. Different modems work best in different locations.

And using a Modem for another device in the line(Vibrant, i9000, 850mhz i9000, Nexus S, etc...) can be beneficial as well. The i896 Modem have both the Audience Chip and HSUPA, but nobody made a kernel that supported it, so it died out. The modem that came with Cyanogenmod is JL6 I'm pretty sure, which came from a 850mhz i9000, but branded Vibrant(T959)

Has no one got anything on SM-S260DL, this device is great and can really use some support. Please anyone if your able to create a CF Auto Root for SM-S260DL that would be great. I don't understand why I can't find anything for this phone, is there an easy way to network unlock SM-S260DL as well? Any info would be great please guys, I have the stock firmware in case anything goes wrong.
Hi im on samsung Galaxy S vibrant from Bell.
Im sitll running 2.1 as no update has come through Kies for me for 2.2
I am using Kies 2.##.
My current firmware version is: PDA:JM2 / PHONE:JM1 / CSC:JM1 (BMC)
If you are impatient you could download JL2 (latest official Bell upgrade) and flash with Odin.
Otherwise...make sure you have latest version of Kies, etc...never used Kies myself so I can't help you troubleshoot that a whole lot
or bite the bullet and root the phone, use some custom ROMs
It's a little scary at first, but well documented and safe/stable nowadays
Lots of good options like Darky's, Ultimate etc. I've recently been playing with Doc&Stef's RomKitchen which is stable and well documented

Could be that you are not using a Bell ROM. JM1/2 is a European ROM. The Bell 2.1 roms were jg2 and jh2. When you boot the device does it flash a screen with "GT-I9000M "?

I want to upgrade this to 2.3 gingerbread !!
Also It doesn't seem like my froyo has GPS working it can't seem to work
would it work if i upgrade it to 2.3 gingerbread?
I know how to perform upgrade using odin and adb

Oh the irony is just bloody astounding. I'm saddened that a fellow Canadian has such bad English skills.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596
well i read this and i know what is what
but i just dont know which package to install
there are so many out there
and i heard something about gingerbread not supporting 850hz something... for 3g network..which is what rogers/fido use ?
One if you don't understand stay clear of upgrading until you do .
Gingerbread is not released yet its Beta .
First page has a Bell post might be worth understanding what specifics you need for North American continent first .
I dont know if their are any NA specifics but i would customise via rom kitchen .

A simple way to get 2.3 is go into Google and search Darkys rom and follow the guide exactly!!! It worked flawlessly on my bell i9000m...

What do you mean with ends in JVQ? JVP is older than JVQ you know that!? And JVR is the newer one.. You have flashed JVQ to your phone, why wont you flash JVR to it.. same processes!?
There are good flash tutorials in this forums!

Like I said, although I have owned other smartphones, The Galaxy S is different when it comes to flashing, the JVQ is the when you look at the baseband (in settings/about phone) thingy or do the *# code, the phone, pda and csc end in JVQ, i wanted to know if I can flash a rom which has JVR or JVP at the end, as there is more great roms, i didnt know if it was phone/country specific, or whether it will brick my phone, thanks to anyone who helps me!

Flash whatever rom you want.. as long as it is for an i-9000... and if you get no service flash a modem that works for you.

Alright, I am just trying to find out where to start. Like what's the difference in bootloaders, roms, etc. Is a ROM a Kernal? Stuff like that.
I want to basically like take this Captivate back to stock and start from there, problem is, I have no idea how to get there.
On bootup it currently has the Galaxy S screen with a Cyanogenmod so I guessing it is running that.
Pertinent info:
Model: SGH-I897 - AT&T
Android Version: 4.0.1
Kernal: 2.6.35.14-g76142d0
Mod Version: IceCreamHackish-11282011-Captivate
Build Number: ITL41D
Baseband Version: I9000UGJK4 - This doesn't seem right to me (think there might be a problem with the SIM board but not sure)
Recovery/Download Mode brings up CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.2
Any help/guidance would be appreciated.
A ROM is basically all the things that you see on screen that's part of the system, i.e. the user interface and menus and such. The kernel is essentially the software interface to the hardware, and controls the core OS functions. A ROM is going to come with a kernel because nothing can work without one, however they are not the same thing. Nothing is wrong with your baseband, as being on a CM based ROM requires an i9000 modem in order to work properly.

I didn't think these had i9000 modems. :/
They use i9000 based Kernels because they're ported from the i9000 itself.
^if that statement is wrong someone correct me, I'm merely stupid to some things
That being said, anyone that can help me get this thing back to the original software?
Read all the stickies on how to use ODIN, download mode, CWM and what a JIG is. Using ODIN can make your captivate a brick so I suggest you read alot and understand it.

I have Odin, I know about download mode and the jig as well. I have read the stickies, the problem is that most of them are not very thorough. I am kinda stuck at what I can/can't put on the phone. What is the difference between the Rogers Stocks that are available? Will they work on my phone? Questions like that are the ones that I kinda need help with that I cannot find answers for.
Why do you want to go to Rogers stock if you are on AT&T?

i wonder if all those I897's in front of the rom version would indicate they are stock for AT&T?
oh crap, look at that...post number 4 takes you to just the rogers ones...

Sarcasm how nice. I wasn't looking for Rogers in particular but if you are going to be picky, I would rather not assume that just because someone put i897 infront of it that it is 100% for AT&T. If you choose to do so, that's your perrogative.

Yeah you can't trust those jerks that post up the stock roms. Stupid model numbers.
If I choose to do so? Lmao. OK. Why don't you just go download the stuff yourself and see? Lazy people these days looking for.handouts I see. I didn't just assume, I have actually used them. Funny enough so have lots of others in the threads. But nope don't take their words for it they are probably lying just so you would do something stupid.
