Has anyone successfully completed Odin One-Click on a Mac using a VM? Odin can see the COM port just fine before I complete the battery/sim/downloader ritual. No problem getting into download mode - but I am unable to make the USB connection as before. I'm stumped.
Same boat (using Parallels).
I had to revert back to my 7yr old Sony Vaio to do it. Couldn't get Odin to recognize the device.
Try using virtualbox works great on linux hosts, should be fine on Mac as well.
I had to partition my hard drive and use boot camp to get ODIN to work on my mac. That's about the only way I got it to work. I tried Parallels and got the same as you couldn't get it working.
Odin won't work in a VM. I ran into this same problem flashing firmware on the Moment as well. I think it sucks that there isn't a Mac version.
has anyone gotten odin to work on a mac yet?
Yes! i got it to work tonight (on my i9000). I couldn't find anything confirming it working on either phone, so i thought i would just try it out myself.
Using Parallels 5 on OS X 10.5, just make sure you get the windows drivers for the phone, ODIN will recognize.
Sorry for rezzing this thread, but i wanted to let people know it will work through parallels.
lol might want to explain " drivers " to the mac guys
hahaha
Are you using parallels? I've had trouble with parallels and getting the usb connection through from the mac hardware into windows. I've found a way to get it to work:
1. Connect the phone while booted normally, USB debugging on.
2. Use the version of odin in the AIO captivate tool. Opening odin here will automatically put the phone into download mode. I suspect that this is the same as giving the phone an adb download command from command line in the PC, but I haven't bothered to install the android sdk in windows to find out.
3. For some reason, telling the phone to reboot to download mode from windows makes it stay connected. You can now use odin.
Downside to this method: it doesn't work if your phone can't boot.
I've actually had occasional luck getting it to connect while forcing the phone to boot straight into download mode with the buttons on the phone. This seems to be a bug in parallels and/or the usb drivers in mac os.
Tried heimdall?

Yep still sucks.
Bootcamp FTW!
Get it on Bootcamp.
Logically speaking, Vmware or Parallels runs on a main OS (OSX).
So an OS over an OS, the drivers won't recognize coz your main OS already did.
Just partition the HDD to a minimum (20gb) run that Bootcamp.
I got mine working btw.
(Win 7 Ultimate Bootcamp on Mac OSX Lion MacBook Pro late 2010.)
Peace out!
i just used odin on my mac (lion os x)using parallel with windows xp home edition. when you plug in the phone, even in download mode, it asks if you wanna connect it to your mac or the VM. the weird thing is, it didnt work on my old captivate, but it works on my refurbished one i got a few days ago. i think it might be because i was running cm7 on my old one, and samsung froyo on the new one. but yes, as m0ngstr0us said, boot camp is always another option.
Succesful Flash w/ Parallels and SGS3
I know this isn't in the correct forum (Using a Verizon SGS3), but I wanted to post confirmation that this does indeed work. Your mileage may vary, but if the SGS3 can work, I'm assuming this applies for older Samsung devices as well:
Successfully ODIN'ed a new recovery IMG on Windows 7 (in conjunction with Parallels 6 for Mac OS X 10.6.8)
Used a random Windows 7 iso I had lying around. This was a brand new Windows installation, and no out-of-the-box modifications were made to OS X, Windows, or Parallels (except for downloading/installing the Samsung USB drivers, as suggested in a previous post).
My SGS3 was actually soft-bricked (Could not boot into recovery OR download mode.. Holding the power button would greet me with a "Could not do normal mode. Booting into Odin Mode" error)
Turned phone on (auto-booted into ODIN mode), plugged it into the Mac via USB, and was greeted by a dialog noting that a USB device was detected. It asked if I wanted to access the USB device via Mac or Windows 7. Chose Windows 7, and Odin was able to connect to it flawlessly.
If there are any questions, please let me know. I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to find a solution (I'm on vacation in Germany and for some reason Windows PC's are avoided like the plague) and didn't want to go through the trouble of using Parallels unless it was confirmed working. For others in the same boat as me, let this be your confirmation. It works!!!

I did almost the same thing but using Windows XP via Parallels.
I had bricked my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 trying to install JellyWiz RLS12 without first unlocking the bootloader.
So I used the guide found at below link to walk me through using Odin for the first time. My timing was very good as official 4.1.1 leak had just surfaced and the guide included a link to it. I unbricked with that and my phone is running as smooth as ever (and i love JB!)
HOWEVER - USB not recognized on my Mac. Android File Transfer also does not recognize the phone. And FoxFi of course isn't working, hoping for a workaround :/
Also, my phone appears to be "stock" and is not rooted. Not sure how to root now but i'm sure there are a million similar threads i can search on.
GUIDE i followed to successfully unbrick!

EDIT: I got wifi tethering working on non-root JB for Verizon Gs3 by using pda + foxfi combo.
Worked!
I did it on Parallels 10.1.1!
Thanks everyone.
My steps:
Downloaded and installed Samsung USB Drivers for Windows on Windows 7 VM (google developer samsung usb driver)
Rebooted my VM
Turned off and disconnected my phone
Opened Odin
Turn on my phone on Downloading mode
Connected USB cable
Parallels asked if I want connect the device on Mac or VM, I choosed VM.
I waited the drivers are installed automatically.
I looked at Odin and the COM was appearing.
thanks so much
I accidently flashed SRE 1.3.1c over the captivate hybrid ROM and after gettin the error message every boot i deleted all user data it now only boots to a black screen and i cant get in to clock work recovery because i left the update.zip in the root of my internal sd card so it keeps flashing SRE when i hit reinstall packages is there anyway i can save my captivate
so know i am stuck because the only OS i can currently run is a ubuntu live cd
anyone know a way?
if the phone is still booting at all (passing AT&T screen) you should be able to use adb. you can force and adb reboot recovery or download and use adb push to move the clockwork update.zip back and restore your nandroid. or download to restore to a stock JF6
if you aren't booting at all though, then the only way to restore is to go back to a stock build using Odin. I know you say you only have an Ubuntu Live CD, but that just won't cut it. To use Odin, unfortunately, you need Windows (though it will work inside virtualbox).
its booting past the at&t screen but im having some trouble with adb

sounds like Odin will be your easiest method to fix this. boot into download mode using the 3 button method and find a windows based computer
im using regular installed ubuntu now (no more cd) ive got odin running in wine but its not being recognized in either download or recovery
Last time I was on the Linux scene, Wine had some major problems with USB. Windows is your best bet. (You can find a copy somewhere of xp for pretty cheap these days)
One thing I would suggest, based on my past experience with jailbreaking iPhone:
When trying to connect to any device in recovery/download/whatever-non-normal mode, try to connect to OS directly. Do not use tools like vmware. These sometimes have difficulty in recognizing devices in virtual machines/modes.
My iPhone wasn't recognized even in XP virtual machine on top of Windows 7. Maybe the same thing applies here too.
Edit:
Keep following the thread below. One more user is trying to achieve what u r trying to do.

Hello I'm new here but I'm almost completly hopeless on fixing my phone at this point. I was trying to install the latest version of cognition and now my phone is permanently stuck on the At&t boot screen. I eventually got to the point where I used adb to reboot recovery and tried to load one of my save clockwork recovery. I did this and waited at the at&t boot screen for a while, and still nothing happened. The kicker is now when I get my computer to recognize the phone it is only recognized as a mass storage device, and adb won't recognize any devices. I haven't had any luck with putting it in download mode and have tried every possible combination of button commands. Neither odin or adb recognize the phone. It just sits on the At&t flash screen, but my computer does recognize a connected phone. Plz help

tried that already. Can't get the phone into download mode in any way. The problem is windows keeps recognizing it as a mass storage device with the systems32\drivers\usbsstor.sys driver so nothing can recognize it as a samsung device cuz this driver takes priority. I saw that when it booted it wanted to use the std 3 drivers it usually uses but then usbsstor took prescendence. I'm going to try this in a linux enviorment to see if it ignores that windows system driver.
Switching to linux didn't help. I really need help here.
In case it still isn't working, I suggest trying this.

You need to either reinstall the drivers for the captivate, remove the drivers you have and install others or find a different windows machine.
Or you can use linux + vm ware or linux + virtual box, @dani897 has a thread posted in the dev forum on how to get this working.
Also I have read where some of the people who have downloaded the android sdk for linux had to change the permissions of adb to get it to work
#chmod -x [your path to sdk tools directory]/adb
Also, following this exactly helped me!

I looked through other similiar threads but they are for other phones so i wanted to start this thread to get unstuck with my samsung i897 with clockwork mod installed. I guess im good at learning things the hard way so here i am stuck at the mercy of you guys. this is what i figure i can do to get the update.zip i can put my sd card in a sd card reader then hook it up to my pc then manually copy update.zip to it to get access through the clockwork mod bios then point it to the freshly copied file but the prob is i dont have a usb sd card reader and i have ignorantly formatted everything on my phone so i can boot up only to the clockwork mod bios with nothing for it to work with so can any of you give me a laymens term step by step noobie style walkthru out of the kindness of your heart or pure boredom? thanks and i figue almost bricking my phone is a good way to learn this stuff So am i stuck having to get a sd card reader for my pc then download the update.zip or if there are alternatives to update.zip then id like to know but is this the only way to get me out of this situation of just having the clockwork bios and nothing else? if someone has a quickfix please let me know or point me to some solution please
Flash back to stock with ODIN that will fix your phone.... Why would u format?
Cuz i like to jump the gun before thinking alot of times thats why i learn the hard way most of the time it builds character also i learn stuff that i never wanted to learn but it helps me in the long run.
Carefull jumping the gun will land you with a hardbrick...
Ok I tried the [STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader and Drivers CAPTIVATE ONLY
thread located at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989 and i did it step by step with the mentioned drivers installed and i cant get oden to reconize my phone im in download mode followed the directions to a t with nothin :/ do you have any other ideas?
Is your phone running CyanogenMod or MIUI?
its running the \update-cm-7.1.0-Captivate-signed.zip or it says this when it boots into the custom bios clockwork mod recovery v2.5.1.0 speedmod ulfk and the bios text is in green with the reboot system now options - apply sdcard:update.zip and -wipe data/factory reset and - wipe cach partition and install zip from sdcard and - backup and restore and - mounsts and storage and advanced clockworkmod feautures and - advanced speedmod ulk features and- ********go back******* etc and their subdirectories but thats all i can get because i guess thats all left on my phone . i can get the com recognition when i boot up to recovery mode but not when i boot into download mode which is what i need to be in obviously because i cant get odin to run all the way through in recovery mode it sticks and freezes and this is what i get <ID:0/005> Added!!
<ID:0/005> Odin v.3 engine (ID:5)..
<ID:0/005> File analysis..
Then you need Nexus S drivers. I recommend you also download android SDK while your at it. FYI any AOSP (CyanogenMod, MIUI, etc) use Nexus S drivers.
Ok im trying to reinstall my driver for windows 7 nexus driver u mentioned btw my device is listed as gadget serial under devices and printers ok ive chosen 16_Shrewsbury and trying to update the gadget serial to the shrewsbury driver i keep getting select device - the folder you specified doesnt contain a compatible software driver for your device. if the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with windows for 32-bit systems and just to let you know the driver file name i downloaded is samsung_driver the one i was using before was SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86 so it seems i have a tricky aggravating device driver problem that is what makes all this hard in the first place trying to find needle in the haystack drivers when they should be outlined correctly instead of this. but anyway im hanging int their because i have a brick with nothing else so far. thanks agian for your patience in joining in my aggravatiion.
I really can't say. I just use SDK for that. =/ I've never installed any nexus S drivers, but I assume you can grab legit drivers from nexus site.
This is what im going to try now, im going to unistall and try to seek out all the drivers and do away with them i wish there was a samsung driver eliminator program so i can go through the trial and error correct driver thing which i shouldnt be going through because i had the correct drivers before enough to root my phone in the first place this is just crazy but i consistently run across these driver issues when dealing with windows so i should just accept this i how it is and keep plugging at it till i finally have a phone again well if anyone has a miracle answer for me then feel free to relieve my anxiety and bless me with just 1 time a simple fix lol. I guess if this was simple in the first place everyone would be doing it.
When i ran MIUI, the only time i had a driver problem was with adb. Rest if the t time, Samsung drivers worked fine. You could always use heimdall, on Ubuntu (google wubi installer)
im still stuck trying to get odin3 to reconize my device in download mode so i can one click fix my phone back to factory default , the trouble im facing is that i cant seem to get the correct driver ive tried so many different ones and im fighting windows 7 because it keeps putting i9000 or nexus drivers in automaticallly when i unplug the usb and reinsert in to initiate download mode. like i said in an earlier post i wish i had a proggie that could seek out the device drivers and annihilate them so i could start from scractch as yet im trying to find them myself manually and do away with them with not much luck.
Soft Brick Fix - Samsung Captivate
Another "Jump the gunner". That's me in a nutshell.
Here are the steps you will need to take in order to un-brick your phone.
(I have done this so many times, but I have never written a tutorial)
First off, it sounds like you have the wrong drivers installed for your phone. Most computers have more than one use port, and it will attempt to install the driver for the phone for every different port you plug it into. But lets fix the one that you have that's messed up already.
-With your phone in download mode, plug it into the USB port.
-Open control panel, system, then click on device manager in the left column of the window.
-At the bottom of the list you will see "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"
-Expand this list.
-Find the device that is supposed to be resembling your phone. If you don't know the name, you may be able to check by the windows clock for the green circle with the check mark in it, clicking this will tell you what "Ejectable" USB devices are connected.
-Right click the matching device name in the Device manager screen and then click uninstall.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Download the correct drivers:
Samsung USB Drivers
(go here, click software, USB driver should be first listing)
-Install the driver from where you downloaded it to.
-Plug in your phone while in download mode.
-Verify that the correct driver has been installed.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Open your phone and remove the battery.
-Replace the battery and battery cover.
-Open any Odin one click from this thread (Recommend one with Gingerbread bootloaders)...
Odin One Clicks
-Boot phone into download mode
-Plug phone into USB (After Odin is open)
-When you see the yellow COM port lit up, flash.
That should do it!
followed your advice and im still stuck with every device driver i try it either says will not reconzie my device or that device cannot start etc. i refuse to give up so if you guys are on this journey with me thats kewl. ok instead of manually trying to install the driver i goto setup now and when i run it i get this message
Install driver - SAMSUNG Android USB Modem Software was not installed successfully (16) There is a driver installed for the device, please uninstall first.
So now im in device manager trying to find the correct driver to uninstall since its not listed under usb devices it only comes up as gadget serial under other devices. Im trying to get rid of the drivers but i seem to be stuck in a loop . i found this link http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/window-on-windows/get-rid-of-old-device-drivers-hidden-in-vista/867 so im trying the advice here and seeing if i can remove the device and add the right one man i should just reformat my hd and put in linux or unix or any os besides windows then id probably be ok.
You don't have to reformat to do Linux. It will run via a live usb drive or a side-by-side installation.
ok i used the advice from http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/window-on-windows/get-rid-of-old-device-drivers-hidden-in-vista/867 and showed hidden devices and removed all samsung drivers or anything remotely resembling samsung usb drivers including the gadget serial device and then reinstalled the supposedly correct drivers for my i897 atnt captivate or craptivate and it installed but gives me this error gadget serial control failed so now i suppose i have to find a driver that doesnt exist for a device that isnt correctly being identified by win 7 as a samsung galaxy s sgh-i897 antnt captivate. or does anyone know of a gadget serial control driver that will work so that odin3 will reconize my device so i can get some semblance of a cellphone back? no im trying the advice from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1355666 with the title [SOLVED] Gadget Serial Issue - No Flash my problem is i have the same prob but require a flash.
Have you given heimdall a try? It uses different drivers than Odin.
I didnt have to use heimdal odin3 finally reconized my phone after following my previous post option and installing previous set of drivers for my phone not the newest seems u can save a brick after all but pain in the rear but now ive learned so im
ready to hack my phone to death lol btw if anyone else has this prob feel free to ask me fer help lol and thank you very much for all the help in this wonderful forum top notch support guys with this kind of diligence there is nothing u guys cant do )
Good Luck
Hi
I want to update my sp to the latest firmware and i cannot get my phone to boot into flash mode for love nor money using windows 8
I have tried everything possible to get this stupid phone to update the firmware and had enough to but honest.
Tired disabling driver signing and it installs the phone as a mass storage device. tried using flash tool looked at every forum i can regards this problem if i had a pc with XP i bet it would work.
I need to get my phone into flash mode before it goes out the window with a stick of dynamite tied to it and go back to an S2.
anyone got any ideas.
