unable to connect USB - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've searched through threads and can't seem to find any solutions. I'm running Axura 2.1CE w/ JK3 kernel. I've used multiple cables, on different computers and none of the computers are able to even detect the device. Any thoughts?

I had this happen to me a couple of times. One time i just needed to restart my phone, and at least once it was a bad flash and I just had to reflash over and master clear. never had it become a permanent problem.

can you not get into download mode using hardware buttons?

The usb cable that came with the phone is not working for you even after installing the proper samsung usb drivers? What windows OS are you trying on?

Make sure it is a data cable and not a charge only cable. Look at the tag that is on the cable and it should tell you what it is.

Like UpNSmoke said.. make sure your using the correct cables.
It is suggested that if your having issues with a computer recognizing your phone to plug the cable in to the USB Port that is on your Motherboard on your Computer.
I would also suggest that if you haven't already - use the drivers that are in Design Gears ODIN 1 Click Back to Stock (links also provided in the sticky here as well). These are the one's I've been using since I've had my phone - and haven't had any issues.
Another thing you can do is - plug in your phone - and then re-install the drivers while the phone is plugged in.
And lastly.. I seem to have better luck with my Windows 7 box then my work's Windows XP machine. Good luck..

The cable I used was the one that came with the phone, what's odd is that I've never had this problem until earlier this week. I've tested it on Win7 x64 and Win7 x86

Tried ODIN 1-click and every machine I've run it on is windows 7.

I haven't had any luck getting a decent connection to my phone yet either. I've tried several different drivers, x86 and x64, different versions of each. Different versions of Kies and Kies Mini. I've tried suggestions from online. Nothing has gotten me anything reliable. I almost forgot, I've tried 2 different phones also. It would be one thing if it just NEVER worked, but for it to work sometimes and other times not, mostly not, is frustrating. I'm afraid to try a new ROM since everything I see about unbricking a Captivate requires a USB connection.

You definitely need to have to have a working USB connection before flashing... and plus you need it to return to stock using ODIN.
Have you tried re-installing the drivers with the phone plugged in and no dice?

I've tried plugged in, not plugged in. USB hub, USB motherboard connection. Just about everything I've seen online I've tried. Some don't work at all and others work briefly but usually within a day refuse to work more than it does work.

USB issues after fresh 2.0b and .03 radio plz help

I recently switched from fresh 1.1 to fresh 2.0b and also the new radio flipz came out with. I love it and I cant wait for all the bugs to be out. I do have a kinda serious problem tho and need the advice of a droid/linux guru. Why is my usb connection not working anymore. I tried it on 3 cpus and no recognization. Also I used the dev tools and it says everythings fine. Some other things I have done is wiped->flashed etc. no luck and also installed the drivers. nothin. On a side note it does charge! thanks alot any advice would help!!!
When you say your USB doesn't work, what exactly do you mean? Do you mean that your device is no longer recognized?
If that is the case, try this (also, make sure usb debugging is enabled):
I have win 7 64 and here is what worked for me:
1. Uninstall HTC Driver (this will likely give you an error, you can ignore it)
2. Uninstall HTC Sync
3. Download and install PdaNet
4. Follow the directions when installing PdaNet
Yea basically the phone is connected cia usb cable. by using the app" dev tools" i can tell the phone and computer are communicating with each other but no notification by windows or phone and they will not Activsync, htc sync, or mount. Also if you boot to recovery it will add files. really odd but it seems to be a problem with alot of ppl. Preciate it im trying what u said right now I will post with results.

turn on USB debugging
USB debugging is most definitley on. I double triple check it every time. The uninstallation of htc sync and driver and the install of the pdanet did not work everything was fine until 2.1 and the radio. But I did wipe and reflash a second time
bump still strugglin comin guys someone has to have the answer
well the radio should have NOTHING to do with connecting via usb... try nand-ing back to a 1.5 and see if you can connect through adb again.. my $0.02
I have the same problem and I am using damage 1.0...The problem is that it no longer gives me any options when i plug in to my computer. I have been working on this for a few days, it really sucks cuz i don't have any other roms on my memcard so I am kinda screwed if I can't figure this out...maybe i will just wipe and start over. I am 100% sure this is not related to the radio whatsoever. Does anyone know how to change the default for when u plug into a computer...i have tried just going to settings/connect to pc. Ask me is checked, and disk drive is default. I am wondering if there is a default to clear in apps management.

well if you are using disk drive you need to use usb ports build into the mobo. idk why but any usb that is not built in will give you problems. even on my laptop the usb ports that are plugged into the mobo dont work but the ones built in do. try that.

I am not sure what u mean by mobo? but it worked on the same usb's when i first flashed, i typically use the exact same usb for everything...i have 4 ports built into my laptop and none of them work for the phone. i even tried reinstalling drivers and htc sync...idk, i just wiped, and then restored and still no go, i guess i will try a wipe w/o restore.
If you're on a desktop, he means plug the cable into the USB ports on the back of the computer chassis. The USB ports there are soldered directly onto the motherboard, where as USB ports on the computer chassis are connected by a cable to the USB headers on the motherboard. What he's saying is that the cable could've been damaged/fried/came loose, so try the ones in the back.

ok so i just wiped and reflashed, now i am stuck at the X loading screen and the phone is frozen...FML, is it bricked, i can still get into recovery, i have the old fresh 1.1 ROM on my card, should i just flash that, or should i just use the nandroid backup i made from stock?
ok so flashed back to stock and my computer still won't recognize my phone...any other ideas, it has to be the computer right?

unless your phone won't charge plugged into the wall (meaning it's your phone), then yes.
Did u check with changing the cord ??
I had a similar problem after upgrading radio & fresh 2.0b. I just changed the USB cable and it worked fine. Even now it doesnt yet work with the earlier cable. Something went wrong in that front, but a diff usb cable did the trick for me. try it out
i have changed 5 cords. have messed with every setting known to man after doing so wiped and reflashed. everything i have used every usb port 1.0 and 2.0 and my phone most definitly charges ( my phones never been so charged) i am a comp prog going on my mis degree im pretty good at this and know my stuff Im just wonndering 2 things is it phone or cpu? reason I keep being so indecisive is because comp will recognize a device when it is in heroc but wont verify its a hero( ive tried all drivers) but phone connected fine b4 2.0 i duno im all out of ideas im gonna try to install the new heroc .6 and hope for the best thanks for the input guys!!!

Brick? Bad new generic cable? Bad port? -- FIXED

Current Scenario:
Phone is stuck at AT&T screen. Can get to download mode. XP cannot installing drivers.
Questions:
Has anyone encountered anything like this? I know some people report issue with some data cables not being able to connect. But I am surprised I can get to download mode with it so am questioning if the cable could be the issue. Could it be a bad port? Since my original cable has gone bad could it have messed up my port? I saw a posts about this but no follow up.
Notes:
Cognition 2.3b6
USB Drivers from (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989) I've obviously have been able to connect prior to these issues to upgrade my ROM.
Kies and Kies Mini were previously installed. I since deleted since having these issues.
Uninstalled iTunes as suggested in other posts.
History:
My phone is stuck at the AT&T boot screen. Using my original Samsung cable I could not get my phone into download mode. So I went out and made the jig to get it into download mode. This worked but win XP won't recognize the phone once I put my original cable in. I realized that my original cable might be internally frayed, so I went out and bought a generic USB cable. Now I can get my phone into download mode (without using the jig) which shows that my original cable has been damaged at some point. This would also explain that when my phone is off and I plugged it in using the old cable the phone would turn on.
Anyway, using this new generic cable, XP/ODIN won't recognize my phone. When trying to put it in download mode (two button/insert cable/no SIM/no SD), I see XP popup: Found New Hardware, USB device, Samsung USB Composite Device, USB device, Samsung USB Composite Device, then get the Found New Hardware Wizard with message Cannot Install the Hardware, problem installing this hardware: USB Device.
Thanks in advance.
Oh and not sure if it matters but I cannot get into recover mode either. Cannot get past AT&T boot screen.
Um... make sure you remove all traces of the Kies stuff.
Re-install USB drivers over the top of the existing ones.
I might suggest buying a "sumsung" cable from an AT&T dealer.
AND - make sure your using the USB port that is on your mobo - apparently it makes a difference.
I had my phone in a "bricked" state and had to re-install drivers on my Win7 box. it found the phone and recognized it enough for ODIN to start up.
Also.... to find out if the phone is being recognized - I would recommend d/l'ing the Android SDK and doing the ADB command - adb devices and see what pops up.
Heh - last thing.. please say you had the phone in "USB Debugging" mode before things went south?
Here's a link to a thread containing another variant of the Captivate USB Drivers:
http://androidforums.com/captivate-.../123644-captivate-usb-drivers-links-here.html
I can't remember which I used, but if the above suggestions don't work for you, it won't hurt to try these!
And for what it's worth, I don't believe the problem to be within the USB cable. I use everything EXCEPT the Samsung USB cable. Anything from Monoprice.com cables, to my old Blackberry cable... A MicroUSB cable is just that...generic or not. As long as it's a 5 pin cable, you should be good.

Upgraded to Cog v2.3b6 before things went south. I normally keep USB Debugging mode as defaulted. Wondering if the update would have caused it to be unchecked. I think I checked that once and rarely make changes. Either way, are you suggesting that if that option is not set that I am pretty much hosed?
@norcal einstein: I will have to try your suggestion from a new machine. My work just locked (McAfee) our machines due to virus going around.
Hi there ... I've run into this similar problem before.. The link you posted's instructions:
"plug usb then open odin"
NO!!!!
#1 odin oneclick must be open before you connect your phone. (and i didnt see in previous posts that you did this?)
Here's the rest....
From a soft-bricked state the Samsung I897 displays a "gadget" screen involving
icons of a phone + exclamation + computer. It is still possible to boot into download mode from this point (which is before the att logo) there your phone can.
Apparently you've been able to get into download mode .
When my phone was soft-bricked and I finally figured out how to put it in download mode I got the "gadget serial device driver not found" bs. I had already opened odin-oneclick and it said "added". So I tried and it worked.
There is no better source for drivers than the manufacturer. So i suggest using those drivers instead. Also the usb port on a captivate IS a generic usb plug.... it's just offset to the side a little bit to add STYLE.
Thanks to everyone that replied. I just want to provide a my resolution for others that might be search for similar issues.
My Captivate is now back up and running. Loaded with Cog2.3b6.
The generic cable proved not to be the issue. I know some people reported having issues with cables but I believe as long as the cable is labeled to be a sync or data cable you should be fine. Avoid the charger cables as it will be just that - a charger cable only.
The jig worked like a charm to get to download mode. Just connect the two leads (4 and 5; closest to the center of the phone) using 301k resistors worked. I used 3x100k and 1x1k. Although, I later learned that my OEM cable went bad on me and just getting a new cable I can get into download mode fine. If some of you are having issues might want to consider keeping a extra cable just to rule out cable issues before trying out the jig. The jig IS very easy to do but finding a micro-b USB plug or adapter that gives easy access to the 4 and 5 leads might be hard.
Out of ideas what was wrong (being stuck at AT&T boot screen, being able to get to download mode, my laptop not being able to detect my phone) I borrowed a laptop running Vista. This worked! Vista and ODIN detected my phone and I was able to get back to stock.
So still not sure what's wrong with MY laptop. Hoping to get it resolved by the time they get the AT&T Froyo update out. But I am very much guessing our tech department tightening up McAfee restrictions (like being able to download exe(cutables) might be the culprit. I will have them remove the restrictions so I can re-install the USB drivers and see if that works.
If you are looking for instructions for how to get download / ODIN working, all the instructions from all the many threads work. I will not repeat those instructions here. But a couple notes: I didn't find any difference with leaving SIM card in or out. Might be best to just leave it out. I've tried both inserting cable last and inserting battery last. Both ways works. So if you can't get one way working chances are you probably won't be able to get it working the other way either. I personally use the battery first, both volume buttons then cable. Once I had to wait 10 mins before getting it to work. That was probably once in about 10 times I've done download mode.
And BIKERBOY8989 is correct, if you can get to the AT&T boot screen chances are you SHOULD be able to get into download mode. Might want to check cables and/or try on another machine. As I mentioned already.
Good luck!!!

i am on firefly 2.5
Hmm... Well its not the rom. Firefly 2.5 works fine for that. Any chance you've tried a different usb cable? Didn't see that in the op. Could be a bad pin/wire in the usb cable itself or on the connectors.
Also, no dirt/debris in the usb connection on the phone itself right?
Just to be clear the phone will charge when the usb is connected as well correct?

I had a cable issue when I first got my Captivate, and it was incredibly aggravating diagnosing the problem. The trouble was that with my USB cable the phone would charge just fine, but the computer would not recognize it. I assumed it was the phone or drivers--since the cable seemed good. At that point I didn't realize how precise the voltage has to be and stuff for the computer to recognize the phone. I tried my wife's cable, and everything worked fine, so I brought my cable back and AT&T gave me a new one. Not that this story helps you at all since you already tried a different cable...

[Q] Driver Issues? Or maybe cable?

So recently I soft-bricked my phone (phone---!---computer) and it won't go download/recovery. It randomly froze while odin was running. But anyways, I've been trying to use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153310 to unbrick it but it keeps telling me the drivers are not installed.
I've installed drivers using kies, the one click unbrick, and just from the samsung website and none of them seem to work. When I plug my phone in, it makes the usb plug in noise, then an icon shows up in the bottom right task bar for maybe 1/10th a second and then disappears. I'm running vista x32. Any ideas? Could it be the cable?
Heimdall uses special drivers.
As part of the heimdall one-click operation, it should ask you if you want to install the drivers (zadig.exe, I believe, is the application that does this).
If, for some reason, it doesn't, grab the full Heimdall package (search in the Development section for "Heimdall"), and that will definitely have the drivers.

Yea it told me to install the samsung usb composite driver and I did that. After rebooting my computer, when I plugged in the phone, windows confirmed that I had the driver installed but for some reason when I plug my phone into the usb it only recognizes the phone for a split second.
Edit: Actually the instructions tell me to put my phone into download mode in order for the driver to be installed successfully. Since my phone is bricked, I can't do that but it let me install the driver anyway. So I guess that's why it tells me drivers are not properly instaled.
That does sound like either a flaky cable or a USB port that's not behaving. If you have multiple USB ports, try plugging the phone into different ones. If you're on a desktop, the ones in the back are usually better. You may need to reboot the computer between tries.
If all that fails, see if you can get your hands on a different cable, or even a different computer.

[Q] USB Doesn't Recognize with all drivers and method.

Hello,
I am newbie here.
I have my captivate since January. I like the device itself very much.
However, I wasn't able to update the firmware to Froyo or Gingerbread at all due to a lot of difficulties that I faced.
My phone is ROOT(just to confirm, I have 'superuser' app - does that mean my phone is ROOT?).
I used to have laptop with linux 10.04, and believe or not it was so difficult to ROOT my phone.
However, I have Win7 64bit Professional currently.
And trying to upgrade to Gingerbread. (My phone is 2.1 firmware as of now.)
The problem that I'm facing is that my phone won't recognize at all when I plug into USB ports.
These are what I've tried so far,
(on both USB debugging mode & mass storage mode)
- Yes, I tried several different ports as of suggestions from other post.
- I tried to install & re-install drivers. (I tried SGH-i897_Captivate_USB_Drivers_5_02_0_2.zip driver & Samsung Galaxy S USB Driver for Windows x64)
- I did restart my computer more than 10 times.
- I installed current kies and re-install several times.
- I installed older version of kies 1.xxxx.
- I did delete drivers from device management.
I am really running out with ideas to solve my problem.
I've been researching a lot & can't find any more solutions.
CAN ANYONE HELP???
Thanx!!!
Have you tried a different USB cable? Preferably the one that came with the phone (unless that's the one you're using now, of course)?

The cable that came with the Captivate is known to not work with all computers (my guess is it's some sort of voltage range it doesn't like). There are a few threads on this in this forum.
My suggestion is to get a Motorola cable. Here's why:
My stock Samsung cable that came with my Captivate worked on my old PowerMac G5, but not my brand new iMac. I thought it was an attempt by Apple to deny use of Android phones on their machines.
I tried using a store-bought USB cable by RocketFish. It still didn't work.
Out of desperation, I tried the Motorola cable that came with my wife's Bravo, and the phone connected with no problem.
From your description, it sounds like you could connect on an old computer/OS combo, but not with a new computer/OS combo. So try to get your hands on a Motorola cable (or other third-party cable) and try that.
@ apbthe3 yes, I am already using the cable that came with the phone. Thanx!
@ KreepyKen I did try the cable that I have with on a mac computer and the mac seems like not recognizing either. I'll go to AT&T shop to see if they can try with motorola cable. Thanx!
