Do I have to flash back to stock?

Hi,
I am currently on the Darky v7.0 and I wanted to flash to 7.0.2
Do I just copy the rom in the sd folder and flash using rom manager just as i did before?
or do i have to switch back to stock 2.1 (rogers) and then flash 7.0.2?
This will be my second time flashing.
Please advice.

I too am curious why we are told to revert back to 100% stock before every time we change a rom. Why can't we just use Clockwork Recovery to wipe data/factory reset just like we do with every other Android phone?

samsung, in their infinite wisdom, decided rfs was the best filestructure to use for this phone. some roms change that to ext4 with voodoo, some roms rely on ULF to convert to ext4 and some dont convert anything.
ODIN is the user-friendly way to wipe everything back to stock...completely. if you remember to revert any lagfix (voodoo, ULF) then load your rom, it will work fine.
HOWEVER, there are so many people that dont remember to do that, its easier to flash back to stock rather than troubleshoot what could have possibly happened during their flash
personally, i have found that it takes just as long to revert the lagfix as it does to use ODIN....so rather than hoping that my new flash isnt corrupted in some way by my old flash, i flash back to stock. takes me 5 minutes total. as long as you keep a copy of the CWM update.zip on your sdcard, there is not even a reason to boot back into stock and root/setup/install rom manager, etc.

Thank you, that's the answer I was looking for. I already noticed that CWM can be flashed through an update.zip, so if I'm currently running the stock rom I don't have to ODIN and wipe data, do I? I can just flash CWM, nandroid, then go ahead and flash whatever I want?
Then NEXT TIME I flash something else I'll have to ODIN first.
Or does the user data already present in the stock rom make enough of a difference that I should ODIN anyway?
Phone is my gf's so I would really like to have a nandroid of her setup exactly as it is now so we can go back if she doesn't like Cognition, or whatever rom we decide to flash.

you are correct in assuming that if you are running stock currently, you do not have to odin first
if you remember to revert any lagfix that may have been applied (depends on rom) you wont have to ODIN
make a nandroid of her current setup.
now this is where it gets tricky. i just played around with doing this last night actually:
if you go from 2.1 to 2.2 or higher, you cannot just flash back to 2.1 nandroid restore. the nandroid doesnt backup or restore your modem and kernel
going backwards to 2.1, you will want to flash a 2.1 kernel, and modem prior to restoring your nandroid backup and vice versa if you make a nandroid of 2.2 and want to go back to it from 2.1
if you keep clockwork flashable versions of such needed kernels and modems as well as a nandroid of the original setup and the cwm update.zip file on your sdcard, you will never need odin...unless there is a major malfunction. this can all be done in CWM, but as i said, the noob-friendly, and surefire way to get a fresh install is ODIN. i dont think any other company has something like this available to flash back to stock, so the methods used on the roms in the galaxy s phones are slightly different than the roms for htc or motorola devices. to me, i think this is a major win for us, in that most things are easily recoverable using a windows tool

That makes sense, thanks! Over in HTC-land we call them radios instead of modems, and kernel/spl/radio all have to be compatible. Most are compatible with each other so there is seldom a need to flash around.
So what I gather from your post is that if she starts on stock 2.1 and I flash cwm, then flash Cognition (2.2 rom) I will most likely need to update the modem to match? Or is that only the case with stock roms?

most all the custom roms you will find will flash a kernel and modem that match and work properly with that rom
it really only applies to nandroid backups going from 2.1 to 2.2 and vice versa

So you're saying when you flash the rom it will flash the correct kernel and modem as part of update/install script?
So basically I just need to install CWM, flash the rom, and not worry about the rest?

yep
you dont need to worry about the rest until it comes time to flash to something else
there are a few options when that time comes:
use ODIN to restore to stock, then flash the next rom of your choosing
revert lagfix (if applied from the current rom you are running), then flash next rom of your choosing
if going back to a 2.1 NANDROID, not custom rom, then you will either need to odin, then flash.
or
flash 2.1 compatible kernel+modem and then restore your nandroid

Got it. That all makes sense except for the kernel. Shouldn't that be included in the nandroid? I know the modem probably resides on a separate partition...

the nandroid doesnt backup the kernel OR the modem as far as i know. either that or it doesnt flash them on the restore...

At least with HTC the kernel is part of the Rom and IS included in nandroids.

[Q] Restore Stock Rom

Ok, i have read many posts, the one from ODIN and ask people, watched videos, and nothing. Im starting in the rooting process, im currently on Phoenix 2.5, before i flashed this rom i made a backup rom with Clockwork, i decided to restore to stock using clockwork, but it failed on me and i fear that my phone was bricked. I flashed again the phoenix rom, but i want to return to my stock rom, but i dont know why, i just want to flash darkys rom, but i dont know how to restore back to stock, if i use odin by default i have to do the master clear, please help me, i dont want to be stuck on this rom.

#1: Are you disabling Lagfix before flashing? If not, that may be your problem.

POST IN THE RIGHT SECTION (I guess I had to do that, right??)
To answer your question - Gr8danes is right, you should be disabling your lagfix to restore your backup first.
Do this by going into your /sdcard/voodoo directory - Create a folder named "disable-lagfix" and reboot your phone. You will hear the robotic voice reconverting your file system - this will take about 3-5 minutes.
Then proceed with flashing your stock backup.
If that fails, you will have to use ODIN One Click to revert back to Eclair 2.1

So as long as the file system is restored (voodoo disabled) you CAN nandroid back to stock? Awesome.

no you do not need to master clear
also, the nandroid doesnt backup the KERNEL or the MODEM so you will likely get a bootloop after trying to restore your stock backup. in order to get back to stock, the best option is ODIN.

yeah, clockwork doesnt backup/restore the stock kernel+modem for you (one of its downfalls on this phone it seems). thats a manual process. the other option is to use the JH7 stock+rooted rom, thats designed for clockwork

But if i disable the lagfix, and do the restore using clockwork, it will fail? I MUST USE ODIN?? If i have to use ODIN, whats the point of doing a backup stock rom?

dont know of any links. i just know in my testing that is what happened.
if you look at a backup done in clockwork, there are the following files created:
cache.img
data.img
datadata.img
nandroid.md5
system.img
if you are flashing from a 2.2 rom to a 2.1 backup, you will get caught in a bootloop because you still have the kernel from 2.2, as cwm doesnt backup the kernel for our phones. if you flash a 2.1 kernel, via clockwork, or odin, your backup will boot up, but you will probably get FC's on a lot of things, because the modem is still a 2.2 modem, and causes instabilities. if you then flash a 2.1 modem, your backup will boot up without any issues. the best way to deal with this is to keep a 2.1 kernel and 2.1 modem CWM flashable zips on your sd card alongside your nandroid backup, flash the modem and kernel, then restore the backup.

It backs up apps and settings, but it isn't meant for restoring firmware versions.
If you just want to run Darky's then just flash it and skip the whole returning to stock step. It's really not necessary.

You should use the option in cwm recovery for WIPE DATA/SYSTEM RESTORE before you do, but yes.

Yes, u don't have to restore stock first before flashing another rom, but like said above, make sure to do a factory reset in cwm..
As for odin, you don't have to master clear either, you can use either odin one click or download a stock rom from samfirmware.com and use regular odin...

i didnt understood your instructions, i just see and option that says wipe data/facory reset, what do i do to install darkys rom, while still on phoenix?

Here are the install instructions from the first post of the Darky's thread:
HOW TO FLASH
Place the ROM on the root of your SD card.
Backup your apps using Titanium Backup.
Open ROM Manager (Downloadable from the market)
Choose "Install ROM from SD card". If after you flash and you have problems like force closes and you can't receive calls, wipe data/cache.
Let the phone sit for 5-10 minutes after booting.

That's pretty much how I've done it with all the ROMs I've used for the last couple of months, except that I boot to recovery mode to choose the ROM and start the install.

ok, thanks a lot guys, i spent all my thanks for today, but the conclusion is that i can flash darkys rom on top of phoenix, restoring back to stock will be if i want to take it for warranty or something like that right?

That's my opinion. The install script formats and deletes everything anyway, so going back to stock is superfluous. Some people disagree, but as per my other post, the Darky's instructions say nothing about flashing stock.
I went a couple of months without going back to stock and in that time I flashed various versions of Cognition, Darky's, di11igaf, Assonance, Perception, Axura, Phoenix, Doc's, Serendipity and probably others I've forgotten. I only flashed stock the other day because I sent my phone back to Samsung to see if I can get one with working GPS.

Hey guys, so I had MIUI since it came out and kept updating it every friday like I'm sure everyone else does that has it, but today I wanted to try out a Gingerbread ROM other than MIUI or CM7 so I went and tried to install Mosaic IV. I followed the tutorial on MobileTechVideos for installing it and when I got to the part where I had to install the zip from the sd card I did it and it got stuck at formatting partitions. So I waited a while, about ten minutes, then took out the battery and tried starting over from stock again. Then I realized that I was supposed to use a different kernel for Mosaic IV then the one Josh used in the video. So I downloaded that kernel and used that one instead of the one he used in the tutorial. And I couldn't get into recovery mode with it. So I flashed to stock again and redid the whole thing, this time I got into recovery and flashed it but it still got stuck at formatting partitions. So at this point I was like crap I have to get a different ROM. So I tried flashing Serendipity and that wouldn't install either. Then I tried MIUI again to at least get back to what I had earlier today, and I got an error while flashing the captivate-efsbackup zip in recovery. I have no idea what to do, all I want is to just get off of the stock firmware which im stuck with for now since I have to go to work in a little bit. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

I had a similar problem, and the ultimate fix for me was this:
Flash back to eclair stock (which you did)
Master Clear (aka format internal sd - make sure to back up your stuff first!)
Install CWM (may have to go manually - renaming to update.zip and reinstalling packages)
Wipe dalvik cache and cache partition, as well as user data
Install a stable Froyo ROM (take your pick, preferably a full-wipe with no bootloaders)
Reboot to CWM and do a second dalvik/cache/user data cleaning
(If you're going GB)
reboot to download mode
flash stock GB (WATCH OUT FOR BOOTLOADERS!)
boot it up, let it settle, reboot to CWM
flash your GB rom.
(If not)
Go where you would go from a stable Froyo Rom.
That's how I got back from a messed up phone with GB bootloaders to a working Mosaic installation. I can't say it will definitely work for you, but it may give you some ideas.

+1 get clockwork recovery...you need to make sure the rom you are flashing is compatible with the version of CWR you are using.
For example a rom that needs to be installed with CWR3 you will need to install the zip presumably from CWR2. Pull the battery and reboot back to recovery - you should now be in the updated version of CWR. Then for safety sake - re install your zip.
Reboot and you should be all set.
I had lots of trouble going from 2.2 to 2.3. Flashing between 2.3 roms is very easy comparatively

so your saying that you went to a gingerbread rom straight from MIUI? if that's true it failed because you didn't have the gingerbread bootloaders before you installed the rom

I did have the bootloaders, I went back to stock before I did anything just to be safe. I'm gonna try what the other guys said though right now, wish me luck haha

Alright so I have Andromeda 2.1 which is a froyo rom. Which method should I use to get to stock GB?

I flashed the gingerbread stock rom and have it rooted with xcal's kernel, but when i flashed mosaic IV it got stuck at formatting partitions and i pulled the battery after about 15 minutes and then restarted my phone to find it stuck in a bootloop. So i had to start from stock again and now im back to gingerbread stock with root. I'm kinda scared to try again because it takes me like 30 minutes to get back to gingerbread stock with root. I think ill just stick with stock for a little bit

[Q] How to do a proper Backup and Restore

i have a few questions:
Lets say I use a stock GB ROM with CM Recovery. I backup in recovery and then try the new ICS. I dont like it yet, but make a backup of ICS anyway.
I try a restore from a ICS's recovery (i think it is still CM recovery, only newer version), but it fails every time (bunch of errors).
Then I flash a stock GB ROM again, and then make a restore, and it works.
Please tell me why is that? Is there a incompatibility with different versions of CM Recovery?
Am I doing something wrong?
Is there a thread which explains this (didnt find one)?
Can I switch between GB and ICS Backups?

You can't restore a GB backup in CM*. They use different file systems and partitions. This is explained a lit of times on the forums

So only way for going from ICS to GB is to flash stock GB rom first and then restore it?

Indeed, and the reverse if going from GB to ICS

P1000 Stuck on Recovery

Would appreciate if someone could help me with my problem - I had earlier used CF-Root to root and install recovery which went off well, took a nandroid backup and then tried to flash CM9 through recovery. WIthin a few seconds it rebooted, showed the Cyanogenmod splash screen and went back into recovery - only this time it was a newer recovery (6.0.0.2) than what CF-Root had installed. I'm not able to install through zip file and for some reason I am not able to restore from nandroid as it says the md5 does not match. So as of now I am stuck in recovery.
To add to this, I realize that I messed up as the instructions said to update to a GB rom if coming from Froyo, which I did not notice. Any idea what I can do from here? If I can still run through this process can someone point me in the direction of a suitable GB ROM I can install? My end goal is to be on CM9, but right now would just be happy to get back to the stock GB ROM as well.

Flash to the stock firmware again? at SamMobile? That is what I did when my device did not boot up after installing CWM recovery and some rom.

you better use the overcome stock gingerbread safe 5 (the best stock for all situations) google overcome.com and get the files, you will find also a tutorial for how to stock your tab before updating it to overcome or cm9 etc...

Thanks sos_sifou - worked great! I think I'll stick with the Overcome GB ROM for a while as it works pretty good, and look at CM9 / 10 whenever it gets stable!
