Flashing my phone to the way it was. - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I want my phone back to the way it was on android 2.1 so I can update to 2.2.
I got 2.2 on my phone before it was officially released, and had to do it with other CSC etc.
So I want my phone back to the way it was when I bought it, how will I be doing this?
I remember I had JM2 when I got it.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT:
Found this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846913
Those are the ones you get when buying the phone right? So, can I just pick the JM2 and flash it?

Please help.

yes the ones in that link are official stock ROMs just flash which ever you desire and your phone is 100% original again.

Alright then, thanks.
I'm trying to find a tutorial on how to flash it, since it's been awhile. But I can only find tutorials for custom roms.

the tutorial is in the link, its relatively easy. have you downloaded the stock rom you want ?? does it come in 1 file or 3

It's still downloading it, but it's 1 file in .exe format.
The CSC's in that thread, does not include a JM2 one. Am I missing something? And what PIT file do I have to use?

im confused ??? its in .exe format ? wait till it download and then open it and make sure... if it needs a pit it should all be in there, a lot of stock roms come in just 1 .tar file.

I think it's a 7zip.
Alright, I'll just reply in this thread when there's something I need. Thanks for the help so far.

The PIT file isn't included, do I really need to use it or is it optional?
I think I have to use the 512.

just make sure re-partition is checked before you flash.

Alright.
But I think I have a little problem.
When I connect my phone, "0:[COM3]" shows up yellow in Odin. Shouldn't it be green?
Screenshot: http://i52.tinypic.com/34j4ufk.png
(I hope it's clear)
And it's just stuck there.

its supposed to be yellow.

Ok, but does it take long for it to go on?
I've tried it without the PIT file but then this happens.
<ID:0/003> Added!!
<ID:0/003> Odin v.3 engine (ID:3)..
<ID:0/003> File analysis..
<ID:0/003> SetupConnection..
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)

have you extracted the files ?? or did it come in 1 file ?

Procedure:
1.Open ODIN. (And close Kies, if you have it open. It is important to have ODIN open BEFORE connection the phone via USB!)
2.Select the PDA/Modem/CSC/.PIT files in Odin. (For kernel flashes, only PDA is required. For FW flashes, .PIT and at least a PDA is required. Some PDAs have Modem and CSC integrated. Make sure you have the correct .PIT file. Usually 512.pit)
3.Check the "Re-Partition" checkbox.
4.Turn the phone into the download mode by pressing and holding VolumeDown+Home+Power.
5.Connect your phone with your computer and wait until the drivers are installed.
6.When the drivers are installed, click Start.
7.The phone will be flashed and once it’s finished, it will boot up. (Do NOT disconnect the usb-cable, remove the battery or otherwise interrupt this process!)
8.You have successfully flashed your phone.

That's what I forgot, the download mode.
But the Re-partition has to be un-checked? Should it be checked or not?

check it, if you have all 3 files. and pit. then everything will be normal

Ok, it's going good so far.
You have been a great help, I really appreciate it
It did say something about having no access to multi-something. But other went fine.

good, just be sure to let it boot properly. sometimes it can take 15mins to boot up so dont panic. as long as ODIN says PASS, all is well.

I got another question.
Since it's android 2.1 and 2.2 being released. Kies should tell you that there is an update?
But Kies says: This version of the device cannot be updated.
By current firmware version it says: PDA:JM2 / PHONE:JM1 / CSC:JM1
Something wrong?

[TUTORIAL][ROM] How to fix your phone and apply the update

I have talked to many people that had issues applying the OTA update. Here are the steps to get your phone back to stock and apply the update.
As always, I'm not responsible for anything. yadda yadda.
First, download http://www.multiupload.com/NMPX3KMWRS
This contains Odin, the Samsung Drivers, stock odin rom, updated odin rom, pit file.
If you don't want to lose your settings, etc. you can skip to the second part. If your phone still doesn't work than start from the top.
-PART 1-
Step 1.) Make sure you have the appropriate drivers installed for your phone. If you are on 64bit then choose 64, if you are on 32 choose 32. You may already have the drivers installed and it will tell you after you try to install them.
Step 2.) Power your phone off
Step 3.) Open Odin.exe and plug a usb cable to your computer that will connect to your phone (do not plug it in to the phone yet, just the computer)
Step 4.) Hold down both volume buttons at the same time and while holding them down plug the usb into your phone. You should see a COM message show up in Odin.
Step 5.) To ensure your phone is back to stock, in odin you will want to check the repartition button. ONLY CHECK IT WHEN YOU ARE FLASHING BACK TO STOCK. Leave the other check boxes the way they are.
Step 6.) Click the PIT button and select the 512.pit file
Step 7.) Click the PDA button and select Original.tar and then click Start
It should go through a bunch of steps and then your phone will reboot. Below are the steps to update it to the latest release.
Close Odin and power your phone off.
-PART 2-
Step 1.) Open Odin.exe and plug a usb cable to your computer that will connect to your phone (do not plug it in to the phone yet, just the computer)
Step 2.) Hold down both volume buttons at the same time and while holding them down plug the usb into your phone. You should see a COM message show up in Odin.
Step 3.) Leave all check boxes the way they are. Do NOT check the repartition box.
Step 4.) Click the PIT button and select the 512.pit file
Step 5.) Click the PDA button and select T959UVJI6.tar and then click Start
It will go through a bunch of steps and then your phone will reboot. Congrats, you are on the latest update!
This should be stickied in general so the whole first page isn't taken up with topics about being soft bricked.
When you say updated odin rom, is this the official updated ota that its rolling out now?

Beautiful. Thank you for the post. Will do this later tonight and update the sticky in general. Thank you!
I assume with this method you lose your apps and settings? That's not the case with the ota... I could be wrong.
will this work on a hardware lock phone?

You are correct - the fix with the repartition will wipe all your data, but it actually should not be necessary to flash back to the stock ROM. We resolved this problem on the main thread for this issue earlier today by just using ODIN 1.3 to flash to the JI6 ROM directly. This approach saves all user data and restores the phone directly to the new version without losing any user settings or data.
Edit:
The older thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=802828
The solution we found is pretty much identical to the final 5 steps above in the OP post - many of us have executed just those steps to restore without reverting to stock and without losing user data.
Edit 2 - Thanks youneek for updating the instructions with this option
Can I flash over J14 or do I need to revert to stock?
Thank you for this thread. I was able to revert back to stock and flash JI6. I know that it wasn't necessary to go back down to stock but I just wanted to start everything over. It went very smoothly, I actually did it while I was sitting in my night's class lol.
How long?
How long should it take for the first Odin cycle - returning to stock - to take?
Odin 3.1 has been running for at least 15 minutes. ID: COM shows as 0:[COM6]. PIT and PDA are appropriate. The Odin message area reads:
<ID:0/006> Added!!
<ID:0/006> Odin v.3 engine (ID:6)..
<ID:0/006> File analysis..
<ID:0/006> Set PIT file..

Everything for me took less than 5 minutes.

Entire Odin took me less than 5 minutes last time I did it.
This happened to me the first time I odin'd my phone .... I restarted the phoen and got the Phone--PC error. Just get back to download mode & restart the flash, should work next time through.
Considering what Odin does, it is a very buggy program and is prone to crashes.
Thank you
Easy, breezy, beautiful !!!
The update doesn't wipe the data if you had a stock ROM before that. All my apps and settings are intact after the installation just perfect...
Just have a question: is it ok to root the phone with one-click-root?
Thanks again...

So, if I need to try again, what do I do (besides not turning off my Vibrant)?
I've done the update but now when I try to root the phone again, I get a 'E:cannot open /sdcard update.zip (No such file or directory)' now when I choose re-install packages. I've tried the one click root apk method and the update.zip placed in the directory manually. Nada. Whats the deal?
My directories are labeled D and F when mounted on my pc if it means it's looking for it in E now...

Hi all,
I've read almost every post about the update, but still have some questions so here goes.
I'm on complete stock, untouched. didn't even install clockwirkmod recovery. The ONLY thing I did was root.
I'm out of the US so obviously no OTA for me.
I was wandering if I need to unroot inorder to use the Odin method and wether it is possible to reroot after. Does the update break root, does it have any this to do with it?
Also, is flashing clockwork rec risking anything? Afterall I understand I have to nandroid backup so I need it right?
Thx
BTW, this is my first post (noob) so will be happy to get a bit more than the common nutshell answer since I'm new

i followed these steps but i can't make my phone go into download menu. damn it! the ota taking too long to arrive.
OMG!
This fix the phone!
My phone was bricked by OTA and this method DOES recover my phone back to normal. I could even recover my important DATA!
PS. T-mobile can't recover my data.
Thank you superman in XDA.

[Q] odin help - not flashing back to stock

OK, I flashed to a new ROM and would now like to flash back to the stock ROM due to some issues with the new ROM, but whenever I do it, I wind right back where I started, with the flashed ROM, not the stock ROM (2.1). I may have deleted a file that is needed to get back to stock. Is there such a file? I follow all the instructionals and everything works well, it just doesn't flash back to stock?
We would need allot more details in order to pinpoint where you are going wrong.
My best guess is that you are not being recognized by odin, you are clicking start and nothing is happening. How long is the odin flash taking?
CM7
Im using Odin 3 v1.00. With the Captivate, I go into download mode and Odin recognizes it. I get the following
<ID:0/009> Added!!
Then I click start and the list expands to
<ID:0/009> Added!!
<ID:0/009> Odin v.3 engine (ID:9)..
<ID:0/009> File analysis..
<ID:0/009> Get PIT for mapping..

<ID:0/009> Removed!!
It says Reset up top, but when the phone reboots, it just reboots back to the Cognition 4.1.1 that I was running
I had this exact problem last night, I was trying to flash back to stock from a I9000 ROM I had installed and it wasn't running good for me. So I did what I had done in the past, I was using the Captivate ToolBox to flash back to stock, my phone would go into Download mode, but Odin never saw it. I thought that was odd, so I tried the regular Odin flash to stock as well, using the pulling the battery and holding down vol up and down and plugging in the USB. Still Odin didn't see my phone.... I then rebooted my computer, put my phone in download mode and plugged in into my computer and for some odd reason Windows said it was installing new drivers for my device. After it completed, Odin saw my phone and I was able to flash back to stock, so you could try that, it may help you.
EDIT...Oops, sorry not the same deal I had, sorry..
Try different usb port
Make sure odin is open first
Be aware of what build tourer phone is, located under battery something like 1008. If 1010 our higher don't use one click
If box in odin turns yellow and days "com#" then you are recognized if not you are not
Phone must be in dl mode
Correct drivers must be installed
CM7
Beowulf, you commented
YYou need to supply the firmware file to flash (click on the "PDA" button, and browse to where you downloaded it--you *did* download it, right?), and optionally the ".pit" file if you need to re-partition when you flash.
I think you are right, but what would I point to in order to flash back to stock? Where would I get it? I can find what to point to if I wanted to flash to Cognition 4.1.1 or one of the other custom ROM's, but I cant seem to find what file I can download/point to in order to restore to stock ROM.

I believe I installed the correct drivers (that allow me to connect to Odin) as I do get the yellow box and it says 0:[com9]. Phone is in download mode. Also, it says 1008 under the battery.

I wound up following teh lead that Beowulf gave me as I was using the full blown Odin and not the 1 click. When I watched videos on how to flash back to stock, I did wonder why teh version I was using looked different. I had assumed that it was just a slightly newer version.
To make a long story short. Once I used the 1 click Odin, I flashed back to stock easily. Thanks to all for your help. Much appreciated.

Help with Soft brick GALAXY S

I can get back into recovery mode. I tried flashing it with the PIT PDA and CSC file. It fails constantly, i clicked re partition in one flash too it didnt work either. SO i am stuck. Any other suggestions?
Using odin 1.3 - It worked the multiple other times i flash it to different roms.
Maybe you're using Windows x64? try using another version of Odin, possibly 1.7 & make sure when you open it to go to the correct pit file & not the last one opened, also if the phone is going back do a wipe/factory rest too in recovery mode & then try reflashing with Odin, hope that helps.
Hi i used a windows XP machine with the same results. I did try 1.3 and 1.7.
is there another PIT file i can try? I downloaded a couple and neither worked.
I have no recovery anymore only download mode, the phone does not boot at all no phone -> computer icon.
Is the 512 PIT file the right one for the galaxy thought it was.
Have you tried redownloading the firmware? Or another source for the same firmware? Maybe its corrupt somehow. I know it is supposed to check the md5 but worth a shot. Or try an earlier version of your firmware, if it is for return they shouldn't care.
G
I have tried 3 - 4 different roms with all the same result, the phone was going back under a different issue (network related). It always fails at the same point from each rom.
Steps i have done.
1. pit file only (repartition)
2. pit pda and csc (512 pit , vodaAU stock rom, voda au csc)
3. standard stock rom (which worked) but doesnt now.
4. Darkys resurrection rom (failed same spot)
5. odin 1.3 and odin 1.7
6. windows 7 and windows XP
I am annoyed about this, the other times worked fine! Just went i went to send it back for replacement . boom failed.
I tried a more recent ginger rom, failed again act factory.rfs. It's almost like the internal SDcard is broken. This time it flashed modem.bin
Did you remember to turn off the lagfix before the first flash? If the file system is ext4 and you flash RFS then I think that you can have issues.
There is a way to fix it as I was on another thread today where that was the issue but I don't know if the error showed up in Odin for them.
Just another thought...
G
BTW I think in most cases odin will still flash OK even if SD card is cooked. We i9000m owners know way too much about that...
After google search you also might try 1) another odin or heimdall - personally I'd try heimdall at this point if I were you or EZ odin maybe? 2) You likely know not to have kies agent in the tray but hey worth mentioning 3)redownload drivers (which I'll guess that you've done too)
Hi mate ,
Yes i did disable lag fix before flash i kept the orig rfs file system did not convert to EXT4. I might try Heimdall.

All taskmanager escaped all the kies stuff, reinstalled kies as well.
3)redownload drivers (which I'll guess that you've done too)
Did this on two machines.
EZ odin fixed it. It booted i just put my providers CSC on it, im pretty sure they wont check the base band and rev number when they get it back.
Glad it worked!

[Q] Screwed up Tab with Roto Backup

I was good when I first got my Tab, and followed all best practices, and made a Roto Backup of my Tab right after rooting.
I just tried to flash my Roto Restore back, and now my Tab is messed up. On startup, it will flash some corrupted graphics and static, play the Samsung sound and then sit on a black screen until it shuts off.
Fortunately, I still seem able to boot to download mode.
This is the procedure I followed to Roto Restore:
adb push data.tar.gz /sdcard/data.tar.gz
adb shell su -c "tar -zxvf /sdcard/data.tar.gz"
adb reboot download
Click to collapse
Then from a Linux system, I executed:
tar -cf mybackup.tar cache.rfs dbdata.rfs factoryfs.rfs modem.bin param.lfs zImage
Then I opened up Odin, connected in download mode, and flashed the tar as PDA, with all options default.
How do I fix my tab, and how do I restore my Roto Backup?
Hmm in case anyone is able to help, now the situation is slightly worse. I realized I had a .pit file in my Roto Backup folder that I had not accounted for, so I flashed that again via Odin/download mode together with the .tar as PDA.
Now Odin seems to be hung doing nothing with this text:
<ID:0/005> Added!!
<ID:0/005> Odin v.3 engine (ID:5)..
<ID:0/005> File analysis..
<ID:0/005> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/005> Initialzation..
<ID:0/005> Set PIT file..
<ID:0/005> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
It's been like this for about 15 minutes now with no activity.
Any advice on what to do?
Is anyone able to help me?
After Odin sat there for 4 hours doing nothing, I finally closed it and turned off the Tab. Now I can no longer get to download mode, and whenever I turn it on, there's a picture of a cell phone and a picture of a computer with a yellow exclamation mark in between.
Okay, final update for today, I found out from another thread that if you're lucky it's still in download mode even though it you get the dreaded yellow triangle.
I was lucky.
I used the fact that Odin could still flash it to reflash to Team Overcome's European stock safe ROM. Not exactly where I wanted to end up, but I'm just happy my Tab isn't a brick.
I'm a little scared to try and use my Roto Backup again, can anyone advise me on what the proper way to use this is without turning your Tab into a brick?
If you are in download mode, just flash a JME or other froyo rom. You have to use a .pit file and check the repartition box.
Get your tab working, then work on getting it to stock.

Yeah, it's working again now, I'm running Overcome's stock safe ROM which is JQ1 I believe.
How can I use my Roto Backup now to re-stock?
Not until you flash a froyo rom first, like I already told you above, or you will get the crazy rainbows from messed up bootloaders.

so you say, flash stock rom froyo (lets say from samfirm)
use p1.pit (as it says in the site)
check the repartition
also to put the 'tar' (rom) file in pda and go?
after checking on my tab, that's a yes.
When you get your froyo rom flashed, and you confirm everything works, you must do this next step:
Go find the chainfire bootloader patch. Froyo roms have bootloaders that can make your tab dead.
With the bootloader safely patched, then you are free to do anything.

[Q] bricked galaxy s? which firmware

Hi,
I've got here a bricked galaxy s from a friend of my. he tried to root the galaxy s without knowing how.
But the problem is.. I don't know which firmware he had. So i don't know which .tar file i need for odin3 to restore.
Can i track somehow the firmware? its an europe version with 2.2 he said. Or is there an other way to restore this phone?
When i startup the phone it hangs at the galaxy s logo. I can enter download mode
Use Sammobile.com
You'll need to make a login first and then just follow the click to the files..
There are also stock packages in the general section such as cf-root, to gain root access. And there are other stock firmware threads there.
Try only flashing the code.tar file, I think that's where the kernal is but best to confirm that somewhere. Otherwise just flash the whole stock package.
i bricked my galaxy and i recomand a stock package and from that you can root and you can change to a custom rom if he wants that...

can you be more specific how to get the right firmware? Do i need to go to SAMFIT? or SAMSUNG LETTER CODE? i have no idea how to find it
Ok, sorry i thought Sammobile.com had complete instructions on how to find the firmware for you like it used to, but I haven't used it in a while..
I don't remember what all those codes mean and tbh it doesn't matter too much. The main thing is to find your CSC code. This will be the factor that would usually cause problems (actually annoyances) if incorrect, e.g. SMS messages not being received with the correct time and date.
Here, Ramad a very respected member of the community has made a collection of firmware generally with multi-CSC's. You can use these downloads or really any of the other downloads from sammobile (link to the Europe section). It doesn't matter much if he doesn't get the correct firmware because they are all available in Europe.
Find your CSC from Samfit samsung letter code. They are the 3-letter codes nearing the bottom. Press " Ctrl + F " and then type in your country. This will highlight your country on the page. Look to see if your carrier has a specific code, if it does then remember is and look at Ramad's list.
Go down to the 2.2 or 2.2.1 section and again " Ctrl + F " and type in the CSC. Look for the firmware that has it listed. Download that firmware and flash using the instructions at the top of Ramad's thread or using the pdf that you can download from sammobile. Generally the latest build date is best to download. But if you don't it doesn't matter because you will be using stock you can plug it into Kies and it will update it for you.
To check your CSC the long way (I cannot remember the short way ) type in *#272*(your imei)#
This will display your current imei and allow you to change it. Changing it to the one you want will factory reset your phone so be ready.
If i have left anything out or you have any more questions then let me know...
Hope all goes well

Oke. I really bricked the phone now i guess.
If i turn on power.. it doesnt do a thing. can't enter download mode either
i downloaded the right .tar file im almost sure. But when it was flashing.. The phone was constantly rebooting. so the usb connectiong diddnt stay on.
Not to worry. You probably haven't bricked it. The worst you will probably have to do is make a purchase of a USB jig which forces download mode...
Before that however there are multi tricks to try get it into DM. (Obviously make sure your battery is sufficiently charged.)
1. Hold down the combo and then put the battery in, whilst holding the combo. (You will probably need help)
2. Start Odin (make sure all kies apps are closed on the comp first) plug in phone. Hold down combo.
3. Same as number 2 without battery. If it doesn't work. Set up as 2 hold combo then battery in.
4. Same as 2 with charger instead of computer.
I think those are all the combinations but you can search for it. There used to be a thread on general listing all the ways you could be bricked and ways of getting out.
Anddddd if all that fails, then you can make or buy a USB jig. Search general if you want to buy it but also you can find links to buyers members have used.
And in the worst case none of that works.. you can set the unbrickkable mod which means you will loose warranty for ever and never get it back as it is a hardware modification. I'll give the link to that if and when you need it.
Good luck
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA
pfjew. it worked. can enter download mode!
But when i want to flash my proper firmware it asks for a pit file this time. But i don;t have a pit file at my firmware that i downloaded from sammobile. only a .tar file and a .dll

I9000XWJW1 ## 2.3.6 2012 January I9000XENJV5 Netherlands
I did a quick search because Sammobile is now super crap. Remember reading this..
[GUIDE] [INFO] The reality of PIT files
Having a quick scan of what it says, I believe it does not matter...But best to read to be sure.
Let us know if it works
it worked. flashed the firmware. rom doesnt work.. Boot loop.
Can enter Android system recovery now. But because that doent support my external sd, and i can't boot properly i can't flash a new rom?
I would like to flash CWM with external_sd support. searching for that one now
(i know how at my optimus 2x.. but everything is lots easier at optimus 2x compared to sgs)
Have you tried flashing it again?
Also have you tried flashing an older rom with a multi csc that includes your csc?
And finally [ODIN] DarkyROM 10.2 Resurrection GT-I9000, usually helps people stuck in your situation. Id try the first two though because it keeps stock.
last one worked. thanks A LOT!
Hi,
my SGS seems to be bricked. I have tried everything described in the posts before, but nothing worked.
Here is what I did:
I downloaded several roms (those mentioned in the previous posts and from other forums) and installed them via Odin3 (1.85). The Odin log says everything went fine:

The SGS reboots and stucks at the very first Samsung logo (the one without animation). When I hit the softkeys, the light goes on, but doesn't turn off again.
After each installation I didn't touch the phone for 20 minutes hoping that something happens - but nothing
Only 2 options are left:
- returning to the download mode
- removing the battery
Another strange issue: When I try to load the SGS, the displays turns on and shows the battery symbol, but it is not animated.
Has anyone an idea what else I can do?
Thank you for your help in advance!
@keinfilter:
from samfirmware.com the flash program for i9000 is 1.82 or 1.3 or 1.0
have you used the 512 pit file?
Well you say you have done all of the above...
1. You cant even boot with [ODIN] DarkyROM 10.2 Resurrection GT-I9000??
2. Wipe by going into recovery and doing all these wipes...
wipe date/factory reset + wipe cache + mount and storage>>>format system+cache+datadata+data (I dont wipe boot and you need sdcard)
After doing all the above wipes try Darky or stock with repartition checked...
3. I'm assuming that you used single tar files for flashing via odin, have you tried Odin flashes with 3 files?? If not either find a rom with 3 files or split one of the roms using the following guide by Ramad
Let us know if any of that works...
Good luck
Thanks for the very fast answers!

I tested all three version (1.82, 1.3, 1.0), each with 3 files roms and the 512 pit file. Nothing changed, still the samsung logo.

After trying the DarkyROM with his ODIN again, the DarkyROM logo (Galaxy S GT-I9000 powered by DarkCore & Darky's rom) is displayed instead of the samsung logo. But the boot process doesn't continue
DarkyROMs zip archive contains only the PDA.tar, what about the CHC and PHONE? Do I have to use these from other roms? I haven't tested it yet, because I don't want to make it worse.

I can't access the recovery mode. Tried it via holding Vol up + Home button + Power button until the Samsung logo was shown the 2nd time and then releasing all buttons, but nothing else than the samsung logo.

All the roms I tried consisted of 3 files but the DarkyROM.
Edit: Btw: I have no micro-sd or sim card inserted because I read in any forum it is better to remove them. I don't know if this makes any difference.
Has anyone further ideas? Any help would be appreciated!
Try to reflash in JVU STOCK with PiT512, MODEM, CSC, etc... with battery fully charged.
