[REQ] Show H when connected to HSDPA - Nexus S Themes and Apps

I'd like to know whether I'm on UMTS or HSDPA generally... How would you go about doing this? I know when I ran the Galaxy S i9000 ROMs on my Vibrant, it would show the H if I was on HSDPA, seemed useful enough for me.

If you go to settings, about phone, status.. it will tell you what you are connected to currently... there is also a connectivity widget also but I'm not sure what its called..
Sent from my T-Mobile G1 using XDA App

I'm sure when custom roms are being pushed out the H will show, but I miss it as well.

I know this, just trying to avoid having to go there to find out. It'll give me an idea of whether I'm gonna get 3.6mbps or 7mbps so...

i hate to break this everybody but the Nexus S does not support HSPA+ which is what TMO's new network is. it does support HSDPA 7.2Mbps and HSUPA at 5.6Mbps. this is no good for t-mobile users.

Did I say HSPA+ anywhere -_-. Either way, HSPA+ benefits even HSDPA phones. The only thing that makes the G2 or MyTouch 4G "more 4G" is that they are capped at 14.4mbps (hardware) instead of the 7.2.

It connects to HSDPA and UMTS. As does Vibrant... and almost every T-Mobile phone

do your research dude. this is not the vibrant

Then how am I getting 5+mbps sometimes? UMTS maxes out at 3.6.
Not to mention the specs
Tri-band HSPA: 900, 2100, 1700
HSPA type: HSDPA (7.2Mbps) HSUPA (5.76Mbps)
Why would it be on the spec list and not be on the phone? HSDPA is a standard for T-Mobile phones. It doesn't do HSPA+ which is up to 14.4mbps... I'm pretty sure I saw HSDPA in the settings as well I'll check again next time I'm getting 5mbps down

European Galaxy S in Canada ?

Hi there,
I bought a Galaxy S in France, (model GT-I9000) and I'm moving to Canada (Montreal). It's SIM unlocked but does anyone know if I'll be able to get 3G here, and if so with which mobile phone providers ? I guess there are slight differences between European and Canadian models of Galaxy S in 3G frequencies...
Also if anyone has got an idea about what's the best provider here in Montreal for this android phone, i'm planning to put between 70 and 90$ /month including taxes.
Thanks in advance !
Bell And Telus uses 850 and 1900, Videotron uses the other band, not sure about the other carriers
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
You will not be able to get 3G in Canada...only EDGE which is 2G data. Phone part will work...just no 3G or 3g+..only 2G.
Are you sure ? I just went to a bell store to try a sim there and the phone was showing hsdpa icon...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
If you have thehsdpa icon then you are good, you might have issues some places if you dint have the 850 band but around town you should have the 1900 band pretty much everywhere. Since most ROM for this phone come with the 1900 band you should be good.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
You will have limited HSDPA coverage with Bell/Telus/Rogers on the 1900 MHz band. Mostly in the cities. In rural areas, they tend to use 850 MHz instead, which your phone doesn't support. If you are with Rogers/Fido, your phone would fall back to GSM/EDGE, but not with Telus/Bell.
But you get no warranty, as any of these company could turn off any of their 1900 MHz tower any day and replace it with a 850 MHz one. That's why all their phones support both frequencies.
With Videotron, you would have no HSDPA at all and always roam on Rogers' EDGE network (Videotron have an agreement with Rogers). So I would avoid this.
You can always check this map:
http://www.ertyu.org/steven_nikkel/cancellsites.html
I don't know if it is reliable but maybe you can see which towers are 850 MHz.
By looking at this map, Bell seems to be 1900 MHz only in Montreal. However if you plan to travel outside of Montreal a bit, Rogers/Fido might be your best bet.
Also remember that Rogers=Fido, Bell=Virgin Mobile and Telus=Koodo
Here is a map of Telus's 3G coverage for the Montreal/Toronto corridor.

yeah but it doesn't tell you if it is 850 or 1900 MHz (or both)
can't you just flash the modem from JL2 and run on 850hz or it's hardware limited?
My friend is a engineer at BELL who helped design the new HSPA+ system...he told me first it connects at 1900 and then pushes you to 850 for data. 1900 will work at times but only in certain area and if the load is low on it. Basically 99% get pushed to 850.
I have tried only 1900 many times...it works but very slow..EDGE slow speed. So yes like I said...but you will be getting edge speed...do a speed test and you will see. Icon's dont mean anything!
I went with Virgin Mobile and so far it's working like a charm. I'm getting hsdpa and a speedtest showed 4.5Mb in dl and 400kbps in upload
I've been using the phone for one day around Montréal and i always had hsdpa coverage. I'll see if I'm not getting network sometimes but since I'm gonna stay a lot in Montréal I feel it's really what I needed.
Many Thanks for your answers, that was really helpful

It takes equal amounts of data, H just does it faster. And speeds depends on your modem, and the service where you live.

If I'm correct, it's showing the cell tower icons in the picture next to the recorded speeds, so he is receiving those speeds on HSDPA/HSUPA. Great download speeds, I average between 3-4mb/s. a little faster than 3g, i heard. at&t is rolling out HSPA + and call it 4g but the real 4g is coming later this year with LTE
LTE is not 4G.
4G is any technology that supports 100M connections.
LTE HSPA+ WIMAX are still in the 3G umbrella.

"4G" Speeds

With the release of ATT's actual 4G speeds this Sunday, does anyone know if our HSDPA speeds will get any faster?
What exactly are you referring to?
lte=4g we will not see any benefit fro its implementation ....it requires an lte radio
Or is your area (or all for that matter) getting true hspa+ (not really 4g but faster than plain old 3g) ?
if that switch hasnt been turned on for your area and they are turning it on then yes....you could see an increase in data speeds.

I think what he means is will LTE turning on alleviate some of the stress on the flipped on markets HSPA networks, or maybe the backhaul has been approved in these markets.
I can speculate that no there won't be an immediate improvement. First, there are simply not enough LTE devices and users that would hop on the new network leaving the HSPA network to make an impact, not yet anyways. Second, I really really hope AT&T is not using the same backhaul on both networks, so the HSPA backhaul probably won't improve much in these markets.
But hey, what do I know.

I thought the same....relief idea....but the only lte devices in market right now are hot spot (only 2)
No phones...and we wont see any until the celox and holiday are released in q4
Even then lte is only active in a few markets right now.
There are however quite a few markets that dont have the backhaul thingy turned on yet....so if that is what he talkung about sure....he could see an increase.
Here in dallas it has yet to be on full time. sometimes its active (and insanely fast) others it isnt (but still faster than tmo and sprint)

lol..an average of 3 is about what most people get.
It cracks me up when people refer to that as slow (I jumped ship from Sprint 2 months ago...we were lucky to get 1 mbps down)
But yeah...those speeds may indicate that they haven't switched it on for you yet...it's the same here in Dallas.. unless you are up late or out in the middle of nowhere.
I'm lucky enough to have a backhauled tower right by my house and I pull a average of 8mbps when at home.

If you're up for the challenge, the latest update of the Thrilled ROM fixes the speed setting that AT&T has on the phone. My download speed doubled from ~3 to ~6 mbps.
I Also increased speeds after the thrill rom installation. ATT has the build.prop tweaked for lower speeds. The thrill ROM addresses that.
As far as the LTE rollout for ATT, they don't even have ANY Lte phones out yet. I asked at the store last week when I got the thrill. Supposedly they will have around 20 4g and LTE phones by the end of the year. I don't know if that is nationwide...but it is the story I got here in Orlando Florida.

I have had it on LTE/GSM/CDMA AUTO now for a good few hours. I used bittorrent client for android to download a 720p film from yify torrents site. Same file so was the same 829mb size for both downloads.
On normal network ( wcdma ) I had a average DL speed of 1,2mbps
But on the LTE selected band I had not a huge jump increase it wa averaged at 1.4mbps so there is n obvious speed increase but that could be for a different reason. I will go head and use apeedtest.net and post results after.

Even, if there is an option called "LTE/GSM/CDMA", our phone cannot switch to LTE
Our phone is not LTE capable and never will be

Piskor look at gsmareana at nexus 4 it says no LTE BUT nexus 4 DOES have LTE thanks to a hybrid modem so them websites mean nothing
Not to ruin you day Lol but the nexus 4 was said to never get LTE either but it has got it thanks to great developers. I might take my phone apart and take a closer look at the hardware components. Also if that was true why is my phone able to select the LTE band and not only that it stays on that LTE band even if I reboot. So it recognises that the user selected the LTE band and it changed to it also I just found out o2 does not use 4g so I will try again with my contract EE sim and check again and give another update

Try to choose "LTE only" and you will see, what will happen Nothing Menu returns to "WCDMA preffered" (in my case)
Nexus 4 is completely different thing. There must be flashed the hacked modem, there must be set different APN
And something about your speed result http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/744650636
It's nothing special. You obtained only 6.59Mb/s / 2.33Mb/s but our phone on 3G is capable to operate with HSDPA 14.4 Mbps and HSUPA 5.76 Mbps
<EOT>
The NovaThor U8500 system-on-a-chip on S3 Mini doesn't have LTE support so it's impossible for LTE to function on our devices

Looking for app that shows me Band/Pairing #

I know Samsung devices have this and I believe iphones.. not sure.. I dont use iphones...
Unfortuneately, our devices doesnt show this or at least I can not get into this mode... Is there an app that can show us this...

I must be blind.. but where does it show the Band and pairing BW?
If you refer to my post, my point was only that there's a little app that shows the Android service menu. The band is indicated (mine says HSPA - my contract doesn't allow LTE, so I can't say anything about that).

that app your referring to is the same menu as going into *#*#4636#*#*
also, HSPA, LTE, GSM, etc is not the band type, its a network type.. by Band type I mean LTE: Bands: 1/3/4/7/17/38/40, which is also another way to describe radio frequency
as you can see in the first pic of my first post, in the Samsung device, it shows Band 4
but my question was for mindblizzard,
I don't think the phone can show that information
Sent from my OnePlusOne
which is why Iam asking around to see if theres an app that can...

I would assume to see if the band unlock mod works for other frequencies?
I will see if band 20 is unlocked in few weeks once i get my 4g/LTE data package.

That's all fine and dandy, but it's not like your carrier is operating multiple frequencies that you're likely to see ever. Maybe if you live in an incredibly dense population center, but even then... Perhaps I'm missing something.

Im just curious to see what Band/DL Bandwidth my carrier is using... Our area is suppose to be upgraded to a new LTE network using a new band and what not...

Fair enough, if you have LTE already, and they are simply deploying a new frequency, you likely won't notice any change, to any of the service. Speeds don't increase between bands, the only reason a carrier deploys a new band, is to fight radio interference from other carriers. Given the cost of a single radio, carriers generally only deploy these new radios in VERY congested areas. Meaning, that in a city that has, say 15 towers, 2-3 of them would actually get the upgrade, in the area that suffers from the most interference. (You have to bear in mind, that a full tower build, requires 6 radios, each radio costing about $18,000 for the radio, another $1000 for the antenna, another $500-1500 for the power supply and cabling. They don't just "upgrade" an entire area, it takes too long to recoup costs)

Ah my mistake, i had in my head he meant to check for bands in the area which he can use with the 'unlocked' frequency mod..for some reason. My total mistake!
However what i meant with what i said when i get my 4g is that i can confirm that the unlock mod will enable band 20 since our OPO is restricted/doesnt support it by default. The band app would be good though!
