ok I am guess everyone in the forum is uber informed about all things smartphone.....
So basically I feel like someone playing dualing banjo's at a mensa meeting.
well now that the self-deprication is out of the way my questions I am hoping to get some answers to.
First of all I am considering getting the Xperia x1 through Rogers. Being canadian its my only choice other than paying an insane amount for an unlocked......
I am worried rogers has totally locked down the phone though. I have only scratched the surface of all the cool stuff that can be done with this phone.
Just glancing at the mod section of this forum made my head spin.
Anyways if anyone here has the rogers version of the x1 could you please let me know if its a shackled broken version of its unlocked stupid expensive self.
If not would it be a endurance trial to get it unlocked? From the tiny bit of research I have done so far I am pretty sure paying someone else to do it would be my only option.
Being able to do it myself would be a happy suprise though. Hell not having to unlock it at all would be the best suprise of all.....
Anyways thats enough of a rant for my first post. I really hope all you knowlegable people don't mind me picking your brain.....
Thanks in advance.
You don't need to unlock. Just Hard-SPL (there is a tutorial in the stickies at the beginning of the ROM forum) and then you can flash with any custom ROM you like.
There are also an abundance of cabs that you can use to customize your device in a variety of ways, whether you choose stock ROM or a custom one.
If you want to migrate to a different provider there are options to SIM unlock your phone, but if all you want is to get rid of Rogers garbage that is on your phone, read up on Hard-SPL and then look at some of the custom ROMs.
Hope this helps a little.
I will look up the Hard-SPL right away....
Though it sounds perfect I don't want to get my hopes up to high. If its to complicated and there is any chance of me bricking the x1 I don't know if it will be worth it.
Then again if I read the tutorial until my eyes bleed I should be able to do it blindfolded....
Anyways dude it more than helps its amazing I really appreciate the info. While I have your attention 2 more questions about the x1 if I could.
First does it double as a decent media player? I have been looking for one for a LONG time and having it combined with my phone would be convenient.
For movies, anime,tv shows and audio books.....just to name some media I would use it for.
And second can the X1 connect to any wireless internet source or do you have to have internet through your cell provider?
Thanks again. Cheers!
It's got Wi-Fi, so don't worry about that. You can tap into Wi-Fi same as you would on any laptop.
As far as media player... well that depends. It can play a lot of different file types by default. There is a Media Xperience Panel that organizes things pretty well (There are a lot of versions of this floating around, be sure to get a good one for you - took me a while). Unfortunately hardware acceleration only really seems to work in old-fashioned Windows Media Player on the device.
There are third-party software solutions like Kinoma and Core Player that are pretty and nice, but their performance may suffer on high-res videos.
I'd recommend trying different solutions. If you are trying to watch full WVGA (800X480) video you may want to launch with Windows Media Player (I hate it, but your video will look smooth and beautiful), but if you are going to be watching WQVGA (400X240) resolution or lower video many other choices could be good.
Sorry, if that part of the answer is long-winded, but I am trying to wind-up a lot of info I have accumulated on the subject into one post. For more detailed info you may want to search the forums. I know there is video conversion software and info here somewhere.
Some Xperia users have been very happy with video performance, others have not. So this is something that will likely be subjective.
Music, though, works great (I use bluetooth headphones) and it has a regular headphone jack, if you are so inclined to use it. I listen to all my podcasts from my Xperia, which I download off of my Wi-Fi connection at home. So no need to sync or transfer or anything.
High-Res screen on the Xperia also makes picture viewing very enjoyable.
Hope this answers your questions pretty well.
speakers
Just thought I would point out that while sound is great with headphones and fine for talking on the phone, the loudspeaker on the xperia isnt that good,
Also have you considered waiting for the x2?
it has a few software and hardware upgrades, but it will be a little pricy at first and XDA developers wont fully support it cause its not HTC manufactured.
Aside from that The X1 is a great phone, and the price these days is quite good. I have one and Im giving one to my father for christmas.
First of all thank you both for your input.
Reading stuff on the net always comes in second to getting info from people like you.
@Hannigan174 thanks for the honesty about the video. One plus side is though conversion is a pain I would do it. Another plus is I don't give a crap about high-res versions of stuff as long as its watchable. I have seen mixed things about youtube, but I would guess that there is a panel or rom that lets you watch it.
On the Music front its mostly audiobooks I listen to right now so the fact that it will those more than decently is very good.
@Hungry81 Right now I am using the w580i walkman phone. I don't know how the X1's loudspeaker would compare to the 580's....? Its not the end of the world if its not quite as good though.
And I am always thinking about waiting for the new and better thing....
But my 580 is REALLY showing its age and the x1 is very enticing.
But this does lead me to something else thats been nagging me.....
Rogers also carries the HTC Dream and the Magic. Would either of those compare to the X1?
I know they are completely different animals being WinMo and android but I am OCD about getting the best phone I can.
I wish rogers carried the Hero though, to me the Hero blows the Dream and Magic out of the water.
Anyways opinions on the X1 Vs the 2 HTC's would be appreciated. And thanks again for all the info you guys have already given me.
High Res screen on the X1, and all my Windows Mobile goodies. I would stick with X1.
Now if you like the Android interface, perhaps the Dream would be nice. I really like having a hardware keyboard so the Magic wouldn't be an option for me.
There is a lot more stuff for WinMo right now, and realistically this site makes any WinMo device more appealing than any other smartphone OS. As evidence you should look at the X2 software thread and how quickly they broke down that prototype and extracted all the goodies from it.
I got nothing against Android, and perhaps in a few years when it is more mature I might even migrate to Android. There are even Android development forums here, but the many WVGA apps and resources make the X1 the choice for me.
Keep in mind that what is best is very subjective, and the reasons for me liking my X1 might not outweigh benefits of another device for you.
In summation I chose X1 because:
X1 - More apps, hardware keyboard, WVGA resolution (pretty pretty screen )
Okay so I've recently come up with a little idea to make a series of videos of new and old roms in action to give people an idea of what the roms look and feel is. I've already made one for the SDK port in honeycomb but it was just thrown together in an hour so i never had sufficient time to edit the video to spec. But good things take time. So if you like this idea and want your rom or app or theme featured in the videos please don't hesitate to contact me, but be patient as it could take me some time to get everything together. Oh and very important this will only be for the N1 at the moment until i can get hold of a few more Android devices, That will only be for roms and themes. But if you want your app featured please email me or send me a PM on here and I'll get back to you asap.
Thanks.
Stu
[Edit] okay so I've how made 3 videos. One for the Miui-Au rom, One for the SuperAosp rom and one for the Honetcomb SDK port. Send in some requests guys.

Hello Everyone!
I never did flash gaming on my android phone. It just seemed to small and not to work for my big clunky hands. And I kind of forgot about it completely when I purchased my Xoom. Luckily I had a viewer point me out to one of his favorite flash games and I was surprised how great of an experience it was. It was a touched based flash game, work rather well in the browser, and was fun. This led me to want to ask this wonderful community what their favorite flash games are ?? As well as expose those who apparently were under a rock like me for this content. You can check out my video overview on a flash game as well.

Try nanaca crash. Its pretty good on the xoom.
Microsoft announces details of Windows Phone ‘Mango’
Check Videos of whats coming for NOKIA WP7 HERE
And whats New in Mango Video over here
Still more Detailed Videos over HERE
Thank u,
The third link doesnt work. please take a look at it.
Watching that video, I now understand why so many key business features are missing from WM7 and why its so focused on stalking your friends.
These developers have nothing better to do then talk to each other while playing xbox..
Still many needed features are missing.
I call this one a dud till HTC comes out with a sense interface like HD2 has
Mango
Just watched the mango vid.....aaaaaaand i really dont see whats going to be so different about it....i mean as far as the GUI is concerned it pretty much looks the same (with a few MINOR changes to things, from what i seen on the vid) MAYBE some functionality changes that cant be seen on the vid...but HD7 is a boring phone ..... its smooth (scrolliing and such) but lacks the excitment... all this MANGO talk...and the fact remains that your HD7 will STILL be that....a HD7...
the excitment will come once android becomes available to use and a possible dual boot... (dont want to totally X out WP7 )
just my 2 cents out of a dollar....
Hi guys, how are you?
Can someone tell me wich one of the above rom's is the best and why?
Thanks
I've just installed MIUI and while I am impressed with many aspects, I am decidedly let down.
The speed of it is excellent, very smooth and enjoy a number of features of being able to customize the lock screen background, etc easily, however I much preferred the ability I had in stock standard to customize my homescreen better.
I might be missing some things, however my market is crashing constantly, so am unable to see if I can install a new home launcher over top (although I suppose to a degree that negates the point of installing the rom). The biggest ap I used was Pure calander scrolling widget, which can't be used (AFAIK) in MIUI, so this has really taken a big effect on my view of the rom.
I am about to reset and try darkies mod, as my understanding it seems very stock, with speed increases and several features removed.
I'm also hopefully going to try out Cyanogen mod tonight/tomorrow depending if I have the time to play around with Darkies tonight
Hope this helps somewhat.

Yes, it help a lot... But one more question.
Can you make video calls in Miui? I use video call a lot with my parents and girlfriend so I don't wanna lose this feature...
Can't help you there. I've never used a video call in my life
--edit
In saying the above, if I wasn't such an elitist on exactly how I wanted my homescreen to look, then I'd be very happy with MIUI. I'm not putting it down at all, it's a fantastic rom, but it just doesn't give me what I want out of it

Eh, eh, eh. Thanks anyway!
I think I'll give MIUI rom a try...
I've used both, they all arguably great roms.
I'm currently used Darky, because of the lack of FM Radio in MIUI. I'm a Fm dead fan, kinda bad habit....
However if MIUI figure out a solution for FM Radio, or if I find out a decent radio player I will definitely throw Darky away. IMHO compare to Darky, MIUI is superior in every aspects. Before I thought MIUI is too Apple, but then I gave it a shot, and I absolutely love it! The launcher is incredible, the mobile traffic counter is fantastic, MIUI music and Gallery are amazing, especially the music player!
In my phone, MIUI quadrant point is even higher than darky (1788 vs 1550), tho it's sort of lag sometimes. However, MIUI is suck when it plays MKV files (no sound with my files), tho it can be solved by using Moboplayer). MIUI also use different camera softwares, thus you would miss Darky if you need to take panorama.
In conclusion, I believe if you don't need FM player, or not a photographer, you must give MIUI a shot
Darky's rom

Me either . The only prob is miui rom lacks a lot of features and I cant understand why... Video call, radio and so on... But in overall is the best rom I ever try in my galaxy s... What should I do?
I was on CM7 for one week, and I really enjoyed the look&feel of the whole ROM.
I was really sad going back to something sammy-based, but random phone-crashes, random non-working APN/wifi and the low battery life left me no choice.
I'm on Darky's 10.1 now, and I only thing I really miss is the AOSP calendar (TW-calendar sucks).
totally Darky's rom, as Miui change the layout of android
basically, Miui has its own layout...
or i should Miui is a "ios" base on Android

is there any themes that could bring back the Samsung SGS theme on top of Darky's 10.1?
