T-Mobile Throttle Data In SF? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is anyone having really slow data in San Francisco? For the last couple of days, my data speed is really slow. I can barely load a page. I'm over the 5GB cap, so I'm pretty sure T-Mobile is throttling my data. However, before I use to be able to turn data off and back on and my speed would be fine. Just wondering if anyone else in SF is noticing really slow speeds on T-Mobile.

T-mobile DOES throttle internet speeds after the GB cap is reached. Also you are in a bigger city so you will have to share the connection with more people. I've heard reports that the SF speeds can be slower in some locations.

I think TMO found a way to block us. I am also in SF and got hit by the data throttling today. I've tried changing it to edge, then back to 4g - no luck. Then I tried changing APNs.. still didn't work.

Like I said they will throttle ur speeds if u pass 5gb...they don't block u

... block us from the loophole where you change the APN in order to get around the throttle.

Well blocking a loophole is expected since not every n1 user knows/uses that its only "blocking" a few of the total # of tmo customers.

so much for unlimited haha.
but thanks, i was wondering that too
I thought it was 10GB and then they could strain the speeds or stop it all together?
10 Gigs.
Not a lot of movies.

It is unlimited, but after 5gigs they slow it down, probably to discourage you from using anymore
tether limit
i heard there is a soft cap after 5 or 10 gig but i use a **** lot and never experienced any slow down. i dont do torrents over it tho. any1 know how to set this up? set utorrent (or whatever) to use a certain port?
i used my laptop every day with my g1 tethered and it never slowed down downloaded music and movies on it also
Yeah, I think we would be pressed to find anyone who could say, "I was limited by T-Mobile because I downloaded too much."
Tmo used to have a data cap. It was 3Gb. Most other carriers have a 5-10Gb soft cap. Tmo, however, has removed the data cap, so that unlimited is now unlimited. (unless this has been changed in the last couple months, if so, someone correct me)

It is, just glad that I only use tether very rarely. Mostly when on the road, which is almost never
Unlimited data is unlimited, but this is how it works. After 10 GB, they kick you down to Edge. I don't have 3G here in El Paso, even though T-Mobile claims El Paso is a 3G city (it runs in MOST places only along I-10), so it doesn't matter to me anyway. I'm always on Edge.
My best friend works for T-Mobile and told me about how they throttle you down to Edge.

if they do kick you down to edge i wonder if it is possible to go back to 3G using anycut the way i used to be on 3G only
Unfortunately, there wouldn't be a way, because T-Mobile would be throttling your speed from their end. Your phone would still show the 3G logo, but the speed would be throttled to Edge. When the month is up though, your restriction would be removed.

tmobile told me that there is no gap on the network for android, but they will throttle your data after so much use within the month

throttling by tmo?

anyone feel like theyre being throttled by tmo? im in the socal region and i dont even have 500mB used for unlimited data. i think i read somewhere they will hold your speed back if youve used over a gig or two, but 500megs?
btw, i usually get >2mb/s, but recently have been getting .5mb/s..
No throttling in Dallas. I tethered my laptop to download a ~700 Mb file this past weekend (I don't usually do that, but I needed to). Still pulling anywhere from 2-4 Mb/s
Possibly network upgrades happening.
(Give them a call and find out)
Bandwidth can be throttled by the number of users, more users less bandwidth to go around.
I Just talked to a csr at tmo and if you have unlimited data with the nexus you will not be throttled OR capped.

hopefully there are network updates/upgrades being done. this has been the case since friday.
yeah, it's not throttling. they would push you below 500 kb/s if that were the case.
in my city, 500 kb/s is the most we get on T-Mo's 3G.. oh well.
I use around 5 gbs a month, no throttling here
Wouldn't they just shut off your 3g and force you to use edge speeds?

Same issue here - Chicago area. Dropped calls, no service, Emergency calls only and lousy 3G coverage. On G1 and N1. Hoping it's an upgrade....
I seriously doubt t-mobile is throttle speeds. On ATT in la I pull down 2.5 mbps though.
btw are you guys on the android plan?
i doubt it... tmobile has half of the subscribers that ATT does and has just as good of a network... they have no reason to throttle people...

i would say they are better, they know they have android power users and treat us as such, not like childish data wasters like AT&T has done. They also have been recently updating their network that surpasses AT&T soon enough.
^agreed, their network upgrades makes my n1 worthwhile, also I've been with them for about 6.5 years because they're the cheapest and they've got pretty good customer service

[Q] Is the rumor that the AT&T "Unlimited" plans are not as unlimited as advertised?

[Q] Is the rumor that the AT&T "Unlimited" plans are not as unlimited as advertised?
Please forgive me for asking the following as Ii am sure there are threads upon threads talking about this but it is very late, I am very tired and I would just like an answer from some of the MASTERS I know are on this site!!! I did search but nothing in the first 10 or so were what I needed
I have the Cappy w/ the "Unlimited" data plan but I've heard that once you start racking up the gigs that ATT will either begin to charge you after going over some arbitrary limit or they begin to throttle your phones data reception capability.
My brother says that T-Mo does this and has found an app to switch off his "data governor" or whatever you want to call it...
Does AT&T do this and if so, is there anyway of stopping it? I listen to online radio all day at work, haven't checked my data usage lately but I'm up in the 7+ gig range and I do seem to notice a definite decline in my already spotty 3g reception.
(I'd use WiFi but my Nazi IT guy at work has any site that streams anything he deems possible of being "recreational" data blocked(at least all the ones he has found) but yes, my Sirius and Tune-In radio app are blocked thru company WiFi)
~once again, please forgive my lazy-ass, which currently, is totally whooped from the day I've had~
The simplest "solution" would be to just stop listening to the radio as much. I don't know what you do for work but the IT guy doesn't block off those sites just to make your working conditions miserable. He is instructed to block off "recreational" sites from his superiors. In that case, you shouldn't be listening to the radio during your work hours anyways.
I don't think they would throttle your speed or charge you right off the bat. If anything, you should get a letter in the mail saying that you're using insane amounts of data. Bad 3G reception is probably placebo.
They don't do that. ATT is a lot of things, but they're not outright swindlers. If you're reaching or have breached some kind of arbitrary "cap" that you're unaware of for whatever reason, they send you a text message and probably an email as well to let you know.
And for the record, an application that "Freezes" whatever it is that tells ATT you've used up your given data is most definitely illegal. I'm talking fraud-illegality, not some silly, false open-source thing.
AT&T's plans are at a max of 2GB data limit. Unless you have been a member for years and was "grandfathered" into the "unlimited" plan that actually has a cap of 5GB. If you have used 7GB im sure they'll let you know before taking drastic actions. I just wished I would have stayed with them because I had the larger limit but briefly switched to Verizon and when I came back to AT&T I could only get the 2GB plan. I have WiFi pretty much everywhere I go though so its not so bad.

I have unlimited and have used 14 gb in a month with out a peep from at&t. The unlimited is truly unlimited.

I hope they bring back unlimited
The reason AT$T now caps data on their network is the same reason your employer also limits what data-hungry access you have to their network. Such over-use slows down the network for everyone. While you may think you should be able to use the networks as you please, work or cellular, there has to be some kind of balance so that there are many happy users instead of just a few among lots of unhappy ones. If you must have music at work, buy a radio or an iPod.
There is no throttling down of data (I made a thread on this) and there is no way for it to block app's wifi packet data.

[Q] AT & T throttling data on my LG thrill after 2GB. Any solutions?

I am paying for unlimited data plan (which means staying under top 5% users ).
This month I went on vacation, and my kids used up 2GB on netflix, and now I have data at snails pace for the next 2-3 weeks. Is there any way around this?
I am already upset that they dont have gingerbread yet for this phone.
Any help? I read that services.jar can be modified... any good guide for first time users? or anybody can help?
Thanks.
Im having the same problem my internet is so slow now im about to cancel my line with att

From 2:30 - 6:00 pm my browser speeds are horribly slow. The only way around it is to use wifi.

I am sure one way would be to change to a 4GB plan by paying an extra $10...
AT&T is not good at math.. for them "unlimited < 4GB"
All these wireless providers are doing this throttling crap. The all advertise unlimited data, then throttle the data rate at some arbitrary amount of data.
I would call AT&T and tell them to unthrottle you or you are going to go to Sprint or Virgin Mobile.
Actually, if I had it to do all over again, I would go with Virgin Mobile or Sprint. My next phone will not be an AT&T or Verizon phone.
The only reason I used AT&T was because Verizon and Sprint dont work in my wife's office.. Their service is still horrible everywhere except her workplace. I had hoped iphones may have helped AT&T, but seems Apple made most of the money

lighten the throttle just a bit 0.07Mbps is way to slow and almost unusable. Perhaps 256Kbps or 0.25Mbps is better suited.
signed, but should have put some conditions such as without raising any prices and without lowering the limited caps.
Let says carriers listened, they'll advertise "this is what consumers wanted, but here are new prices!"
we'll see how it goes though, nice approach.

T-Mobile and AT&T literaly almost spends nothing on these Bandwidth charges with these amount of customers they have especially AT&T
I have no experience with the wireless industry but at my home i pay TWENTY Dollars a month for 10Mbps Download internet that's UNLIMITED
I can torrent like 300GB of P0rn and they dont give a dam
Whats preventing me from starting my own wireless company and using local isp's in the area for backhaul
If i look into my local ISP's pricing they have 50Mbps of Unlimited internet for 79.95. well damn i can just get like 2 modems from them combined them in a switch some how and boom id have 100Mbps line
my point is data is cheap carriers are taking advantage of this and saying bandwidth costs alot.

oh, ok. thats understandable.
before i got the completely unlimited high speed data plan from tmobile, when i got throttled often, id change my data connection to edge(2g). when on edge, id get speeds of about 200kbps. on 3g/4g it averaged about 56kbps.

Well its the concept were talking about here look @ t-mobile's 500MB plan, and look @ their facebook page most of it is filled with T-Mobile sucks comments or T-Mobile is slow most of the consumer market does not understand data usage Mbps or MB/s what they care is if Facebook loads or if Instagram loads.
Take a look @ the petition page i have revised it.

Also EDGE and HSPA and LTE is almost the same its a hard throttle of 0.10Mbps
Why do companies do what they do? For profit. They want throttling to really hurt to entice the user to upgrade their data package. Simple as that.
