[Q] help : Power button fixed, need to root..

Hi guys,
The power button on my nexus one died, and I tried to get the phone replaced by htc singapore.. but all efforts were futile. So they replaced the "Rigid FLex" jacket for free and gave me back the phone..
I dont really have any complaints, other than the power button still feels flimsy and I dont trust it, since it causes a lot of inconvenience.
NOW, can I use the volume key or trackball to wake the phone up ?
Would any of these buttons Die like the power button (are they equally flimsy ? )
Ive been reading on custom-roms which will add trackball-wake-up option..
-Could you point me to the most stable rom? (Im running froyo frf91)
-If rooting is required, could you point me to a newbies guide to rooting..

cyanogen rom can do trackball wake up...trackball unlock...and pressing menu will lock your phone..
i suggest you to download rom manager from market...
and dont forget to learn about how to unlock and rooting your phone..
or you also can root your phone without unlock your phone...
use search function..you can find a lot resource to root your phone

I did use the search button, but it gave me tonns of threads, with a 100 pages in each..
So I had to start this thread.
My phone is unlocked.. (sim-free)..

There is no SIM-locked Nexus in existence, as mentioned multiple times. "Unlocked" stands for "Unlocked bootloader", doesn't have anything to do with SIM. Yours is locked, since you just got it and never unlocked it.
I suggest you read the Wiki instead of continuing this thread, read all the guides, use 1-click root application and DO NOT use ROM Manager. Learn to install the custom recovery yourself, and to install ROMs using the recovery. Everything is written in the Wiki.
The most stable yet heavily customized Froyo ROM would probably be Enomther's, which I personally use.

Hi, i was reading and stumbled on Softroot.
I cannot find more info on it..
Its apparently, temporary rooting.. like jailbreaking..
Can I do a softroot to achieve the track-ball wakeup ?

Use Universal Androot.
There is no "temporary rooting", and rooting isn't equal to jailbreaking, it's a different thing, done for different purposes. Rooting is permanent, otherwise it's worthless. Having 1 session of root access (until reboot) doesn't accomplish anything, unless all you want to do is delete some system application or something of the sort.

Hi, I used the 1Click Androot app to Root my device. Im backing up apps and settings using titanium backup.
My next step is to flash the custom rom.
Im deciding between Enomthers 2.11.3 NOT Pre_Themed ROM, and Nightly's CM6 for Nexus one..
So to clarify things, I need to
1 rename the Custom rom to Update.zip and paste it to the Root of SD card.
2 Rename the Amon recovery image to recomevry.img and paste to root of SD.
3 Turn on the phone while holding Volume Down
4 Select "BOOTLOADER" from the menu
5 Select "RECOVERY" from the menu
6 Select "Flash update.zip" or "Flash ZIP file"
7 Turn off verification, if such option is presented
8 Select your downloaded ROM image
9 Wait for the flash to finish successfully, if it didn't - do not continue!
10 Return to main recovery menu
11 Select "Wipe"
12 Select "Wipe data / factory reset"
13 Select "Wipe Dalvik cache"
14 Return to main recovery menu
--> Reboot the phone

You got some things confused.
1. No need to rename it. Using custom recovery lets you flash anything with any name.
2. Since you rooted using 1-click root, you don't have a recovery yet. You need to flash it before you reboot to it. Read and execute: Nexus One Wiki / Recovery Images / Amon_Ra's Recovery / using flash_image method. Link for your convenience. You could also go to Developer section and download the latest 1.8.0.1 Amon_Ra's recovery instead of 1.7.0.1 in the Wiki. I'll update the Wiki to give a choice between the two.
3. Continue your list till the end.
Nothing needed for the radio, if you're already on 4.06.
Spare Parts will appear only after flashing the ROM.
Pre-Themed black text is regular, white text is for black notification bar - just as you wrote.
Personally, I run Enomther's since Froyo is out. Before that I was using CM. You might try them both and see which you like more.

Presently, Im stuck at the ADB step..
I got the android sdk package, got nexus one drivers.. but for whatever reason, it wont show my device in cmd prompt..
I have pretty much memorised the adb for beginers guide.. but no luck..

This is turning out to be a pain in the rear end..

You don't need ADB to flash recovery.
Follow the guide I've pointed you to.
Return to ADB once you're already on the custom ROM, it won't run away.

Flashing the recovery image was quite a task!
Luckily I googled and stumbled on a thread where YOU mentioned to download and install BusyBox.
So yes, Ive flashed it finally..
Im downloading the Enomthers ROM now.. slow net connection.. will load it in a while if it allows.

Done installing custom rom.. it was pretty staright forward once recovery img was flashed.
I would like to add some info, for someone who stumbles on this.
In recovery options,
For backup/Restore.. when you select Nand+Ext, and end up getting 'Error...Run nandroid-mobile.sh', press back to goto the main menu, toggle USB MS (mass storage) on, plug it to the computer, delete the nandroid folder, and try again.
If you still get the error, delete nandroid folder, and this time select 'Nand backup only'. if succesful, proceed to copy the nandroid folder to your computer.
So far Ive installed themed enothmer rom.. and its decent.
Will customize it tomo..
For the time-being, ive noticed one issue/bug .. the LED light blink interval is too quick even on selecting 'Slow'.

Now that Ive successfully flashed a custom rom, and its working fine..
I noticed an update to enomthers rom. (v2.12.2)
I want to flash this rom, so do I have to re-flash recovery? and then flash this new rom?
Or just flash the new rom? but then do I wipe/factory reset and wipe Dalvik cache of the device?
Actually restoring the data (especially mesages and apps) is quite an issue, it takes a while (considering im on EDGE)..
also, is it recommended to make an apps2sd partition on SD card? I did get low memory warning on internal memory.
and last, I just want the black status bar and 'some' custom icons (not all), so is there a way to install these on otherwise stock looking enomther rom?
I know they are some noobish questions but I need answers..

You don't touch the recovery once it's flashed, as long as it's working. You just flash the ROM using the recovery that you already installed. And don't do any wipes - so you won't have to restore the data.
Apps2EXT (EXT2 partition for apps on SD card) is great and highly recommended.
You can apply themes, simple as complex, using morphs.

Need your opinions again.
I was extremely satisfied with Enomthers 2.14.4 rom, till the update notifiation appeared.
Ive waited long enough for an update from Enom, but he has his reasons, and I dont see an update in the pipeline.
So I need to get a new rom & it should have have trackball wake up/vol keys wakeup (cant afford to break the power key).
Also Gingerbread, and Apps2SD (+).
Now Ive come across two roms,
a) Nightly's CM rom
b) GRI40, system dump + unmodified stock n rooted rom.
So which one should I get?
Also whats the difference between nightlys CM rom and CM rom ?
Also, I see I need to update the radio, so this has to be done before flashing rom or after?
I have flashed AMON RA's recovery 2.0, do I need to flash anything else?

Stock GRI40 doesn't have any mod for trackball/volume wake. So for now you're out of options - you have to use a custom compiled AOSP Gingerbread, which point you towards CM7/SuperGinger/Leo's Ginger/etc. Currently none of those are as stable as Enom's (I've tried 2 of them).
I can also suggest flashing FOTAKill (use Google to find, learn and download) and keeping with Enom's. That's what I'm doing now. And after a brief experience with MyTouch 4G, I'm seriously considering flashing Froyo Desire port.

the Gingerbread update is glued to the taskbar, and doesnt pop-up at all (doesnt intervene/hinder ) in regular operations.

[Q] Captivate market deleted, what do?

Hello, guys. This is my first post after lurking for a while, adding roms and getting all of the good stuff for my captivate. But i bumped across the new market. I didn't follow instructions completely and deleted the market. So how should I fix this? I don't want to reflash my phone, because this would take 6 days and I am going on vacation in a few days, and I don't think I will survive without my beloved phone.
Any help on how to download the market app would be much appreciated. I have the android market app v2.12 but it will not let me install through my computer...

Still have the *.apk for the new market? If not you can go to the Themes Forum and do a search there - someone had the *.apk file for the new market app. You can download it - put it on your SDCard and then run it through your file manager - should install and your back in business.
Will need to use the SEARCH feature to find it though as I don't have the link.

Allright, thanks. I hope this works because normally I could not install apps directly to my phone because of at&t but i will try this.

btw.. are you on a stock ROM (2.1) or have you flashed to a custom ROM? Also if your phone isn't rooted this method won't allow you to install the app.

And uh.. it never takes me 6 days to flash - usually takes me about 15-20 minutes to flash back to stock, install the new ROM, and restore my applications/app data.

It WAS on android 2.2 but I'm not sure if it is anymore because i tried restoring it to factory settings. And I'm talking about sending it to samsung to reflash it, I don't know how to do it myself :/

Oh, and yes. It is rooted.
and the app from there is kind of messed up... Very glitchy (crashes a lot and lags like crazy) and doesn't show every app in searches, like z4root which is how i easily rooted my phone the first time.
So i really just want the old market back but it will just not let me.

Go into Menu -> Settings -> About Phone and look to where it says "Firmware Version". If it says 2.2 and your phone has been rooted it should work fine.
Otherwise... you would at least need to Root it if on 2.2.
And if your not on 2.2? I'm not sure if this will work as I know it was pulled from a 2.2 updated phone.

Ok.. Plan B
You should be able to find the old Market app inside the *.zip file of any ROM you have downloaded. Just make sure they are 2.2 Froyo ROMs
Open up the *.zip file and go into system/app and look for (I'm 99% sure) "MarketUpdater.apk"
Copy that file to your SDCard and install using your file manager - should overwrite everything and hopefully your good.
Also.. you could go to your Menu --> Settings --> Applications and probably uninstall the current Market app you have downloaded first - delete any cache/data under there first before uninstalling.
Hopefully that will throw back on the original market app and your all set.

The only problem with that is... It was this one click downloader thing... Odin3. So I don't know... It also won't let me reupdate it for some reason....

Hrm.. This is from the OTA JH7 zip I have lying around. Give this a try and see if it works.
If not you will need to re-flash back to stock.

Then a few options you have is Cognition, Auxura, or Assonance.
I've ran all of them and they are all great ROM's. I currently am running Assonance with the Gingerbread theme and it runs great.
Just make sure to do the reading first then download the ROM and you should be on your way.... just remember failure to follow the directions if on you and your warranty is already toast

Actually. Something that would REALLY help would be helping me get into download mode. Every time i plug my phone into the computer in download mode it says usb device not recognized. How do i fix this? I've tried about every samsung drivers... None of them work... If i could get it into download mode i could get it working easily

The Ultimate Noob Guide-Need Help Please

I recently bought a Nook Color and i want to root it. I am hearing things about Autonooter and putting an image on my micro SD card. Personally i just want the best option to root my Nook, i want to overclock it aswell .
Really sorry if someone has already posted a thread like this, i tried searching for one.
I havent opened my Nook Color yet so guessing the software would be 1.0.0 so how would i root it to 1.1.1 and also stop OTA and install a overclocking software.

I'm pretty new to this- I have my NK running 1.0.1 using autonooter and want to update to 1.1. I think I've got a grip on using ClockworkMod, but in the instructions for downloading the 1.1 kernel, it says to "check the MD5 hash"- how do I get this info from the downloaded ZIP file? I don't want to even try and do the update without making sure the download is not corrupt.

I have to say though, to the OP, that reading through all the guides (and some comments) in the dev forums would be the best because you'll learn all the ins n outs. Having a noob guide is fine but it's fun searching for the info yourself and you'll learn/remember a lot more about your device. having a noob guide that is not comprehensive enough just promotes needless questions when the info is all over the place elsewhere.

Patrikc8- from my experience (have ROM Manager & Clockworkmod installed in prep for 1.1 update), Clockwork mod is used for making system backups and doing system restores (including installs of custom ROM's)
As far as the SD vs autonooter- installing to the SD means that you typically don't touch the original system files on the Nook itself- good for trying out a ROM that you are interested in but not sure you want to keep. There may be a performance hit though because you're constantly reading from the potentially slower SD media (correct me if I'm wrong on that anybody). I used autonooter to root my Nook and it has worked great since- it is apparently a very easy way to root and I had no trouble doing it.

For what it's worth- did a little investigating & you can use Astro file manager to get the MD5sum- just do a long touch to the file in question and choose "Details".

SHould i use auto nooter 1.0.1 or the nook color v1.1.1 ROM?
and im guessing you have to root it first then install a rom then install a kernal?
would there be a big difference in 1.1.1 and 1.0.1 ?

I bought my Nook Color a couple of weeks ago. It was on 1.0.0. The first thing I did was update to 1.0.1. I then downloaded the Autonooter for 1.0.1 on my pc. I also installed Win32DiskImage.exe on my pc, and followed the directions to burn the image to my sd card. I followed the instructions exactly as they are laid out on nookdevs. I then reformatted my sd card back to normal to use for storage in my device.
One thing that happens when you run autonooter is that clockwork recovery is installed. This is simply a tool that will allow you to perform functions at a lower level than the android interface will allow. It my look a little intimidating at first, but go slow, and make sure you are absolutely sure that anything you do in CWR matches what it is listed in the instructions posted. Every action requires a confirmation, so, again, go slow and think it through.
A few days later, the 1.1.1 update came out. I used the updated Rom and instructions here:

Something that I found confusing is using alternate home screens. I finally determined that Zeam was the right choice for me. It is free in the market. The other tool you should download from the market is called Home Switcher. It will let you switch between different launchers (e.g. Zeam, BN stock home, etc.). Again, you will probably have to experiment a bit to get things working the way you like.
Lastly, to improve the performance overall, I flashed a few different kernels. You may want to play with your nook for a while to get comfortable first. When you choose to flash a kernel, you will boot into recovery (this brings up the Clockwork Recovery program), and pick the zip file that you download to your sd card. My recommendation is to start with the 900mHz kernel first. Make sure your nc is stable, then try some of the faster ones.
As far as MD5s, I have not ever checked after downloading, and have not had any problems as a result. It is something I need to investigate further and start doing.
Hope this helps. I do agree with superkevx above. Browse and search and experiment. It is very unlikely that you will do any permanent damage to your nook, although it is possible. Everyone needs to have at least one bricked device along the way. I have learned more by rendering my devices inoperable and then figuring out how to get them back again. You know you're doing it right if your palms are a little sweaty as you wait for your device to reboot.

Where I'm running into trouble is that, because this is all so new to me, I'm lost when reading a lot of these forums, because I have no idea what all these terms mean or what things are.
Here's where I'm at with my Nook Color. Got it a week ago, rooted it with AutoNooter 3.0, got ADB working (finally) over USB. YouTube works. Can get my email. Using Launcher Pro and Dolphin HD. That's about it.
I'm unclear about a few things, and I realize they're pretty basic. But I've searched and searched and can't find clear answers. Hopefully, someone here can help me:
1. How do I know what version of Android I've got on this thing. Nowhere can I find a place to see the version number. And the AutoNooter 3.0 page didn't tell me what version it installs. 2.2?
2. Does Flash work on this or not? This is related to question 1, because I need to at least know what Android version I'm using before I can even beging to search to figure out whether Flash works with it.
3. What is CM7?
4. I tried installing Flash101.apk with ADB, but get the message: INSTALL_FAILED_OLDER_SDK. Again, I'd like to know what this means, but what I've read says the Flash version is for an newer Android version. So, we're back to... what version of Android is on this thing?

2) No, you need 2.2. There are several options, including simply running it from an SD card or flashing it to memory (eMMC)

1. This = The version currently running on it.
2. This = Version 2.2

I can't be certian since I have moved to a CM7 variant, but I think it might be under settings either about or device information.

If you rooted with Autonooter you are on Android 2.1 Eclair. If you are running a froyo rom you are on Android 2.2. If on a CM7 based Rom you are on gingerbread android 2.3

CM7 (Cyanogenmod 7) is a custom rom, which is a custom operating system that replaces your current one. If you are not familiar with Android yet or rooting, I would stick with autnooter for now. Phiremod beta 2 is a stable custom rom with flash, but you need clockwork recovery first to install it.

Most custom rom installs (phiremod) would erase what you have now completely. You would have to redownload programs and use the nook color app from market for books. You could use titanium backup to backup and restore apps. There is a thread here and on androidtablets.net for phiremod beta 2.
But there may be a version of froyo that runs off sdcard but I am not sure how stable that is. If you are running froyo from an sdcard and mess with the nook internally, it may mess your nook up when you remove the card and try to go back to your old setup.
The good thing with the beta 2 version of phiremod is that you can restore a previous version of the nook from the clockwork recovery menu if you have cwr installed. That is if you make a backup first through cwr on your autonooter version of nook.
If you decide to go the route of a custom rom I would check out the how to on androidtablets.net about clockworkmod recovery first.

Thanks for all the info. When you say "custom roms," are you referring to any rooting of your Nook Color? Is the version of Android I have after running the AutoNooter 3.0 considered a custom rom? Or did I just merely strip off some of the "skin" Barnes & Noble has on there, 'cause it didn't seem very much like I'd started over, but more like I "got past" something that was already on there and, therefore, opened up more functionality. Does that make any sense? I'm getting the feeling that Nookie Froyo and CM7 completely wipe your Nook and give you a fresh OS. Yes?

Thanks for all the info. When you say "custom roms," are you referring to any rooting of your Nook Color? Is the version of Android I have after running the AutoNooter 3.0 considered a custom rom? Or did I just merely strip off some of the "skin" Barnes & Noble has on there, 'cause it didn't seem very much like I'd started over, but more like I "got past" something that was already on there and, therefore, opened up more functionality. Does that make any sense? I'm getting the feeling that Nookie Froyo and CM7 completely wipe your Nook and give you a fresh OS. Yes?

Yes, Nookie Froyo, CM7, Phiremod give you an entirely new OS.
Custom roms are not any rooting. They are entirely different android operating systems so to speak. Most require one to wipe the devices internal Rom (Read Only Memory) in order to put a new one on. This is sort of risky as it erases everything, but is made less risky by using stable custom roms in combo with clockwork recovery. If the internal memory gets messed up and the procedures for instaling a custom rom are not followed or an error happens, your device will be unusable until fixed (fixed usually by booting CWR off sdcard and installing a stock image). Please do research and ask around XDA or androidtablets before installing a custom rom to know what the ups and downs of it are.
Also please keep in mind on the Nook certain Roms like CM7 require a different version of CWR and require a workaround to work as of now. It can be kind of tricky to install. Phiremod Beta2 can be installed through normal recovery. Check us out over at http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/nook/ if you want. There are a lot of useful guides over there.
Yes autonooter just opens up functionality
Autonooter is not a custom Rom. It is just the method of rooting or unlocking your android device. Rooting an Android device makes you system administrator of the device. This is so you can do things beyond what B&N lets you do with the device like use the Android market.
This is what I did with my Nook. Autnootered it>installed Clockwork Recovery>Made a backup with Clockwork Recovery>Then Installed Phiremod beta2 through clockwork recovery as per the instructions for that rom

Ugh. Authentication error while reading a book and then a reset, and I'm back to the beginning. Except worse, because even navigation while reading a book doesn't work right. Anyone experience this?

Sorry I don't have that issues so I am not sure. Maybe its a password issue?

Perhaps. Don't know. Starting over from scratch. All I know is that it happened when I was merely reading a book, about ten minutes after trying to login to Google Talk with a different Google account than the one I used during the AutoNooter process.

noob needs answers to noob questions

i got a 1.2 nook in today.
wrote an image to my 8gb to get clockwork recovery. after that, i used manualnooter.
reboot and everything looked good. i could open android market and whatnot but since im an android cell phone user, i wanted cyanogen mod on my nook
flash the latest nightly/gapps but couldnt get past the "touch the android to begin screen." did the four corners trick and it worked but there was no android market and googletalk wouldnt work (i would press it and it would auto close itself)
then i flashed miui, got a bunch of FCs.
then i flashed phiremod, same problems as the latest CM mightly.
my questions:
1. whats the most stable rom?
2. im use to everything working on my phone, are there just some things that are not going to work on the NC? obviously text messages and phone arent.
3. how do i get android market on there (so i can get google maps/youtube/etc)?

You probably need to repartition your nook if it came with 1.2 pre-installed

The new nook colors have a different partition system than the old ones. Sometimes affecting installs.

sweet! repartitioning did the trick. market is up and running
however, some applications i cant install. i can search for it and click on it but there is no install button => Facebook, Groupon
did some google searching, says its a problem with the new market. can anyone confirm this? one solution was to force stop/clear data on the market application. tried that and it didnt work. help would be appreciated
