[q] About Voodoo... - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, i just installed Darkys 6.0.3 port, and it has a folder called voodoo in my SD Card, now im just wondering, how can i disable this or is it already disabled? also if i flash back to stock and i havent disabled this will it cause problems?? please help and Im sorry if i posted in teh wrong section??

Yes, this is the wrong section to post this, but anyway, I believe the 6.0.3 port already has voodoo disabled. To enable it, you need to delete the disable-voodoo folder.
If you were to odin one click back to stock, it wouldn't cause any problems even if voodoo was enabled because odin restores rfs.
If you were to flash back to stock some other way, it would cause problems if you didn't disable voodoo

its not exactly a folder its juts a file that says Disable-lagfix

To disable Vodoo find the file/folder named disable-vodoo in the vodoo folder and delete it then reboot
Please search before opening a new thread and make sure to post in the right section.

[Q] How to install Allshare .apk and .odex

After much google searching, and searching here on XDA, I'm at a loss. I have the Allshare.apk and .odex, however I have had no luck installing them. I've tried various suggesions, including pushing them from adb shell, and nothing seems to work.
I would love to continue using custom roms, but not having Allshare is a big reason for me to just use rooted stock. The rom I'm trying to install it on is Cognition Beta (Froyo).
Titanium Backup also doesn't work for this. It tells me that it backed up Allshare, but when I try to install it, the restore button doesn't even show up.
Also, a quick question for Rom Manager. With the rom backup feature, can you only restore a backup for the rom you are using? (i.e if you want to restore a backup for another rom, you have to flash the rom first, then restore?)
Although posted in the wrong forum... I'd also like an answer to this. Running CDE and would really like to have AllShare to stream movies off my media server.

Not sure why this would be the wrong forum. I'm using a Captivate, and trying to install Allshare on a Captivate rom.
use root explorer and add them to System/app and paste both files there.
reboot your device, and voila

Still at square one. Altho the .apk and .odex are now in system/apps, it didn't affect anything. Also, looked up root explorer, and how to use it, then downloaded it. It won't remount my main file system as read only...so it's permanently in r/w now.
Also tried flashing to killer23d's rom, to use titanium backup on the allshare he has in his rom, still wouldn't work.
So....clueless at this point.

At one point, I had this same problem, and the only solution there is, is to reflash the rom. It's a PITA, I know. And don't worry about what your filesystem is mounted as in Root Explorer. After every reboot it reverts to read only again.

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be my case. Even after reflashing Cognition, my file system is still R/W. Didn't even have to hit the white button on root explorer to paste files into system/app.
Also, adding dlna.apk and dlna.odex into system/app still isn't giving me Allshare.
Edit: Well, I've found a better solution. I'm gonna go with Killer23d's rom...looks alot more like stock Froyo, is based on the I9000, has Allshare, AND Mobile AP. Both features that I wanted.
Thanks for trying guys. If anyone does come up with a solution tho, please feel free to use this thread, as searching for allshare.apk on google results in this thread being either the 2nd or 3rd search result (can't remember).
Works for me.
I just put AllShare back in, using the attached file, and it's working fine.
I'm running Cognition 2.2 Beta 9.1.3 and put the file into "system\app" using Root Explorer.
I also changed the permissions of the file and selected just the following:
USER = READ + WRITE
GROUP = READ
OTHERS = READ
Remove any other checked permissions.
In case you don't know how to get into the permissions, just long-press the file, from within Root Explorer, and choose "Permissions" from the list that pops up.
Don't forget to reboot right after.
Your issue is most likely because you are trying to reintegrate an odex'ed AllShare while you are using a de-odex'ed ROM. Ozone777's file looks to be about the correct size for a de-odex'ed AllShare. Just move it into the /system/app folder with root explorer as mentioned above and you should be good to go.
I used terminal to drop the APK attached in the previous post into /system/app and it works beautifully. CogYo 2.2.9

The one app that I really wanted back from the stock load!! thank you!!! Worked perfectly on Cognition v2.2 BETA9.1.3
allshare installed
This forum is awesome, I was able to put back allshare and it is working like a champ.
Thanks guys.

[Q] Voodoo disable help!

ok...I've read and read and read, and tried numerous things, and I still can't seem to get voodoo disabled. I've tried numerous things, which follow:
-place "disable-lagfix" folder in /sdcard/voodoo
-place "disable-lagfix" folder in /voodoo
-place "disable- lagfix" folder in both above locations
-place "disable lagfix" folder in both above locations
-place "disable-lagfix" text file in both locations
none of these seem to be working. I'm not getting a longer boot time after reboot, the log in the voodoo folder indicates that it's still enabled, and my head is about to explode. Help please!!
And, please don't tell me to read. I've read the hell outta the forums, searched, read through the entire cognition thread, read the threads that come up when I searched for "disable voodoo"...in other words, I have read, and now it is time to ask questions since my problem still seems to exist.
thanks!
Are you actually using quotation marks? If so, don't. The folder should be disable-lagfix. Then reboot. No actual quotes. Hope this helps
Captivate
Cog 2.2
not using the quotes, just used them here to clarify what I had used for the file/folder names....
I keep trying....still nothing. Might try flashing a new rom just to see what happens. My phone allows the 3 button combo, so hopefully I can still restore if I f*** something up...
****edit***
so, I just deleted all traces of any disable-lagfix file/folder and rebooted. it took forever to boot up. I'm assuming it just re-enabled itself. I may have actually had things disabled this whole time and not noticed. Will try tomorrow to disable again and load up a rom. Hopefully this won't screw my phone up

Run a quadrant score usingthe free app. Tell me what your score is. I would not flash another Rom. You can flash stock using odin.
Captivate
Cog 2.2
totally forgot about quadrant being able to tell...
I'm pretty sure I've got a handle on things now. After deleting all traces of the "disable" folder, I got quadrant of 1400.
I just placed the "disable" folder back in voodoo and rebooted. This time it's taking a while to boot again, and I'm pretty sure it's gonna be good. Quadrant score now yields 1008
looks like I got it figgered out. thanks for your help dude. mucho props. totally forgot about being able to use quadrant for seeing if lagfix was enabled.
I created a disable-lagfix folder in my voodoo folder so as to disable it. I then rebooted phone and the friggen thing wiped all my data and the whole phone needed to be resetup.
So make sure you backup beforehand!
On a side note. After removing the disable-lagfix folder it booted as per normal and doesnt seem to have re-enabled the lagfix.
Weird
Maybe you have a bug. Try flashing to stock.

[Q] ClockPackage on di11igaf's

Issue 1: I'm trying to install ClockPackage.apk, Gallery3D.apk, MyFiles.apk in order to have the stock clock. I keep getting the error "Failure [INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_NO_CERTIFICATES]" when i try to use the command adb install (any of the 3).apk. I have also tried "adb push" which doesn't seem like a valid command. I tried moving the 3 apk files to my sd card on the phone and using "installer" and "eoeAppinstaller" from the market and these fail as well. Any more suggestions? I really like this di11igaf's ROM, but I cannot stand the new alarm ( i like the gradual volume increase of the stock). I have tried a couple of market clocks, but they just didn't work for me. Thank you very much in advance.
Issue 2: If I use CWM and choose Reboot into Recovery i get the following:
Android system recovery <3e>
Samsung Recovery Utils
- for BML -
Enter OK Key, Select : Vol UP / Vol Down
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
format internal sd card

At this point I can use the volume buttons to scroll up and down, but the power button will not select anything. The only thing I can do is remove the battery and boot the phone back up, which then takes me into CWM recovery v2.5.1.0. I was able to install the di11i add on, but I don't think that I'm supposed to be pulling the battery to get to this point.
Thanks again and sorry about the long post.
Im no expert on this type of stuff but I use di11i roms and I just transfer apk's to the root of the phone through the regular mass storage mode and use root explorer for the rest.Havent had any problems yet.
As for issue 2 is the package a .zip file? If not that may or may not be the problem.
From my own personal experience the 3dapp isn't sign so I can't install it too
System apps are best copied manually into the /system/app folder using app like root explorer. Make sure the folder is in r/w mode.

+1 you can simply use root explorer to copy the apk files into \system\app folder. quick and easy.

It is a zip file and it installed. What concerned me was the process. Should it have frozen up like that and forced a battery pull? Nothing I've read leads me to believe that was proper behavior of the CWM.

I don't have that directory. Are you creating it on the phone and then putting the files into it? I may have not been clear on what I am trying to do. I am trying to do what was posted in this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11207089&highlight=clockpackage#post11207089 posts #2515
I just looked into exactly what you were talking about and I got it figured out.It wasnt installing for me either but this is what I did and it works now.
Through mass storage mode I copied the 3 files to the root of the card.
Then I moved the files to the app folder which is inside the system folder.
I use root explorer for the moving.
When you move them into the app folder its gonna ask to overwrite say yes.
After you get everything moved it will work if you go to the app in the drawer.I never actually installed anything but did an overwrite.

u cannot see it in my files. u need to have root access, and something like root explorer.
So it looks like I could have just copied and pasted the files from the sdcard/Clock folder I placed them in to the /system/app folder using Super Manager. I swear I tried that and it failed before I went through all the crappy steps below. Oh well.
Ok this is going to sound pretty cheap, but I didn't want to pay the ~$4.02 for an ap that I was going to use three times. I did find another way. I used Super Manager and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877316&highlight=installing+apk post #3.
So for any other cheapskates out there.
1. Install Super Manager on phone
2. Install ADB on pc
3. Connect phone to pc and copy the three files ClockPackage.apk, Gallery3D.apk, and MyFiles.apk to the sd card. (I just drag and dropped in windows explorer)
4. Use Super Manager to move to /system/app/ and rename the existing file Gallery3D.apk (I renamed it to Gallery3D.old)
5. Use adb to copy the 3 files from the directory in which you originally placed them on the phone to /system/app/
in adb type:
adb shell
su
(accept the prompt on your screen)
cd /sdcard/whereveryoustuckfile
cp blahblahblah.apk /system/app/ (the red from Pirateghost).
6. Reboot
The clock and alarm work fine, but I cannot get Daily briefing option in alarm to work. I get a FC. I did install the "apk add on pack for 5.6" post 3 of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897416 , but I dont think Daily Briefing was included in that. Any suggestions? And one last thing - what is the di11iBrowserfix.zip from post 3 of the thread above for? Thanks again to all who contributed.
I got the daily briefing working. Everything is almost perfect, but I would like two things still.
1. Is there anyway to change the tune that is played when you have smart alarm selected? I have a different tone selected, but I think once you select smart alarm it defaults to that new age tone.
2. My alarm goes off, I stop it, but then I have to unlock it before I see the daily briefing. Can anyone think of a way to have the phone unlock when I turn off the alarm. I know it is so insignificant, but it used to do that when it was stock and it was pretty cool.
Come one guys and gals - don't make me figure this one out by myself j/k but seriously I have surprised myself already by getting this far and I really don't have skill or knowledge for the last two things. I'm learning though....slowly.
Thread etiquette
Did I do something wrong here? I got some really quick responses to my questions before, but nothing on my latest. I ask this next question with all seriousness - should I have started a new thread since it's kind of a new topic? No worries either way, I just want to post in the the most effective way. Thanks. BTW, my phone is working great. I'm getting ready to install 6.0 GPS is a little screwy - often has me west of my location by about 30 meters by I attribute that to the phones hardware. Other than that I have no complaints (except for the lame smart alarm tune)

Nope. Get the CWM flashable zip, and copy to ur sdcard. Then go to CWM recovery console, and install this zip. Reboot.
But, please take a nandroid backup, and try to avoid OC kernels if u r unsure ur phone can handle it. Phones freeze when tried to oc beyond their capability.

[Q] Disable voodoo lagfix

Can anyone help me disable voodoo lagfix? I've been searching but can't find instructions on how to.
I'm currently on Serendipity 7 and want to try the leaked Gingerbread 2.3.4. I've read to disable Voodoo lagfix first.
I've checked in recovery and there are not settings to disable.
Any help is appreciated.
Also, does Voodoo need to be disabled when switching between roms? I've gone back and forth from Serendipity 6.4 and 7 to stock with no issues. Maybe i'm reading too much but just want to be sure.
I'm not running Serendipity so it might be different but, open your app drawer look for an app with lagfix control , open hit disable lagfix , then hit reboot.
As for disabling it flashing between roms ? That will be explained on the OPs installation page whether you have to or not .
That app is Voodoo Control, where u'll find Lagfix preferences, uncheck all and reboot.
Ok thanks,
Just to be sure under lagfix preferences uncheck Ext4 coversion and ext4/system and lagfix debug mode. Mine has ext4 conversion and ext4/sys is checked.
Then just reboot and it's disabled?
You don't need the app st all, in. your sdcard there will be a folder named voodoo, in that folder make a new file (or folder doesn't matter) and name it disable-lagfix and then reboot. That is all the app does.
Yep , only those 2 are suppose to be checked if u have it enabled. U can use the method suggested by studa or the voodoo control app.
P.S. that new sig of urs is freakin' awesome studa

[SOLVED] Deleted bloatware but came back after reboot

Hi!
I have rooted my phone, and deleted bloatware using uninstall.
After reboot, the apps returned, so I deleted /system/apps/*.apk (relevant) files (I'd also like to know what are the *.odex files if someone can kindly tell me )
Then, I rebooted again, and again they were... I have read in previous threads that flashing the kernel is needed. Is that so? And if so, how can it be done?
Thanks!

You need a custom kernel with /system write permission (unsecured kernel) .
You will not be able to install ota updates if you mess with /system files.

for future reference, you can also stay on stock kernel (dont really know why ) and do the changes in custom recovery (eg TWRP)
if you want a relatively easy file manager for custom recovery, check out Aroma File Manager... that would save you the hassle of using an adb shell
oh, and if all is good now, can you also edit main thread title to include [SOLVED], thanks
