Setup: HTC Hero running CM6 (Vanilla 31 Dec) with Steel Elegance 6.1 (ported via Theme Porter).
Problem: I've been working on one of the Windows 7 look-alike setups using Desktop Visualizer. Everything was going good initially. Then, I went into the /system/apps via ADB and started removing 'useless' apps (guided by the list on the CM forums). Everything still seemed kosher, but on reboot, all my widgets were cleared from my desktop. Now here's the thing: I can add DVR widgets and load icons, JPGs, etc, but when I try to add one using a PNG, I get an error that it "Can't create shortcut or widget."
I've since reformatted and reflashed, but the problem has yet to be resolved.
I've tried the reformat/reflash, using ADW instead of GO, changed the options in the PNG files... nothing seems to work.
Any suggestions would be -greatly- appreciated, as this is driving me nuts.
Also, Google and forum search has not yet led me to anything related.
EDIT: It seems that the problem may be related to using ES File Explorer to select the files? I tried using the IO Explorer on a whim, and it worked... Any codeheads out there able to clarify this for me?

Hello,
yesterday I started to move some Apps (around 20) to my SD Card.
On of the apps was "HTC_IME mod" (the keyboard). When I tried to write something now I only had the android keyboard. HTC IME wasn't even in the input settings.
Well, okay, moved it back to phone storage. Still didn't work somehow.. it FC'd.
I reinstalled it and it worked again.
Some minutes later I've seen that 3 Apps aren't in the AppDrawer anymore!
Since I got some of them in a folder on the homescreen I tried to start the apps there. It didn't work! Getting the message "isnt installed on phone" or something like that.
+ All of the apps I moved were shown without the actual app icon but with the default green icon. I tried to start them too and it worked..
I also couldn't move any of them back to the phone storage because the buttons were greyed out and I were only able to uninstall them.
I removed most of the apps without a real icon from the folder and put them back in (Holding them in the AppDrawer and moving into the folder) and did another restart to see if they're without an Icon again or not.
Now the Launcher Force Closed. Couldn't do anything.. (I'm on CM6 and deleted the ADW Launcher and just installed LauncherPro Plus)
Blah blah I connected to USB to get the USB screen (makes the launcher not close anymore) and used the powerstrip app to go the root explorer and reinstall the Launcher. Worked again.
I checked my folder again and I see that all icons are still shown! Yay!
But wait, that can't be true. I did another restart.
Checked the folder and most of the apps are without an icon again (default icon only).
AND I have some apps TWICE in the AppDrawer!!
wtf!? What the hell am I doing wrong?
I just wanted to use the FroYo Apps2SD methode to get some free space on my phone -.-

Another restart fixed it. But it didn't fix the missing icons in the folder and I think it also didn't fix everything what happened before.
+1
Same problem... But i think it may be related to Market Update.
Common problem... have a read of the following:
http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/install-location.html
http://www.androidguys.com/2010/05/22/storing-apps-sd-froyo/
Also, most reliable results are with stock Froyo Launcher... probably best to use that if you have a lot of apps on SD using Froyo method.
Shameless plug: Kang-o-rama 1.0, which is based on CM6 RC1, is the only CM rom with full apps2ext support. Apps2ext will give you the benefits and none of the pain... see my sig.
Temporary solution
Temporary solution that worked on my N1 is this:

Here some solutions that I and others have posted in the nightly build thread. Go into settings, applications, manage applications, running, adw, then force stop. That brought back the apps icons. The weirdest one I found is to open camera (I then open settings) close camera, and my icons are back. Don't ask me why this works but it does.
Note: All the icons that turn generic are in folders on my home page, including camera.

Oh wth.
I know that the icons were still not shown yesterday morning and during the day I used the camera exactly once.
I just checked the folder on the homescreen and the icons are there .. crazy
Bump!
anyone with the same problems but other solutions?
This is a common and known issue with custom launchers (like LauncherPro you're running) and Froyo's Apps2SD. Plus, it's a known limitation - widgets/keyboards/system service apps/etc can't be moved to SD and keep working reliably. Cyanogen enables the option, but it doesn't say you can use it on everything.
There are no solutions, and it's very well possible that there won't ever be any.
Hope someone can help me get a transparent news widget on my rooted Captivate. I have no other themes installed, but would love a this mod for the background I use.
I looked everywhere and tried mostly all of the transparent genie widget .apk and .zip files, but they just won't install. Not sure if I am doing something wrong, or if there are any other ways of doing the deed.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, and my apologizes if this has already been asked.
the one i have works on my phone. try it.
Just tried and its a no go. It will act like it is installing and than says app not installed (via apkinstaller).
I get an unable to parse error

i'm having the same issue as well. tried installing it a few times, even rebooting and nothing...
No problems here, it installed just fine.
I'm on JH3/SRE_1.2.1a.
Thanks for the app!
Did you guys uninstall the old non-transparent genie widget first? That let me install this fine
EDIt: changed "install" to "uninstall".
i did. SWM said i already had it installed, same with the transparent one too
Sorry I meant uninstall the old one first. that made it work for me.
I uninstalled it and transparent still wouldn't load. Now I've lost app. Not good.
i can't even find it when trying to uninstall! and when i re-install, it says its already installed..
Thank you so much! I uninstalled genie first and then installed this one and worked great.
Ok guys this is how you do it. First uninstall the old genie widget if you have it, its in applications named "news and weather" not genie widget. After you uninstall the old one reboot the phone before attempting to install the new one. Install transparent after the reboot.
I used sideload wonder machine to install file from my pc but any method should work as long as you reboot after uninstalling the original.
WOWWWWWWWWW....i felt like the biggest newb after reading that.
NEWS AND WEATHER WIDGET!! lol!!
ok...so i had it all along...and the transparent one too.
le sigh...
thanks
I can't see the stock News and Weather app to remove it on my device.
Any thoughts?

I'm not sure I can help much as I just poked around until it worked.
I found news and weather with titanium backup and tried yo uninstall it there. I'm not site that did it but I saw the name of the app was com.google.genie.genie or something.
I think I then found that in the regular place...homescreen/menu button/applications /manage apps
I didn't necessary catch everything I did so I hope it might still help.
Thanks Dave. I'll fiddle with it a bit more.

Even after I delete it, when I try to load transparent one it still says it will replace it. I have searched all over for any other file I would need to delete, with no luck.
So now what do we do?
Is there a suitable icon changer out that works with the Galaxy S phones yet?
I've tried bettercut 3.0 and anyshortcut 0.3 but neither work yet.
Any suggestions?
I've tried to adb pull the apk for an app, redo the icon, save and push it back, but it uninstalls the app and won't reinstall (assuming this is a signing error).

When you first launch the app? Or when you do something else?
Try to reboot?
Try to uninstall/reinstall?

launcherpro gives you the ability to do it natively in the homescreen if you dont mind loosing touchwiz
or there is an app called folderorganizer which worked well for me in the past
I figured it out. Using the app itself didn't work, but if you long press on the home screen and add new shortcut, select bettercut, it works.

i use desktop visuliser to customise icons. it works nicely on the home screen, plus you can choose which size you'd like them to be.

Try NinjaMorph. You can use that to change all the icon's for the apps that are installed on the phone to the /system/app directory. It's pretty easy to change all those icons using that app.
But for any user installed apps that end up installed to /data/app you'll have to do a little more work.. (that is if you want the icons to be changed in the app drawer as well, if you don't then you can just use one of those other apps people have already mentioned)
Basically you'll have to copy the .apk to your computer. Edit the apk with the new icon you want, delete the current signature, resign it, copy it back to your sdcard, uninstall the app, then re-install it with your newly edited akp. Sounds like a lot but it's not to bad if you use the right tools.
7zip works great to open the akps and edit the files inside them. I also found a nice little tool someone had created that lets you just drag and drop apks into it and press a button to resign the package. I'm not at my home computer so I don't remember the name off hand but you should be able to find it from a simple google search.
Hope that helps.
I have a NookColor 1.0.1 fully re-rooted with Market, Calendar, Calculator, etc. available as specified with the AutoNooter. My only problem is that when I try to change wallpapers I don't see any options for LiveWallpapers - just the Wallpaper and Photo Gallery option that were always there. I've done a manual reinstall of the live wallpaper apk noted in nookdev but with no change in what happens. I've restarted the NC several times with no changes in this. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Hi.. try following this GUIDE.. please make sure you are doing all the steps.. take your time as this involves moving a few "so" files.
Actually if u use Auto-Nooter, you dont need to do this...
Well, I also did everything in the GUIDE for this - reinstalled the .apk and two .so files in the appropriate directories - rebooted. When I touch the home screen and choose the choose/change wallpaper option, I only see Wallpapers and Photo Gallery - nothing about Live Wallpapers.
I've got the same problem.

Beats me.. i re-rooted my NC and i get LWP...
If you have root explorer, run it and go to /data/app
scroll down to LiveWallpapers.apk and touch & hold.
in the pop-up select permissions.
it should read
Read Write Execute
User X X
Group X
Others X
if you have these you shouldn't be seeing any problems.
Sounds like your using the built in book wallpaper interface. You'll. Have to use the wallpaper picked for whatever alternate launcher you're using. Usually this can be accomplished by a long press on the home screen selecting wallpapers and then selecting live wallpapers.

Problem Resolved!
Dawynkoop hit the nail on the head! I was working within B&N's launcher. I installed ADW.Launcher and, within that, had no problem selecting LiveWallpapers that I had downloaded. Thanks everybody for your thoughts on this!
I installed Launcherpro Icons and Docks from the market place and I saved a few icons to my gallery. However, it saves 2 .png icons and I can only delete one of them. The other one I can't seem to delete as the "delete" button is greyed out and the Location is unavailable. Can anyone help me delete these icons? I tried searching for them through my computer and Astro with no results.
It could be that your gallery hasn't updated its cache. It may think the image is still there even though it is not.
All the icons will be saved to /sdcard/LauncherProIcons. If the file isn't there, then it doesn't exist.
You can install a free app called Rescan Media that will help your gallery update the cache.
You could also try restarting the phone. Your cache should be updated on boot.
Thanks. I had to reset the phone to get rid of it. But since after the reset, I have not been able to push apps from the online Market site to my phone.
