First time Rooter! - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have froyo 2.2 UK version but can't get into download/recover mode via the 3 button mode.
Does this make rooting risky for me??
Only want to root my phone as easy as possible to install the lagfix as the phone is so damn slow!!
How can i go about it?? Was going to use that z4root thing but hasn't it been taken off the market?? thanks

Dont flash anything before you get download mode working.
Saves you alot of trouble in the future when you need it for some reason.
Better be save then sorru

is there an easy way to do it? as i say i'm totally confused by all of this so the thread i saw about fixing your 3 button combination to downlaod mode just really confused me!

Hey mate,
At the top of the forum page, there are 3 sticky posts, one of them talks about the 3br modes not working and what to do.
Have fun,

Revert Back to stock

OK guys, I own a Heroc and spend all my time over in that area of XDA and the IRC.. BUt i have quick question about a friends Samsung Captivate... He is running a custom rom and is wanting to unroot and go completely back to stock.. Can you lead me in the right direction please..
Edit*** the reason he is wanting to go back is because GPS is not working...
Here ya go...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
i noticed alot of people on there are saying this dont work or there are major issues and complications.. you have to forgive me.. I run a hero and going back stock is a simple as running the RUU and i dont have to do a thing but watch the progress and waalaa its done..
BUMP... OK the reason for this is because GPS and camera are not working.. He is running cognition2.6 or something like that... i figure its a kernel problem but your guys could tell me more...
I've screwed up using odin several times but it was always user error. What your friend needs to do is follow the instructions exactly step-by-step and they'll be fine.

Going back to stock isn't going to make gps any better. Best to flash jm9 fix, should work with any rom.

Don't know why your friend's captivate has no functional camera when he is on cognition. Make him flash the latest cog? Like the person above, GPS is as good as crap on stock as well. Do jm9 fix and see if that fixes it. If you need the jm9 file, PM and I will send you the flashable zip file.
Also if he wants to go back to stock, ODIN is pretty simple too. Open up ODIN, go to download mode (from cog I think there is a reboot to download option. If not just shut down the phone, press both vol up+down and hold them and plug in USB cable.) Once ODIN says "added!", press start, and just let it be. Your friend's phone should be back to stock in just a few minutes.
EDIT: Also tell your friend to read more. It's way better to do stuff knowing what you're doing
I don't have any issues with my vibrants GPS. I got the OTA and wallah no more sh-tty GPS. I use it everyday for work. Now I just need to do RyanZa's OCFL and I'm good.

[Q] Please help a NOOB!

I am obviously a NOOB. I am reading previous posts, but this is way more complicated than I expected.
I just want to get any factory firmware on my Captivate so that I can sell it. Right now I can't enter Download mode or Recovery mode via button combinations. I have tried for hours now.
Are there any simple directions that actually give links to what I need to download. ie...What Odin Files, etc.
Please help!
Here's the ODIN 1-click
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
And please post in the RIGHT section this is for development only.
Thanks

And if your Captivate boots, you don't need button combinations to enter download mode. You need to download the SDK, put the Captivate in a USB debug mode, and then do "adb reboot download" to get there.
NOOB.
adb cmd???

Why don't you just do a factory reset and delete your files from the phone ?
If your unable to just go in download mode and use the Odin one-click then you clearly need to spend more time reading. This is also a big red flag that you could turn your phone (effortlessly) into a brick.
Your choices are:
A) Read up, learn and invest time in it (not just 30min and a simple how-to then jump the guns with it)
B) Just delete your stuff, do a factory reset and sell it like it is.
A more tech savvy user will mod it to its liking. Why do the job for them if your not confortable doing it in the first place? It's not like your going to use it again, your selling it.
Yup I agree - if you already have a Stock phone - don't screw with it. Just do the factory reset which will wipe the phone back to stock anyways - and if you want to go that extra step you could format the internal SDCard from within the phone menu.
If it aint broke - don't play with it! (Well my real motto is If it ain't broke tweak it! but.. for you it doesn't apply)
I don't necessarily WANT to sell it. I want to give it a fair chance. I am used to an iPhone but I wanted to see what all the talk about the androids is about. I heard that this is all SO simple. Maybe so for some. I am just spoiled by the user friendliness of apple i guess.
Anyway, i haven't given up completely. I am gonna try all this again. I just don't have Hours upon Hours to define all the stuff that I'm reading. I am just surprised how difficult it is to make this thing anywhere near the same level as an iPhone. I'm sure it's easy for most. Maybe I'll figure it out....
Jumping in the conversation since we are on the subject. I rooted with z4root and flashed with rom manager. If I want to go back to stock will odin 1click work?

It's not that hard but yes your spoiled . It's not like going to a website and bingo it's done like the jailbraiking on iphone. You actually do the commands manually and learn something in the process.
You also need the corresponding tools to do the job (Google SDK for ADB, Odin for flashing, etc..). You don't build a house only by looking at the blue prints you have to put some work into it
Check out my ODIN video it should walk you through this very easily.

[Q] (Q) Going from 2.2 froyo to 2.1 stock on Captivate?

I currently have the Froyo 2.2 I897UCKB1 on my Samsung captivate. I'm trying to go back to stock in order to have Serendipity 6.2...
I've read everywhere and searched everything I could...It seems ATT updated froyo so I can do anything with update.zip or go into downloading mode, just recovery mode...
Can anyone solve my problem... I have rooted it and unlocked Non market apps on it...
Oh yes, I used Kies in order to update to 2.2
Odin oneclick,if your build numb get is 1009, , out l lower. Otherwise, use regular odin. Plenty of articles here on how to do it. Next time, please use search before starting a new thread.
MOD S, PLEASE CLOSE THREAD

you dont need to go to 2.1 stock. just any stock.
hell i dont even bother going to stock between rom.
almost all the roms WIPE your phone before install anyway.... so stock goes bye bye,,,
You must not have searched too hard because this has been answered at least a dozen times. Newbie FAIL.
With him on 2.2, 3e would cause a few extra steps before he actually got a new rom flashed, right?

Sorry to bump, but the search button IS back.

I've followed every instruction to the T. My phone will not go into downloading mode, just recovery mode... computer freezes on every odin start...
Instead of calling me a noob or a newbie you could try directing me to the right information and stop acting like you got a golden spoon up your MOD EDIT.

[Q] Getting back to GB from ICS

Hey everyone!
I am running an ICS rom and was wanting to go back to GB. I don't have a nandroid(I know, I know. Would have made things easier), but I haven't done anything to attempt to get back yet. I've been reading and, so far, haven't found anything similar to my issue, but I think I've figured it out. Just checking, as I understand it there are different partitions, which means having to flash something(sorry I'm kinda noob at this) like odin or heidmal. Then flash GB rom? if this isn't right then please let me know, also if there are/is a link describing this already I would be very appreciative for the link to it. You guys are great and thanks for any help I get with my noobness.
Search please, there are already 2 guides and one user thread for this...

Thanks, sorry. :/
Get the i897uckk4 Odin One Click - Stock installer, run it with Admin privileges, put the Captivate into download mode (hold both Volume buttons and plug it into the USB cable already attached to the 'puter), when it's detected by Odin click Start and wait.
That's about it.

please help :(

No need to open a new thread each day with the same problem.
In your other thread from yesterday you wrote that odin stopped at factoryfs.img.
And as a member wrote you bricked your device.
So two options:
a) replace motherboard for complete repair
b) use the workaround with repartition (and excluding damaged sectors) - use the search here for the detailed explanations how to do this.
If you repartition, be warned you'll lose up to 3gb of space and it's likely you won't be able to run stock roms anymore, only cm based or aokp as they're smaller.

As this member wrote in another thread (search above in my first answer) he bricked his device. So the "right" button combo isn't of any use here
There is no "miracle" fix.

Learned something new about the button combos
Didnt know they would change under certain conditions. Thought they would stay the same. Funny it workes that way. Never read it before. Pretty easy mistake to make on my behalve, I read his combos and really thought he was doing it wrong. Sorry, I then had it wrong. My bad.
