Hi
Maybe I didn't search very well but I have a question that seems very stupid...
With Odin, is it possible to flash a custom rom?
I mean the rom that i use normally flash with voodoo on the recovery mode can't bee found by odin...
Thing is that i've got the corrupted memory problem and acted to fast and flashed the stock 2.2 firmware from bell....now i'm stuck with 3e recovery...
If I could flash to a pre-rooted rom with CWM or Voodoo it would be better i thing if i want to try some manipulation with adb

I haven't confirmed this or searched but I think it's because you have voodoo enabled, this format is ext4 which is a linux format and can't be seen on windows unless you ahve some 3rd party software installed. Just boot into recovery and disable the voodoo, this will put your phone back to the normal format and odin should recognize it.....i'm totally guess here since i haven't tried it but I think this would be the cause
Darky's ROM is meant to be flashed via Clockwork recovery and can not be flashed by odin, darky's comes in a zip file and odin only uses .tar extensions

Could anyone told me what's the relationship between Odin and Rom Manager
I wanna upgrade captivate from 2.1 to 2.2, so i read some guides
It seems that some guides told me use odin and need the adb shell or combine keys to enter downloading mode. And then flash the pit,and csc, phone, pda.
But meanwhile, some guides said just put the rom in sd card and reboot the phone by Rom Manager.
So i get confused, could anyone told me which should i listen?
By the way,if the phone is locked 3 keys, does rom manager still work?
Odin is the a flashing tool that is run from the PC. Rom Manager is a tool that is run from the phone itself. It depends on what rom you want to flash, some of them are built to be flashed from Odin, and as such won't flash with Rom Manager and vice versa. Other than they are both flashing tools they don't really have a connection.
As to the question regarding if rom manager will work with no-button-combo phones, I'm pretty sure it will, but don't quote me on it.

Thanks, you means these two tools can do exactly the same thing, but the rom source is different?
The rom manager can use a .zip rom contains data/META-INF/system etc. folders?
And the Odin should flash the rom which contains *.pit,*.tar,*.tar.md5 ?
By the way, i saw the 2.1 don't support the recovery etc. from apps, does that means rom manager doesn't work in 2.1? (I already read the 2.2 guide, and it said just use the rom manager)
Yeah, both are tools used to flash roms to your phone. However a rom made to be flashed by odin can't be flashed with Rom Manager, and a rom made to be flashed by Rom Manager can't be flashed with Odin. Some developers make two versions of the same rom so that you can flash it with your preferred method.
The last thing you mentioned is backwards... 2.1 uses recovery 2e which allows for the use of self-signed update.zips (this is what RomManager uses to get into clockwork recovery which is a modified recovery that does the actual flashing). However 2.2 uses recovery 3e which doesn't allow for this.
This means that if your on 2.1 presently you can flash with RomManager (you can even use RomManager to flash from 2.1 to 2.2), but if your using 2.2 your only flashing option is to use Odin.
Once on 2.2 you can use Odin to flash a modified 2e recovery that works with froyo and you will once again be able to use self-signed zips. (some of the unofficial roms like cognition do this automatically so you don't have to)

Hmmm, can this be the problem i got? Flashed from JH to Cognition 2.2B6 via rom manager, and made a backup before. Now when i'm trying to flash back the backed up JH (2.1) rom my phone is stuck on AT&T screen....
edit: with cognition 2.2 i still got 2e recovery and not 3e....
Thanks,I think i got it. It seems that developer in China always package the rom into Odin struct, so i didn't tried Rom Manager.
And dimab, I think what you need is search "Captivate JI6 kernel with "2e recovery" enabled" (I can't post link since i was new user)

well first off you still have 2e because Cog 2.2 Beta 6 uses a modified 2e recovery (its modified to work with froyo)
I think that when you create a backup of your rom with RomManager it doesn't include a backup of the kernel. If so when you tried to flash your 2.1 backup it never switched your kernal back to a 2.1 compatible version. hence the not booting past the att screen.
You might want to try flashing just the kernal (not the whole rom) with ODIN... Or even easier if you have your backup on your computer you can odin 1click back to stock, put your backup back on your phone, and flash the backup again with RomManager.

Woah, this did helped! HUGE thanks! First time used Odin 1Click and it was smooth, and then restored my 2.1 backup.
Didn't needed to backup on computer the rom backups, since everything was left the same...
Dima
I recently did my first flash.
I am on seeARMS rom (JL2) using the SOK (super optimized kernal) via 2.2 froyo
Basically I flashed the Kernal via ODIN then the ROM via CWM recovery.
I have this speedmod kernal that I did not use. I am curious to try it out. My question is simple, do I have to use ODIN to flash the .pda .tar file or can I just put it on my internal SD and boot into recovery (CWM) then select install from zip and locate the .tar ?
do both work ? do I have to change anything else ? remove lag fixes ? do I lose data ? etc. or is it just simple as changing kernels as often as you want via CWM ?
Sorry about the newb question.. I'm learning.

Disable the lagfix and all tweaks, clean your dalvik cache, cache, dl the CWM speedmod put it in the root sdcard, install from zip, and you good to go. It shouldn't affect your actual Rom nor your apps.
do both work? Yes
do I have to change anything else? No*
remove lag fixes? No, but I feel saver when I do
do I lose data? No
etc. or is it just simple as changing kernels as often as you want via CWM? Yes, it's really comfortable
*The kernels don't care about the tweaks of the others
Hello.
So i've got a problem with my I9000.
I've upgraded it to froyo, official release, so i'm stuck with the 3e recovery.I recently flashed the voodoo lagfix kernel via Odin. I would like to get clockwork recovery to replace 3e, but I understand i have to flash it via Odin, too. My question is : Is clockwork's kernel going to replace voodoo? If so, how can i have them both?
Thanks a lot in advance.
if you upgrade offical froyo then u must first do a root..the root files can be find here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108...download correct root for your firmwire phone...then flash it tru odin..when u done with that u must download a rom manager from market...and install it to get clockwork mode =)
I wouldn't follow the previous poster's advice.
If you're going to use cwm, why do you want stock firmware? Try flashing speedmod kernel to get cwm, which has built in root and lagfix accesable from recovery. Or just go to a custom fw like docrom kitchen.
Best procedure for going custom with the sgs is a single flash of speedmod w/ cwm from odin, and then flash anything else via cwm.
Sent from xda premium app on i9000m.
My SGS does not boot and does not enter recovery mode. I can enter download mode though. I suspect it happened after I removed some files from SD card.
Can I access SD card in download mode?
How can I use download mode to restore firmware and the recovery?
Thanks in advance.
u have to reflash your firmware. if u get only downloadmode working u can only reflash your device.
try a custom kernel first. if this wont work, then flash new firmware
Strange.from download mode you can only flash firmware.I think u can use adb and connect your phone to computer.try little search on topics don't rush first read carefully.

@malcho
adb wont work in download mode. only in cwm and after successful boot
So I understand I need to connect to PC in download mode and then use some software like ODIN to flash a ROM? Correct?
thats right.
may u can flash via kies, if u want a stock rom from samsung
I didn't know that info about adb. Thanks for info

Well, it's strange but looks better. Even before I did anything with ODIN the phone booted into the new ROM but I still cannot get into recovery. Seems like ROM installation procedure deleted something essential to run the recovery.
So now I have the download mode and Android working.
I am trying not to make any sudden moves so that I won't lose to ability to boot the ROM. What would be the best way to restore ClockworkMod recovery?
What ROM are you running now?
From a running stock-ROM the easiest way is to flash some custom kernel that includes CWM.
Here's a list http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966646
For 2.2.1-based ROM I prefer Speedmod.
For 2.3.3-based, choose your own
edit: There are some ROMs/kernels that can only enter recovery when USB-debugging is on.

I've just switched from Darky's 9.2 to PilotX with 2.6.35.7-I9000X[email protected]#Beta4.2_1 kernel.
From what you are saying I understand CWM recovery needs Linux kernel to run. I thought it's a stand alone boot-loader independent from the OS and kernel.
I installed CF-Root-XW_NEE_JVH-v3.2-CWM3RFS which comes with CWM recovery via ODIN with no effect. I still cannot reach recovery mode.
My phone came with 3e recovery which I downgraded to 2e (I don't remember how I did it then). Is it possible it has something to do with the problem?
You should always flash to stock when you have an issue.
You can also use Darky's resurrection (at least, part A: Pit with re-partition)
Then flash the original firmware (from samfirmware.com)
Thanks to everyone.
The problem was solved using http://www.v00d00.co.il/GBFINAL.pdf guide. Note, this guide is only relevant for Hebrew PilotX ROM.
Okay,
So i have searched, I was on 2.3.3 custom rom, and then i went on to flash Onecosmic's ICS Port Android 4.0.3 RC1, i flashed the kernel first and then from then on i cant go past flash screen. I tried flashing official firmware from here "I9000DXJV9_OLBJV9_DXJV9" but it wont go past flash screen. any help??? Can somebody link me to full official rom with bootloader and everything.??
register at sammobiles.com and find your firmware there, then flash it through ODIN. Then flash your KERNEL then any custom rom. If you find bootloop, you will need to flash a voodoo kernel this gives you other options in CWM to enable you to disable ALL lags. Then you should be fine. You can reflash any other kernel once your all done.

Ok i will try find out a vooddoo kernel, but if you please can link me to it, it will be very easier
Ok i flashed the voodoo kernel and from CWM i disabled the lagfix. And then again i i got the same error, "failed to mount /dbdata" after flashing through odin. And again back to bootloop.
What do i do.
Thankfully i can get into recovery menu. And i tried restoring nand backup but i got an error flashing boot image.
What's the next step
Try this. Remove BOTH external sd card and sim card. Boot to recovery, goto mounts/storage and format sdcard, back to recovery head menu, factory reset/wipe, format cache/format dalvik cache then remove battery, boot to doenload and flash rom agin with odin
Oh, and dont forget to disable ALL lagfixes BEFORE odin flash.
i had the same problem yesterday, what i did is i flashed through odin some 2.2 froyo (3 files) with repartition and the problem was solved; the rom was pre rooted JP3 ; hope it helps you
