[Q] how do i manually update? - Nook Color General

Hey guys I got a NC the other day and I want to root it, but I'm on version 1.0.0. I know 1.1.0 just came out but I know I cant root that yet so my question is, how can I manually update to 1.0.1? does someone have the files necessary for that? I know B&N did but now there site just shows 1.1.0.
Help?

Yes. Go to barnesandnoble.com and under Nookcolor support, select the link "Make sure your NookColor is up-to-date". It has the instructions.
I can't post the link. I'm too new to post external links.

DON'T DO THIS!
You want to download the old update. You can get it from here:
http://images.barnesandnoble.com/presources/download/nookcolor/v1.0.1/Sideload_update.zip
And then do this:
> Plug in NC to your computer
> Copy the zip file downloaded to your NC (top layer not in a folder)
> Reboot the NC or wait for it to find the Update
> It will reboot and install the update
If you are worried about updating to the 1.1 I would be sure to turn off WiFi and then research turning off the OTA updates.

Want to try to avoid 1.3.0 OTA? Modify build prop?

Hey everyone, I'll up front say I'm more a user than a tweaker, so right now my NC (and my wifes) work awesome. I am currently on CM7, but my wife and many folks need to use the stock ROM and until a clean way to update with autonoot and such comes out, hopefully this is useful.
Clockwork Mod won't install an OTA, but I have a feeling that it'll still download it and try to install it, and I'm afraid it will try to install it over and over as long as the file is there. So moving to CWM to avoid the OTA is out.
Renaming otacerts doesn't work, lots of accounts of that.
But in my experience, OTAs always compare the build prop to see if they need to OTA, so what I'm going to do to my NC and my wifes NC is modify the build prop to the new settings and see if that avoids the OTA.
BTW, I know Nookie Froyo, CM7 etc won't OTA, etc, so now that's out of the way....
Due to multiple reports that using Root Explorer has somehow screwed up the system requiring users to manually re-copy their old build.prop back, I suggest you DO NOT use Root Explorer to do this.
First thing is look in /media for the uploader, in case it's already downloaded. Delete it if it's there! If you're paranoid, check when you're done with the following too, just in case it snuck in while you were editing
Get the new build.prop from here:
If you're still on Eclair: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/334233/build.prop-1.3.0-eclair
If you're on Froyo: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/334233/build.prop-1.3.0-froyo
Remount the system r/w
Code:
adb shell
su
busybox mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /system
Push the new build.prop to your system
Code:
adb push build.prop-1.3.0-[COLOR="Red"]YOURBUILD[/COLOR] /system/build.prop
Note you need to replace YOURBUILD with the appropriate build, Froyo or Eclair, or whatever you named the build.prop..
Now your NC should have thew new build.prop, so now reboot. When you reboot, you should get a pop-up message with a green N saying you've updated to 1.3, but you should not see any update progress dialogs or any indication there was an actual update. Hopefully this makes it not try to OTA to 1.3.0! Please report back! It worked for 1.0.1 with the 1.1.0, as well as the 1.2.0 update out there, and it should work for 1.3.0.
Below is for old 1.2.0 information, don't use this unless you're sure you need to!
Get the new build.prop from here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/334233/build.prop-1.2.0
Remount the system r/w
Code:
adb shell
su
busybox mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /system
Push the new build.prop to your system
Code:
adb push build.prop-1.2.0 /system/build.prop
Once I get a little feedback on this, I'm going to move it to the NookDevs wiki, just don't want to put nonsense there if that's what it is I've done this to both my NC and my wifes, no problem so far, and hopefully it avoids the OTA.
done - we'll see what happens next ....
newbie
Hello
I am a newbie at all of this and used the autonooter with 1.01. That's about as deep as i planned going with the nook, enough to read, play some games and surf the web. So my question is for someone like me that really may not have the skill as most of you, what would be the easiest way to prevent an ota update that will unroot my nook? Thanks for any advise

I'll keep revising the instructions in the first post, but that's so far the only theory that hasn't failed yet... So get adb to work and follow the instructions. You can do it over Wifi, so even if USB isn't working out for you due to your OS, the Wifi ADB widget on the Market will work.
How to use ADB itself, you can google.. It's fairly straightforward. Basically you'll just need to adb connect ip : port once you know it, the Wifi ADB widget tells you when it sets up.
FYI, I just did all of this from Root Explorer on the device. I snagged yer file from your dl.dropbox link, copy it over via root explorer, and set the rights. When I restarted, the little green n told me I had recently updated.
Maybe we can bypass optional future updates by changing our version to something really high like 1.99?
Yes I know I never say anything on here but will now. I have used something like this on before I I do think this will work just fine as the Nook already things it's updated so when it checks it's going to see that it is already updated.
Now as to what BN will do in a week or so who knows. We just need some more support for roms and so on for the nook and we will be good to go.
ClockworkMod has no bearing on the OTA; it's not the recovery that attempts to download and install OTAs.
Used your download link to install it. Says I updated to 1.1.0. Thanks

Um, yeah... Let me explain further I guess?
B&N Components decide it needs an update, downloads it
B&N components see the update is downloaded, sets up the OTA update, reboots
Clockwork Recovery does NOT update
System boots
Repeat step 2 - 5 forever?
That's what I meant by "Clockwork won't install an OTA" and such.

Check your software version? Pretty sure it wouldn't show any updates, mine nor my wifes did. I think you probably already got the OTA.

Copied the new build and rebooted. I received a upgrade notice in the notification bar that said I upgraded to 1.1. I checked the new software version for the nook and it also says 1.1. I know I have not gotten anything ota because I have watched all afternoon. Thanks for this. Only time will tell when the real update hits my nook.

I just checked the about settings and it also says 1.1.0 . If im on 1.1.0 I don't really mind since my device is still rooted and works identically to how it did a day ago. I'm guessing it pulls the about settings pulls the data from the build.prop every reboot
Maybe in the doctored file we should update the build to something like 1.1.5 so we have something in "device info" that says the device is build 1.1.5 instead of 1.1.0 which would denote the OTA... that way, if somehow the OTA does install it will change to 1.1.0 and we'll have evidence in the setting menu (unfortunately, of failure of the method).

Good thought. Do you want to flip a coin or draw straws?
As soon as I saw the thread about the 1.1.0 update today, I turned my WiFi off. There was no zip file in my /media folder or on root when I made the changes to the build.prop file. When I rebooted, I received a notice in the bar that my Nook Color software had been updated. WiFi is still off, but I am going to turn it back on and see what happens.
i also updated file lines thru root explorer and gave me massage that i had been updated. crossing fingers

[Q] CM7 and Nook App

I am having a problem with the Nook app on CM7 (using the 4th nightly and the OC kernel.)
Doing some quick searching and extensive looking hasn't yielded any results directly related to the following issue.
When looking in my library, if I try to download a book it just says "No such file or directory" and my other books that are on my SD card don't show up/can't open them with the app (No Application Found).
So, just wondering if anyone else has got this working, I would really like to use this as an e-reader.
Thanks
Ran into the same problem last night

Tried that solution and it doesnt work when trying to download books. I always get file type not supported. You?
yes, it does work when downloading books. make sure you follow it exactly.
you have to set the EXTERNAL_STORAGE value to /sdcard like it says and NOT /mnt/sdcard

I did change that but I didnt notice that I had to type out adb shell before typing su for the apk. I get permission denied, does that mean I missed something while rooting my nook?
Edit:
NM adb shell works, just didnt work from terminal emulator. Anyways tried everything from adb and a computer and still no dice. I have no clue why this is not working. The books in my files dont have the cover and when I click on it it looks like it will load then just goes back to my files again.
NM, it seems that the books that were already in my library from when I had the regular nook OS was giving me issues. I went to shop for a new free book to see what happened and it downloaded and worked. So I did it right from the beginning but kept trying the same 2 stupid books. lol Thanks
I'm not sure what's going on here.
I tried following through with the directions posted in the link. But my adb shell seems to be repeating whatever I type after I press enter. It doesn't seem to be working.
Is there something I'm doing wrong?
I'm using phiremod.
Okay, so I found something... I think.
I did export EXTERNAL_STORAGE /sdcard
and I got
export: /sdcard: bad variable name
Any suggestions?
WORKING Nook ereader app on Nook Color running CM7 from sd card
I wanted to be able to have access to 2 barnes and noble libraries on the same device. I looked around and this is what I came up with. You don't need to do any really tricky or invasive mods and it works great. I'm mostly a moron so I wrote this for people who are like me, please don't be offended if you have to say "well duh" alot.
I would read the notes at the bottom of the post after you read this.
1. I prepared a CM7 sd card with google apps!!! using this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
***(I used the stable CM-7.1.0-RC-1-encore-signed version + current gapps, but it should work with any current CM7 nightly)
2. I powered down my nook completely, inserted the CM7 sd card, powered it back up, and let the CM7 installer routine run. The installer shuts the nook off when complete, then I rebooted into CM7. After registering to my google acct and getting to the home screen, I clicked on the icon in the bottom left corner (3 little horizontal lines) and selected Settings>Applications>Unknown sources...check that box.
3. Opened the Market app. Searched for "appinstaller" and installed AppInstaller by FunTrigger. Then I completely powered down my nook and removed the CM7 sd card.
4. Then I downloaded an older version of the Nook ereader app (ver 2.5) and put it somewhere in my filesystem that was easy to locate (you will be locating it from linux) from here:
http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/app/nook
5. Then on a PC running Linux (ubuntu 11), I plugged the sd card I put CM7 on into my computer. In linux you can see all the partitions...in windows all you can see is boot. I opened the "CM7 SD CARD" partition, and I put the nook.apk file I downloaded from freewarelovers right in there.
6. I reinserted the CM7 sd card into my nook and booted it back up. I went to applications, ran AppInstaller and clicked on the "nook.apk" icon and installed it. Registered my B&N account normally and populated my library.
Notes:
* DO NOT add the nook.apk into the native OS. This is only for CM7. If you try to add this app to an OS with the native nook reader working (unrooted/nootered) the device gets stuck in a boot loop which you will have to use CWM or 8 fail boots to recover from.
* I bear no responsibility for any damage you may do to your device by using this method. That said, it is almost impossible to brick a nook color, especially using a sideload OS. If you think you did just look around the forums, there is lots of information on how to unbrick a nook color.
* If you do not have Linux running on anything to read the CM7 partitions, you can google "reading ext4 filesystems in Windows" and figure out how to do that. Mac is Unix based, so maybe you could use a mac and just hope no one finds out. I highly suggest you just make a live CD by following the directions here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
* Incidentally, you can use this method for sideloading any apps into your sd-based CM7 environment.
Why would you need to sideload the Nook app? Is it hiding in the market these days??
No it's there but you can't download it. Either says invalid device or it won't give you the option to install at all.
EDIT: I updated to a current nightly and it allowed me to download the ver 2.6 Nook reader, but the sign in screen is garbled and it won't communicate with the B&N servers. Had a similar issue with Netflix, which I also sideloaded an older version of and works well.
@ mastigia.
Firstly, very appreciate your effort and post instructions for others.
Secondly, why would you want to go with that route?
At least, there are 2 options installing Nook App with ease.
a. Download and install directly from Market. (see note 1)
b. If for sideloading, just use usb cable to tranfer the .apk over, no need to remove the uSD then insert into Linux just to copy the file.
Note 1: If you can't see Nook App on the Market, then fix your Market first.
Note 2: another option (would be 3rd) is using ADB (either over USB or wireless to push file over)
why oh why

Ok...
a. I CAN see the app on the market. The app currently available is ver 2.7 which from the previous build of CM7 I was using had "Incompatible Device" where the "Install" button would normally be. So, I updated to CM7 nightly 209 thinking I was an idiot. And hey, whaddya know, that made it possible for me to install the 2.7 reader from the market. But it was garbled and would not communicate with the B&N servers and caused me some really crappy synching issues later which I won't go into here.
b. This is just for getting the nook.apk onto CM7 loaded on an sd card. The prob with just moving the file over usb is that windows (which I started off using) will only pick up my native emmc because the sd card partition I want to move the .apk to is in an ext4 partition. Using adb wireless I was unable to find the mount point, once again probably for the same reason.
So, to clean that up I would say just plug your nook into linux and move the file over usb and that would probably work and thanks for the suggestion, I just did not think of that.
Ya know this is kind of a silly and unique issue. I got my gf a nook color, she wants her own library and an unrooted nook (warranty). She also wants access to MY library (which has alot of books she would like to read) and apps like netflix (which also requires a legacy version). Books are the primary reason we got nooks. So for someone like ME, thats the post I would need.
Anybody having force close issues with the latest Nook app? I'm running 213 and I can download but anytime I try to open anything I get a force close.

New to the scene

hi guys, so as the title states, i'm new to the droid scene and i have a streak 7. i have been reading for a few days now and want to root my streak. i am unsure about how to do this, i have seen gingerbreak and superoneclick. based on the fact that i dont know crap, which would you guys recommend? i have some other issues that concern me. maybe some of those fixed would be a good start?
issues:
1. i cant seem to connect my streak to my pc, running windows vista
2. i have no idea what all these acronyms mean?
3. i dont know what ROM to use, hell i dont know what a good ROM is
4. i cant connect my streak and my iphone via wifi
maybe some one can pint me to a basic, newb users guide would be good also. if some one is willing to help me, i'd appreciate it! sorry if this is the wrong spot
hello and welcome
1) did you install the dell drivers?
2) which acronyms are you referring to?
3) rom flavor depends on your needs... streakdroid is awesome but has bluetooth issues...on the flip side......is is overclockable. Im using custom 2.2 ...I need bluetooth sadly and can't sacrifice it for an overclockable kernel.
4)you need to modify the wpa supplicant file in order to tether via adhoc ( device to device )
Steps on how are in the forum.im typing via my ds7 ....otherwise id look it up for you. Its easy to find though.
Hope that helps!!!

Thanks for your reply. Here is what I found:
1. The drivers I found won't work with vista but I was directed to another method I hope works
2. All the "apk, rom, wpa" stuff like that. I mean I figured out a rom is what you use as a front end of sorts
3. I don't need overclocking, don't need speed at all as it's just going in my truck as an audio source, gps, video player, Internet thing.
4. I'll use your post to search this method out. Might need some help. I'm assuming I need to have the devise rooted first?
On a rooting note, what's the best, easiest method for a newb such as myself? I am on 2.2.2 and it's a t-mobile streak 7.
Again thanks for your help.
With 2.2.2 use gingerbreak. Its one button and your rooted.

ok so i rooted my streak 7 tonight. wasnt so bad i used gingerbreak.
now i need to modify the supplicant file in order to tether my iphone to my streak via wifi. i found all the info and the files, but i dont know how to "flash the zip in recovery" i read through some 16 pages and still cant figure it out. can any one point me to a step by step on how to apply the patch? or just write it out step by step? i am getting the hang of this stuff but i dont know enough and dont want to mess up my streak and not be able to use it all via wifi.
thank you again guys, you are a big help to a newb
ok i think i figured out how to do it:
1: changed zip file name to update.zip
2. moved to sd card
3. opened up clockwork recovery
4. ran rom up date of said zip file
5. asked to make back up
6. rebooted in recovery mode
7. dont know if it worked??

You don't need to do any of that....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970219
You are rooted. All you have to do is use any file explorer which allows writing to root and copy this file to /system/ bin (back up your old one by renaming it to wpa_supplicant.old first. Restart wifi by going into settings and uncheck / recheck the box. You can now tether
The file is a zip. Extract the wpa_supplicant file from it and copy......not the whole zip itself...just the extracted file

Wow and I thought about copying the files. But I kept reading about "running" a patch, so I thought I had to let the script do something. Thank you very much for your link! I will try it hopefully tonight when I get home from working.
ok i am trying what you posted pyraxiate, but i cant seems to rename the files? i have tried both es file explorer and android file explorer.
ok i dont think my root went through. i re-read that the gingerbreak has to be on the devise and i had it on the sd card. problem is i cant get the gingerbreak apk to the eternal memory of the devise. my computer is only 32 bit and the adb files wont work on 32 bit, only 64 bit. so it seems i am stuck until i find a computer with an OS other than vista! damn it, unless some one has solution guess i am stuck unrooted for now
Do yourself a favor and use the super1click via tether to a laptop. Its easy. Install the drivers they give. Also I bought root explorer. Well worth it!
Also you can use the xp32 bit driver. It worked for me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939921
That's how I did mine
If you have the gingerbreak.apk on the SD card use a file manager and install it. Then open in in the app drawer and click root. The device will reboot if it worked. Might take a few minutes and look like it froze.

Thing is I emailed it to myself and it still saved it to the sd card part, even though I removed my sd card?? I did the gingerbreak and it did reboot, I also did the clockwork recovery. I still don't know if it worked? Seems as though I try and rename the wpa files and I'm not allowed, does this mean that it isn't rooted?

I still don't know if it worked? Seems as though I try and rename the wpa files and I'm not allowed, does this mean that it isn't rooted?

I know es file explorer wont work for root. You need a root file explorer. Also, it would be a good idea to download a rom ( either streakdroid or custom 2.2.2), put it on the internal storage, and try booting into cwr to flash it. You boot cwr by powering the streak off first. Hold volume up in and push / hold power. You will get a recovery boot menu. From there choose update from zip ( this is where cwr is) and cwr should boot. From there follow guides to wipe data / cache / delvik and then go to install a file from zip. Choose the rom zip ...sit back...and relax as it flashes to a fully rooted rom
Hope that helps!!

[Q] Can't Restore Software Update 1.0

I am very new to the forum and to rooting in general, so please forgive my ignorance...
I have a rooted revo running stock rom zv7 and in order to stop the zv8 updates, I uninstalled software update 1.0 using titanium backup. In retrospect I should have frozen...I am unable to restore the app and would like to in order to try updating with the new All-in-one package...
I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks!
You'd have to use LGNPST to re-install the ZV7 rom or just install the ZV8 whichever you want to do. But if you want to maintain root in ZV8 install ZV7.
Thanks.
I have downloaded the software, but I am still confused by the instructions. Is there a basic guide or should I just muddle through? I think I may be beyond my abilities here...
Here, try following these instructions.
Install the software that pops up when you plug in your phone.
Get the LGNPST Package with the GenericModels and Components Plug-In:
LGNSPT
Get the driver for the phone and install it:
Get the Stock Rom TOT file and extract it.
Get the DLL file specifically for the Revolution:
Extract the "LGNPST Store & Lab"
Install the following order:
LGNPSTv1.2_Store_Version.msi
LGNPST_v1.2_Lab_Version.msi
Components >> LGNPST_Components_Ver_5_0_12_0.msi
GenericModels >> LGNPST_GenericModels_Ver_5_0_10_0.msi
Run "Right_Click_Register_DLL.reg"
Make a new folder called "Models" in the program's directory
Default: "C:\LG Electronics\LGNPST\"
Grab the "VS910.dll" and put it in the "Models" folder.
Right Click "VS910.dll" and click on Install/Register.
Note: DLL WILL NOT INSTALL UNLESS COMPONENTS AND GENERICMODELS PLUG-INS ARE INSTALLED!!!
IF YOU CANNOT INSTALL IT ON A RIGHT CLICK GO TO "C:\Windows\System32" and drag the VS910.dll on "regsvr32" and it should install.
Make sure you install it properly
REBOOT!!
Run "LGNPST"
Plug in your phone, use Internet Connection Mode, and enable USB Debugging.
Phone should pop up in the list
Select the phone and click on the Open folder button inside the .BIN query underneath the COM## details.
Since it wants a .bin file, you can open the .TOT file by typing "*.*" inside the File Name query and hitting Enter
Select the TOT file for your stock ROM and Click OK
Then click on Upgrade
Wait a few minutes
Voila
I'm currently following these steps atm since I'm reverting back to stock ZV7 then updating to ZV8
Thanks again. These are the instructions that I found earlier. I guess that's about as simple as it can get. I'll give it a try and see what happens...

If you have Windows 7 64-Bit you'll most likely end up in a problem like I just did where it won't register which there's a fix in General.
I was able to successfully recover the stock and update zv8. I haven't been able to root yet, but I found the forum that covers this. Thanks so much for your help; the instructions were much easier to follow with the downloads/software in front of me.
Thanks again!

Problems getting OTA ICS on Rooted Droid 4

I've looked and I couldn't find a direct solution, so I'm going to give birth to this thread.
Problem: I want (and have problems downloading) the OTA Ice Cream Sandwich update on my rooted Verizon Motorola Droid 4
I rooted my phone awhile back. Just today I received a message that the system update was available.
-I am able to download the update.
-I am able to begin installing the update.
-During the installation process, the yellow progress indication bar fills about 1/8 of the way, then I get the ! warning sign above the little android figure.
Here's what I've done so far to try and correct this problem:
-Restarted my phone
-Restarted my computer
-Downloaded and installed the latest Motorola drivers from the official Motorola website.
-I attempted* to un-root my phone using the Droid 4 Utility 0.4.
--I should note that in the log, there was a like that read:
rm failed for /data/app/com.noshufou.android.su-1.apk, No such file or directory

-Restarted my phone again
-Tried installing the update with still no luck
*It appears that all the Droid 4 Utility did was remove Superuser, though I could be wrong. However, if this is the case, I still have a rooted device.
Once again, I'd prefer to have the OTA update, and not a leaked/rooted version of ICS. There's a possibility I didn't unroot my phone all the way. Am I doing this right?
Thanks in advance for the help.
ICS hasn't been officially released for the D4 yet.
This morning when I woke up I received an "Update available" notification. I am able to download an update for my phone. After downloading the update, I receive another notification:
"Install update
Update (6.13.219.en.US) has been downloaded and is ready to install.
Installation will take up to 10 minutes. Upon completion the phone will power off than back on.."
So it absolutely did not occur to you that this is the "219" update which can be found in this (General) section as well as in the Android development section .
Please do take a look in the topics mentioning "update" or "219". You will find topics for rooted and stock phones regarding the 219 update and how to proceed.

Thanks for your help. I'm slightly inexperienced. I was so excited when I saw the system update that I suspected it to be ICS. Albeit, my hunt continues.
it failed because u altered system files of some kind... its happening to me too. i downloaded the stock system app zip from here in hopes to replace the system apk's so the update will go through but i dont know how to replace the system files... is it as simple as copy and paste, do u have to copy it to the sd card then use a file explorer to copy and overwrite over the files? i dont want to mess something up
I did modify the build file in root/system in order to install a certain APP from the Google Play Store, but I made sure I went and reversed all of the changes I made. Could you please post where you got this file from?

but how do u copy those files from NOTE 2? i downloaded the file, extracted the files but i cant copy them to the system folder
copy them to your phone via usb, make sure you are rooted, and CAREFULLY COPY them using a root explorer. You can get a good one from AntTek for free on the Play Store.
I tried that.. copied the files to the sd card. I can see them when i browse the sd card via the computer but when i unplug the cord they arent there anymore. Would replacing the stock boot animation via rom manager have anything to do with the fail?
Sent from my DROID4 using XDA
remember that the "sd card" the computer sees is the phone's internal storage. your actual sd card, as the computer sees it, is referred to by the phone as "sd-ext" or "external sd card" usually.
I did the samething, I changed two files and got help from this forum to get the originals. I use es file explorer in root and copied the files to where they need to be. I checked the permissions and rebulit the checksum for each file. After that I used voodoo to save my root. I rebooted instal from sdcard and it worked. hope this helps.
well it wasnt an app that i deleted.. i was reading somewhere about the build.prop file being messed up from using rom manager so i downloaded a new copy and pasted it over the old one and the update went through! thanks everyone!

I tried doing this, but it didn't work. Could you post the build.prop file that you used?
EDIT:
I was copying my build.prop file incorrectly. More details here.
