This thread should get you started
Don't worry, I was in your shoes a week ago. The people on this forum are generally helpful.
Here's a post explaining the quick and easy way once you're rooted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8729937&postcount=929
I'd recommend either Cognition 2.2 beta 7 or Shep's 10-20-2010 ROM. Either one is fantastic.
Please read the forum for how to flash your phone with Odin or via Rom Manager. Also, since you are new to the forum make sure you use the search function and read about your question before creating a thread. Chances are it has been discussed repeatedly. Welcome.
Thank you. I appreciate the help.

Technically its not an "update", its a leaked rom. There are a few roms that have froyo that are pretty stable. If you want HSPA id go with Shep, if you want stripped down almost vanilla check out the dev cde froyo beta 3 or whatever its called. Good luck. Oh and make sure you have three button combo before you start flashing like crazy. (three button combo means that you can get into download mode or recovery mode with volume buttons held down and then power phone on while still holding volume buttons) read read read
You might want to download quick boot from the market as well. This has been a valuable tool for me.

No sweat. Try searching captivate roms in the search field. You will find pages of different search results. Don't worry, i am somewhat of a level 2 beginner myself. =D
Alright, noob here too, and I've looked high and low, and I cannot for the life of me find out how to flash kernels/roms using Odin. Anyone wanna help out?
I wasn't to use titanium to back up my phone but its saying I need to go to applications and click "unknown sources" but that's not an option in my settings. Please help.

Dont worry. The easiest way is to Root your phone + Download Rom manager from the Market + Install Rom manager as directed + then use Rom Manager itself to install the preferred rom.
Reminder: depending on which Rom you install, there are specific instructions on how to install them as well. READ + READ. Usually if you go to the OP of the acutal Rom you are looking for, it will give you step by step info on which is the best method of installing.
Also, keep in mind that YOU MUST be able to go into 1) recovery 2) download modes with the 3-button key combo as a safety precaution. It is very, very, VERY helpful....unless of course you are familiar with ADB.
Other methods include downloading the ROm + rename to "update.zip" + place in your Internal SD card + boot in recovery + re-install packages.
Odin is for more advanced users as it requires knowledge of different files to attach to Odin WITH, and then installing with Odin (ex: Kernel swapping).
There is also Odin One CLick, however, DO NOT confuse that with the regular ODIN.
Good Luck!
With all due respect to everyone this post belongs in the QA section and not the DEV section.
That would be the first piece of advice is to post in the correct section. Second You can look at the thread for Cognition 2.2 it has a good following and also a good wiki to help you understand things

I wouldn't put much emphasis on it. Disregard and proceed forward with Titanium. I always hit "ok" and went on with removing bloatware and of course....saving (creating Back ups) prior to.

Thanks for the detailed answer, but on the cognition wiki, in one of the steps it simply says to flash to a 2.1 kernel using ODIN, and I have no clue how to do so. I've figured out how to use ROM manager pretty well, as the directions are much simpler (in my opinion). Is it never necessary to use ODIN, and would using it just be for convenience? I'm unsure of what to do when I see "flash to this kernel using ODIN", and would like to know if it's possible to skip ODIN altogether and just use clockwork.

There are multiple articles in the Q&A section, this section, and other sites that tell you how to use Odin. Most of the ROMs that require Odin even say how to use them.
This thread is going to get moved to Q&A and you won't see it again. Best bet is to read the stickies. I'm not trying to be mean to anyone, but posting without looking isn't going to get you any favors (from the mods).

Read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989 that is for the Odin one click when you read flash stock as an instruction. Then there is the Odin used here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797282. I am not being a jerk or anything and I don't mind helping but how are you not seeing these threads on this very forum?

There are some Roms / Kernels/ Lagfixes that can be installed without Odin. And unless you know your way around Odin, then i would stay away from it. Usually "re-install packages" with recovery mode works for me.
Flashing to 2.1 with Odin means you will more than likely be using Odin One Click....NOT regular Odin. I cannot stress that enough. If you search in XDA for just Odin, you will find the answers you need. Remember, there are 2 different versions of them. One is a simple "one click" tool to go back to stock (for whatever purposes) ....the Other Odin....is used to swap kernels and also install Roms, but not JUST stock roms, other modified Roms as well as Lag fixes and such.
Recently, I had a very long discussion with some helpful users regarding how my market disappeared in the Android Themes section. After never recovering my stock market application, I finally just flashed to the cognition rom that is built for 2.1.
This was a huge risk for me because for some reason my phone is not found in Odin when it is in download mode. I have already tried everything to get it recognized, but nothing was able to get it recognized. If I were to brick my phone, I don't think I could fix it. I soft bricked it during the problem with the Market, but luckily I was able to get the phone working again through recovery.
I am thinking of flashing to the new cognition so that I can get my phone running on a 2.2 based rom and then quit flashing until I get a better phone or figure out my Odin problems.
I just have a few questions. I know a lot of people recommend flashing to stock first (which I can't do), while others don't flash stock. I should be able to just disable Voodoo and hopefully flash successfully to a new rom, correct? Also, what are the chances of a permanent brick? As long as I could get into recovery I could probably get the phone back up again without the use of Odin, right?
Well, first, this belongs in Q&A but...
It sounds like you have nothing to lose at this point. A lot of people flash roms without going back to stock, myself included. Disabling lagix is recommended though. I've seen a few people have issues going from 2.2.1 to 2.2 so keep that in mind if you're currently running 2.2.1.
As far as bricking your phone, it's always a possibility. Proceed with caution.
As a side, did you try to battery pull method to get Odin to recognize your phone?

Sounds like your running eclair. Do this to get into download mode.
Open stock Odin.
Power off the phone.
Remove the battery.
Connect your phone to your computer via USB.
While holding down the volume up and down buttons simultaneously re-insert the battery.
Odin should now recognize your phone and allow you to flash back to stock.
I haven't done that in a while.

I've read everywhere and searched everything I could...It seems ATT updated froyo so I can do anything with update.zip or go into downloading mode, just recovery mode...
Can anyone solve my problem... I have rooted it and unlocked Non market apps on it...
Oh yes, I used Kies in order to update to 2.2
Odin oneclick,if your build numb get is 1009, , out l lower. Otherwise, use regular odin. Plenty of articles here on how to do it. Next time, please use search before starting a new thread.

you dont need to go to 2.1 stock. just any stock.
hell i dont even bother going to stock between rom.
almost all the roms WIPE your phone before install anyway.... so stock goes bye bye,,,
You must not have searched too hard because this has been answered at least a dozen times. Newbie FAIL.
With him on 2.2, 3e would cause a few extra steps before he actually got a new rom flashed, right?

Please do a search before opening a new thread. This has been covered many times already.
I have been looking through the threads, and havent seen what I am looking for. So hopefully i will not get flamed to bad. I tried to install mikeymikes GR12, I got through the first stage of downloading the gingerbread rom to the phone through odin, but then it went south. I lost root and was unable to get back to the download screen. I then tried to use the all in one tool to root the phone, and that put me to the recovery screen where i could not use the ok button, just the volume up and down buttons. I just managed to get the download screen to come back, but i cant get anything else to work. Any suggestions on what to do, where to go from here.
Thank you for your help
I would go back to stock first. I believe your problem lies in the bootloaders. There are two bootloaders in the beginning and if you don't have the gingerbread ones installed, you won't install gingerbread properly.
I would use DesignGears One Click Odin to go back to stock and load the Froyo drivers. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989. Make sure you open up Odin first before plugging in your phone, then hit the Start button.
Once that is done, you can try again, but read about getting the GB bootloaders installed properly before you try to flash a GB ROM. Any of the GB ROM instructions should get you there. Just make sure you know all the steps before you try it again.
Good Luck!!
I don't see why you would be flamed for your question. That is what Q&A is for and you are in a bad spot. The biggest thing to remember is to be as specific as possible when you post a question. This includes what you were trying to do, what steps you took, what was the result, when did the problem occur (which step) and what you have tried to do, if anything to fix it.
One more thing. It is always possible that the USB cable is bad or that the USB port you are plugging into (on the computer) isn't working properly. You might also want to plug into a different USB port.
Sorry these posts are broken up, but as I'm coming up with ideas, I'm posting.
Here's something you should try:
(I wrote this for Team Phoenix, hence the sig.. But it works the same with every ROM. There's a link to a very nice tutorial I suggest you follow).

Me too. If we can ... Remember not all things can be recovered from so please read everything twice before ever touching your phone.
10-4. My next question is: where do I get froyo from. Kies sees my eclair version as unregistered, so it wont update. And my ota sees an update is needed, but when i tried, the area im in has crappy signal, so the update failed and now i have to wait 24 hours to do it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks again
are you planning on flashing a custom rom?
if so updating to official froyo is A HUGE WASTE OF TIME
EDIT:are you Canadian by chance? if so check this thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979133

Going on official froyo will get you the signature failed error (which you need the 3e recovery fix if you ever want to flash a custom ROM).
So, basically, if you want more than 2.2 official release. We suggest you don't update. If you're perfectly fine staying on 2.2 Froyo, then there's no problem lol
As for Kies, you shouldn't have any problem using Kies mini. Other than that, there is a 2.2 flash around here. I'm sure you'll find it doing a little search
I had root on my official froyo for a couple of months without a problem. Right now i cant get my phone to go into download mode, it only goes to the battery screen. If i can get to download i can make some headway

If the battery pull way isn't working. You could always go read on abd. It send SU commands and you could get your phone in downlaod mode that way.
Is there an easy way to get adb without getting the sdk. I downloaded the sdk and it keeps saying i need java, when i download the java crap it says the same thing.

Hi guys
I recently bought a 2nd hand i897, the previous guy installed a icssgs on it.
Although it's running flawless and smooth.
But i decide to switch it back to custom gingerbread rom, because of the camera of it.
Ok the problem is, as far as i see my i897 has CWM installed (+ - & power combo works here). I can go in and out with ease. But my download mode is not working (Tried every methods in one of the contributor's post).
I seen in another post, people said because of the ICS rom stop me from getting download mode.
Later, I tried to install some custom GB roms like Legend 3.7, Apex 12 and also cm7 nightly. But they all failed.
Either stop at the boot screen or can't get passed CWM with some error messages.
My noob question is do i need the odin one click to get my i897 back to kk4, and do everything all over again, if I really want a GB rom?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843&page=23
I think i have a i897 GB bootloader (as I startup with AT&T white page, and I'm running on icssgs, correct me if i am wrong)
Thx
Yes you do need to do the Odin one click to get back to GB. Since the device has the ICS rom on it you already have the correct bootloaders.
I recommend the ki2 one click, it has boogs kernel with cwm baked in. Since this is a second hand phone you might also want to format the SD card to avoid any gremilns in the future.
Yeah just flash a one click to kk4, you shouldn't need bootloaders. Describe what you are doing to get in download mode

yes that would be the thread to get the one click from. Now when I mentioned formating the sd that is to prevent bugs from poping up later, it wont do anything for you now. one method I have used in the past for getting into dl mode is
1 open your odin/hemidal one click on your pc
2 remove phone battery
3 plug in usb to phone and pc
now heres where it kinda gets tricky
4 while holding in vol +and- replace battery
if Loyd is looking down upon you you'll get dl mode

Go Here and try removing the samsung captivate drivers >>>> http://www.petri.co.il/removing-old-drivers-from-vista-and-windows7.htm
Then Reinstall them
From my experience, it's probably your driver has problems.
At the very least, your computer detect your 'plug in' and you can get to download mode
So solving your usb driver is the key
The best way to get back to stock that i have found is KK4-SE-one click just search the forums for it youll have stock rooted gingerbread drivers are already supplied hope this helps
