Hi,
No need to delete anything or do factory reset.
Download semaphore kernel and flash it ontop of the current one using ODIN or kernel flasher application that you can download from the Market.
You wont loose any installed application or settings.
No wipes nor factory reset. Just put the new kernel in PDA section of ODIN, plug phone in download mode and start. Two things to be careful: 1-Disable lagfix. 2-Make sure you have downloaded the proper version of Semaphore (for JVQ).

Just to be clear, can you mix kernels with custom roms or are they specific? Would there be any advantage in doing this? Wondering if that would be a fix for an audio (high gain mic recording) issue on my phone.
Thanks

It is an animation showing when your screen going to turn off. Most of the custom ROM have this feature. You are on Darky 10.2EE right. That ROM have this feature. Enable All animation in Display settings.
You can find the kernel you want on the xda development page and you can flash it either via odin or kernel flasher without wiping anything

new kernel
First of all sorry if this is in wrong thread. 2ndly, I have never had this problem before but today when I tried to flash a new kernel something weird went wrong and now when i boot my phone it is super laggy and screen is all messed up. I deleted caches and dalvik cache but it is still doing the same thing. I dont know what I did wrong since I've done this before and I don't think its the kernel since it doesn't seem like anyone else has had this problem. Btw, the new kernel I tried flashing was franko's r133 build. I previously had r130 and no problems but when I went to flash the new one this morning it like totally messed up my screen and whatever else. I'm so confused. Again sorry if this is in wrong spot. Thanks for any help.

I recently did my first flash.
I am on seeARMS rom (JL2) using the SOK (super optimized kernal) via 2.2 froyo
Basically I flashed the Kernal via ODIN then the ROM via CWM recovery.
I have this speedmod kernal that I did not use. I am curious to try it out. My question is simple, do I have to use ODIN to flash the .pda .tar file or can I just put it on my internal SD and boot into recovery (CWM) then select install from zip and locate the .tar ?
do both work ? do I have to change anything else ? remove lag fixes ? do I lose data ? etc. or is it just simple as changing kernels as often as you want via CWM ?
Sorry about the newb question.. I'm learning.

Disable the lagfix and all tweaks, clean your dalvik cache, cache, dl the CWM speedmod put it in the root sdcard, install from zip, and you good to go. It shouldn't affect your actual Rom nor your apps.
do both work? Yes
do I have to change anything else? No*
remove lag fixes? No, but I feel saver when I do
do I lose data? No
etc. or is it just simple as changing kernels as often as you want via CWM? Yes, it's really comfortable
*The kernels don't care about the tweaks of the others
Hi folks,
I have just flashed to Gingerbread 234-JVR and want to ROOT.
From the thread "Root on Galaxy S with JVR & Speedmod Kernel" I understand the stock JVR has insufficient space to install busybox and superuser, and needs a kernel for JVR that has a script to remove some unwanted/unnecessary system file(s) to free up space to allow ROOTing to occur.
Would someone point me to a set of easy-to-follow instructions to replace the kernel, please?
I had been planning to use Z4Root unless there's a better/easier option?
As always, I'm grateful for the tips & advice from forum members.
Regards,
Dave

which kernel did u flash ?
CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVR-v4.1-CWM3RFS
Hi.
Did u flash with Odin? If so what is the procedure just to falsh the kernel and not the Rom? Can you help?
i still find flashing via odin the easiest way... Heimdall is good though
I tried SuperOneClick but failed. Custom Roms is the easiest way Unless you want to stay on stock.
Flash with the ODIN this way: Put kernel file as a PDA and DO UNCHECK RE-PARTION, righ?

Flash with Odin, no pit and no repartition.

Hey guys, stuck in a bootloop after attempting to flash Fugumod on CM7.1 stable on my Samsung i9000 rom as per the title!
Any ideas?
Thanks for the help in advance
had the same problem. Just flash back to stock using Odin as long as you can get into Download Mode. Can you?
Yup can get into download and clockwork no prob. Back to the stock cm7.1 kernel? Where would i find the .tar for that? Or any other .tar that would let me boot and backup everything?
Cheers!
having the same problem...
I've tried Glitch, Platypus and neither of them can pass the boot screen.
But Fugu works in a mod rom based on CM7.1.
Would anybody help us?
I flashed Glitch and booted no prob. Seems a tad unstable though and would prefer to flash back to the stock cm7.1 kernel. Anyone know where to find just the kernel?

Flash the CM7.1 rom again without any WIPE.
If you do wanna backup the stock kernel, after doing what I mentioned above, try SGS Kernel Flasher to extract the kernel.
This is the first time I've had this happen - see many others in similar situation but now it's me :-(
I was rocking the most stable, smooth and battery- life- loving setup of ICS ever on my i9000 after trying almost all of the Roms and kernels out there.
In the end the Elite7.1Beta worked amazingly for me and I set it all up just nice and really had no reason to start messing with it.
....So I messed with it (to get even better battery life) and flashed the B6 ICY Glitch kernel and then - bootloop.
So I need an ICS/CM9 tar kernel file (any with CWM recovery will do) that I can use to reflash the original Devil 15.1 kernel.
Believe me, I've searched and serched and simply cannot find a tar version of any of the main ICS kernels out there (glitch, semaphone, devil etc). Why are there no more tar files anymore? Am I missing something?
I've even tried extracting the kernel from boot.img using cygwin and a tutorial I found on the net - but being an untran00b I did something horribly wrong and now thank goodness I can still get Download mode.
So:
Can someone please let me know where I can find a .tar kernel for ICS/CM9 that I can flash with Odin? Or how to make one from a kernel .zip or boot.img file?
OR: Can I just flash a boot.img in Odin (doesn't look like it but just wondering?) I'v not tried that because I've messed this up enough already.
Any help greatly appreciated

well i was in the same situation and i didnt have ssdd48 to help me ..
try his method i have read that it works .. if not i believe there is a speedmod kernel which has a tar file google that
for me eventually nothing worked so i had to flash a gingerbread rom thru odin and start over .. good luck
Thanks for the replies guys. Managed to fix it in the end using Darkcore kernel which gave me working recovery (even though Gingerbread based) but really appreciate you linking me the recovery file ssdd48.
Cheers!
I have the same problem with B6!! But I use the ssdd48 way, and it works perfectly (really thanks), after that y flashed again B6 via CWM and it works fine.
I might be wrong but doesn't Heimdall support flashing boot.img?
Sent from my GT-I9000
Thanx man ! I've Been waiting for a fix reocery tar for ICS.

hey mate, when you flash a kernel you dont lose any data right? I only need to get into CWM because I get bootloops and then I will reflash semaphore kernel
should "auto reboot" in odin be enabled?

Interesting.
I just re-flashed the ROM via CWM.
It includes a kernel.
If that didn't work, I'd use the kernel cleaning script, and the re-flash the ROM.
Hi,
I tried to flash the datafix for CM9 but it got me into a bootloop (using semaphore 1.0.1s kernel).
I flashed this file to fix the recovery but from here things aren't going so well...
I tried to restore my nandroid backup - didn't work (tried to restore only /system though, but saw it failed).
then I tried to reflash CM9 (19.4 nightly) - failed.
then I tried to reflash the semaphore kernel - succeeded but now my phone is stuck on the "galaxy S gt-1900 screen" (I can get into the recovery though, the one included in the fix).
What can I do now? I can't even get my phone to boot...
Thanks!

Anyone?
Yes!
I was having the same problem, for 2 times now actually. The first time I had to go all the way back to gingerbread. Now it happened to me a second time, I searched again and found a solution.
I think the rescue .tar doesn't have the right CWM in it to install the ICS rom. I've found a Odin installable kernel with the right CWM, its here:

I hope this helps more people in this situation!

We can many find impressive custom kernel like franco kernel or speedmod in Note. I want to flash one of those great kernel, but just in case, I want to back up my stock kernel because maybe I need to flash It back. Could you tell how to back up my stock kernel and flash my phone back to STOCK kernel ? I have Mobile Odin but never used It yet. I think this thread is about ROM not Kernel.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Thank you
PS :I use N7000DXLP9
As far as I know you cant backup just the kernel. But you can download it from one of the threads in development section if you ever need it again.
Does install ROM from this thread through Mobile Odin

Will bring my phone to stock kernel ? I think ROM and Kernel is different think in Android because we ROM (for example CM 9) can be flashed with different kernel.
Yes installing one of the roms you linked will also install a stock kernel.

You can try ChainFire's CF-Root kernel. That's about as closest as you can, in getting back your stock kernel without flashing back the whole ROM itself.
still the answer is not clear !

Yes, stock kernel can alone be flashed without flashing the whole rom, you can download your stock kernel from this thread and then use pc odin (in .tar format) or mobile odin (if in zimage or .tar format) to flash it.
