Ok i was an avid iPhone user for a while and had it jailbroken, cracked apps, etc. it was great games looked so beautiful and music player was awsome but wasnt as open source and always had to ssh for files and music through itunes. and especially no expandable memory i had 8 gb and i had 6.5 gb of music so you can imagine the little bit of space for apps i was constantly deleting. then one day my iphone got stolen and i decided i didn't want another one i wanted to try something new got the g1 rooted got a 16 gb card (yay) discovered hero and the possibility of so many images to flash its like endless i love my g1. My thing is why is it that the g1 has no good games (like the iphone crash bandicoot, sims, racing with accelerometer control, etc) market gui is decent love the appstore look and easier to navigate. Now some more questions. Is there anything like cydia for g1 or alternatives to market? And is the g1 capable of games like the iphone or are the iphones hardware specs like extremely better? Is there any games gonna be released for g1 that are actually fun? And is the lack of games and stuff for g1 due to the fact that the g1 hasnt been out long enough? answers would be much appreciated. especially market alternatives.
the answer to all of your questions is fairly simple and you pretty much answered it yourself at the end: the iphone has been out for several years and is on it's third incarnation presently.
the G1 is the original model and hasnt even hit the 1 year mark for being on the market. given time, you'll see massive improvements in games and the like as more and more people rally to android (there are 19 rumored android devices releasing on all four major US carriers this year alone).
as of right now, theres no real market alternatives. you can always browse cryket to see if theres anything you'd like to grab before having to load up the market on your phone and scroll through.

Wall of bad grammar critted for 1k.
There is no app like Cydia because there isn't much of a need for an alternative marketplace/repository. Anyone can install any apk they download from the net directly, without a jailbreak/root/whatever. As for games, I doubt the Android platform will ever have a better games library than the iPhone (unless the latter were to simply stop being produced) simply because the iPhone is a controlled single-device platform. It's a lot easier to make a nice looking high performance game when the specifications of your target device are fixed. That's not to say we won't see some impressive games on the Android platform later on. The G1/Dream hardware is also a bit lackluster compared to the iPhone incarnations available. Future devices will be beefier, but the likelihood of a games developer specifically targetting a small high-end segment rather than a mass-market device like the iPhone is slim.
Bottom line is if a great breadth of games is what you absolutely must have on your phone, then your best bet is still the iPhone. That would be my choice if I had time for or any interest in playing games on my phone.
I've been looking at posts regarding the Nook Color but there are still some details I can't quite work out.
My father has asked me to buy him a Nook Color and root it. (How often does a 71 year old luddite ask you to root something?) He primarily wants to use it as an eReader while on vacation, but he is keen to also have access to the Android market and his email. I've got him using TuneIn and NPR on his phone.
However I don't want to get it for him if the Nook Color is slow or buggy. After all, I'll be doing all the maintenance and we don't live anywhere near each other. Can anyone answer some questions to help me out?
- How responsive is it running the rooted stock with something like LauncherPro, or Nookie Froyo or CM7? Are screen taps recognized most of the time and do apps trod or fly?
- Do apps crash much? There are posts talking about instability in all the non-standard ROMs and different launchers, but not many posts about the stability people have. Do they work well enough for a non-techie to use?
- Any reasons why he shouldn't use a Nook? I don't want to set it up for him and then spend all my time answering questions. He knows Android well enough as he has a Droid 2.
- Any other relevant questions you think I'm missing?
Any info is appreciated. Thanks!
More experienced users could answer your questions better than I could. I'm just wondering what a luddite is.
I would think that once you have it set up for him if you had rooted it as 2.1 it would be fine, until the B&N 2.2 upgrade. Mine is not buggy nor crash-y. But you'd have to re-set him up after the upgrade.
I use 2.1 rooted, but have played around with froyo and CM7. I like that 2.1 maintains all of the barnes and noble functionality so I can buy and read books with the B&N interface just like stock. I can read magazines, etc.
I have a ton of apps and none crash, no tap lag but the corners of the screen are notoriously un-responsive. In fact I have had no issues with 2.1 rooted whatsoever and would never have known that this is not how it came out of the box.
No flash on 2.1 if that is an issue, but if he has a droid phone I wouldn't really call him a luddite. My MIL can't use a mouse or manage her digital camera- THAT is a luddite.
My biggest gripe is battery life and that is just crap. I have to keep turn wifi on and off when I want it to get more than a days worth of light use out of it. And even doing that I have to fully charge it every other day. That has been kind of an issue with me as this is a hybrid device, so I want it as a e-reader in bed and an android wifi device all day, so the only way for it to work for me is if I charge it on my bedstand everynight.
Stock root for now. When the update hits, he may well be happy with that. Sounds like there will be more app access then.
The touchscreen should be fine for him, as good or better than my Eris.

This is the only thing I'd worry about. When the 2.2 update comes out you'll likely need physical access to the device to re-root it (assuming the 2.2 update doesn't create other issues oin rooted NC's).
I have no stability or performance issues with CM7 + Launcher Pro. The stock kernal even supports moderate overclocking (about 15%), if desired.
The corners are not quite as sensitive to touch as the rest of the screen, but I certainly wouldn't rate it as unresponsive... It's fairly uncommon that mine doesn't register the first touch there.
One issue, depending on his vision, may be the small font sizes at the default pixel density settings. This can be remedied by increasing the value, but altering it can break some apps, causing them to render incorrectly.
You may want to wait for a non-development build of CM7 to arrive, however, as improvements are still appearing at a rapid pace.

I'm so glad someone else had the same first though! I looked it up on wikipedia:
"In modern usage, "Luddite" is a term describing those opposed to industrialisation, automation, computerisation or new technologies in general."
Sounds like a lot of people I know.....
A tongue in cheek reply!!
Since I am a 78 year old former luddite, I feel qualified to offer some advice. I rooted my nook the first day I had it but became addicted and tried most every ROM available on this site. I really like CM7 but it still requires a bit of fiddling and it does seem very slow compared to the rooted stock. I,ve gone back to the rooted stock 2.1 for a number of reasons. First, I've got the Kindle app and most of my on-time is spent reading either BN or Kindle books. I do check for the grandkids e-mails a couple of times a day and that's about it. I have a basket full of 2GB microSDs with photos, audible books, etc, etc, and like the ease of changing to whatever I want. For my usage, the rooted stock is probably the best alternative. Of course I do have my andromeda 1.2 based Captivate for everything else I want to do. I don't think anyone knows for sure what will happen when (or if) B&N really does provide an OTA upgrade to 2.2. Maybe a rooted stock won't upgrade and if it does it may have to be rerooted. I still have CM7 on a micro SD just in case. By the way, I had three semesters of computerese in 1971--1974 while working on my PhD and my first computer was an instant hernia producing 40 pound "portable". To me it sounds like your dad would get along just fine if you'll just root it and introduce him to this marvelous website with it's great devs.

Without question all '-ites' should get Nook Colors...
Troglodites, Mennonites, Frenchites, Americanites and of course my Luddite brothers and sisters as well...
But seriously, I told a newb friend of mine, who is very interested in Android, to get one and play with it. Many, many others and I all learned by playing around and making tons of mistakes and asking questions of others. Hands on is the way to go.
note: Google/search XDA with any questions before posting; otherwise you'll get scarcastic responses that won't be polite.
Good luck m8!
I'm using the NC with 2.1 and absolutely love it. I have a lot of apps. love the B&N features, love the whole android experience I can get on the NC.
I'm a 52 year old grandma who has found a fun hobby learning to root her NC and load android on her HD2 phone. I figure if I can learn to do it, anyone can!
LauncherPro Plus is my launcher of choice. I have tried ADW and Zeam. I like the scrollable widgets, facebook widget and the many home screens with LP. LP works great on my NC.
I use my NC for staying organized (calendar, contacts and email - all synced to my google account), listening to podcasts (podtrapper), listening to audio books (Audible and local library), listening to favorite music (pro amp), keeping up with the news & blogs (pulse news reader, news and weather widget), facebook (launcherpro widgets), reading books and magazines (Nook and Kindle apps), crossword puzzles (shortyz + NC native), playing games, keeping cute pics of the grandkids to show off, lots of educational apps to play with the grandkids, etc. etc. How did I live without one ????
My screen gets buggy once in awhile, but it's usually after playing Angry Birds or something that is heavy on using resources. But I rarely get any force closes. You Tube does go wonky once in awhile, and I have had to clear cache once on my gmail, but install Titanuium Backup and walk him thru clearing the cache. Works. Every time.
My battery life is what I would call decent. A couple of days - depending on what I am doing. Even with wi-fi running in the background. I have never had a problem getting wi-fi to stay conncected. Battery lasts a lot longer on my NC than on my HD2 running android.
I walked my daughter thru the rooting process over the phone when she got her own NC. She not a 'techie' in any sense of the word. This was about 3 months ago and she hasn't had any problems with her NC and now she is another NC/Android convert.
All this boils down to my saying that I really think your 72 yo 'luddite' would really like the NC. And I think the NC should 'behave itself' enough for him to get good use out of it.
Everywhere where there's a discussion about Flash player it just gets over crowded by Apple fanbois or something because it suddenly gets overrun with hate on how crap Flash is. Yet I bet if they were allowed Flash Player on the iPhone and Android weren't (you can still manually install) then they'd be touting it as a feature. I just think what is wrong to have choice? Why must Operating Systems now become about being dictated how to use it and why features you like are bad? If you don't not like Flash Player then you do not have to use it or install it, I don't see how it impacts you and why you'd wish for people who like it not to have the option. MOD EDIT.
I've got a now dated Galaxy S2 and I'm using the last generic Gingerbread firmware for it and have no speed issues. I'm using this firmware because I do not like ICS or JB and that is ok, with Android I'm allowed the choice. I can run BBCiPlayer's desktop website which is Flash based on my phone and even streaming over HSPA+ with Three and I have no performance issues. I've never experienced Flash crashing any more than anything else on any phone, in fact I remember lots of stuff crashing on my old iPhone 4 which was meant to be so much better and more stable. Flash seems no more unstable than anything else, I think people just love to jump on the hate wagon. Obviously the Desktop Flash experience on a mobile is not the best when it comes to UI, however performance wise it works fine and I'm happy to have it.
When I had the iPhone 4 (my first smart phone) I bought it because it was praised as the best one at the time and everyone was singing its praises. However I became more and more aware of what I couldn't do with it as Apple didn't want me to. The one thing that bothered me was how many site apps I had to use to watch video content and even mobile sites. These sites are never good and I just want the Desktop option with Flash Player. Now I know this is still the case today as I try my friends iPad 2 and lots of the sites I want to visit like Youtube, BBCiPlayer and maybe some efukt for lols still use Flash, Youtube has made a leap to HTML5 but still lots of videos are Flash only. I don't know when HTML5 is meant to set the world on fire, Apple have been going on about it since as long as I can remember and it still hasn't become the standard. I just don't see why you wouldn't allow people just to install Flash Player so they can have the best experience.
I know Adobe have stopped support but that really is just don't to the resistance against it from Apple. I used to see loads of happy reviews on the Android marketplace for Flash Player, lots of people want it more than crazed fanbois. Also why not just have an advanced option on these modern Operation systems like Android where you can freely install stuff you want from a third party source? People who are clueless wont know about it and people who know what they're doing can just have a warning saying Warranty void or something and sorted.
I just want Flash Player, it has made the internet what it is today. I don't know what issues people have with it but I use it everyday and have done for many many years and relative to the stability of operations systems in their time, Flash has been no more unstable than anything else. I've not had Flash crash since I can remember on Windows, Chrome is a great platform for it at least, I dunno about other browsers. Android it's perfectly smooth too....
I just don't get the hate.
I also like flash very much, but it has been decided it will not be supported anymore, so it's ending. There are and will be better alternatives (I hope).
Flash is a dieing platform its very bloated and thus has never worked well on android.
The likes of HTML5 gives much better performance and being modular will be a ever expanding platform.
Its just how things happen the web is a ever changing platform and there's little flash can do that can tbe done better else where.

That is pretty much true. I will add my two cents.
1. Flash is proprietary. You have to buy tools and compiler to develop. What is more there is only one official flash player. Others were created thanks to reverse engineering and are not very good.
2. Flash is terribly optimized. What I mean is the compiled code is very inefficient.
3. Language. Who would like to learn and use ActionScript if there is mature and popular JavaScript?
Flash really shouldn't get hate. Why? It is completely optional. Turn off plugins from browser settings and you have a phone completely free of it. If your phone didnt came with it, and you downloaded it yourself, uninstall it and there!
So there really is no reason to hate on it so much

I am a fan of flash.
A sad thing is that there is no moment in between - many services that rely on flash are not yet switched to html5.

+1. I still like flash a lot. As per growing trend, a lot of websites are now converting to HTML5 but it will be a while before flash becomes completely obsolete.
I don't know, I think the general hate towards the platform was started by Apple users who were mad that Android got flash but they never did. Sure, flash is a locked down platform, but so is Apple's ecosystem. HTML5 is supposed to be the open successor to flash, but for DRM purposes I see most content is still done with flash. A lot of the flash content we want to view on our phones is actually made for desktop users only, so there is no reason for site owners to want to switch to HTML5.
In my opinion flash was to the point where performance on mobile devices wasn't as much of an issue anymore. HD Youtube videos play in flash without noticeable frame loss on dual core devices. Device hardware had finally caught up to the point where it could render desktop based flash content without choking. Awkward interaction with flash elements in a mobile browser was fixed by a full screen option which works nicely.
Many people are misinformed as to why Adobe discontinued flash on mobile. It wasn't Apple or Google's fault, Adobe simply decided to stop focusing on flash for mobile and to move on to newer technologies like HTML5. What I don't get is why they are still supporting Adobe Air on mobile since its based off flash. They announced in late 2011 that ICS would be the last version they would support flash on. Google Chrome first showed up on Android in early 2012, so it wasn't Chome that killed flash like some think.
Luckily Adobe is maintaining download links on their site for flash apks and is still doing security updates for now.
I don't get why you'd end flash to work on HTML5? Why not just make Flash better?
I don't care if something is dying or not supported anymore. When it is still used on more sites than the nearest competitor (HTML5) then it is sitll number one and you need to support it.
I would be interested in an iPhone or Windows phone, however the locked down OS not giving you any options like to have flash on your phone kills them for me. I'll always choose android because the software is superior as a result of the third party. You can produce an OS but you need it to be open to be successful, IOS is a mess because it is closed, it has been a mess for many years since everyone caught up to Apple. You need an open OS because the people always come up with way better software than the official company. Innovation is what you didn't know you even wanted but it makes such a difference, you don't get that from corps.

1 - Wrong you can download the Flex or AIRSDK for free ,and use free tools to create Flash/AIR.
2 - Wrong again, Clearly you haven't used flash recently. Stage3D is amazing:
Is this bad performance? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EBxd2tFEvU You can try it out if you find it and download it.
3 -, JS is really an old language without real OOP language like Actionscript or Java. So classes are prototypes which is a very old and obsolete concept when there are Objects and Classes out there....
To get an idea: JS is to JAVA (or AS3) as BASIC to C++ .
You must be one of the fanboys mentioned on the first post.
Seriously dude, don't talk about things you don't know about.
@spunker:
Flash is within AIR within an APP. Means apple store can sell it and is happy about it. HTML5 cool stuff doesn't work on most low end phones, (just like flash!) And to be honest Flash was capable of doing many things that HTML5 is NOT YET able to do. HTML5 was sold as the technology of the future but I have been there years ago, and I will rather changing career if i had to go back to that tecnology. (How many days wasted in problems with compatibility with browsers...)
I'm a stage3D developer and I don't think is slow. The old Flash system (which is still heavily used by designers, not coders) is slow, time line, vectors, and tons of layers made Flash flexible and accessible but very slow performance. Now with stage3D, flash is just code and bitmaps with GPU acceleration. This means it runs like any other SDK (like coronaSDK or Unity). Same performance!
I always try to be objective, and Apple fans are not. Is like a massive religion. Lucky, I am atheist and I can see sects very easily.
Hi There Guys,
I'm keen to get involved in the CM10 and JB development projects, downloading and trying out the new roms when they become a little more full of features (i.e. sound/mic/video)
Right now, I'm using OaTs CM9 ICS build and it works a charm, especially flash video which I can stream from a number of sites wherever I go. This feature is so so useful for me as it negates my laptop need on the move.
Has anyone managed to install/sideload Flash on their CM10 Touchpad device and how does it work? Is it smooth, or really Jumpy?
Any info would help me decide whether to make the jump!
Cheers - Ed
When flash works it has performance nearly as good as CM9. But when I tested it out there were times when it acted quite unstable and the flash video would get all distorted looking. Not sure if this is caused by the ROM not being a stable build or if flash is this way on JB.
If you use flash quite a bit, you may want to stay on CM9.
Adobe flash is no longer supported and must be sideloaded via an apk download from Adobe.
As a fellow flashaholic, why not try it yourself?
With a good backup, and the apk, how long would it take for you to evaluate?
Google Adobe Flash Android and get it from them.
Alternatively, you can send it to yourself by using an apk share tool like myappsharer from your CM9.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
I'm thinking this is more of a graphics driver issue with the Touchpad at this point, as I've seen the same sort of distortion that flash elements were showing in other parts of the OS. It basically looks like a bunch of horizontal lines. I tried forcing GPU rendering and it made no difference. Guess CM9 will have to do for now, but the buttery UI of CM10 is hard to leave.
Thanks guys - I know I could have tried it myself but I wanted to hear others experience first.
I really want to upgrade to JB but i'll hold off till the other issues are sorted, but like I said, I find flash so useful right now for watching videos that I'll take the advice above and stick with CM9 for a bit
I'll post my thoughts here when I do upgrade for others benefit too!
All,
My mom's birthday was coming up and I was going to get her a tablet. She doesn't have a computer and still uses a flip phone just for reference how nontechnical she is.
With new new price of the Nook HD+ it seems like a great buy however how is it in the stock form? I know there is going to be some lag but is it at least tolerable? I watched some YouTube video reviews and it seems when it was first released it was kind of bad but some of the newer ones looked much better.
I know you are all going to say just put CM 10.1 on it and if I was going to use it for myself I would 100% do that however it always seems even at their best roms have some idiocracies of their own that we don't mind but to an average user would seem annoying.
What you guys think in stock form do you think someone would be ok with it if just using the tablet for basic browsing, reading, and netflix is this a good choice?
For a non-tech person, running just plain stock with no mods should work good. It is fairly smooth and stable. Since she has never had a device like this before, she will never notice its shortcomings compared to other Android devices. Go for it!

Thanks for the quick reply! I just didn't want to buy her a piece of junk. Someone bought my Great Aunt (she is 95!) some Walgreen's special android tablet. She was so excited when I went over her house for dinner to show it to me. It was running Ice Cream Sandwich and the thing lagged like I have never seen android before and I just felt bad and smiled and said "wow this is great".
While at least B&N is a reputable company I wanted something that is usable and wont frustrate her to and also cutting down on the inevitable tech support calls I will get.

Stock is a good choice. I just set one up for my wife to use and kept it stock. I figured the easier-to-use Nook interface would be more beneficial than the raw Android interface.
After the two automatic updates, you have all the apps, including Play Store, so just keep it at that. It's a very powerful and beautful tablet (especially for the price!).
Happy Birthday to your Mom!

I bought mine last week and am running it stock.
I have used numerous custom ROMs on numerous devices but I don't plan on putting any custom ROM on the Nook (for now at least).
My impressions:
First - The screen is fantastic!
I can't say enough about the screen; Full HD (1920x1280) resolution with a 9" size makes this a 'Retina' display (if compared to the iPad) - 257ppi (Nook HD+) vs. 264ppi (iPad).
Google Play Store is installed on first boot (system updates itself when turned on). With full store access, it is a full-featured Android tablet, not an e-reader.
The dual-core CPU is on the mid-range side; however it runs the tablet really well. Since the usage is normal browsing and/or reading there should be no problems with it.
I have downloaded Holo Launcher HD and use that as my interface. This gets rid of the B&N interface and allows resizing of the screen grid, widgets etc.
I use the stock reader to read my ePubs and actually prefer it over the ones available in the market.
Adobe handles PDFs and some comic books. With the high-resolution screen, I am able to view an entire page without zooming in.
The Zinio app allows me to download magazines for free from my public library account. These look great too.
There is some lag when viewing PDFs and magazines; the screen takes a second or two to focus when turning pages. Of course, it depends on what is being displayed too.
Angry birds works fine; haven't tested it with any resource-intensive games.
Skype runs all the time on my HD+ and have had multiple conversations with family around the world with no connection issues.
All this would be nothing if not for the price. the close-out price of $150 makes this an incredible value. You can buy 3 of these for the price of one iPad.
Do not hesitate.
Cheers.
