With all of the really good roms now a days...that is..
1) Rooting...doing a back up of the stock rom..and then using that backup to return to stock without having to flash through Odin?
I'm guessing here...but..wouldn't you have to have disable any lag fix..going back to rfs..disable any voodoo..changing any oc/uc settings to stock..prior to doing this ?
2) Pulling a copy of the entire EFS folder from stock to your PC before doing any flashing new roms and then prior to un-rooting dropping it back in with root explorer...Won't this do the same thing without having to use a terminal or hex editor to have the original imei # and product code #? If #1 is a complete copy..would #2 be even needed ?
Just looking for a easy way to do this on a brand new phone
Thanks

1) You should basically be doing this everytime you flash a new rom. I've flashed my cappy probly 50 times and everytime except once I went back to stock first. 0 issues -- the 1 time I didn't have a pc at hand and had to disable the lagfix then flash rom. But. going back to stock with Odin3 1 click is easy as long as you can get into download mode. Make sure you can get into dload mode before even attempting to flash a rom.
You only have to disable lagfix if you are not going back to stock prior to flashing a new rom (don't ever flash a rom over another rom without first disabling the lagfix or going back to stock).
2) I never backup my sdcard when flashing rom or master clear (I'm lazy I guess and don't want to wait for the files to transfer). I also keep update.zip as the clockwork recovery update.zip file. So after going back to stock, all I have to do is go into stock recovery and reinstall packages to install clockwork recovery, then I can flash the new rom and any add ons.

I guess I am wording this wrong...I know how to flash..and I know how to odin back...but I was curious if I could eliminate doing some of that by just using the back up of the stock rom that is rooted..I don't think that can be done with out flashing stock via Odin first (because of the kernels if not using a Captivate kernel )...but if you are using one... I haven't read anything about...cause I really don't know..
I am trying to see if all the EFS files are replaced with the correct #s without having to do and terminal work or use a hex editor..once the back up from Rom manager is put back on and used..Just trying to make a real easy check list about it..

I guess I got lucky cuz one day I was too lazy and away from the PC, but I have a couple of ROMs on my SD so I just flashed Assonance on top of Perception and worked fine.. that is the only time I did that, I always go back to stock with one click ODIN before flashing a new rom

the lagfixes may not have been installed...i think you have to manually install them with the roms you mentioned
Ok, i have read many posts, the one from ODIN and ask people, watched videos, and nothing. Im starting in the rooting process, im currently on Phoenix 2.5, before i flashed this rom i made a backup rom with Clockwork, i decided to restore to stock using clockwork, but it failed on me and i fear that my phone was bricked. I flashed again the phoenix rom, but i want to return to my stock rom, but i dont know why, i just want to flash darkys rom, but i dont know how to restore back to stock, if i use odin by default i have to do the master clear, please help me, i dont want to be stuck on this rom.

#1: Are you disabling Lagfix before flashing? If not, that may be your problem.
#2: Prepare to be flamed for posting in the devs section with a Q&A post.

POST IN THE RIGHT SECTION (I guess I had to do that, right??)
To answer your question - Gr8danes is right, you should be disabling your lagfix to restore your backup first.
Do this by going into your /sdcard/voodoo directory - Create a folder named "disable-lagfix" and reboot your phone. You will hear the robotic voice reconverting your file system - this will take about 3-5 minutes.
Then proceed with flashing your stock backup.
If that fails, you will have to use ODIN One Click to revert back to Eclair 2.1

So as long as the file system is restored (voodoo disabled) you CAN nandroid back to stock? Awesome.
thanks a lot, and sorry for posting in the wrong section.
Suppose everything fails, when i decide to use ODIN, do i need to do the master clear?

no you do not need to master clear
also, the nandroid doesnt backup the KERNEL or the MODEM so you will likely get a bootloop after trying to restore your stock backup. in order to get back to stock, the best option is ODIN.
im using clockwork, i did the backup with clockwork

yeah, clockwork doesnt backup/restore the stock kernel+modem for you (one of its downfalls on this phone it seems). thats a manual process. the other option is to use the JH7 stock+rooted rom, thats designed for clockwork
But if i disable the lagfix, and do the restore using clockwork, it will fail? I MUST USE ODIN?? If i have to use ODIN, whats the point of doing a backup stock rom?

dont know of any links. i just know in my testing that is what happened.
if you look at a backup done in clockwork, there are the following files created:
cache.img
data.img
datadata.img
nandroid.md5
system.img
if you are flashing from a 2.2 rom to a 2.1 backup, you will get caught in a bootloop because you still have the kernel from 2.2, as cwm doesnt backup the kernel for our phones. if you flash a 2.1 kernel, via clockwork, or odin, your backup will boot up, but you will probably get FC's on a lot of things, because the modem is still a 2.2 modem, and causes instabilities. if you then flash a 2.1 modem, your backup will boot up without any issues. the best way to deal with this is to keep a 2.1 kernel and 2.1 modem CWM flashable zips on your sd card alongside your nandroid backup, flash the modem and kernel, then restore the backup.

It backs up apps and settings, but it isn't meant for restoring firmware versions.
If you just want to run Darky's then just flash it and skip the whole returning to stock step. It's really not necessary.

You should use the option in cwm recovery for WIPE DATA/SYSTEM RESTORE before you do, but yes.

Yes, u don't have to restore stock first before flashing another rom, but like said above, make sure to do a factory reset in cwm..
As for odin, you don't have to master clear either, you can use either odin one click or download a stock rom from samfirmware.com and use regular odin...

Here are the install instructions from the first post of the Darky's thread:
HOW TO FLASH
Place the ROM on the root of your SD card.
Backup your apps using Titanium Backup.
Open ROM Manager (Downloadable from the market)
Choose "Install ROM from SD card". If after you flash and you have problems like force closes and you can't receive calls, wipe data/cache.
Let the phone sit for 5-10 minutes after booting.
Be happy.

That's pretty much how I've done it with all the ROMs I've used for the last couple of months, except that I boot to recovery mode to choose the ROM and start the install.
ok, thanks a lot guys, i spent all my thanks for today, but the conclusion is that i can flash darkys rom on top of phoenix, restoring back to stock will be if i want to take it for warranty or something like that right?

That's my opinion. The install script formats and deletes everything anyway, so going back to stock is superfluous. Some people disagree, but as per my other post, the Darky's instructions say nothing about flashing stock.
I went a couple of months without going back to stock and in that time I flashed various versions of Cognition, Darky's, di11igaf, Assonance, Perception, Axura, Phoenix, Doc's, Serendipity and probably others I've forgotten. I only flashed stock the other day because I sent my phone back to Samsung to see if I can get one with working GPS.
Scenario:
- I'm running Phoenix 4 ROM
- I want to try another ROM
- I have a copy of the JH7_OTA-1.zip
Can I just use ClockworkMod Recovery to flash the JH7_OTA ROM, then do a master clear from the phone and then apply any ROM I want?
Would that not accomplish the same thing as putting the phone in download mode and doing a stock restore via ODIN, followed by a Master Clear, and then flashing any ROM?
Can someone clear this up for me because it seems that both methods accomplish the same thing. They restore your phone to factory stock ROM as it's suggested by majority of the ROM before applying them.
Thanks
You can go from one rom to another without flashing stock.
I just went from doc jpy base to andromeda armani base. All I did was disable lag fix and kernel tweaks then flashed
I did so knowing I had odin just in case
What mcord11758 said except you don't actually need to disable anything. Just flash.
So that's the confusing part because:
Cognition ROM used to saynow there is just a DL link)
"flash back to I897UCJF6 (Recommended)"
and
How to flash PHOENIX Roms:
"1. BACK UP!!!
2. Use Odin One click to Flash Stock
2a. Wait for it to reboot and then re-enable debugging, hook phone back up to pc and Master Clear"
I got the concept that if running any lagfix it's best to disable it when updating the same ROM to a newer version but when doing a factory ROM it wipes out the ROM contents including the file-system format be it EXT4/EXT3 back to the Samsung RFS.
I would love to hear from one of the developers but I couldn't ask this question in the Dev Forum due too my n00b posting status.
Thanks for anyone who takes the time to provide some insight.
Phoenix and cognition both use ext 4 filing and the clockwork recovery built in understand it.
You have no less risk flashing jh7. in essence you are doing the same thing
flashing stock was more necessary when recovery could not understand ext 4. Today you can change to three different kernels in one day without ever disabling a lagfix

The partitions get formatted either way (unless it's now wipe, in which case I guess data and datadb don't). If are running ext4 and your new kernel supports ext4 then why disable it?

Thanks, that was the answer I was looking form I didn't exactly understand that the restriction was the recovery rom. It makes sense.
Does the nandroid bu via cwm contain bootloaders? Just want to know, if I have GB boots, if I can restore a stock 2.2 bu without probs. I know I would first have to flash a 2.2 based rom, but should I do a one click before I restore?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
The way I understand nandroid backups is 2.1 to 2.1, 2.2 to 2.2 etc.
What you are asking may work since some 2.2 roms will run on the 2.3 bootloaders......but do you really want to run the risk of bricking your phone? Either way better safe than sorry. Just my opinion.
Nandroid backs up the system and data areas, so doesn't address things such as bootloaders, kernel, and modem. I have gone back and forth from gingerbread to froyo, so it can be done. I am always on I9000 roms, so the modem is always compatible. I do need to flash a new kernel before updating, which I have done in Odin, with the auto reboot unchecked. Then I button combo to recovery, and restore.
In theory, you can flash a new kernel with SGS kernel flasher, and go into recovery and restore, and avoid PC entanglements, but I haven't done so.
hi everyone
i start flash custom roms couple days ago, trying out "temasek's UNOFFICIAL BUILD RC1-94" everything work great, just some of the .apk was not working, so i decide to go back to stock roms, i thought it be simple process restore it backup, but adter it restore LG logo keep boot and restart. so i start reading found this thread i try it out, load it install this zip file,

Yes - that happened to me also. My first "bad" experience with flashing
from what i read CM7 running ext4, stock runing ext3 right?
so now i'm back with stock running froyo, i still have my backup files on with sd card. Do i root and install rom manager then install Back2Ext3, and final running restore? will this restore back to my original state since i backup using cwm to backup.
thank guy
yes, cm7 uses ext4 system mount. i just use a zip file which i flash from recovery if i need to get back to ext3.
here it is btw if you are on stock froyo and want to restore stock gingerbread (if i understood you right) you dont need to use back to ext3 again, just restore your back up.

Restore stock backup from CM needs to flash an ext4-backto-ext3 zip with cwm, what a pity you overwrite cwm with stock recovery.
Now you should try to rescue your phone with SmartFlash, finally consider nvflash method.
