Completely dead phone after using Odin 1.7 - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys!
I'm new to Android and how it all works.
here I have a Galaxy S I9000 on T-Mobile with 2.1
I wanted to upgrade to 2.2 and from what I've read on the forums I did the following:
downloaded Odin and .pit files (used odin 1.7, and pit file ending in 512)
then used for PDA file I9000UGJL2_homebinary_add_param.tar
plugged my phone in, went into download mode and started installing the 2.2 I guess.. and now is COMPLETELY DEAD!! won't turn on at all and I'm really frustrated. I removed the battery and the sd card and tried to boot it up few times ... but NOTHING!!!
please help!!!

You can try this, remove the battery then just press the buttons for download mode while its held down find a way to insert the battery back, this should give you back your download mode.

my phone doesn't have the 3 button thing... my home button is a touch button not a regular one.

Then do the combo keys required for your phone ( if any ) while the battery is removed and insert the battery while having it held down. Should have researched a lot before flashing with Odin.

Don't worry, the t-mobile version is pretty hard to brick
here is the correct forum for ur phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=708

[Q]My captivate totally bricked, what can I do?

I was trying to flash the Cognition 2.4 ROM, when it's done and reboot, it died. Nothing works, no download mode, no recovery mode, nothing on screen, but the phone is getting hotter and hotter after the power button is pressed.
I tried the procedures that says can cure a totally bricked captivate, but it didn't help.
Is there any other ways to unbrick it? It's only the 4th day after I purchase it
if you've only had it for 4 days, take it back..just don't tell em what you did to brick it..Just tell em you went to sleep and when you woke up thats how it was...or something to that affect
Just don't tell them you were trying to flash it or root it..Cause rooting DOES VOID YOUR WARRENTY!!!!
Search this site for Odin. There should be ways to recover. But as stated if you have had it for 4 days you can bring it back.
You said your phone just died. At what point, and how long did you wait before you gave up?
Captivate
Cog 2.4
Black Screen / RST_STATUS 0x0
Procedure:
1. Remove the battery, external SD card and SIM card.
2. Wait 10 seconds.
3. Open odin3
4. Connect usb cable.
5. Hold volume up + volume down + Power.
6. Insert battery.
7. Release POWER BUTTON ONLY.
Its worked when my phone did the same thing.
I used this one and it worked.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775911

I had this happen a few weeks ago, same thing flashing cognition and got the crazy messed up text and pulled the battery....
In my case the guy who fixed it for me told me he needed to reflash the bootloader
I paid someone for this since I couldn't find a way. I hope for your sake you don't have too and can do it for free

[Q] Samsung i9000 - Flashed wrong rom - Now dead

Hi All,
I have a samsung galaxy S with Froyo 2.2 installed via Kies.
Today I tried to flash it via Clockwork Mod Recovery...
However, I accidently selected the Axura 2.05Vibrant file...
The phone rebooted after the flash, showed some strange screens... and then died...
Now it's unresponsive to the Download Mode, Recovery Mode, etc...
All the button combo's fail.
Additional info, Originally the 3-button combo was disabled on this phone, but I fixed this according to info found on this forum...
Is this now an expensive paperweight? :-(
Thanks
Sis
Well Vibrant uses a different button combination then the I9000. Have you tried holding both volume button down and then pressing the power button? Alternatively, try pressing both volume button and then plug the usb in.

Get a usb jig.
if no luck at all try replacing the motherboard..it shoup fix it..cost me 250$..oh my..
Yep... If none of the known methods fix it... then the service center will have to replace the motherboard.
If it's still in Warranty see if they replace it for free. (don't tell them you tried flashing & hope they don't catch it)
my internal sd corrupted..tried every method i know but no luck..i even k1ll the bootloader by accidentally flashing a bell rom..no download mode any more and cant boot..totally dead..i wonder why my internal sd corrupt....i just but the oclf..and phone acting weird..i cant install/delete apps..seems the internal sd is not mounted properly.. ive bring it for repair and it cost me half the price of this phone..replacing the mother board..who wants my dead motherboard???=)

[Q] Stuck on clockworkmod

Hi
I tried to remove Bejeweled using a program I downloaded (I can't remember the name). It said it would reboot twice, but it seemed to have frozen after the first reboot, so I pulled the battery.
Now, every time I try to turn the phone on, it goes into ClockworkMod 2.5.1.0 and stays there. None of the buttons do anything at all, so I can't get to any of the options.
Samsung Kies and Odin 3 don't seem to recognise the phone when I plug it in by USB and I can't find any button combinations that stop it going to ClockworkMod.
I only got the phone a few days ago, so I'm not sure if I can send it back and claim the Froyo update on Kies broke it. I would prefer to fix it myself though. Is there a way to do this?
Thanks in advance.
So can you get into download mode or not?
No, I can't get to anything other than clockworkmod, and that freezes.
When I plug the usb lead in, it turns on without pressing the power button, but still freezes at clockworkmod. Hope that helps.

GOOD
What you want to do is, pull battery out, put it back in, Hold volume down and Home button, THEN put in the usb lead, That should put you into download mode, then you can flash thru odin
Pull ur battery so phone is completely dark hold the 3 button combo for the download mode the phone should power in download mode or last option is get a jig for a pound on ebay

Thanks for your help. When I tried azzledazzle's solution, it went to frozen clockworkmod again, but the Galaxy S screen at the start doesn't show. Also, my version has never responded to any key combos, even when it worked.
I have attached a picture of what Odin shows when I put the USB lead in. Not sure if I can do anything with it. By the way, I've never used Odin before so I don't know if there are any settings I need to change.
I'll order one of those 'jigs' but hopefully I can get it fixed before that arrives.
you have selected 512 pit, but you havent ticked re-partition, that is whats causing your problem.
you say your phone never responded to button combo's. does that mean you have never been in download mode ??
The 'jig' has arrived and put me straight into download mode! Definitely recommended for anyone who can't use the three button combos. I have used a new rom with the 512 pit and repartition unchecked, and Android 2.2.1 installed fine. This also solved the button combo problem.
In reply to azzledazzle, the only time I saw download mode before the jig arrived was when Kies mucked up an update.

3 button quesion

hello all,
question about the 3 button fix for the captivate. I just got the captivate a few months back and before i decided to rom it i investigated all the recovery tools i would need just in case.
I found 2 different variants of Odin3 one that needed a pit file and PDA file and another that had just one click restore to 2.1.
I tried the pit / PDA first if i recall it appeared to lock up, not sure on what part but i got it back in DL mode and then tried the one click which worked.
now let me preface this with before i tried anything i ensured the 3 button combo for download mode worked, and it did. I flashed Apex 5.2 and ever since then the 3 button combo ceased to work. I recently flashed to Firefly 3.0 and still the 3 button doesnt work, it would also appear the recovery mode does not work as well.
I have been getting to these modes using ADB, which works fine, but I would love to get 3 button back... but if its a risky procedure i will live with it, i do have a jig on the way, which just in case i can use to get back. but that leaves recovery mode not really accessable unless i use ADB?
any how thoughts comments suggestions are all welcome and thanks for being such an awesome site!
On a custom rom, hold the power button. Extended power menu has recovery and download right there.
How have you not seen it??
also SEARCH there is an odin that fixes the 3 button combo...
download mode is 2 button combo and no way to loose it.
hold both volumes + then plug in usb (keep held til screen comes on)
recovery mode is 3 button combo..
hold both volumes + then hold power (keep ALL held til screen comes on for 3 seconds)
studacris,
Yes i have seen the reboot into recovery, which is great the only issue i have is when flashing a different rom i want a back out solution. I also have found the fix, but was wondering how risky is it to apply this fix, and will it stay fixed? i would rather live with a minor inconvenience then a hard brick situation. thanks for the info=)
edit: this is the thread i was reading for the fix is this the most up to date one? also the attachment is missing the PIT file, is it needed anymore?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818439
TRusselo,
yeah i cant do either of those, which is my concern
odin one click flashes both bootloaders but sometimes, in later build phones the one click sbl.bin will, lose it's combo. The fix flashes the secondary bootloader, that is known to always work.
It's about as risky to flash as odin one click if not safer because it's only flashing one bootloader instead of both.
The pit file isn't needed you are not messing with the partitioning table in the least. Just put the .tar in the pda slot.
Just note, if you go to gingerbread, go back to stock with the one click. If you use the 3 button fix version you will guaranteed brick your phone.
Important to note that if you've flashed an I9000 based ROM your 3 button may have changed to vol up-home-power. If that doesn't work and you're on a 2.1 or 2.2 ROM then you've probably just lost the sbl for 3 button and need to reflash it.
You should always be able to get into download mode via hold down vol up and vol down and plugging in the USB cable, I've never lost that.
awesome thank you for putting my mind at ease,
if i flash the fix will i need to flash the fix every time i flash to a new froyo based rom?
hmm odd cause i seem to have lost download mode.
what i have been doing to get into DL mode is;
turn off the phone,
pull battery and sim (i dont have an external SD),
put battery back
hold vol up and vol down then plug in usb cable that is connected to a PC i will get a battery charging display on screen
once you flash it you should be good to flash whatever else on top of it.
one last thing,
in that thread i linked with the fix, the instructions say to take a PDA.tar file and a pit file which was added with the odin download, but the odin download is by itself no pit file, opening the PDA.tar file i can see the SBL.bin file so i am assuming that we may not need the pit file?
you dont need the pit. it is fine.
thank you, i'll give it a try next time a flash a new rom =)
i appreciate all the info guys =)

[q] no dl mode/no option to load from sd

I am hoping someone can help me out. Yesterday I was using Odin to flash Apex 10. I was loading the bootloaders when the usb cable was pulled out and I didnt have the battery cover on and the battery fell out. Now I cant get into download mode. I have pulled the battery a thousand times. Before this happened I was able to use the three buttons to get into download mode. I need to start the process all over but cant do anything without getting into download mode. I dont have a jig. I searched and saw where I could download the three button fix. When I use CWM and reboot to recovery it doesnt give me the option to install from SD card.
The phone works but when I turn it on the booting animation says Galaxy i9000. Im currently on 2.2...baseband I897UCKB2.
Can I use AIO toolbox to correct this problem? After messing up last night I'm a little nervous at this point.
Also could someone point me to the correct bootloader for the Captivate? I want to make sure I used the right one.
Thanks in advance and please dont flame me. I searched this forum and honestly what I found only confused me more.

Do not use the 3 button fix or u may hard brick ur phone.
The i897 gingerbread bootloaders link is in my signature below.
Right click and run as administrator the Odin 1st. Then...
To get in download mode try leaving out ur battery, connect usb end of cable to usb port in the back of desktop computer or 1st port on laptop, connect micro usb end to phone while holding volume down button only , replace battery and cover, Odin may recognize your phone now, if so flash the i897 booloaders. Set phone aside and wait, should not take long.
If you get the "phone ! computer firmware upgrade fail" screen, don't worry, just treat it as a download screen. If all this does not work, then u will need to make or buy a jig.
Do not flash the 3 button fix over this you will hard brick your phone
If u can boot your phone after all this thn you are one lucky guy, You messed while flashing th BL and your phone still works, If you have i9000 boot screen that means you have flashed the i9000 bootloaders.
After flashing the i9000 BL the combination for the DL and recovery chages to.
Volume down plus power= DL
Volume up plus power = Recovery
.
I swear I love both of you. I got the phone in download mode by volume dwn + power. I will see if I can accomplish what I set out to do last night.
