So I have a captivate From rogers that I got new from someone on craigslist about 4 or 5 days ago. I went to restart this morning and it wouldn't turn back on. It shows the i896 white samsung boot screen, then after that it goes black, you can here the samsung boot screen sound. I have used z4root and used voodoo lagfix and it was running 2.1 for rogers stock. I have tried calling my number from another phone and it goes straight to voicemall, and the buttons come on but don't vibrate when i touch them like i normally would.
*Update* i can go into the boot options screen and tried to clear the cache data and reboot and that didn't work

Does it get into download mode? U could try restoring to stock to see if that works.

My phone was working fine then i pulled it out of my pocket and the buttons were lit but screen would not turn on. I pulled out the battery to restart the phone but when i tried to restart it will only gets to the first boot screen then it shuts off. I cant get into recovery mode but can get in to download mode. So i used odin and tried to reflash the rom but it still does the same thing. Also when i plug in the phone in the battery symbol keeps loading then shuting down then loading over and over. Anyone else come across this?

Sounds like the same problem I had. It was a dead internal SD card. And from the pile of threads already on here relating to the issue, unfortunately there is no fix other than sending it back to Bell for repairs/replacement.
Thats to bad thanks for the info
I have a bell Vibrant. I was running on Darky's FW. But this happens on any firmware and even on recovery menu. As the phone is booting the touch buttons are illuminated, if I press one (menu or back) that light goes out and stays out and I can't press it anymore. (This also happens in CWM) When phone boots up both back lights are on and go off with the screen as they should. When I unlock to phone both lights come on and go out as they should. But if I press the menu button on the home screen, it opens the menu section and the light goes out upon button press but it sticks or something and keeps pressing the menu button on its own. I can leave my phone sitting on the home screen and the menu comes up and goes away in a continuous loop until I lock the phone. The same thing happens if I unlock the phone but press the back button. the light goes out after I press it and it stays out until I lock the phone again. So my phone can sit at the home screen but only one touch button is lit up? I'm sorry for the book I just wrote but I'm frustrated and can't figure out what to do. If someone has any ideas apart from sending it to Bell for repairs please help.
Thanks
Did you try flashing it back to stock JH2 or JL2 ?
does it work on stock ROMS ?
Yes I was on Darky's ROM, and when I got home I flashed back to JH2 like I have done in the past and it didn't fix anything. But I think the problem goes deeper than the ROM because even in Clockwork mod or during boot if I press one of the buttons the light goes out and stays out. I tried flashing back to JH2 and JK3 with odin. And Kies tells me I can upgrade current version even tho I flashed JH2 & JK3 from samsung-firmwares.
my suggetion, send the phone back for repair/exchange
and flash it back to stock ROM before you do
sounds like a HARDWARE defect
Weirdest thing. I left the phone off in my car when I went to work today and when I turned it back on it didn't do it anymore. But a couple of days ago this happened and fixed itself too and then happened again the next day.
Mine has done this intermittently since I upgraded to JL2 at the beginning of December. Doesn't matter what rom is running, it's still the same, even sometimes does it at the cwm recovery screen. It's annoying. :\
Mine does it too

there is a fix for this. I have the same problem, but I am running a custom rom and not sure if it can be flashed without going back to stock. Try this...

My I9000m stock with JL2 used to do that too. I installed speedmod k13c kernel and then darkys 9.3. That problem totally never appeared again.

Good morning!
I just saw the official 2.2 and decided to give it a whirl before heading out this morning. Sadly the update all seemed to go well until the phone restarted. The ATT splash screen comes up and so does the Galaxy S logo. The S logo stays up for a while then the screen goes black. The home/back/etc...buttons remain illuminated on the phone and I have let it sit there for ten minutes and nothing changes. I have pulled the battery and restarted once again and it just hangs at the Galaxy S screen until going blank with the buttons functioning. Any help would be much appreciated
if you are running stock firmware, un-modded, call ATT and complain.
were you using launcherpro? or any other homesceen replacement before the upgrade?
I was rooted and running the lagfix along with ADW. But the update seemed to take until the restart. When I click on the "home" button or anything like that, the buttons will illuminate and stay illuminated and there is no vibration feedback.
Hi Folks,
I have been using an unlocked Captivate for 3 months. I recently flashed MIUI ROM - 1.7.8 (from Cognition) and it was working fine for a day. Suddenly, when I had put the phone on charge (power not USB), the screen turned black and the phone is not working after that.
I flashed to stock (ODIN: as mentioned here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=776255) but after that the AT&T logo comes up (with the screen display very dull) and I hear the Samsung startup sound (no screen). That is all. It goes to black screen with the buttons highlighted.
If I connect it to my PC, I can browse the SD card but the screen doesn't turn on at all. I tried re-flashing to stock multiple times with no luck. Please help!

So your saying your phone actually fully boots, you just can't see it? (I would test this by calling myself) This is a problem I've never heard of.... Can you boot into recovery with a working screen? Could be a hardware problem, considering how it happened.
Hi,
I was able to call my number earlier (before flashing back to stock) but not anymore (get a busy line after the first ring). However, I get the AT&T screen (only time I see something on my screen) and the Samsung startup tone and the buttons are all highlighted. The screen is black.
Even when I did Odin, I was doing it from a black screen (the Download icon on the screen didn't show up). I never get to see anything on the screen other than the at&t logo (so not able to boot into recovery actually!).
I just hope it is not a h/w pbm. I would rather try fixing it myself (if it s/w pbm) than taking it to the store

What kind of charger were you using? Honestly, it sounds like you fried some of those beautiful innards I'm no expert, though.

It could possibly be because of the power issue (my charger model is ETA0U60JBE which supports 100-240v and I have 240v at my place so it should not ideally be a pbm). I'm just trying to see if there is some s/w fix for this situation before giving it for a h/w check.
Would this be a problem with my LED screen (though I see the at&t logo come up)? If it is, would it be some connection issue to the LED screen or a completely dead LED?
Trying to get this working for a friend
It is just a stock att vivid, never rooted or installed any custom roms or anything
A while ago out of nowhere it just started doing this.
Any attempt to turn it on you see the screen light up but it is just black and never boots.
I have tried getting into recovery to reset (volume down + power?) and it never does anything but stay in this black state
is this fixable?
