Hello,
I am completely new to flashing roms on android devices and i am just trying to understand the basics behind the process.
- Installing custom roms
- reverting back to stock firmware after installing a rom
I read the 4th post in this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991792
i kinda have some understanding about flashing roms now but i still dont fully understand it.
My device is a Samsung Galaxy S i9000.
Thanks
What exactly do you want to know?
1. Installing custom roms is pretty easy the hard part is choosing the rom and to flash a rom you need to have the cwm recovery and like be on the base you need. ex: lets say you are on a jvt rom and you want to flash a jw1 rom, well in this case you dud need to flash jw1 from odin and then flash the rom from recovery...., but if you are on a jw1 custom rom, then in that case you can just flash the rom from recovery with wipe (recommended).
2. To flash back to stock: you dud need the stock file from sammobile or from wherever you get it and you would need odin, you place your phone in download mode then you put 512pit in the pit section/ code in the pda section/ modem in the phone section/ and csc in csc. then you have to make sure that repartition is ticked and all the others. make sure that the download is not interrupted for that would brick the phone.
-to flash a kernel you dud need to put the tar file in pda and Don't check repartition and click start.
I hope this helped a little
and remember to do this at your own risk.
Sorry for the noob questions but im just trying to understand haha
1. what are jvt and jw1 roms?
2. When you say be on the base you need do you mean the base firmware required for the rom?
3. How would i know which rom i have now, JVT or Jw1?
4. Whats the thing u mentioned whipe in "you can just flash the rom from recovery with wipe (recommended).?
last.5. I already found the stock firmware i have now and ive downloaded it for later if i need to restore it. but what is the tar file you mentioned in the end?
Thanks Man. I appreciate it.

sorry, this is not meant to be offensive but you have a lot to read. There're some good tutorials on how to flash your phone here on xda. search for it.
short answers to your questions:
1. jvt or jw1 are versions of stock samsung roms
2. I think he means if you are on a jvt rom you should only flash custom roms for jvt
3. settings>about phone
4. wipe means resetting the phone, deleting cache and dalvik-cache
no matter what u know u first should know about flashing stock roms..in case u mess something up u will need to flash the stock roms, its a good thing that u have already downloaded these..then u should know how to install kernels to root n have Clockworkmod recovery, then u will be able to flash custom roms..u should serach the net for these questions with a 'How to' at first...
Instruction for new ROM installation
There are basically 2 methods for flashing a ROM
1. CWM recovery menu mode
2. Download mode.
1. For CWM recovery mode you phone must be rooted with CWM, just put the ROM zip file in sdcard of your phone of your choice. then power off the phone. Then you may want to boot in reovery mode for this use pressing and holding 3 button combination simultaneaously as Volume UP + Home key + Power key now you should be booted in to recovery mode there just wipe data/factory reset then wipe cache from option then find and select install from sdcard -> chose file zip from sdcard and press power key to selct and start flashing. wait max 5 min and your phone will be booted with new rom of your choice.
2. Boot in to download mode by pressing and holding 3 button combination simultaneaously as Volume down + Home key + Power key now you should be booted in to download mode now connect your phone with PC and open odin in PC then select ROM file as PDA, PHONE & CSC under propoer boxes then click start - wait max 5 min and you phone will be booted in to new rom.
Thanks

I am really confused with a lot of things... If someone can please clear some concepts for me... I have a Samsung I9000 Galaxy S.. I am pretty sure its the UK version... Now i have Eclair 2.1-update1 Exclair XWJM2... I would love to have Froyo 2.2 but dont know where to start off... Flashing?? what does it mean?? How can i Install the ROMS posted by the users?? I really do not want to brick my phone... Please help me and guide me to where to start off...
Thanks in advance
This is going to be a pretty stock standard reply, firstly asking you whether you have 3 button recovery mode? if you dont then go no further.
If however you do than flashing a rom whether it be stock or custom is pretty straight forward. Stock roms from samfimware are flashed through odin with all the "how to flash guides" available on there site where as most of the custom roms are flashed through clockworkmod.
Id sugest flashing through odin with a stock rom then as you learn more try custom roms through cwm.
For newbies like myself, isnt Odin risky?
I am pretty sure about it that i have the 3 button recovery mode because when i press volume down key + home key and power button it goes to download mode... I did use Odin to flash a ROM ... i did put XXJPK for my i9000 and it was fast but too many bugs then i tried to do a reg hack to install the official froyo through kies however it installed the JM1 instead...
I am on the samfirmware website and downloading the latest firmware.. i think i might be able to handle the update from here... thanks for the help...
Why not just go through KIES? Go to the samsung website and download it.

Wont work through kies..
Well i went to www.samfirmware.com and downloaded the upgrade and using the steps which are explained in other posts i was able to install the froyo 2.2
Similar steps to these ones:
i9000XXJP2 Instructions
1.Remove the battery from your phone
2.Remove the SIM Card and MicroSD Card from your phone
3.Place the battery back on the phone
4.Hold down the HOME button, Volume Down button, and Power On button
5.You should now see a Download screen
6.Open Odin 3 v1.0
7.Click on the button “PIT” and load the “s1_odin_20100512.pit” file
8.Click on the button “PDA” and load the “I9000XXJP2-REV03-PDA-CL464213.tar” inside of the firmware download’s .rar file.
9.Click on the button “Phone” and load the “MODEM_I9000XXJP2.tar” inside of the firmware download’s .rar file.
10.Click on the button “CSC” and load the “GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJP2.tar” inside of the firmware download’s .rar file.
11.Click the checkbox next to: “Re-Partition”
12.Your settings should now look like Figure #2
13.Plug your phone into your computer with USB Debugging on
14.Look at the gallery below to see if everything is going right
15.Once done, your phone will boot up
good to hear now just flash a dif kernel and lag fix and all will be good.
Now i m stuck on custom rom installation. I can install the versions provided on samfirmware.com but how can i install a custom rom? When i download a custom rom the zip file has many files not sure what to do with it.. How can i do that update.zip and stuff... Any help is appreciated.
You'll have to read in the instructions in the threads where you got the custom rom from..
Probably need CWM if you're downloading zip files
My Galaxy Ace is stuck in a reboot loop after trying to flash 2.3.6 onto it, when it had 2.3.5 on it previously.
I've used ODIN and no matter what firmware I try to flash onto it, it just goes into a reboot loop.
Any idea how to fix it?
Did you try to do a wipe?

press down home button and then power on phone ...--> you will enter into recovery mode .
select wipe with help of volume keys and there you go out of bootloop
My Galaxy Ace is also in some sorta reboot loop.
Everything was working fine with it (phone is rooted and CWM installed) until I did a phone reset because I was giving the phone to my gf. After doing this the phone reboots, the blue samsung logo plays (without sound) and then repeats ad-infinitum. I can get into recovery mode and download mode ok and I've tried wipe and even restored a CWM backup (it says it was successful) but the phone just keeps rebooting. I can see the phone in odin but I've never tried to flash anything onto it and quite frankly I'm unsure whether it would just make things worse (if it needs to go back to Samsung for repair). Any help would be appreciated...
If you have cwm ..why dont you download some custom rom like cm7and flash it ..that would bring your phone back to life ...then you can downgrade to stock rom if you want ...and btw in cwm try cache partition , clear data /factory reset and clear dalvik cache ..see if it boots after you do this ..

when i always flash by odin or by cwm i always do wipe , wipe cache and wipe dalvik, this helps me everytime
I managed to flash a firmware from samfirmware and it fixed the reboot.
Now my issue is when I connect to Kies, it says there's an updated firmware for the phone but it fails every attempt to install it. I went back to samfirmware and found this firmware: S5830ZSKPD ## but when I download and extract it there's only 1 x MD5 file and 1 x DLL file?! The other firmware had the 4 or 5 files needed to include in Odin... any ideas guys?
I think its a "one package file " ..I forgot the correct name but there is some option like that in odin ..dont worry it contains all the required files ..and if you are scared to do it then go to you tube ..there are many tutorials showing it then...

Yep, that's exactly what it was, thanks again.
Unfortunately with this firmware, Kies doesn't recognise it and provides no info.
I flashed back to the older firmware... I'll just have to keep experimenting I guess.

Well I could flash it with Odin if I had the firmware but I don't.
It appears it's not available on SamFirmware.com
Do you know where I can download the following firmware?
PDA:KPD / PHONE:KPD / CSC:KPC (THL)
Thanks
Lol I cant understand those firmwares ..can you tell me which version of android you want like 2.3.4/2.3.5/2.3.6 ...then ill be able to help you wanr

Thanks anyway but I managed to find the firmware online and flashed it using Odin.
Now Kies says I'm using the latest which is a good start : )
Now I just need to find a way to root my SGS2 GT-I9100T
U can try a custom ROM from the Developer's forums here.
I also once stucked in the Reboot Loop..............
But then I installed a custom or if you want features from a official Rom, you can install Stock Based custom ROm from the Developer forums of Galaxy Ace. Really good Rom have been made by the developers
In the chance that someone else is looking for this latest OEM firmware update:
PDA:KPD / PHONE:KPD / CSC:KPC (THL)
It can be downloaded from: http://translate.googleusercontent....flgljh&usg=ALkJrhiMpHV83dugh4RGwhKpyjIrYIgn2Q
It is in "one part file" format and can be flashed using Odin.
whatever may be the problem ......just rem to keep a backup of ur previously used rom and just flash it with cwm...
Progress?

If your phone is samsung captivate, you can try to flash stock captivate rom with odin.
There is captivate forum in xda: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=703

Oh, i'm sorry. If you can't go to download mode with "vol down + home + power" combo, i think that you need usb jig. You can make it yourself or buy it somewhere.

ODIN (choose GT-I9000): http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=5&t=1&o=1
Stock rom (choose I9000XWJVZ): http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9000&r=1#regiona
This stock rom come without root, so if you want it, you can flash some custom kernel e.g semaphore. Flash stock rom first and then flash custom kernel also with odin (kernel goes to bootloader box in odin).
Semaphore kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112908
edit: You need to register to sammobile if you want to download.
ok..thanx for that..but can i go for a custom ROM rather than a stock one? plz gime the ODIN for that aswell..really appreciate ur help!!

Yes you can flash custom rom, but first flash stock rom. Most custom roms are cwm flashable, so you don't need odin to flash those.
- Flash stock rom with odin.
- Flash semaphore kernel with odin.
- Download some JVZ based custom rom from here.
- Put custom rom (whole zip, don't extract) to internal sdcard.
- Go to recovery (shut down phone, then press and hold vol up + home + power). When recovery menu appear, press vol up/vol down to move and power to confirm.
- Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, then go to advanced menu and wipe dalvik cache.
- When all wiped go back main menu of recovery and choose "install zip from sdcard" then "choose zip from sdcard".
- Find custom rom's zip file and flash it.
- Reboot your phone.
- Enjoy
ur the best man!!! am just waiting to fix the brick n then i do as above!!
i went into this state as of i cudnt get into recover, wen i did thru CWM i couldnt open the update.zip..it was strange..lets c!!
thanx a million!

done!!!!!!! hi 5 to u dude!!! am on darky ROM..i want to go to ICS..cm9...
Hi all,
firstly I would like to mention that I know that there are a lot of tutorials how to do this..but..I currently can't find the instructions to the latest "stock ROM" (I think its JW6 - if I am not correct feel free to correct me) root..
I would like to know these things:
1) How to root mentioned phone with this ROM?
2) I am not pretty sure but with my HTC WildFire S I didn't need to flash "kernel"? What it is and am I right that i need to flash it?
3) Will I have recovery (like CWM, ..) right after root or will I need to make some more to get recovery?
Sorry for posting this kind of answers - I think that they are already answered but I am little "confused" from information which I get from the internet.. I have already rooted and flashed custom ROM to my HTC WildFire S but with Samsung it looks for me quite "strange" and I really don't know what to do and I also don't want to end up with broken phone..
Thx all which will help me
First you need to download Odin and the Samsung USB driver.
Then download the root file from here. Search for JW4 since there is no root file for JW6. JW4 will work just fine.
Unpack the root file you downloaded.
Boot your device into Download mode by holding down the volume down + home + power buttons.
Open Odin and click AP. Then select the root file (.tar) you downloaded.
Connect your device to the computer and click Start (Make sure re-partition is not checked).
That's it.
Yes you will have CWM Recovery. To boot into CWM Recovery hold down the volume up + home + power buttons.
Hope this helps.
Guys, last compatible version of Odin for i9000 was 1.83, period.
Use JVU or JVZ as only those contain the bootloader you need for any 4.x custom ROM, no other Gingerbread firmware contains it.
@KoFiler on HTC you needed just a custom recovery. Here is the same, but as the recovery can not be flashed on i9000 separately, the package "zImage" contains also the kernel. So you must find a custom kernel that matches the firmware and flash it with Odin to get the custom recovery in package.

Hi everybody
Im new here and to flahing new Roms and stuff.
i believe my phone is bricked and im struggling to get it opperational. Here is what happened...
I have a GT-N7000 on 4. 1. 2 Jelly Bean, which i rooted and flashed to custom ROM CynoganenMod 12 on 5. 0 Lollipop. All was going fine, i rooted my phone, installation went accordingly. After a week or so whithout any problems, my phone started to freez, slag and hang which it never did before, so i decided to flash it back on 4. 1. 2 Jelly Bean I did all as is step by step on Odin 3.-v1.8. When my booted, it booted into System Recovery...
reboot system now (I did)
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage (I did)
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partion
apply update from cache

Nothing seems to work, so when i pull out the battery but it back and press "Volume down, Menu and Power button it takes me to the screen with the Warning and yellow triangle where i can install a custom ROM...
Volume up : Continue
Volume down : Cancel ( restart ) (I did)
When i Volume up it takes me to...

My problem is i have no clue what my PDA nor my CSC code is. Im from South Africa and not sure either which of these are correct.... XFV, XFC, XFM, XFA (im not network locked) so i dont know which firmware to flash with Odin to make my phone opperational again? Any help please guys.

I have tried Phillz and did as you suggested. Im confident that i dont have the correct firmware. I downloaded this from Sammobile : N7000XXLSZ_N7000OJVLSB_N7000LSO_HOME.tar.md5.
Not sure how to go about this....
Doesn't matter what firmware you had.. Once you do a factory reset you can flash any rom made for the n7000
Were you able to get into Philz cwm recovery after you flashed the kernel?
Hi there.
I am happy to report that my phone is back to its original state. Phew, that wat too close for comfort.
I figured that it was obivously bricked or something close to it.
The problem was that i repartitioned it with the wrong PIT file and wrong kernel. Why i did that, i dont know? So i found firmware i thought would be the correct one! In its bricked state i copied the file superuser to my external, so can unzipit in CWM recovery. I download a file flashprogram Samsung N7000 +Pit. I then unzipped it and found the .Pit file which i flashed onOdin3 v1.85 at the same time with the firmware, have it repartitioned, and install the firmware.
It passed with success. Go Green!!! )
It booted to Philz recovery and installed the zip file superuser, took your advice then rebooted.
My phone switched on but a page came up where i had to give a password decrypting the device storage. Freaked out repeated the same prosesswith Odin and it started up normaly and suprised to see it restored to its original state* *smile*
*Just be carefull not to go flash the wrong stuff on your phone if your not sure what you are doing ( like i did! )*
I took your advice to heart and want to thank you for your expertieze. I learned alot from my phone the past 3days.
Regards.Johan
