Hi guys
I recently bought a 2nd hand i897, the previous guy installed a icssgs on it.
Although it's running flawless and smooth.
But i decide to switch it back to custom gingerbread rom, because of the camera of it.
Ok the problem is, as far as i see my i897 has CWM installed (+ - & power combo works here). I can go in and out with ease. But my download mode is not working (Tried every methods in one of the contributor's post).
I seen in another post, people said because of the ICS rom stop me from getting download mode.
Later, I tried to install some custom GB roms like Legend 3.7, Apex 12 and also cm7 nightly. But they all failed.
Either stop at the boot screen or can't get passed CWM with some error messages.
My noob question is do i need the odin one click to get my i897 back to kk4, and do everything all over again, if I really want a GB rom?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843&page=23
I think i have a i897 GB bootloader (as I startup with AT&T white page, and I'm running on icssgs, correct me if i am wrong)
Thx
Yes you do need to do the Odin one click to get back to GB. Since the device has the ICS rom on it you already have the correct bootloaders.
I recommend the ki2 one click, it has boogs kernel with cwm baked in. Since this is a second hand phone you might also want to format the SD card to avoid any gremilns in the future.
Yeah just flash a one click to kk4, you shouldn't need bootloaders. Describe what you are doing to get in download mode

put it back, hold +-
plug in the usb charger
.....it goes straight to charging
I have been google some more.
Somepeople mention by formating the internal SD might solve the problem

yes that would be the thread to get the one click from. Now when I mentioned formating the sd that is to prevent bugs from poping up later, it wont do anything for you now. one method I have used in the past for getting into dl mode is
1 open your odin/hemidal one click on your pc
2 remove phone battery
3 plug in usb to phone and pc
now heres where it kinda gets tricky
4 while holding in vol +and- replace battery
if Loyd is looking down upon you you'll get dl mode
...Maybe cause it's like 1:30 a.m. or I'm totally missin something ---- but who is "Loyd" ?? :/

Go Here and try removing the samsung captivate drivers >>>> http://www.petri.co.il/removing-old-drivers-from-vista-and-windows7.htm
Then Reinstall them
From my experience, it's probably your driver has problems.
At the very least, your computer detect your 'plug in' and you can get to download mode
So solving your usb driver is the key
The best way to get back to stock that i have found is KK4-SE-one click just search the forums for it youll have stock rooted gingerbread drivers are already supplied hope this helps

Few days ago I rooted and put Serendipity 2.0 on my Build 1010 with no problems.
I want to try Cognition 3.01.
So I followed the SAME method used in the MobileTechVideos and I cannot figure out how to get it into download mode
I have tried the 3 button method several times and it just takes me to the battery charging icon.
------
Would I be able to just pull up Odin3 (I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0) .exe as administrator, plug in USB, turn on phone, and go to DL mode through the phone via that way? Would it recognize it on my computer so I can just go back to stock and do the entire process over again for a ROM?
Or is this easier: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818439
Would going to download manager through my phone while having Odin3 pulled up on the computer and my USB of course plugged in, work???
Please, someone, anyone!!! Wanting to try a new ROM so bad!!!
I would flash back to stock and start fresh
Have you used odin before?
I can get you into download mode and going with odin if your phone is working and recognized by your computer but with your build you don't want to use the odin you linked I am pretty sure.

You would probably end up with a brick.
See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10056254&postcount=36
And, BTW, there is no need to flash stock before flashing Cognition, but it's still good to find a reliable way in case you ever have a real need to do so. Also, I'm pretty sure Cognition still includes and sbl.bin that will fix your button combos (that's not normally a good thing, but in your case it is).

Not everyone. It's apparently mainly confined to the Captivate forums and not universally recommended even here (Darky's instructions say nothing about it, for example). There is no benefit to doing so, believe it or not. Of course I don't care how anyone does it. It's up to you. If you tell people it's safer, however, you're misinforming people based on something that got started months ago and just became the status quo.

Well bottom line, I think the easiest method for me to get into download mode every time I want to root/flash is by using the 99 cent jig. Thanks everyone for there info.
So I got into download mode by installing a 3buttonfix.zip via CWM.
I used Odin3 exactly like your supposed to. Went to stock, master cleared. Everything passed and completed.
My phone is now back to stock but still showing all files on my SD card. I even tried a factory reset and it still shows them.
Any ideas?
Blah, still no one?

I am wondering how easy it is to brick my Captivate. Also, how easy is it to brick the phone, with the only solution being to use a JIG?
Is the only way to brick if you do something stupid? If you follow all instructions (flash to stock, etc.) is it even possible to brick it? I've upgraded my phone to 2.2 using Kies; does the fact that I've upgraded once make it muc less likely to fail and brick later?
I'm wondering this because all the ROM makers must flash constantly, so I'm thinking there must be a way to avoid bricks.
Thank you!

Depends on your Captivate. In general, it's a bad idea to flash back to stock unless absolutely necessary. Bad Odin flashes are one of the biggest causes of bricked Captivates. Bad flashes through other methods (like CWM) usually leave you with boot problems, but working button combos for download mode. You should also check beforehand that your button combos work, since some Captivates are without them out of the box.
Also, wrong forum. This belongs in Q&A.

Flashing back to stock is only needed when you have to, but no you do not have to flash to stock every time you flash a rom, a bad odin flash is usually the main cause in a bricked phone.. But as long as you can get to recovery or download mode, then its not bricked, you can usually get something flashed either way

Do these "bad" flashes occur do to doing improper things, like pulling the cable mid-update, or forgetting to unlagfix before, or stuff like that? Or are they purely random?
Normally The bad flashes from odin are due to the fact the the phone being flashed did not have the 3 button combo by default. I personally have flashed ALOT and always odin and master clear before a new rom, the only time I bricked and needed a jig was when I had my old phone (got it replaced) that didnt have the 3 button and used the wrong odin.

Thanks! I'm gonna check if my Captivate has this 3 button recovery mode.

you can buy jigs online people sell for 20$ or so...but it's actually very simple to make and so cheap as well so buying one is slightly pointless. also, i have flashed too many roms i've lost track, my phone shutdown in the middle of an odin, etc etc, and i always manage to get out of it so i wouldn't be concerned. having 3button enabled helps tho

I am guessing that you are concerned with bricking yours. You must be thinking about flashing a rom for the first time. I needed the jig yesterday for the first time. From what I understand, the jig method is almost a guarantee fir download mode, making the captivate nearly unbrickable. Can it be bricked... I am sure it can, but you are part of a community full of resources to keep you from doing so. You trepidation is not unique... I too was slow to flash my captivate. Now that I have, I have a phone that I love. I have been able to contribute to the community. And... I have a new found addiction.

A question about download mode:
I want to test if my captivate can get into download mode by the 3-button combo. However, I don't have any zips to update or anything to download or anything like that.
How do I enter download mode and then exit without making any modifications?
I thought I could just power the phone off, but in big letters it says "Do not power off target" (in videos I've watched).

Accepted, yes.
Stupiud, yes.
You don't need anything to flash to get into DL mode
Just follow the instructions as it says and if it comes up you can just reboot the phone. Although you have to pull the battery. Although I've heard that holding just the Vol Up and Power for 10 secs also works. I've never tried it though

Depends on a lot of factors. It could be that your Captivate doesn't support flashing back to earlier than JH2 (JF6 one-click will brick), that your Captivate is already missing button combos (requires C3P0LOL's fixed Odin or AT&T's OTA JH7 update), a bad USB cable, problems with Windows, using the wrong USB port, etc. (all on top of user error). Lagfix won't affect Odin flashes.

I wouldn't say they are random. They are probably mostly caused by user error or some fault in the USB chain (port, cable, driver interactions). Whatever the root cause, from what I can see almost all bricks/semibricks are the result of using odin (I include cases such as where a cwm flash results in a boot loop and the user can recover because he used one-click and has no button combos).
Recently, I had a very long discussion with some helpful users regarding how my market disappeared in the Android Themes section. After never recovering my stock market application, I finally just flashed to the cognition rom that is built for 2.1.
This was a huge risk for me because for some reason my phone is not found in Odin when it is in download mode. I have already tried everything to get it recognized, but nothing was able to get it recognized. If I were to brick my phone, I don't think I could fix it. I soft bricked it during the problem with the Market, but luckily I was able to get the phone working again through recovery.
I am thinking of flashing to the new cognition so that I can get my phone running on a 2.2 based rom and then quit flashing until I get a better phone or figure out my Odin problems.
I just have a few questions. I know a lot of people recommend flashing to stock first (which I can't do), while others don't flash stock. I should be able to just disable Voodoo and hopefully flash successfully to a new rom, correct? Also, what are the chances of a permanent brick? As long as I could get into recovery I could probably get the phone back up again without the use of Odin, right?
Well, first, this belongs in Q&A but...
It sounds like you have nothing to lose at this point. A lot of people flash roms without going back to stock, myself included. Disabling lagix is recommended though. I've seen a few people have issues going from 2.2.1 to 2.2 so keep that in mind if you're currently running 2.2.1.
As far as bricking your phone, it's always a possibility. Proceed with caution.
As a side, did you try to battery pull method to get Odin to recognize your phone?

Sounds like your running eclair. Do this to get into download mode.
Open stock Odin.
Power off the phone.
Remove the battery.
Connect your phone to your computer via USB.
While holding down the volume up and down buttons simultaneously re-insert the battery.
Odin should now recognize your phone and allow you to flash back to stock.

Back when I was really trying to figure the problem out (about 2 months ago), I was trying everything mentioned. I tried different versions of odin, 3 separate computers, windows xp/vista/7, front and back usb ports, multiple drivers, etc... The weird thing is that the phone is recognized in odin when it is on, which is how I was able to do a master clear on it. It is just when it is in download mode that it does not recognize it.
I eventually just gave up thinking that it was just a problem my phone has. The only thing I have not been able to test is using a different cable. I have been using the original OEM one, but I guess it could be the problem.
When did you bought the device?
if its within a year... you can exchange it... this looks like easy way out.

Unfortunately, It was purchased off contract and used from someone who lived near me. It is less than a year old, I just don't have the receipt for it. I would say that I bought it around the beginning of last August. They guy who sold it said he only used it for 2 weeks.
Ok, im just going to risk it... Phone should be flashed within the next 10 minutes or so.

I had the same prob at first and what i found is that I had to remove the drivers and then let windows 7 reinstall the drivers on its own again after turning debugging on, then used Odin to activate DL mode and let those drivers install as well

This is in the wrong place. You will hear that several times I am sure.
What did you do before it started doing this? What ROM are you running? Did you try entering a download with key combos and inserting battery?
you can change the name, go into advanced mode when you edit the op. but this is in the wrong section kindly ask a moderator to move it.
have you tried it with odin already open? is this when trying to 3 button in or even if you 2button + usb cable? the volume up+ volume down + usb cable never fails me.
did you have gingerbread on the phone? if yes, did you try volume down+power for 3 seconds? menu + volume down + power?

Well it doesnt even matter I know what your problem is, do not worry, you sir are a build 1010 (+) such as myself.
And when flashing back to stock FROM GINGERBREAD you MUST use this method but do not worry.
Either buy a jig:
http://www.mobiletechvideos.com/blog/?page_id=100
Or look up how to build one yourself:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
After you access download mode use THIS METHOD to flash back to stock AFTER you use Odin One Click:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995143
or...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10056254&postcount=36
**Note that I have not used izcezars package but that should also work flawlessly, I have always used the JH2 method of going back to stock but either should work perfectly in your situation**
This is what I have done multiple times now when I go stock after Gingerbread:
1. One Click (TO REPLACE BOOTLOADERS)
2. This exact bootloop
3. Download Jig
4. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995143 or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10056254&postcount=36
5. Back to stock with correct bootloaders.
Good luck, and dont worry this happened to me your fine.

Hahaha I agree with you about the wrong section however I helped him, because honestly I just think that itll be better if he just gets his answer, tell him what he did wrong, he learns his lesson, fixes his phone, and no more posts in develpoment that arent development
Heck maybe one day he will be helping out someone else with this problem too haha.
Check your pm
Edit: I don't play these games!
I HAVE THE FIX: SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME TODAY, ALSO I WAS ON GR-12!!
ONLY OPTION: Go to Radio shack buy 3 100kohm resistors and make a jig, its simple http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0aoabVtPJ8
trust me follow this vid!!!!
once you get into download mode, flash stock GB again, follow all the steps, using odin 1.7.
I am back on GR-12, Im not flashing anytime soon!!!
Just so everyone knows, where should a help question like this be posted if not the Q&A section?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
this was posted in the dev section, it has since been moved to the proper section. but it also could have been asked in the stock rom thread or the gr12 thread.
xda take off the 10 post rule for android development

ok ill try it the Jig is coming today but my mom found out and told my dad t cut me off
what do i say
Not sure this Q&A is the right place for parental advice either
I am guessing you tried the battery pull method more than once and with correct button combo. I have to try it multiple times to get it to work.
Bagtery pull = remove battery, open one click, press and hold the proper download mode buttons (i.e. Vol up + down or just down), then insert the usb cable. Should boot into dl at some point. I could have sworn I read somewhere that this worked for all builds.
