I recently did my first flash.
I am on seeARMS rom (JL2) using the SOK (super optimized kernal) via 2.2 froyo
Basically I flashed the Kernal via ODIN then the ROM via CWM recovery.
I have this speedmod kernal that I did not use. I am curious to try it out. My question is simple, do I have to use ODIN to flash the .pda .tar file or can I just put it on my internal SD and boot into recovery (CWM) then select install from zip and locate the .tar ?
do both work ? do I have to change anything else ? remove lag fixes ? do I lose data ? etc. or is it just simple as changing kernels as often as you want via CWM ?
Sorry about the newb question.. I'm learning.

Disable the lagfix and all tweaks, clean your dalvik cache, cache, dl the CWM speedmod put it in the root sdcard, install from zip, and you good to go. It shouldn't affect your actual Rom nor your apps.
do both work? Yes
do I have to change anything else? No*
remove lag fixes? No, but I feel saver when I do
do I lose data? No
etc. or is it just simple as changing kernels as often as you want via CWM? Yes, it's really comfortable
*The kernels don't care about the tweaks of the others

Hi
Maybe I didn't search very well but I have a question that seems very stupid...
With Odin, is it possible to flash a custom rom?
I mean the rom that i use normally flash with voodoo on the recovery mode can't bee found by odin...
Thing is that i've got the corrupted memory problem and acted to fast and flashed the stock 2.2 firmware from bell....now i'm stuck with 3e recovery...
If I could flash to a pre-rooted rom with CWM or Voodoo it would be better i thing if i want to try some manipulation with adb

I haven't confirmed this or searched but I think it's because you have voodoo enabled, this format is ext4 which is a linux format and can't be seen on windows unless you ahve some 3rd party software installed. Just boot into recovery and disable the voodoo, this will put your phone back to the normal format and odin should recognize it.....i'm totally guess here since i haven't tried it but I think this would be the cause
Darky's ROM is meant to be flashed via Clockwork recovery and can not be flashed by odin, darky's comes in a zip file and odin only uses .tar extensions
Hi everybody!
I tried to search everywhere, but I can't find it.
Does anybody know where can I find a tutorial/guide to install a kernel (voodoo if possible) un our SGS flashed with darky's 8.1?
Every info i found is uncomplete or requires certain things I've never done before.
thanks in advance!
Flash .zip(kernel) with clockwork mod recovery like you flashed darky's rom.

Every kernel developer writes installation instructions in first post. Well,
*if you have rooted phone with ClockWorksMode recovery you just download one of CWM zip files of kernel of your choice and go to recovery and install zip file from there.
*If your phone has 2e recovery do the same as above but rename your zip file to update.zip and place it in root of sd card and flash update from recovery
*if your phone has 3e recovery you need to use Odin - download odin version of kernel of your choice, unzip it to get .tar file, add this tar file to PDA field of Odin, start your phone in download mode and flash it from Odin.
You can also use "SGS kernel flasher" from the market. It is simpler (recommended). Use CWM versions of kernels or unpack zImage somewhere.
You do understand that Darky's Rom comes with a kernel (Voodoo Advanced without OC/UV I believe).
You can check it's enabled by enterring recovery mode on your phone by turning it off and then turning it back on with the combination of Vol-down + Home + Power and then the appropriate sub-menu.
If you want to install a new one, download the CWM (ClockWork Mod) version of the kernel and flash it through the same Clockwork Recovery.
three excellent responses, each one better than the other
Thank you, thank you very much !
Sorry to be picky but its vol up, home and power.
Vol down gives you download mode.
Yes, as Zeroundead said, if you already have Darky's ROM, you just reboot into recovery, and enable it.
Darky's Version 8.1 has Speedmod kernel.
Here's a video of enabling the lagfix in version 8.0.

hi,
i'm going to flash a custom ROM to my i896, i'm currently on stock ROM + speedmod k12t, have already disable lagfix, and backup all data.
i did researched, but what i want to know is not there.
i know i need to be on stock ROM to before flash, since i'm on stock rom, i still have some questions
so i got 2 questions:
1. do i need to flash back to restore kernel before flashing ROM?
2. after flashed ROM, do i need to flash the speedmod kernel aagain?
thank you.

1. no, you don't need to flash to the stock kernel;
2. usually the rom comes with certain version of kernel, you can definitely replace it if you want to use the latest speedmod, for example.
thank you so much.
i got another question
i use odin3 to flash ROM
i put the ROM file in the PDA section. leave phone and CSC blank.
but what should i put in PIT section?

usually i only use odin3 to flash to the stock rom. you need to put .pit file in the PIT and a tar file in PDA.
but since you are flashing to a custom rom, usually you can get the cwm file and use cwm to flash. it is easy and quick.
yes root phone grab rom manager from app market is easy as pie
grab files 2 flash put them in sd card by phone browser or with usb cable and pc, flash with rom mamanger is easy as 1 2 3
if any more help is needed ill c if i can find thread link tonight also there is a vids on Congnition 3.04 thread makes life easy sence your stock allready u can skip odin if u like but that is perfered way
When I flash new roms, I drop zip onto my sd then boot CWrecovery, then flash zip from clockwork recovery, without using rom manager. I had an issue restoring a nandroid backup i made using Rom manager (md5 sum issue?) and i couldn't restore the backup. I read somewhere this can happen from time to time. Rom Manager is good, you can rename your backups. Flashing roms gets addictive!!

About the md5 sum error, sometimes having spaces in your backup name will make it say that. Remove spaces and it should work again.

Hi,
No need to delete anything or do factory reset.
Download semaphore kernel and flash it ontop of the current one using ODIN or kernel flasher application that you can download from the Market.
You wont loose any installed application or settings.
No wipes nor factory reset. Just put the new kernel in PDA section of ODIN, plug phone in download mode and start. Two things to be careful: 1-Disable lagfix. 2-Make sure you have downloaded the proper version of Semaphore (for JVQ).

Just to be clear, can you mix kernels with custom roms or are they specific? Would there be any advantage in doing this? Wondering if that would be a fix for an audio (high gain mic recording) issue on my phone.
Thanks

It is an animation showing when your screen going to turn off. Most of the custom ROM have this feature. You are on Darky 10.2EE right. That ROM have this feature. Enable All animation in Display settings.
You can find the kernel you want on the xda development page and you can flash it either via odin or kernel flasher without wiping anything

new kernel
First of all sorry if this is in wrong thread. 2ndly, I have never had this problem before but today when I tried to flash a new kernel something weird went wrong and now when i boot my phone it is super laggy and screen is all messed up. I deleted caches and dalvik cache but it is still doing the same thing. I dont know what I did wrong since I've done this before and I don't think its the kernel since it doesn't seem like anyone else has had this problem. Btw, the new kernel I tried flashing was franko's r133 build. I previously had r130 and no problems but when I went to flash the new one this morning it like totally messed up my screen and whatever else. I'm so confused. Again sorry if this is in wrong spot. Thanks for any help.
I know there is a Stock Gingerbread pre-rooted ROM..But is there a pre-rooted Stock ICS ROM with a safe kernal so the only thing I have to do flash it using PC Odin?

Unfortunately, the only safe way for the moment to root ICS is to flash a custom kernel in PC ODIN...I suggest you flash Speedmod or Notecore. Then you can use triangle away to reset the binary counter and get rid of the triangle.
Im on CM9 at the moment.. Just to be sure, Flash stock ICS (should I wipe/factory before or it doesnt matter?). Flash a kernal. Then do a wipe/factory since it´s safe now.. Am I right?
Or another thing, Is there a custom Touchwiz based ICS ROM which is safe from the EMMC bug and is rooted, if yes then which do you recommend for speed and stability?

Ok CM9 is safe to wipe...only if you are using the CM9 kernel. ICS is not safe for certain even running a custom kernel. The safest way to do a full wipe is flashing a GB kernel, wiping and then flashing the custom rom.
There's no Stockish rom that is safe from emmc bug...just the safest is to flash a known so far safe custom kernel and run the custom rom or your choice. I am still running stock rom with notecore kernel and it works great...
Is this safe following?
2. Long, No raised couter OR Exclamation mark
-Downgrade to Rootable GB ROM and Root it. OR Download This pre rooted GB ROM and flash using PC Odin
-Wipe cache, data and delvic cache from recovery
-Install Mobile Odin Pro
-Copy ICS ROM file in .tar (you want to flash) to Internal SD card (recommended, but you can have it on EXT too)
-Copy one of custom Kernel in .tar file e.g.Notecore, Speedmod, CF root kernel Or other any with same function.
-Open Mobile Odin Pro
-select open file
-Point to ROM file you have copied
-All fiels will popup and feel automatically
-select kernel and point to custom kernel file you have copied
Flash.
Done!

Yes Rivan_92, that is a long yet safe method to root a stock Ice Cream Sandwich firmware. The shorter safe method would be to flash anyone of the safe custom Ice Cream Sandwich kernels listed in the quote, via PC ODIN. After that, download Triangle Away from the Google Play Store to get rid of the yellow triangle.
@Rivan_92
Yes this is one of safest method, N i am sure you copied it from one of my thread.
Still want more detail about procedure find 'ROM switching" on my signature.
Thanks you guys!
Yes dr.ketan, i did copy the text from on of your threads =D also thanks for the thread in your sig. for switching over.. Very detailed and helpful!
