i would like to be able to use regular headphones while on a voice call on my captivate. the idea is that i would hold the phone near my mouth and use the built in mic. this would give me better sound quality than the built in speaker. i've tried this, and i don't get any sound through the headphones on a call. the sound still comes out of the built in speaker. is there a way to make this work? i'm on a 2.2.1 (JPY) ROM, with speedmod kernel. thanks.

It works. But try to make sure the headset isn't a huge one that needs more power. I use the headsets sometimes when home and use the mic on phone.

And make sure you're using the latest speedmod k12Q.. You can even try xcaliburinhand's 2.3.1.. There's a variant just for hpcalls..

even when trying to record using videocam/voice recorder, no voice can be picked up. I have also tried using the headset that comes with it and there is still no sound detected. I not sure what breaks it, if anyone have any idea please help me
thank you.
the firmware i’m using
Cyanogen 4.1.11.1 (but the problem starts way back before this firmware)

This is a well know issue with any ROM running an I9000 kernel. If you need the wired headset functionality and quality Bluetooth then you must use a ROM with a kernel made for the Captivate...Try the COG versions, they are by far the best out there....
This is why I'm always confused when someone says i9000 roms don't have isssues... then you have someone that's new to the scene not realize they just gave up their earbug microphone lol

Thank you guys. Well, i'll try the cog version if i find any availible wifi hotspot in our campus. i can't download the cw recovery with my Gprs connection right now...
All of the 2.2 based ROMs don't have the headset functionality I'm looking for, and it appears it's a 2.2 issue.
Is anyone still working on 2.1 based ROM's?
Whether it's still under development or not, where can I find a couple of good simple bloatware free 2.1 based ROMs?
I tried searching the development forum, but there's so much about current ROMs (2.2 based) that I can't filter through them and find a 2.1 based ROM.
Thanks, alabamaroping
what headset functionality do you think is broken on all 2.2 roms? those issues have all been resolved unless you have some random new one
I'm looking to have the call output routed through a standard headset connection, NOT the headset that came with the phone that supports mic, and stereo audio out.
A standard headphone connection only has the audio out, no mic. (as I'm sure you know). I'll be listening to music in my truck, and a call will come in and i'll have to unjack the 3.5mm jack and grab the phone instead of the call just routing through the speakers.
I've tried the following: (Cognition 2.3b7, AXURA 2.4, eSPyeL's ROM Beta3.4.1). None of them work.

AS far as I know no one is still working on 2.1 roms anymore. To tell the truth from all the roms I have have seen the "issue" with the headset without a mic may not be a clitch. I will have to ask a few people that got the 2.2 official update to make sure but I think it was changed on purpose by google. (could be wrong though, will have to wait till I talk to some people)
The car dock allows call output to standard headphones, just got mine yesterday and it works. But, you know it's against the law almost everywhere to wear headphones and drive right?
Captivate Froyo / Perception Build 9 - Cog Kernel 4
Sent via XDA through the ether that is.
no headphones
Actually, I don't drive with headphones. I have a 3.5mm jack run into my truck stereo system. It's the same as a headphone jack, so I just use that as an example.
I've been using headphones to test functionality when sitting in my office, and the jack is the same, so I've been using the two interchangeably.
However, you are correct: it's unsafe to drive with headphones, but I see the iPeople doing it with their iPhones & iPods all the time.
The only 2.1 ROM out there still that should be available is Cognition. Lord knows though I haven't tried to download it... buyer beware.
Might just be easier to keep your "stock" 2.1 - Root it and get an application like Titanium Backup that will uninstall the bloat on your phone.
And.. I thought the issue for 2.2 custom ROMS were due to the use of i9000 modems/kernels? Or was that only Bluetooth?

Also, does the bluetooth issue still exist on the never versions? I haven't used my bluetooth earpiece in along time so I haven't bothered to try on these newer roms.
I have begun to start flashing my captivate and have noticed that (at least to what i believe) in froyo you can not use headphones to listen to call audio. I have flashed 2 stock eclair roms and they are working perfectly with this feature. However any eclair rom I try sound is only routed to the internal speakers. I have tried Perception, cognition and even JI6 stock. None will route call audio through the headphones.
If anyone could test it on their phones and report back that would be great. I am wondering if it a bug in captivate froyo roms, or if it is just because of froyo.
*Update*
Found this thread in the Vibrant Forums. Initially they say it is a problem with froyo. However there are a couple roms which do fix the problem. So there must be a way for our captivate too.
Any one have any luck testing this on their rom?
has a solution been found for this?
i cant use any audio out =(, having the same problem with it hooked up in my car
Look for roms that have:

You are correct sir. Anything 2.2 or newer (2.2.1) does not enable audio out through the headset (even with Xcal's headset fix) unless you are using a headset that has a microphone on it.
How does the phone know? If you look at your headset that came with the phone, it has 3 rings around the plug. Left audio, Right audio, and Mic. If the phone doesn't see that 3rd ring, then it will turn off audio out when a call comes in.
The fix will cost you about $20. You can get an adapter with 3 rings going into the phone, and a female spot for the audio you hook to your car.
If you already have a 3.5mm jack hard wired to your vehicle and/or want to use the cable you have, use this:
http://www.mobilecityonline.com/wireless/store/productdetail.asp?productid=26380 (what I got)
or this:
http://www.amazon.com/Monster-iSoni...RCTS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1295297829&sr=8-2
(what I wish I would have got)
If you have an AUX port on the front of your radio, and want another solution (new cable) buy this:
http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-GC170...PYKK/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1295297829&sr=8-4
Good luck.

Problem is.... $20 is too much atm. I am POOR with a capital PO'.... I couldn't afford to capitalize the or. Wonder if there would possibly be any way to work around this issue software-wise? My stereo aux cable worked great in Eclair. Problem is, I don't get al the speed and shiny of Froyo with Eclair. At least I know what the issue is now...

Pretty much nailed it. Once the kernel receives the interrupt that something has been plugged in, it checks the resistance between ring 3 and 4 (microphone and ground). If it is low, the kernel recognizes that it is either a normal pair of earphones or a line out (since ring 3 and 4 are the same on a normal 3 ring connector).
Gothpunk4christ reached out to me for a solution that doesn't require additional hardware (still want's to use the microphone on the handset). Shouldn't be too difficult to build a custom kernel that treats headphones/line out as a wired headset. The kicker is making sure the kernel doesn't disable the handset microphone.

This is majorly irritating--I use my captivate as an mp3player all the time and it's a pain in the ass to take out my headphones every time a call comes through.

I can confirm that this kernel does fix the call audio issue. Everything gets routed through the headphones, which is a nice sigh of relief. Thanks for all of your input everyone!
EDIT: I am pretty sure cognition 3.04 has this functionality built in to it.

As does D1ll1gaf's newer stuff.
Let me tell you about my quest regarding this subject:
I first tried using a Motorokr t505 bluetooth device that featured a FM transmitter, but the audio quality was absolutely horrible thru the car radio (too much static regardless which station you tried), not to mention the clumsy way you had to switch back and forth from phone mode to music player via the FM transmitter, coupled with the fact the stupid device was always giving you a new FM station to tune into - it just simply was way too much of a hassle plus more of a safety hazard trying to get the motorokr device to work and in the correct mode while driving. There had to be a better, more simply way to enjoy the feature of using your cell phone for conversations thru your car radio.
I've been using a cheap $15 FM transmitter (http://www.amazon.com/Coby-CA-745-W...F6G0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298180340&sr=8-1) I got a while back from Amazon and the mp3 music quality from my Samsung Captivate was great thru to my car stereo - I mean no static what-so-ever. The problem was, I couldn't use the phone thru the care stereo. So I rooted my phone, and now a whole new world opened up.
I up my Firmware to 2.2.1 (froyo) via superoneclick, change to a custom ROM ParagonRCS (see http://alchemistar.blogspot.com/2010/11/samsung-captivate-custom-rom-list-1110.html ), and I took advantage of the speedmod kernal (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893880 ).
Now my Samsung Captivate, when connected to my cheap FM transmitter, can send and receive calls thru my car stereo. I also use a free app called ChoiceDialer. So now all I have to do is invoke ChoiceDialer (the only time I have to touch the phone while driving), say who I want to call, and voila - my call goes thru the car radio. Also, when my mp3 music is playing thru the radio via my Captivate, and a call comes in (which I have it setup on my phone to auto answer after 2 seconds), the music pauses and I just start talking - excellent!!!
The only slightly down side is when I'm NOT listening to my mp3 player and thus tuned into another FM station, when a call does comes in, I have to select on my stereo the pre-set button that's set to the station my FM transmitter is set to, but not a big deal - I certainly can live with that!
Sorry for the long-winded response, but you don't know (or maybe you do) how frustrating it was trying to get information on this subject. I thought bluetooth was the answer, but quite frankly, my 1st and only experince with bluetooth sucked.
The end!
Nettalk seems to partially work on the Gtab. I just side loaded it onto my xoom and it works perfectly however on the gtab it hangs up after a while. Just seeing if the community knows of a fix maybe even as easy as a external mic?
Here is the apk you can download from the market for free!!
There is a microphone though..

I can make calls but they end after 30 secs for some reason and the person on the other end cant hear me? I was wondering if it was a mic issue not hearing anything so it shuts off the call of a programing issue since the xoom has 3G capabilities but the website says it can make calls over wifi?

no microphone??!! I use my Gtab skype with my gf everyday... hmm, guess she really can't hear me in the other end, and she's just pretending that she knows what i'm saying... because there's no microphone...
Yes, the gtab does have a microphone.
Now what might be happening here is what happened to me using Skype. For whatever reason, when placing a Skype phone call, the microphone is on mute. Hitting the little button on the bottom left enabled the mic. Calls then went smoothly.
I have to re - enable the mic for each call. A small inconvenience really
OK good grief LOL i just got my gtab so I am not that familiar with it and was thinking out loud about it not having a mic LOL has anyone side loaded this apk like i did and used it? I hit the mute button and it does nothing?
Edit--- Ok the problem may be my router. I have a Belkin and it is listed as one of the bad ones that only enables one way voip calling going to try tethering.
Maybe a dumb question, but did you try using speaker phone? BTW, which rom are you running?
It works for me. Must hit speaker phone. This is really cool. Calukins and Pershoots overclock kernal.

To test it I called 1800555TELL and on the speaker it was getting confused pretty easily. But with a headset plugged in it seemed to be fine. I expect my bluetooth would have been even better but didn't try it. My quick testing on other things tells me the headset jack has no mic in or it isn't switched on. Its just headphones.

Yes TELL ME is voice response. So I said "News desk" and it went to the news. Then I said "Top stories" and it read me the top stories. You could probably try bing411 if you'd rather.
yup works perfectly. because the mic is close to the speakers the mic can pic up sound from the speakers and give it the eco effect. when i use it with headphones it works perfectly.
