Hey all,
I have to send my phone back on insurance. However, the screen is jacked. It got a crack on the inside (no cracks on outer glass or dings on the phone itself - really weird). I can only see a small portion of the screen - the rest is all black.
I'm currently running Perception and I'd like to get it back to stock and do a master clear. Getting it back to stock shouldn't be an issue, but the master clear might be as I'm not sure how I can get it back into USB debugging mode to do a wipe since I can't see enough of the screen to do it.
Is there a way I can have the output display on my laptop, like in the screen shots, or anything like that? Replacement should be here tomorrow.
Thanks!
Super
Same thing happened to me. Why worry about stock? You are paying $125 for the ins claim. You are not filing warranty
Fine enough, but I'd still like my personal data wiped off of it.
Yea, had same concern, not sure how to go about it though

Though I would have just told them I lost it.
Okay, I have an idea. This may work if you can at least get into download mode.
Use Odin to flash back to stock with wipe data. (3 button) Then it should be bone stock minus that your internal SD will still have your stuff on it. Then when stock with the usb connected and powered on, the phone should go to default USB setting and connect to the computer when inserted. Maybe you can delete the internal SD data in there.
Let me know if this works.
The following command should do a hard reset by launching the dialer and dialing the code from a command line if you can adb shell into the phone.
am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN -n com.sec.android.app.dialertab/.DialerTabActivity -a android.intent.action.DIAL -d tel:*2767*3855%23
The factory reset code would, I believe, be: *%23*%237780%23*%23*
Warning, I don't know if you will be asked for confirmation before the action is taken. If I recall, the hard reset doesn't ask.

This worked. Got in enough that I could get what I needed out and delete the rest. Thanks!

stock rom and everything, just no bloatware.
this morning it worked perfect, about 2 hours later is all retarted.
1)the backlight is dim and doesnt get as bright as its supposed to unless i plug it in
2)when i slide the phone open the screen doesnt flip the other way
3)getting multiple "cannot execute" errors of clocknot.exe, repllog.exe, calnot.exe. these pop up and i have to click OK 20+ times and less than a minute later they came back on again. actually now i cant even get them to go away.
4)i left my phone alone for a while after realizing something was wrong with it and when i came back to it was just constantly vibrating, i dont know for how long but it killed 60% of my battery.
software i installed is just your basic stuff, tomtom, touchflo cube, htc touch dialer and touch today setup, htc home customizer and battery status and i think thats pretty much it.
anybody have any idea on what might have happened? like i said, the phone worked perfect this morning. i put it down, went a swim, came back and it wasnt working right so i did a soft reset and it didnt fix anything. i put it back down, took a nap, came back and it was vibrating and then i did another soft reset and thats when i got all the error messages. so i did another soft reset and still doesnt want to work.
wait, now for some reason it seems to be OK after another soft reset. I DONT GET IT.
so now i received and sent a text message and then closed the phone, it locked and turned the screen off. i then put it on the charged and the screen wouldnt turn back on now matter what button i pushed. but the lights on top blinked and when i opened it the keyboard lit up. so once again....another soft reset
you probably should hard reset your phone. but be aware that it will erase evrything on ur phone and return it back the way it was, so backup ur info
Yes, I second that. Make sure to back up your data before hard-resetting, though, as you will lose it all (contacts, files, everything).
To hard reset the phone, press and hold the two soft keys (buttons on the front that have a dash on them; next to the send and end buttons) while pushing the stylus into the reset hole in the bottom. If you do it correctly, a white screen will come up asking you if you want to do this, and just follow the steps until it is finished.
Please post back and tell us the result.

Use the latest version of "SPB backup" to backup all data before you hard reset and you restore the all applications after a hard reset or even a ROM Upgrade.
P.S: I don't work for SPB... I just like the software

Don't just back everything up as you may just re-introduce the problem on restore!
Back up your contacts and volotile data only (sync it with Outlook if you use it).
Hard reset and then install 1 app/util at a time and test the device each time to check stability.
Hang on a second...
Before you hard-reset...
Open your favorite file explorer application (I use GSFinder, but the default WM6 File Explorer should be fine), and browse to the Storage Card folder. If there's more than one, keep reading.
I store lots of applications on the microSD card itself, and I often take the card out of the Tilt, and put it into a card reader for faster file transfer. Sometimes, this results in the Tilt thinking I have multiple microSD cards when I put it back in. I haven't quite nailed down what causes this (I haven't searched, either, the answer might be on XDA-dev somewhere).
The end result is, the Tilt is looking for stuff that isn't in the /Storage Card folder. Instead, the phone recognizes the card as /Storage Card2 or /Storage Card3.
I have run into the EXACT same problem you've got, with the same errors. Every time, I've been able to correct it by removing the physical card, and then deleting all the /Storage Card (1,2,3) folders that are still on the phone.
After you do that, just insert the card again, and it will be recognized as simply /Storage Card without any numbers after it. Now the applications will work properly, as WM6 will be looking at the right folders.
ok sorry, havent been back on. phone was working great until last night and then it started acting up again. after multiple soft resets it started working fine again this morning.
there is only one storage card listed so thats not my problem but thank you for the idea.
looks like ill just take any stuff of the phone i want when i get home and do a hard reset. do they replace these phones for software issues with a stock ROM?
happened again, should i try to see if they will replace the phone?
anyone know if i need to call to do that or do i need to go to a certified at&t place?
If you are using the Stock ROM and have performed a hard reset and it still has problems then return it under warranty.

There are no more certified ATT places around here, everything is by phone and mail. If it is still under warranty thats what I would do if you are unsure of it's long term condition.
i am still stock ROM. it locked up on me again yesterday and i did a hard reset. hopefully it wont happen again. i dont feel like customizing my phone from scratch yet again
So, last night, I had a bit to drink and apparently threw my phone, according to my friends, and the screen is completely broke. I have my phone rooted, so I just want to make sure...i should probably put it back to stock software before i replace it, right?
it still works besides the screen, and i know i can probably get it into download mode, because the button combos work for me.
another question, once i flash back to stock, would i have to do a master clear as well? im just trying to not void my warranty.
Im not sure about the master clear question but I do know that you would need to return to stock or at least the 2.2 Froyo upgrade. If you cant get the warranty to work your looking at spending about 200$ to replace the glass and digitizer.

yeah, im really hoping that i dont have to go the screen replacement route. hopefully this works and i can just spend the 120 for the insurance replacement. i just dont want to return it today and have them contact me later and screw me with a full phone replacement price...although i probably deserve the $530 or so that it is. haha.
ok, just flashed it back to stock, worked perfectly thank god. attempting a master clear now...not sure if this will work...started it and odin seems to be stuck on just the 'master clear started' line.
edit*** master clear isnt working, so does anybody know the set of files/ folders that are on the phone when it is freshly master cleared? i just dont want to leave anything on there that would let them know i rooted and flashed stuff. i can access the root of my phone on my computer, so i just would like to know which files i should have...anybody know this by chance? i have the following files:Android, bluetooth, data, DCIM, download, downloads, external_sd, LOST.DIR, media, and mirenbrowser
for some reason it wont let me delete mirenbrowser, but that shouldnt matter at all.
hey if it stays stuck at that screen then just take it back to the store and tell them thats whats caused you to throw it

haha, i wish i knew why i threw it. and my phone didnt get stuck at all, just odin didnt work. probably dont have the right usb settings, and theres no way of changing those with how my screen looks. oh well. last time i replaced my phone i returned one with a bunch of files from custom roms, and didnt have an issue, so i think ill be fine.
If u think u will be fine. Why post this question?

Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
If you are making a warranty claim and paying the $125, why don't you just say you lost the phone?
I sent in a warranty exchange with a cracked screen while on a custom rom. Who cares, you are paying for the replacement, only thing that sucks is personal info left on phone
MIUI

When you master clear make sure to follow these steps exactly:
Open Odin > Put phone into USB Debug Mode > Plug Phone into computer via USB > Click Master Clear
If that doesn't work, simply go to the phone and follow this:
Settings > Privacy > Factory Data Reset
Or try this:
Go into Recovery Mode (Turn phone off completely > Hold Power + Up and Down Volume Keys > Wait for phone to go through first screen cycle, and when the AT&T Screen comes up again, release the power button, while still holding the volumes keys until you reach recovery mode) Then choose "wipe factory data/factory reset" (it should be something like that) by moving up and down with the volume keys and select it with the power key.
Also, I broke my screen too (the same way sadly... ) but I found a replacement on Ebay for about $100. And it was one of the EASIEST replacements ever. There are videos on youtube, etc. Here is the cheapest I found on Ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/LCD-Digitizer-screen-at-t-Samsung-Captivate-i897-/250791260919?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a6452f2f7
The LCD has gone haywire on my NC and I can't see any of the screens to reset it to stock.
I am running MIUI on it, and did the 8 consecutive reboots to get it to boot into recovery, but I can't see the options on the screens.
B&N has the replacement on the way, I just need to send this back per the agreement.
Any ideas on how I can get thing back to factory given that parts of the screen is unreadable?
What would you do?

Use ADB to make it unbootable, just start removing directories.
you can try something like this
Code:
adb shell
format SYSTEM:
format DATA:
format CACHE:
I had the same problem. I used android screencast to help me wipe my nook. It didn't work especially well but it will display the screen on your PC so that you can see what's going on. Unless it's been updated since I did it the screen will be turned 180 degrees and you won't be able to control it from the PC but it will work well enough to help you see what's going on.

Thanks guys...I've never used ADB, but I am downloading the SDK now. Its taking forever.
I think I may be able to figure it out between both of those suggestions.
The only other question I have is about my registration for the Market. I read one place where you should deregister your device before the new one comes in. How can I do that if I can't go into settings?
There's no way to deregister the device without doing it from the device itself. If you do the screencast option you can go through the steps to deregister the device which will in turn return it to factory condition and obviously remove it from your account on BN.

You don't deregister from the Android Market, although you probably want to deregister the Nook from your Barnes and Noble account and you can do that over the phone with B&N support.
I'm stuck.
I can't get Screencast to work because I can't check to see if it's in debug mode or detected by adb devices.
All I see is the boot recovery screen with a bunch of lines going through. The only option that is visible is "wipe cache partition".
If someone could tell me what other options are on this menu, so I can navigate up and down to reset this thing, that would be great.
Like, how many clicks down or up on each screen to completely wipe and reset to stock.
Or, if I just returned on RMA this thing, as is, would that prevent them from sending me a replacement (which I mistakenly though they did already)?
Who has screenshots of all the boot menus?
Bump - any thoughts?
Long story short: my mom dropped her Note 4 into water and got it out quickly. Her case was so so water tight, no water actually got into the battery compartment as both water damage indicators do not show damage.
Screen comes on, looks normal, but the phone shows the splash screen and just reboots.
I *CAN* reboot into the recovery mode menu. I tried getting a T-mobile Note 4 update file, putting it on a SD Card and trying to update the phone. No luck.
Phone does not show up as a storage device hooked up the computer, nor will Kies detect it.
The only thing she really wants is her contact list.
Any ideas? Is there some sort of file manager I could access through the recovery mode screen to go extract the contacts?
Lastly, no, she does not sync her contact list to Google.
Thanks in advance to any help.
Maybe her contacts are saved to the sim. Not rooted right? The tried and true method seems to give it a couple days in rice and try and boot again. I haven't had to do it(knock on wood) but I assume take everything out and cover off.
Yeah, it didn't help. Ended up using the recovery mode to wipe it. Then fried the chips to prevent recovery since I wasn't able to do my usual device return protocol (encrypt whole device, wipe, encrypt again, download large empty files to fill up space, wipe).

Is your mom a spy? Bummer it didn't work.
LOL! No, but she had passwords stored as plain text (unencrypted). Not a great idea I know, but I don't think she understands these things.
So I shattered my display and the screen wont turn on but it still vibrates when i get notifications, i was wondering if anyone would know of a way to sort of project the display onto a TV or PC so i can use apps that i installed to backup messages and app data and stuff?
I'm pretty sure if the phone still works you can run it in ADP on your PC and basically click through the phone. Then do whatever you need to do and back it up.

Here's the problem with that:
ADB doesn't work unless you first enable it in developer options. Once you do that, you have to click yes on a confirmation dialog the first time you use it. Both of these processes require a functioning screen.
If you have an unlocked phone with TWRP installed, and you can blindly convince the phone to boot into TWRP (maybe by booting into bootloader and using fastboot reboot-recovery, but I'll have to check and see if that command works when I get home. I think it does.), you'll be able to access the data on your phone by simply plugging it into a computer. If you do not have TWRP installed, and you have no lockscreen set up (no swipe, no password, no pin, no nothing), you might be able to access the data by plugging it into a computer after it boots.
If none of those situations apply, and the data is worth about $100 to you, you might want to look into a screen replacement service. Sometimes you can find little electronics places in malls or shopping centers that will do it, and I'm pretty sure there are businesses that you can mail your phone to and they'll mail it back once the work is completed. A friend of mine even found a service that sent someone to her house to replace her screen then and there.
Thanks, booting into TWRP worked and I was able to get most of the stuff I needed. I completely forgot I could get into it that way.
