Post facts about your country - Off-topic

Cool idea for a thread, so:
My country has 2 names: Palestine and Israel
It is where the three religions came to earth: Islam, Christianity, and Jew
Some parts of it are divided using a huge wall to separate the Israeli parts the Palestinian parts.
We have a lot of Mosques and Churches there.
Jesus Christ was born in a city called Bethlehem and it's where most of Christian tourists go.
I think that's enough for now

Cool idea
I´ll fill it later

I live in the U.S.A.
We stick our thumbs in everyone's pie and expect thanks for it.
We as a nation are broke but continue to spend billions to help bail out other countries.
We have almost no export except for wheat, corn, soybeans, and rice.
Although our nation was built on religious freedom and immigration we are trying to thwart both.
And our president is just a big a dumb ass as the prior one.
But with all that being said I'd still rather be living here then anywhere else in the world.

I live in the U.S.A, where private citizens can build massive arsenals of weapons while listening to gangster rap. I love this country so much!

Mmmm,
I'm from Belgium; and we have all.
We have a King, who coast lot of money but don't have power (Just for the chow)
We have a Prince who is waiting to replace his father, bet even the king knows he isn't ready.
Fore the moment still after 207 day's we don't have a government
We have three language communities
The dutch community would like have much.
The France community won't nothing, but thy don't will give something.
The German community; well it's not clear what thy will.
We have a large government deficit; but we saved our banks to sell it to a other country.
Because our country have a large deficit thy decided to sell our public buildings, but now we rent them
We have a minister who is always tired, and he has the power of pensions
Every year our government says that we need to attract foreign companies to settle in Belgium. But in the last years there are more companies who left Belgium.
Our telecomunicate, electricity and gas products are among the most expensive of our neighboring countries.
But I think it's funny here, certainly if your job is Stand up Comedian, our government/country gives you enough stuff to talk/laugh about.

Favorite NFL Team?

I gotta go with the Dallas Cowboys!
But, this year I don't see them going all the way. Romo still has a little more conditioning to do in my opinion. Also, T.O. is out for a couple games. :\
So who is your Favorite NFL Team?
Mine is the one with best record
Romo has been done in by the Jessica! She is nothing but bad luck...
Au contraire, mon ami... the correct answer is the reigning NFL champion Indianapolis Colts.
The Pats are gonna crash and burn...
cowboys
(only because someone gave me 3 cowboys shirts last year-i really don't know why! but they're cool in the summertime...)
I wouldn't be surprised if the colts won the super bowl again this year

Well, I'm am a home town kind of fan. I was born just south of St. Louis so I started out a Cardinal fan. (Yes a Cardinal FOOTBALL fan) I moved to Louisiana in 77 and for over 25 years I tried really really really hard to be a Saints fan........ but they never fail in finding ways to disappoint. Now I live in the Dallas area, so I'm gonna give them Cowboys a try. Ready made dynasty with 5 S.B. championships. I think they are going to be a team I can get behind. Looks like TO has shed the primadonna status and the drama that goes along with it. Just need him back and healthy. Romo has come into his own, but he needs to shed the distraction if you know what I mean. He also needs a little more maturity and experience. If they make it to the Super Bowl, it may be more pressure than he can take.
I have to pull for the Patriots somewhat.... they have one of my kin folk playing on that team (Wes Welker) so I gotta hope he does well.

LOL, I wondered if someone was going to make that offer. I think the folks in St. Louis might pass on that.
I grew up in New Hampshire and have been a life long Patriots fan. I remember watching them get demolished by the Bears in their first Super Bowl. That just makes these last few and this season so much sweeter. I was hoping for two perfect teams this year, but Miami had to blow that by winning a game!
Did any of y'all watch the Pats - Ravens game? I'll prob get flamed now.. but Murderin Ray Lewis and the Ravens went to town on the Pats in that game. I also feel that they won. The time out called on that 4th down play was by a ravens staff member who legally was not allowed to make time out calls. The refs ignored it.
Ravens won that imho.

Yeah i think the Ravens deserved to win that game, but the thing about the Pats is that even though they've almost lost several games, they still pull out the W if even at the last second. Obama - Dream Come True or Disaster?

Hi all,
I think it's fantastic that Barack Obama is President Elect of USA.
As this is an international forum I thought it would be interesting to see whether there is a difference of opinion between US Citizens, and those outside the US. I am British.
What do you think of Barack Obama's success in the election? What are your hopes, expectations, fears and concerns about for his administration?
It would be helpful for the purpose of discussion to state whether or not you are a US Citizen if it's not in your profile.
Cheers,
andrew-in-woking
I am a U.S. citizen and I believe it's a great thing. I'm not so sure he'll be the greatest man ever to be elected to office, but I know we dodged a bullet by not electing McCain/Palin. Imagine George Bush with a Vice President that considers herself experienced in foreign relations because she lives across the Bering Straight from Siberia... What a joke.
I live in the south and I think that the old days of the racist guard are over. It's an amazing thing, and I have a gut feeling he could be a historic president outside of the black thing. I was over joyed last night and even got a little misty eyed...and this is coming from someone who is a staunch Nader supporter. It's so amazing to see my state go blue!

Sir, I commend you and your state... From the south, you still turned up blue. It's great to see states like NC and VA (who hadn't voted Democrat in over 40 years) making the right decision. This election has renewed a bit of the faith I had lost in the American people as a whole, the ability to see beyond race and beyond the fancy credentials and realize what this nation really needs. Congratulations to all Americans, and let's just wait for the day... What is it, 01/20/2009? This was one hell of a first election for me, great way to start voting.
I'm in Italy, very far from US, and maybe i dont know anythiiii...
But from first sight, i did non trust McCain. I was more disappointed, when i saw Madame Palin.
Cannot say i trust Obama, as i dont know his politic history; but i thik he's better.
We will see in the near future.
I think the idea of this being a "historic" election is over rated, and also the most racially charged one. There is no way anybody can convince me there wasn't a large voting block that voted for Obama purely on the bases they considered him "black". It should be written in the history books the US elected a mixed race president. To label him "black" is a slap in the face of his "white" mother.
I for one am sick of the concept of "race". I reject the racial color lines and do not subscribe to any race other than the human race. There will be forever racial tension as long as we label ourselves "black" or "white". It's time we give up our whiteness or blackness, and everything in between. It creates division and doesn't promote any unity.
Having said all that, I will support the new president and wish him well. My only fear is, it doesn't matter who is president, it's our senators and congressmen that controll this country's destiny. And unfortunately they are controlled by the highest bidder.
Hi,
I'm from Austria and watched the whole election night on CNN Int. and other local senders. I think its a very good first step. Obama can't do it any worse than Bush did it the past 8 years and I think he will be better than McCain too. There's a chance that the US now can fix their broken image in the world and fix their problems in the country itself. Hope it works.
One more thing: I didn't consider McCain to be a big problem as president, but I didn't like to see Palin as vicepresident. You can say what you want, but with 72 years theres a higher risk to become unfit to be president, than with 47. And in that case Palin would have been a disaster for both, the world and the US - imho.
So, my best wishes to the US citizens. I think it was the right choice.

That's exactly what it comes down to... I don't think Obama is our Lord and savior, I simply think he's better for the country than another George Bush. McCain loved to say "they say I vote with George Bush 90% of the time, but I'm not George Bush." Well obviously you're not, but ****, 9 out of 10 is 9 out of 10! 10% better than the last 8 years is not good enough.
It's a disaster unless you'll be one who will enjoy the benefits of socialism. "Spreading the wealth" isn't something that helps the economy or promotes job growth. Raising taxes stifles the economy and increases dependency on government programs.
So whether it's a good thing or not is subjective to whether you make money or take money.
I have a job. His proposed tax changes will hurt me more than help me and I don't make that much money. And by "not much" I mean not much more than a full time wal-mart checkout person.

Many Republicans and Democrats vote straight ticket, this is no different then a black man voting solely on race. They are both dumb reason to vote. That being said I just can't see how anyone can say this is not historical. I agree with you on the labels thing though.

You're right, we should stay in Iraq for another decade like McCain wants, spending $12 billion a month, I'm sure that'll lead to tax cuts... Oh wait, how does that math work? Oh that's right, it doesn't. Considering Obama said the only tax hikes will be for people with $250k+ salaries, I don't think your "not much better than Wal-Mart salary" will suffer as much as you think. I guess you can call me a taker, because I, along with much more than half of the planet, forget our country, agree that Obama is a much better selection. I don't recall many times Obama mentioned in his campaign that he was black, he didn't use it as a leverage point at all. That's why the likes of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton failed so miserably in their political escapades, it was all about race. With Obama, he showed how he can change the nation, not with his skin color but with his intelligence and his views... McCain just brought up being held captive 5 decades ago and hoped that would pull him through.

Actually it does. The more money people have the more they can spend, which for sure will boost the economy.
Socialism. What is that exactly? Please explain
And another thing: Its true Obama didn't run against Bush, but McCain did. If there weren't the last 8 years McCain could have won this. But unfortunately for him, Bushs politics failed over and over again, which naturally strengthened all political enemies. And one of those is Barack Obama.

Very well said sir. I actually did not vote for either of the two more popular candidates. I agree "there will be forever racial tension as long as we label ourselves "black" or "white." Why can't we all be called Americans. Isn't that what makes American great? That no matter where you came from or what ethnicity you are, you are still an American first. Not Mexican American or African American, Asian American, Italian American, German American, etc. why not just be American.
I agree that it is important to keep and cherish historic traditions and customs. Each different ethnic group brings something good to this country and it's important to recognize that. Maybe this election will help bring this country closer together. There is no doubt some real tension is surrounding this country. I would like nothing more than Americans to come together.
I for one will give Barack Obama a fair shot. In his speech last night he said, "And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn – I may not have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your President too."
His speech was excellent last night. He is a great orator and I am encouraged by his presence and hope that he does well. I trully do.

I agree with you. I never thought I would say that. We are spending way to much in Iraq and need to leave as soon as we can. I don't think that John McCain wanted to spend another decade in Iraq but that is neither here nor there now.
President Bush spent money like a Liberal. I have never seen a Republican candidate spend so much money. It's funny that Republicans run under the platform and spending but many of them as just as bad as there Liberal counterparts. I hope that Barack Obama reduces military expenditures like the one in Iraq and direct this attention to Afghanistan.
I am not however going to argue with you concerning the tax increases for people of 250k+. If he does that it will be curious to see what effect this will have on the real economy.
...but remember when you start taxing companies that will entice them to seek else where to incorporate. Which takes the jobs with them. I just hope that we can come to a middle ground because the real problem of America are not going to be settled overnight. With a clear majority in both the House and Senate the Democrats will have complete control of everything.

Do realize that 90% of current America from around 1920 on has embraced socialist ideas?
Have you been to college? This is a socialist ideal, you give tuition which is then spread throughout to help out say a sports program you have nothing to do with. In turn the money the sports program makes is then spread (usually unequally) to academics. So are you also anti college because of it's evil socialist agenda?
How about police and fireman? They are paid through taxes which "share the wealth" to those agencies. Ever notice how some wealthy small towns have over the top police departments? This is because the "wealth" is being distributed there. Are you also against fireman and police?
How about your highway and roads? Should we abolish these because the "wealth is spread around"?
You would probably answer no to all three. So actually research stuff before you start making broad over dramatic statements about something you know nothing about. Americans have such a narrow view of socialism because of our involvement in Vietnam and our hastiness to decry anything slightly socialist.
Obama has socialist ideals, this makes him no more a socialist then you if you pay taxes or went/go to college.
I'm from Canada and I'm pretty happy with who won. Mind you...I'm a conservative at heart and always will be, but with the two men that were running, I think the best man for United States won. Years from now, history will tell us if it was a good thing or bad. Until such time, the storm has to be weathered.
...oh...and for those wondering, Canada is more or less a socialist country.

Wow!
I think with those atractives nobody will refuse to go Amsterdam! (Never been there)
An oh..of course that was the creation place, so now number 2 on the list:
2. When?
When? That my friend we don't know...
Hello all,
I am in the hospitality business and organise events for a number of blue chips – in short my company is the best in the business.
I get good rates on hotels, restaurants and have excellent connections for all things conference throughout Europe. So if Italy, Spain, Portugal, South Africa, Uk or Ireland is a possible venue for the proposed event, I will be happy to get involved. I am a big fan of XDA.
Work is on going on our website just now so I am aware that a number of pages need updating... its in the hands of the HTML engineer... link in my signature if ya wanna have a look at what we do.
Best,
J
This would be pretty cool however i've never seen it work out in any other forum. I think the best thing to do would be to create a poll and see where most people are located. Say there's a bundle in California, then we could have one in LA or some place close to all Californians. Same thing for other states, countries, even cities, etc. We could then all share our experiences. As for me, i'm in Southern California, hence the reason i used it
More or less this event might take place in the US or somewhere in Europe...only few asian are here...
It is a nice idea. Make it a convention and invite some guest speakers to show off the future of mobile devices, have reps from HTC and others perhaps like Sony, Motorola, Nokia, Jabra, etc... showing off newest gadgets and gear - Workshop seminars and stuff like that. It could be a fun time to meet some of our members in person, talk, show off our devices and envy the other person's device and a good learning opportunity as well.

it won't be an eyeball anymore. It will look like a convention, a meeting, etc. And that will be boring because everyone should be formal. Just an "ORDINARY' but "GRANDacious" eyeball.. exclusively fro XDA-DEV members and if you like we can invite M$ as our guest speaker..LOL
Just a regular GRAND EYEBALL, just to meet each and everyone here at XDA-DEV. No paper works, no signing up just beer and phones and girls too...

Agree with the poll
Starting form there we can see how many would like to attend and where most people is located
But I must say that I agree with Daveshaw that the best place should be where all this started: Amsterdam!
So who is going to create the poll?
Yeah, Amsterdam would be great! And there will be raffle promos and HTC Devices giveaways courtesy of all xda-dev's moderators and admins... Come one let's make this happen.
Great poll!
LOL
Last option looks pretty cool!
hehehe if that last option wins...you got to pay my expenses going to your place!

hmmmmm... What about in France or in Miami..hehe but f course everything will be expensive but if we will go in Philippines or China or Malaysia, money will worth double that means double the fun. Or we can just go to xplode's house

just a cent from a newbee, i hope this great idea will happen sooner...
i agree however that safety, next of course to resources, is definitely the issue needed to be considered by anyone else. but who's safe nowadays? i dont think there's a better place than our own abode (just be sure our better half is out.. lol)..
a little clarification though about Philippines vis a vis Abu Sayaff (ASG). ASG concentrates mostly in northern part of Mindanao and now being relentlessly pursued. on the otherhand, there are great places in the Philippines particularly in Luzon & Visayas, although as i've said cant be considered safer that our homes. But on the brighter side, your 1$ to Php47.++ is quite noteworthy of consideration.... more than double the fun i guess
Btw, considering the "safety" issue as quoted, i voted for the last option (peace orb...)
cheers...

[Q] "Footballer" vs. "Football Player", for Brits...

Hey folks!
I dunno why, but I had something pop into my head on my way to work today, and I thought I'd ask you fine folks.
This question is directed at British, Australian, and New Zealander members of XDA.
Let us assume you're in a conversation with someone, and they either use the term:
A. Footballer
B. Football Player
Would you automatically assume if they said "footballer" they were referring to that sport which you folks call "football" and we Americans call "soccer", but if the person had said "football player" would you assume they meant American Football?
Thanks in advance!
I'd think English football for both We don't really do American Football haha
Oh, ok.
I know you guys aren't necessarily going to be "into" American Football. lol...
I just didn't know if you considered one or the other to be exclusive.
My ex-girlfriend taught me, for instance, that "rooting for one's team" in Brit/Aussie circles would have a, *ahem* completely different meaning than it does here in the U.S. I didn't know if you had the same degree of differentiation for what you call your athletes.
Groovy. Thanks!

Haha Okay, Wait are you sure? When someone says youre rooting for a team or whatever it means supporting
We usually refer to your version of football as;
"Stop And Go Shiny Helmet Carry Ball"
Sometimes shortened to "American Football"
Go Packers
Also, last I heard football was over because all the players are too busy sleeping with prostitutes to actually play football anymore. That could just be the BBC/Daily Mail scaremongering though.

In the UK, Footballer & football player are the same thing, they mean soccer player.
In Australia, they call it soccer and soccer player...football (footy) is either NRL(National Rugby League) or AFL (Australian Football League).
Well I'm not British but I watch the english premier league a lot and go to a lot of games (btw Bolton are beating Arsenal!!) and I'd assume that when you're talking about a footballer that it's the premier league and a football player is like NFL. That might be because I'm one of of few who actually know how to play NFL football and how the rules work and follow it.

Over here, we call them footballers, football players, the-idiot-who-lost-my-200-dollar-bet-because-he-couldn't-score-from-point-blank, the-sissy-diver, and probably that-ambiguously-gay-dude-who-keeps-hugging-everyone.
Oh, and we call them people who carry the "football" around with their hands retards.
You folks are awesome, and this thread made me laugh. Trust me, today I could do with a laugh, so thanks very much!
My ex-g/f and I had a number of conversations about the differences between Australia/Europe and the U.S. vis à vis both sports and school. She told me few interesting things.
1. Australia doesn't have schools with big sports teams. The notion of big money teams that aren't professional teams is, I gather, essentially an unknown concept.
2. You don't ask "What team are you rooting for?" because "rooting" means having sex with.
3. Students really don't get to pick what professors they have in college for their classes.
(She also put me wise to the Australia/NZ rivalry and jokes, but I really don't remember them. Well, except for the sheep jokes, but those are really baa-aa-aa-ad.)

I think that school thing really only happens in North America. I haven't heard of one country in Europe that has like big teams that are a school. They are mostly just formed from people getting together and forming a 'club'. That's basically how all football teams are over here. And the football teams have the professional team, then under teams for like kids and so on. Like there isn't only one Manchester United team for example, they have the reserves team and then youth teams.
Sadly, most schools in Britain these days dont receive enough funding to teach basic maths and English.... let alone fund a seriously competitive sporting team.

I was actually only referring to colleges, not K-12 schools. In that, sadly, the U.K. and the U.S. are essentially the same. There's so much that's not taught or done in schools that was taught or done not that long ago.
Part of the problem is the whole "teach to the test" phenomenon associated with the various state-level tests. Washington DC wants to have the states give that up in favor of pushing its own nationally standardized test. The problem there is twofold:
1. More and more power concentrated and centralized in one all-powerful authority;
2. Replacing one "teach to the test" environment with another one.
Anyhow, I don't intend to turn this into a political debate (which if we keep going down this road it surely will be), I'm simply curious about the differences.
Thanks again!

Learning Geography

I searched but didn't find any thread like this...
There are many people here who would travel to different cities, states, countries...
And not everyone knows about everything!
Yes, there's Google, you can search, check reviews...
But wouldn't it be better if we could have some 1st hand information here?
So that someone traveling somewhere new doesn't get harassed unnecessarily...
Also, we could have posts describing the specialties of your region/zone...
Anything social, political, cultural facts...
This could help a lot of people when need be...
If there's anything wrong in it, mods feel free to close the thread... but i just hope we could help each other with a lot many things this way...

The UK is the armpit of Europe. If you come here you will get ripped off by everybody, not just taxi drivers. The beaches don't have sand..or sun for that matter. We specialize in going out on weekends playing catch the STD and throwing up on pavements.
Most of the population think Eastenders is the height of cultural entertainment and our politicians take it in turns every few years to see how hard they can screw the working man over.
You'd be better off going on a camping tour of Pripyat than taking a holiday in the UK.

I'd talk about my City...
Kolkata (earlier Calcutta) is an old Indian Capital City ( Now the Capital Is New Delhi)...
When the British ruled India, calcutta was their capital... So there are some pretty old British monuments, architecture etc...
It is a lazy city... The average summer temperature has been on the rise, it goes to a max of about 45 degree Celsius...
A drop in temperature below 20 degrees is supposedly winter time here!
We have great rains in July-August that floods a few regions...
The population of the city including its suburbs is about 15million! Wherever you go, you'd see people people people!!
There are some nice places to visit, i'll try getting some pics sometime later...
People in general are nice, but you see, there are every kind of people everywhere...
Politically, the communist party was in power from the 70's till a year and a half back...
It's an old, lazy life-style city, will glimpses of sparks during the festive season!
Will post some pics of the festivity that went on last week... it's majestically beautiful
If anyone plans coming to Kolkata (Calcutta), do drop a message to me for sure!

Darjeeling, Sundarban are nearby places worth a trip!

That should keep Johnny Foreigner away Dirk, nicely done. Keep Britain and it's glorious sandy sunkissed beaches (such as West Wittering, and the boobie fest that is Bournemouth) free for us Brits. Could you imagine if they came over and discovered just how good value Southport Pier arcade is? It'd be shockingly over run within days! By jingo I won't hear of it!

Ah that takes me back!
After a day LARPing around in hundred acre woods near Boarhunt, we went to the Ship Inn for a drink, when one of the guys said "Don't look, but that guy at the bar used to be in the Monkees"
Of course we all turned around then realised we didn't have a clue what anyone in the Monkees looked like, so Davy Jones was safe.
Bergen, Norway. The wettest place in the universe. We like to spend our time in front of computers, and being social means to spend $300 on overpriced beer and pizza. At summer time, a million eggshell white norwegians like to migrate to the south of the equator with our best buds, the swedes, and getting drunk and smashing things (much like the brits). We repeat this twice a year; summer and winter.
We also love to whine about everything.
Welcome!

all politicians are such a breed!!
Montreal is Europe in North America. Living here sucks, because the premier of our province (equivalent to governor of a state), is practically openly racist toward the English. Other than the language feud, and the education riots, its a pretty nice place to visit
