I haven't been able to mess with my phone a lot, as I have been very busy with TF2.
Recently my phone broke (AGAIN!) so I had to revert it to Stock.
But I was running some hacked-up version of the 2.2 beta. When my new phone comes, I want to be running the 2.2 stock firmware.
Where is the offical 2.2 stock ROM?
No such animal for AT$T, yet.
If I remember correctly, 2.2 was supposed to be out in September. What happened?

Samsung happened...
There was a post around here about carrier/samsung drama, royalties, etc.; no official Samsung 2.2 rom out (though there are a lot of roms which i'd reckon to be way, way better than anything samsung could put out).
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF oh well.
Any good unoffical 2.2 builds?

Plenty of them. Just check in the Dev section and browse all the ROM's. Pretty much all of them are running either 2.2 or 2.2.1. Just find one with the features you want and flash.
My preference is Perception. Runs smooth for me and does everything I need.

There is an official rogers build. Also Cognition 3 and firefly both of which are based on the official rogers build (2.2). Check in android dev section.
I read that it is not a royalty issue it is a carrier issue. The 2.2 for Vibrant is starting to roll out today through Kies, and I read that it was released to T-Mobile in November. But T-mobile had to add their icons and bloatware before release. So ATT is most likely the reason we don't officially have Samsung ATT release. Either all the bloatware like Elcair 2.1 or they just don't care.
Wow, an official 2.2 release from a US carrier! Just found the official statement at http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/Samsung-Vibrant/Samsung-Vibrant-software-upgrade-to-Android-2-2-Froyo-now/td-p/678871.

So you haven't seen the 3-1000 other threads talking about the Vibrant getting Froyo?

Problem is thanks to locked bootloader we still have to rely on them for a kernel
Hopefully they'll provide us with a good Froyo kernel with the official release, but we'll never get a true Gingerbread kernel

It doesnt matter anyways. I'm running gingerbread for several days now and it runs flawless. The speed is amazing and the improvement compared to 2.2 is noticeable. You wont be needing a 2.3 kernel. I think the milestone can stay with this. Installing an AOSP Gingerbread + some memory tweaks in open recovery juices the most from this phone. Flash works perfectly! Can it get better than this?
I believe when the minor bugs(mostly unnoticeable) in Gingerbread will be fixed everything is going to be great.
So who cares about motorola anyways?!
may someone kindly explain how is this possible to "run" gingerbread on froyo kernel (as same as it was with froyo running on eclair kernel)?
What exactly do we get by running new OS without new kernel?
What will be better if we would have gingerbread kernel for the gingebread roms?
It would be nice to know why is this, not just how it manifests.
With the froyo leak, a new kernel was released, so there are a lot of ROMs that can replicate froyo performance for real now... and please correct me if i'm wrong but gingerbread is based on the froyo kernel right? so thats why we've already got froyo as well as GB roms for milestone...
if we are lucky end of February, early March official release is to be expected
Yeah froyo will be one your er.. our phone in two weeks.

no, there is some difference in version number
btw people writing things like
"in two weeks"
"at the end of the march"
are wild guesses, right? or do you have any background info you can share with us?

Official statements are still in the form of Q1 2011...the rest is guessing. I suggest you root your phone and learn how to flash ROMs. Froyo (2.2) is the end of the line for our phone from Mot...but the community already has 2.3 working.

I've already had tried almost every rom available for milestone, I just hope that the official froyo release will bring the devs some better ground to build their roms on, isn't that right? Won't be the official froyo release any better?

You are probably right to a certain extent...the kernel and motor drivers are not release/final. But for all we know, the latest leak is final.
What problems remain for you?
The latest android leak has excellent battery life and performance in CM7 is through the roof...

I had a look through the Android development section and couldn't really find anything above 2.2. My GF has a captivate and she's finally willing to do away with the carrier installed stuff.
And IF there are no 2.3 ROMs (which really doesn't make any sense because I've been running 2.3 on my DZ since the start of January), what are some of the better 2.2 ones?

Don't Forget Serendipity, great support ,frequent updates
2.3 ROMs aren't out yet.
But there are some really nice 2.2.1 ROMs, di11igaf's rom being one of them

Serendipity is the best one I've found, Mike has a great eye for design, and he and Chance have great ideas on functionality. They pay close attention to detail and update the ROM frequently with easily flashed .zips in recovery (no wiping involved unless it's a major update). It's built on 2.2.1.

Care to enlighten the masses on this? Cyanogen's been trolling (IMO) on his wiki:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S:_Flashing_CyanogenMod
"NOTE: As of right now CyanogenMod is not available for the Samsung Galaxy S family. Please check the wiki or the Samsung Galaxy S sub-forum for updates."
But then again, I suppose if you have a large amount of expertise and win in your arsenal, you could fit all of the witchcraft to the Captivate, unless I'm a complete noob and Cyanogen got a ROM hidden away that I'm not aware of.
Serindipity is one that I've been looking into. I have her phone ready to rock and roll, rooted + CWM. Just need to decide on a ROM
I find it strange that the Galaxy S lineup still doesn't have a publicly available 2.3 ROM... considering the first device to ship with 2.3 was the Nexus S. IIRC it has a near identical hardware set as the Fascinate, Captivate, Vibrant, I9000 etc.
LOVE Pargaon RC6....Great ROM! Stable, fast, and great GPS! It is 2.2.1. No 'working' 2.3 roms out as of yet!

Here's a captivate update zip. Follow the instructions on the CM forums for the initial install using the GT-I9000 rom, and then follow the update instructions using this captivate package.

As for it not making sense, The whole reason you have been able to run it is that HTC likes putting the source code up as to where we are still trying to get it from Samsung. Heck 2.2 official just dropped to day. lol
You will get 10 different answers as to some good roms. Just have a read in the threads and chose one that seems good to you.
Ok so 2.2 offically came out for captivate today.
I know There is Cog 3.03v which I am running.
Cog 4 came out like 2 days ago.
And I don't have any clue when a Stable rom is coming out for 2.3 Gingerbread.
I am probably going to flash stock (thats odin right?) tonight.. then go to Cog 4 tonight.
I am not really interested in gingerbread theme's so much as the actual changes.
Can anyone break down why cog 4 is an entirely different rom than 3.03v?
My understanding is its a modified version of the stock at&t froyo although I could be wrong.. So I am guessing 3.03v is a ported version of froyo from some similar phone.
Any idea what is going to give best over all performance?
I would like to think 2.3 gingerbread is coming out soon in the form of a rom.. but, I am also not holding my breath.
Advice would be appreciated.

I read first 3 or 4 post on each one.
Neither of them answered what I wanted them to.
Being blunt I'd be grateful if you proved me wrong.

Hello everyone,
I was just curious how all these gingerbread ROMs for the Captivate are being released, and Cyanogen 2.3 for the Capitivate, having been worked on for months, is still only in pre-beta. I am not trying to be impatient, I know the devs are working hard to get cyanogen out ASAP, I was just curious why this was.
Thank you.

simply put CM7 is being written and developed from "scratch" and the jvb jvh roms are ported.
Not to mention that the CM7 for captivate is running 2.3.4 so technically "we're" behind CM7

AOSP is the way to go in the long run as more Samsung drivers get ported over. 2.4.x will probably never be ported to the Galaxy S phones by Samsung, but unless there are major kernel changes, upgrading CyanogenMod to 2.4 will happen relatively quickly.

I see, so once it is caught up with the other cyanogen supported phones, it will be on the same update cycle, and therefore be more sustainable when it comes to new releases of android?
Frankly cm7 is actually being developed, where as the other ginger bread releases are being cooked/tweaked. Samsung did 80% of the work then xcal kicked in the next 15%.
So to answer your question, the reason it is "behind" is because they are not using a pre optimized build, and they are developing from the ground up.

Are there any 2.3 roms yet? I havnt been on here very much and im still running a 2.2 rom. Its been kinda glitchy, i wanted to switch to the stock 2.2 but I only have macs and the program was for windows only. My friend showed me his captivate today and he was running 2.3. But when i asked him how he did it he said he had a friend do it. Can someone get me a link to a working 2.3 rom?
