Andoid on Treo 750 - Palm Treo 750 ROM Development

Hi Experts
Is there a way to install Android on Palm Treo 750?
THANKS!

Well there are a lot of things to consider, namely:
1. Our processors are slow. Dead slow when it comes to running the latest programs like Opera Mobile 10.
2. RAM. Just not enough.
3. Storage space. Looks like it's not enough either, although Android can be run from a card, I think.
3. Most importantly, screen size. About 2.5 inches at 240x240, I was lucky enough to even find the WM6.5.x builds that supported that resolution natively. I hear the Lowest Android ever went was 320x480, but even if the OS can be usable for 240x240, there's the apps to consider.
Now I'm not saying it's impossible, simply because I never tried, but looking at the above points, it doesn't look good.

well, it is really possible, ram not a problem since it can run as a third party app from a sd.
screen sice there are 240x240 android phones, althought really rare, i personally have only used 320x320
as you can see it is really possible, however there is this only problem, in order for it ti work a developer must make an android rom designed specifically for the treo 750, and it means staring from 0, so it would only be possible if someone is decised to do it.

noob WM6 questions

Hallo, I finally dismissed my chicken outfit and flashed htc's wm6 rom onto my wm5 (the thrill !!).
With all today plugins off except for BatteryStatus (the latest beta), and the phone turned on, after a soft reset I get a paltry-ish 15M of program memory, changing magically to about 19M after a while (why ? dunno). Of course that then leaks slowly but surely and I'm sure we wouldn't want it any other way.
Is this the memory I'm supposed to get ?
Also, as a further term of assessment & comparison: the device is OC'ed to 260 via BatteryStatus, and I tried ThrottleLauncher on it (http://www.throttlelauncher.com/portal/index.php/pruebas/34-public-releases/76-092beta#tutorial). In spite of the OC, it seemed slow and clumsy.
Is it because
a) the herald's cpu is slow and there's no BS that can help it
b) throttlelauncher is aimed at faster devices or is still in development
c) stock wm6 is for some reason slower than say a custom rom under which throttlelauncher might work like a breeze
?
Thanks
stock wm6 is sooooooooooooo slow. if u want a clean stable rom, try open touch 5.2 org. that's what i use and u can manually disable the htc home plugin under settings>today and put everything back on to look like stock rom, but itll still be much faster than stock, and if u run bs, itll be smooth and quick
all of the above. period
I have in the past few days read maybe a hundred billion posts, and I am by now almost subliminally convinced that cooked roms are faster than stock, BUT
what is it exactly that makes the stock rom go slow ?
I mean, speaking of computers, short of replacing drivers for this or that feature, the pesky 200mhz cpu stays the same. On a desktop I may gain performance-wise if I turn off services, but I get no cookie for just deleting stuff from /Windows.
And how does the program memory really influence speed ?
(From the presumption that it looks more like "amount of stuff you can run at once" rather than "the more you have the smoother you go", at least to the untrained - mine - eye.)
the build of the custom roms is newer (therefore, better?) and there are less background processes running, which takes up the cpu. This is where the "more memory equals more performance" mantra comes from.
you can overclock, of course, and the stock rom usually comes with this HUGE pagepool thats just plain downright unneeded.

X1 (n97) - a lot of help needed

Hi,
I`m new to this forums , but I find it quite impressive.
First of all, Im here to ask for an advice, any help would be quite appreciated.
Im looking to buy new phone and my decision is either xperia x1 or nokia n97.
I believe everyone here will tell me that x1 is the way to go for its customisability , but I would like to say what are my needs and maybe it will be easier to help me with the decision.
Right now I have sony ericsson P910 , pretty old smartphone with symbian OS (7.0 ??) , and I managed to find some software for it which I use, and thats the exactly software I would like to continue to use on my new phone, and some new ones.
I intend to be online almost at all times , to administrate some sites, meaning need fast good browser, irc program, msn, remote desktop also, maybe some ftp client as well, and all of that to be active at all times.
Also some blacklisting call manager (maybe now every newer phone has it ?), pdf reader, office package, but thats not a priority.
I must say Im somewhat concerned about reported slowness of x1, but I see there are some custom roms that may be better, but reading these forums its seems to me they are like toys to try and delete if not good, and to tell u the truth I dont have so much time to do flashing of the phone always.
I also read that x1 has more ram memory and faster processor than n97, but then again maybe symbian doesn`t need so much resources ?
so priorities for me are fast system, reliable without much crashing and bugs, and to be able to run all of those software I need.
so here are the questions:
1. Symbian or winmob ( consider the software that I need , remote desktop for example, also speed and resources) ?
2. winmo 6.1 or winmo 6.5 for x1? which is faster in the cleanest form without additional software ?
3. Is it best to go for official sony firmware update R3 or to go for some custom lite ver. rom, if I want only the cleanest and basic rom ? Meaning the speed and reliability ? if some custom rom then which one ?
4. which custom full rom has been reported to be the fastest and with the least bugs ?
5. I must say I would like to use winmo6.5 only cause finger friendly capabilities. If I read correctly there is not and will never be winmo 6.5 officially from sony, so in that case I will have to use some custom rom , so I need suggestion on the fastest and least bugs 6.5 custom rom
And the last thing is the availability and the price:
I can get new x1 for ~320 Euros and that n97 used but in good condition for no less then 400-450 Euros .
Actually i hold that n97 is my hands and is very good and x1 I only saw at pictures.
And btw qwerty keyboard is very important for me so if anyone knows which one has better keyboard pls let me know.
Camera has not any importance to me.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated, Im sorry if some of my questions were already written before, but I wanted to present my situation and to get the best out of it, so once again sorry and your help is very much appreciated.
Cheers,
Srle
P.S. that n97 has version 10 and I read that ver 12 is the newest one, and Im not even sure how to upgrade to the latest one, is it also flashing the device or something other ?
w00t, as a self-proclaimed Symbian fanboy I can be very onjective about your question.
Xperia can do all those things ans can do them better and faster. N97 is the first (failed) attempt from Nokia to make a good touchscreen smartphone (and no xzzprezzzmuzzzik does not count). All users of the N97 are used as beta testers and to point out bugs and wrong design decisions. N97 is buggy, has worse hardware than the X1 and is uglier lol.
Now for the questions:
1 - WinMo is a pocket PC platform with PC-like experience in your pocket while Symbian is just a smartphone one.
2 - 6.1 is still performing better and is still more stable. Might change in the future.
3 - Official R3A for sure. More stable and reliable. Custom ROMs are goos for experimenting and for answering specific needs.
4 - My knowledge is not up to date, but I think "itje" makes pretty good ones.
5 - 6.1 will suit your better.
N97's keyboard is PATHETIC. X1's keyboard is second only to the Touch Pro 2's one.
Oh, by the way, you won't be able to install your programs on the N97. Symbian has no backwards compatibility, in other words, the newer versions of Symbian don't support the programs made for the older versions. You will have to buy/find those apps all over again.
Cheers .

It's good that you are prepared you will get a biased reply to WM.
I am sure you will found WM softwares to fulfill all you needs. Here are my lists of currently using program on WM for your requirement.
Opera 9.5, built in MSN Live & remote desktop, pocket VNC, pocket putty, resco explorer (FTP), Magicall (best call blocker), Foxit PDF reader, SoftMaker office.
6.1 would be a better choice for you since 6.5 consumes more resources for eye candies. And WM has a physical limit of 32 concurrent processes so lite rom (I have one and many other chefs make lite rom too) would be better if you need many programs active all the time
if you go the winmo route and considering the x1, i might suggest the x2 then. or the tp2

indeed. its already thinked over and its x1 or n97 used, which I can get at this point.
But I think I`m leaning towards x1 more atm. Probably gonna buy it at monday when the store will have it.
hopefully it wont be so slow as ppl talks.
I just read that x1 has a problem with the cracks, so Im not so thrilled about it...actually Im not even sure if buying x1 is a good idea :S....
I also recommend you the X1. For WM 6.1 you will find all the software you need and there's even a lot of freeware out there.
What concerns the quality of the hardware I think we have to admit there are some issues with the X1 (which phone has not it's shortcomings) but for me the only thing that I encountered personally is the dissolving of the black painting from the battery cover. And that also moderately. So far I have not seen the famous cracks in the case but maybe I'm just lucky.
All in all I consider the X1 still among the best WM phones on the market. The screen is great, the keyboard very convenient to type, the overall performance is good (WM is not known to be the fastest os out there). A few day's ago my X1 was stolen :-( and I did not hesitate to get a new one (finally I benefit from one of the many assurances I have to pay for every year).
I know it's like always everybody's personal opinion and there will never be a "best phone" on the market. But for me the X1 alsmost perfectly fits my needs. And is far as I see it should also meet yours.
10 months with no cracks here + those cracks are beneath the cover and don't affect the device in any way. People overexaggerate their importance...

On Symbian exist SymRDP, this remote desktop software works extremely well on N97.
X1's keyboard is really, really awesome for the first few months. I really enjoyed typing on the X1 until disaster struck. X1 keyboard is very prone to dust and before you anticipate it, your buttons are registering double keys and they become not responsive.
I'm using Fingerkeyboard full time now and I miss the good old days where I can type a 1000 words article using my X1 keyboard.
Hi guys,
I just yesterday purchased x1 black and it looks and behave pretty awesome.
Bu I already encountered a few problems. I immediately started installing some programs and SPB mobile shell 3.5 and on top of that TouchFlo 3d HD which I dont like, and wanted to delete it. BUt when I go to remove programs It wont delete it, I think because when phone is booting , its already in its memory so it can`t be done that way.
In short how to delete TF3D from my phone?
Or is there some kind of master reset that will erase all the apps I installed ?
Don't even use that ROM? Use another - TF3D shouldn't be in the stock ROM. AT ALL.
In short - install an Xperia ROM without TF3D
I didnt messed with the roms, and I dont intend to just right now. I just installed TF3D .cab and it added itself to today screen.
I really dont want to flash rom just because of this if there is any other solution.
What about hard reset?
Will it erase all my apps and put it back to factory settings?

Yes .
Thanks. I actually did manage to uninstall tf3d without hard reset, maybe this will help someone with the same problem I had.

Kaiser operating systems

hello i have a question...the only two options we have for the kaiser is windows mobile and Android or we can flash it to something else?i bought this cell phone here in greece for 750 euro when it first came out but it's laggy!and i mean really laggy...i tried almost all the roms available but in the end the fastest was the factory one so i came back to it...i was hoping that Android (like every linux system)would run much faster than windows mobile but i had no luck either and the camera-bluetooth issue really annoys me...so is there a way to make this phone fast?either changing the o.s or i don't know maybe another way?i see other htc's like HD2 and Htc Touch II and they are so fast with the menus and everything...not to mention the iphone...jesus christ i press the messages button and it takes about 3 seconds to open the menu and another three seconds to let me start typing...also when i start typing the text start to show after i finished a whole sentence and sometimes is corrupt (characters missing)...anyone else experiencing the same issues?is there something to be done or i just have to get another phone?last i forgot to mention that i used Android with the haret method and not the full flash.is it a big difference?to me it's the same or worse from windows mobile...thanks!
anyone?come on 120 views and 0 reply?
Windows Mobile and Android are the only options. Android is a ported version for the Kaiser and will only run on top of WM. It will never be as good as or as fast as a version running natively because no version was ever made to run on the Kaiser. So for now and in the near ( and far ) future, it is what it is, a slower ported version.
I can't agree with you on the laggyness of the Kaiser or of " all " the custom roms. I have used many and find them at least as fast as stock and in most cases ( due to the lack of carrier bloatware ) much faster.
Are you seriously comparing a 2+ year old phone ( Kaiser ) with a 400Mhz processor and 128Mb of ram with HTC's current flagship model ( HD2 ) with a 1Ghz snapdragon processor and 448 Mb of ram. Gee I wonder why it is faster
2+ years ago, the iPhone didn't even have 3G. You need to compare Apples to Apples and Oranges to Oranges. If you want a blazingly fast . state of the art phone, don't buy a 2+ model year old phone.
For now, try flashing a lite or naked rom. Add only the apps that you want. Get and use a good task manager so that you can easily kill all background tasks and apps that are not being used. Get " Cleartemp " and "Clean Ram"
to clean out unwanted left over files and use KaiserTweaks or Advanced Configuration to tweak the performance. You will feel like you have a new ( 2 year old ) phone.
thanks for the advice...any chance of overclocking the phone?

Well if you are so good at searching, why don't you just search for the answers you need. They are out there and apparently all you have to do is look for them.

I stand corrected, it is tough to keep up on new versions of things you care nothing about. Apparently last month they came out with a version that erases WM and will run from NAND.
Still no Camera, still no Bluetooth, still no Flash,Java or YouTube.
Can't run WM apps, think you are limited on what Android apps can be run. Version still a bit wonky and requires a lot of user input to setup and get working properly, but hey, you get to say that you have Android running on your Tilt.

[q] q touchxperience for omnia2 i8000

Please, I want to ask the program touchxperienc did not work properly I have in my omnia2 i8000
I donated to the TX developer to get in on the beta, because it looks so smooth and good on other phones. It runs like crap on my Omnia II SCH-i920. Jittery, stuttering, shuts down for no reason.
What it comes down to is Samsung writes awful drivers. Their OpenGLES2.0 drivers are terrible, they didn't even bother to write drivers for either the FPU unit (it's just sitting there doing nothing) or OpenGLES1.0. They override a lot of Windows Mobile's APIs with their own proprietary junk, tied to TouchWIZ which is a joke in itself.
The bottom line is, it took a lot of customization and extra cash for a third party UI, just to make my phone as useful as last year's models.

[Q] Benefits of Android on Topaz

Guys,
Let me ask a stupid question... In short and simple words, what are the benefits of replacing windows mobile by Android on a Topaz? Is the device faster? Does this improve the autonomy? Or is it only a scientist interests having an hardware designed for windows working with Android?
Your answer may help me to take the decision to test...
Thanks.
Well Heres a quick Answer
Hey, I'm new here too...
1.) You won't be replacing windows at all.
2.) There won't be a full fledge ROM (replacement for windows) at any point in the near future.
3.) Its nice for apps or general funtime but the phone lasts maybe 50% as long as far as battery life if used normally and most GPS functionality is gone. (crashes phone)
4.) there are a few bugs but that is expected.
5.) Don't let the bugs keep you from trying it out. It may not run as fast or faster than your WinMo but it does have far better features.
P.S. It is at your own risk however to run Android on your phone. I haven;t heard of any issues with bricking phones and in most cases you have little to worry about, plus this Forum has a lot of information to help with such situations, but the possiblity of damage to hardware due to stress or other reasons is still there,

The reason for me to use it on Topaz is for the applications on Android...
Many of them are not available on WinMo 6

Have to agree with that! Android apps are not as good as iPhone one's (I'm no fan boy thou ), but many of them are free and are fun Another point is that you are able to change your home-screen by better ones. In WinMo opportunities are little, but in Android you have Launcher Pro, etc. Love the theming of Android
just an neat alternative to winmo
android mail app is much more convenient, and so are a lot of apps
camera and video recording is slow and not so nice, even on the crappy side.
gaming much more interesting
interface is different but fun and easy
no gps...
no bt..
no usb mass storage or connection...
the device is a tad slower, and tent to be unstable with xandroid, but doable( oc to 650..)
its newer, winmo has a lot of apps, but android is newer
android is google, so all your personal stuff will be used( less with winmo)
ms is still making money on android, so don't be deluded
all in all, its(gb) running good enough to keep it running for daily use.
kinda like android, can't wait for the TD2 Xand rom to appear.
THere is no way to replace winmo on Topaz like HTC HD2 ?
Running xdanroid on sdcard is very slow

Are all the applications on Android available for the diamond 2 which has android?
it is not that slow. The TD2 is not running a snapdragon. Though some racegames tested run fast enough. Most apps seem to run on GB aswell.
.. send from.. xdandroid..
