hi,
i'm going to flash a custom ROM to my i896, i'm currently on stock ROM + speedmod k12t, have already disable lagfix, and backup all data.
i did researched, but what i want to know is not there.
i know i need to be on stock ROM to before flash, since i'm on stock rom, i still have some questions
so i got 2 questions:
1. do i need to flash back to restore kernel before flashing ROM?
2. after flashed ROM, do i need to flash the speedmod kernel aagain?
thank you.

1. no, you don't need to flash to the stock kernel;
2. usually the rom comes with certain version of kernel, you can definitely replace it if you want to use the latest speedmod, for example.
thank you so much.
i got another question
i use odin3 to flash ROM
i put the ROM file in the PDA section. leave phone and CSC blank.
but what should i put in PIT section?

usually i only use odin3 to flash to the stock rom. you need to put .pit file in the PIT and a tar file in PDA.
but since you are flashing to a custom rom, usually you can get the cwm file and use cwm to flash. it is easy and quick.
yes root phone grab rom manager from app market is easy as pie
grab files 2 flash put them in sd card by phone browser or with usb cable and pc, flash with rom mamanger is easy as 1 2 3
if any more help is needed ill c if i can find thread link tonight also there is a vids on Congnition 3.04 thread makes life easy sence your stock allready u can skip odin if u like but that is perfered way
When I flash new roms, I drop zip onto my sd then boot CWrecovery, then flash zip from clockwork recovery, without using rom manager. I had an issue restoring a nandroid backup i made using Rom manager (md5 sum issue?) and i couldn't restore the backup. I read somewhere this can happen from time to time. Rom Manager is good, you can rename your backups. Flashing roms gets addictive!!

About the md5 sum error, sometimes having spaces in your backup name will make it say that. Remove spaces and it should work again.

Hi everybody
I need help,I flashed a rom some days agò,I wanted to change it and installed new zip file in my phone,I did this operationcwd recovery)wipe hard reset;wipe cache;wipe kalvin;instal zip file from sdcard;chose zip file;I take the rom file;it seams to start, but every new zip files I have put inside my phone stopped the process with words installing updates, after that,I have to take off battery and reboot,so my question is:do I have to change the name of the new rom file in update.zip? It seams the system cannot find the update file,I don't change the name of the roms file in update,is this the reason why I cannot instal others roms?
nitr8's ROM will help
I can't tell what is going wrong for you.
It seems that you have flashed a custo/rooted/CWM kernel via Odin?
So you are able to flash with Odin?
Last week I wanted to Upgrade my girlfriends SGS and got stuck harder then ever before.
I used to flash JPM to get unstuck but this time nothing worked.
Flashed and flashed and flashed.. My girlfriend was on Insanity 0.99 and I wanted to put her on new Insanity 0.40 JPY.(OTA!!!!)
But I got stuck big time, Then I remembered that Nitr8 made a special fix rom.
This rom comes with root, busybox and CWM.
I flashed it with ODIN using a pit512 file and in one go all was working again.
Then I downloaded the ROM I wanted to install and put it on a Folder on the internal SD (I called the folder rom) then reboot in CWM, and flash your .zip file like normal ( no need to rename to update.zip)
just choose
- install zip from SD
- choose zip from sdcard
now browse to the folder containing your .zip file and that's it..(in my case this would be: rom)
This worked like a charm for me!!
No credits go to me if this works you should thank Nitr8 for all his realy great work... The stuff he makes is just awesome!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843019
or go direct to his site and go to rom and download insane.rar unzip and flash with odin (pit512) (I don't think I checked repartition) http://insanity.rollus.net/index.php?dir=rom/
You don't need to flash a nitr8 rom afterwords.. The roms he makes are extreme basic, all extra's like office, readers, gmail sync and so on are not in his rom.. You can add but this rom is I think to basic for you.. After fixing your sgs with insane.rar you should be able to flash anything you want using CWM..
Goodluck!! (credits to Nitr8)!
Stock 2.1 via odin, stock 2.2 via odin. hardcore's kernel via odin, ANYTHING after that.
Thank you for your answer and help,a friend of mine flashed the firmware with odin and then flashed androdena rom(the rom with pink wallpaper)this rom is great, well done and very fast, but it seams I cannot install others roms,I will try to do that with Odin,I have to lear how to use it before ahahah I'll let you know!
Thank you very much!
Hi,thanks for your answer,I did every passage before coming here, maybe it will better to flash with Odin....I don't know.
well, i have had some issues flashing my phone to 2.3, and it is currently on continuum v5.5 working fine for a few versions. so i don't want to rush into anything and mess it up again, but i want to try another rom. im a little confused to what all i need to do to get the new phoenix rom on coming from a talon kernel.
thanks!
Just use ODIN ONE CLICK STOCK (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989 and then place the rom of ur choice and flash it in CWM!! tell me if u need anything else
Odin back to stock and follow instructions in the OP for the Pheonix thread.
You need to verify that your current installed kernel is compatible with your new rom of choice.
If not:
1. Find one that is compatible, install it via odin without rebooting - then boot to recovery and install the zip file in cwm.
OR
2. Odin one click to stock and go from scratch.
If going from GB to GB rom then the important thing is the kernel compatibility or you will likely go into bootloop. Other than that wipe, reset and install.
Hello,
I am completely new to flashing roms on android devices and i am just trying to understand the basics behind the process.
- Installing custom roms
- reverting back to stock firmware after installing a rom
I read the 4th post in this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991792
i kinda have some understanding about flashing roms now but i still dont fully understand it.
My device is a Samsung Galaxy S i9000.
Thanks
What exactly do you want to know?
1. Installing custom roms is pretty easy the hard part is choosing the rom and to flash a rom you need to have the cwm recovery and like be on the base you need. ex: lets say you are on a jvt rom and you want to flash a jw1 rom, well in this case you dud need to flash jw1 from odin and then flash the rom from recovery...., but if you are on a jw1 custom rom, then in that case you can just flash the rom from recovery with wipe (recommended).
2. To flash back to stock: you dud need the stock file from sammobile or from wherever you get it and you would need odin, you place your phone in download mode then you put 512pit in the pit section/ code in the pda section/ modem in the phone section/ and csc in csc. then you have to make sure that repartition is ticked and all the others. make sure that the download is not interrupted for that would brick the phone.
-to flash a kernel you dud need to put the tar file in pda and Don't check repartition and click start.
I hope this helped a little
and remember to do this at your own risk.
Sorry for the noob questions but im just trying to understand haha
1. what are jvt and jw1 roms?
2. When you say be on the base you need do you mean the base firmware required for the rom?
3. How would i know which rom i have now, JVT or Jw1?
4. Whats the thing u mentioned whipe in "you can just flash the rom from recovery with wipe (recommended).?
last.5. I already found the stock firmware i have now and ive downloaded it for later if i need to restore it. but what is the tar file you mentioned in the end?
Thanks Man. I appreciate it.

sorry, this is not meant to be offensive but you have a lot to read. There're some good tutorials on how to flash your phone here on xda. search for it.
short answers to your questions:
1. jvt or jw1 are versions of stock samsung roms
2. I think he means if you are on a jvt rom you should only flash custom roms for jvt
3. settings>about phone
4. wipe means resetting the phone, deleting cache and dalvik-cache
no matter what u know u first should know about flashing stock roms..in case u mess something up u will need to flash the stock roms, its a good thing that u have already downloaded these..then u should know how to install kernels to root n have Clockworkmod recovery, then u will be able to flash custom roms..u should serach the net for these questions with a 'How to' at first...
Instruction for new ROM installation
There are basically 2 methods for flashing a ROM
1. CWM recovery menu mode
2. Download mode.
1. For CWM recovery mode you phone must be rooted with CWM, just put the ROM zip file in sdcard of your phone of your choice. then power off the phone. Then you may want to boot in reovery mode for this use pressing and holding 3 button combination simultaneaously as Volume UP + Home key + Power key now you should be booted in to recovery mode there just wipe data/factory reset then wipe cache from option then find and select install from sdcard -> chose file zip from sdcard and press power key to selct and start flashing. wait max 5 min and your phone will be booted with new rom of your choice.
2. Boot in to download mode by pressing and holding 3 button combination simultaneaously as Volume down + Home key + Power key now you should be booted in to download mode now connect your phone with PC and open odin in PC then select ROM file as PDA, PHONE & CSC under propoer boxes then click start - wait max 5 min and you phone will be booted in to new rom.

Hello,
I will start with saying that Ive already checked every tutorial in every android website.
here is what I did.
I had Miui (Not the ICS one) I have tried to flash CM9 with the existing recovery. than something somewhere on the flash procedure go wrong and the phone just rebooted and putted in loop with no recovery option but download option. so I tried to flash the stock rom using odin 1.85, and the phone just looping on the image of the mobile operator. I did this procedure with the odin for more stock roms I found.
thanks in advance really I need your help...

maybe you forget ‘Re-Partition’checkbox, it's important.
Hmmm.. perhaps, you have to make sure all the files are properly placed (depending on the ROM you are installing). Also, I'd recommend using a pit file (and don't forget to click on "Re-Partition".. So far, it worked for me. ^.~

My question: I have a SGN infected with the eMMC bug, and I want to upgrade it to the latest stock ROM. I know very little about flashing, and I know there are some risks when doing some things. I would like to know if the first link is safe for me, and which ROM I should use of the ones listed there (I live in The Netherlands). Do you guys have any tips or some guides made for the noobs among us?
that 1st link is the safest and best.
download the rom of. your choice. It. doesn't need to be of. your region. although you can check the latest firmware on www.samfirmware.com....
Once downloaded, use pc odin with the downloaded rom tar.md5 file selected in the pda tab. The connect the phone to pc in download mode and press start.
If you are upgrading to ics, then do not do any wipes, first flash a safe kernel...

Thanks for replying. Good to know that that thread is safe, but what do you mean by flashing a safe kernel? Those terms mean nothing to me.
theres two way to flash ROM. 1 is using PC ODIN and the other one is CWM
Flashing Via PC ODIN .. you need to have two thing.. The Rom You Want to flash and the PC-ODIN software
Flashing Via CWM.. you need two things. You need to root your phone and you need to install CWM.
every rom comes with modem, kernel (the file that govern how to handle your phone cpu), csc... the kernel inside ics is known to have brickbug
theres no need to flash kernel if you are flashing Rom via PC ODIN... Flashing kernel is when you are using CWM....

So, I can just flash any ROM using ODIN, and there will be no risk bricking my device?
If I flash a ROM, will I have a fresh install, and will my kernel also change so that I don't have the brickbug anymore?

yes you can flash any ROM using ODIN safely without bricking your device.
yes you will have a fresh install. your kernel will change too. as for the brickbug....
If you flash via PC ODIN then everything is stock to what you flashed.the kernel the firmware the csc the modem..all as stock provided....
1.If you flash ICS via PC-ODIN then your kernel also would be stock ics kernel that has brickbug..
Warning :
Don't wipe anything from stock ICS recovery
Don't factory reset/Hard reset on stock ICS.
Don't flash any Wipe version of ICS ROM
let say you want to flash Latest JB Rom but you are on ICS stock.
first thing you need to do is root your device ...install CWM.. Flash safe kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
let say ive rooted... installed CWM with safe kernel...
what i always do is everytime i want to flash new rom whatever rom it is...i flash Speedmod 3-15 (safe kernel) and go to Advance>reboot recovery and flash any rom i want so that im on the safe side without worrying what kernel im on.
2.If you flash GB than your kernel will be GB kernel which is safe to wipe..
if you want to flash custom rom from gb then you root your device and installed CWM and Flash since GB kernel is safe.
but.. let say u flashed ICS and wanted to go back to GB. then you are not safe anymore,,, that is why i always flashed Speedmod kernel 3-15 (safe kernel) and reboot recovery (by going to advance>rebootrecovery) and flashed any rom... that way im always sure that im in safe kernel when flashing Rom

You can download any stock rom you want from searching it on the forum then you can flash it through ODIN using your computer
