[Q] Stylus Pen

Has anyone tried a stylus pen on the SGT? Was thinking about getting the DAGi stylus for my tab but before I did I wanted to know if anyone had any advice to give based on past experiences.

Boxwave!
I picked up a black Boxwave IPad 'Styra' (pen one end and stylus the other). I find it very accurate. Also tried a Pogo but found it pretty poor (too squishy and kind of fuzzy tip). If you search forvreviews youwill find heaps. All I need now is a decent handwriting recognition app. Tried several in the market and not impressed.

Get the red dot pen by HTC. That's what I recommend, anyway. It's extremely precise. Just search google for "red dot stylus htc".

Anyone knows whether there is any palm rejection supported software out there for note taking on the tab? been seeing that the hardware supports it, but i dont think there is any good software to utilize it yet..

What like how the htc flyer notes app works? That uses specilist hardware so it wont work on the tab

The screen for GT is supplied by Atmel and through web there was an interview with Atmel's product marketing Binay Bajaj saying
"There's something called "palm rejection." We support that. And unintended touches, which you can reject. We call it "grip," touching the screen from the side. We have something called "grip suppression." In spite of the grip, you can still use the device."
So I was hoping that the hardware for GT already supports it, but there is no software out in the market utilizing this feature yet.. unless I missed it. And yes, flyer's digitizer is supplied by n-trig and thats a different matter.

so the palm rejection isn't just automatic on the tab at all times? it has to be supported in specific apps?
that woudl suck if that's true. I figured it was just like that all the time.
either way we need some useful handwriting or other custom writing (jot?) style apps for the tab/android. otherwise a stylus is sort of an inconvenient gimmick, isn't it?

is it all the same type of stylus head in the market? from the after market product of stylus? i tried once but it feels of lag of motion, this an eraser head type (flat on the surface)

I got the "just mobile AluPen". Rounded eraser head type, but glides very easily. I got it for highlighting in PDFs.
Works quite ok. But not as well as my finger!
When you use it for Swype, the trace on the letters looks okay, but the recognition is way worse than with the finger. And you have to press a bit to get a good trace.
Stopped using it.

I got targus tablet stylus pen for 11€ including shipping.
It works okay, but its not as useful as I thought, finger is still working better, one has to press to hard and capacititve styluses aren't accurate enough.

Fingers are better...

sure they are, but even used a phone in -10°C?
Finger becomes useless when wet in rain or due to sweat hence we need a stylus as a backup in those extreme conditions.

Capacitive screens are rubbish at low temps, question: do styluses work with gloves on or do they need direct contact with the skin as a current path?

If you have capacitive stylus then they work with gloves you don't need direct skin contact.
Pogo stylus pen are the best for this purpose.

Any fine tip stylus'?

I visited my local dollar store earlier and found a cheap stylus for 2 dollars. It works well but the only thing I don't like is the rounded tip. I'm looking for more of a shape of a pen with a pointy tip. Preferably really cheap for a dollar or so from ebay or any online retailer that ships to Canada. Any ideas?

Bumping for interest. I've had bad luck with rounded ones on my old TF101. I've love something with a fine point.

It's not a real graphics tablet (the kind photoshop users have). Capacitive screens just aren't that accurate. You have the same issue w/ the ipad screen.
If you want something w/ the accuracy of the Galaxy Note, get the Note. It uses Wacom technology which actually is accurate...

Saw that, but meh the fragile disc and the price is a turn off. I guess I'll just stick with my cheapo stylus for the time being. It does my sort of writing well enough anyway.

The problem is the screen tech. Because of the way they work, it requires a larger point of contact. They aren't real precise for writing or drawing. This is all cap screens including iDevices.
The Note and Flyer uses a combination of screen techs and pen tech. The pen has sensors that detects pressures and communicates to the device (I guess). That or there is there an additional screen layer that has pressure sensors.
Old school resistive screens are much more accurate.

I have the Adjonit Pro and love it. Works great even with the screen protector and am getting better at Draw Something with it LOL

I've been on the search for a fine tipped stylus & haven't found anything that works consistently. I just use the cheap-o stylus from Amazon.

I got the Estylo in this morning's mail. I like it a lot. Tested it with Autosketch Sketchbook Pro, Fresco Pro, and Lecture Notes. It produces slightly cleaner (slightly more legible) handwriting strokes than the Kuel H12 stylus. I also notice that it both glides more smoothly, but with a very firm feel (the tip material has almost no give to it in comparison with a rubber or silicone tip.) To be fair, you still can't use a tiny, tiny point to draw with - you have to angle the tip to get more of it in contact with the surface. BUT, you can easily see where you are drawing/writing.
Now if there was a clip on it, so I could keep in in my pocket without fear of losing it, it would be ideal. BTW, it's extremely light weight (4 grams.)

So, I am a long time Galaxy Note user. Someone who has become dependent on the S Pen. I have also become dependent on a removable battery...
I use my S Pen all day practically every day for work and I work in a low signal area. The Galaxy Note was definitely the phone for me until Samsung decided to pull the plug on removable batteries.
I have been very interested in LG's new G5 (hey, it has a removable battery!) but I am having a lot of trouble finding a fine point stylus, similar to the S Pen, that will work with the G5's capacitive screen.

I have not yet tried this but have high hopes.

There is no SPen replacement. I have a Note 5. The Note Line has a special pen digitizer layer that allows the use of a fine stylus.
There are several fine point regular pens, but none really compare.
I've never used one of these but it's probably your best bet.

Stylus suggestions

I have been looking for a stylus for this device. However I can't decide on a stylus to purchase. I have read the verge review for the stylus for Ipads. However i was wondering if anyone could give some insight as to the stylus you use. It would be much appreciated.

at the end i realized that the cheap dollar one is good enough for my use
i also got a smith and Wesson tactical stylus that you can technically use it for self defense (i was able to pop a basketball with the stylus)

I've been using the targus stylus from Wal-Mart feels nice in the hand and has the width of a nice feeling pen , I'll upload a picture cost around $13 but they go on sale from time to time.

I'm using the Applydea Maglus, very very nice feel and a great tip but still a bit heavy in use, it replaced the Kensington Virtuoso Touch I got first that didn't live up to expectations.

It's not the cheapest stylus available, but it uses a mesh for the tip instead of rubber and that makes it glide really smoothly along the screen. Plus I liked that it was pen-sized and had multiple colors to choose from. There are better styluses out there, but they tend to cost a lot more. I thought this was a good middle of the road option. So far it's held up well, and I got it right after the first batches of Nexus 7's started to ship and use it every day.

I'm using the Boxwave stylus as well. It feels like the tip is softer than a traditional, cheap capacitive stylus. I hardly use a stylus because of the lack of precision.
I have thought about finding a way to "firm" up the stylus tip, but I'm concerned about the input detection "skipping" with a smaller contact area.

I was really looking into the Maglus, however, my main question was if the magnetization worked on the Nexus7. I would assume it doesn't. That was a concern for me before ordering it.
I will look into the others mentioned in this thread.

The magnet on the stylus is very strong but there's nowhee on the nexus for it to attach, luckily my case has a metal closure that the styus clamps onto perfectly.

The tip of mine started out pretty firm but has softened over time (after playing a ton of beat-the-bajeesus out of the screen tapping games.) It doesn't really affect how I use it though, I can still press buttons without having to tap with a lot of pressure or anything like that. If you're looking for a smaller contact area than the BoxWave probably definitely isn't the best. I don't know of any cheap small contact styluses though, only the expensive Jot line. I think the Wacom Bamboo had a smaller tip and wasn't crazy expensive, but I've never used it so I don't know how good it is. Hopefully better than the BoxWave since it costs more.

I like it so far, it works great with my N7 and makes Swype a lot easier. The only issue that I have is the length of the stylus. I think, at under $4.00 its a great buy though.

I've got the jot and jot pro... they both suck... hit or miss all the time... totally bummed with these

Just got the Jot and found it to be the opposite... Spot on! Mind you i did try several different note taking apps before settling on Writepad which seems to work well with the Jot

I am waiting for my device but I want to buy samo accessories for it. This is my first capacitive tablet and I want to buy a good stylus for it. My wife will use it for drawing - so it will be nice if it is suitable for this too.

Personally, I got Andonit Jot Pro because I wanted to be able to write as thin as possible (when needed). Especially, at one point owning Note 10.1, I missed the S-pen experience. So I got Andonit Jot Pro based on the review for my transformer infinity, which i also tried to use on my wife's ipad 2.
Though I can tell you one thing. Capative screen stylus is nothing but a finger replacement. So accuracy is nowhere that of inductive technology e.g. Galaxy Note 10.1, Wacom Pen devices. Furthermore, there is no palm rejection i.e. as soon as your palm touches screen it recognizes the palm.
So to be honest, even cheap stylus would still do the job. if I could return my andonit stylus, I would have and just kept using my 3 for $5 stylus over $20+ Andoit Jot pro.

So, as far as the pressure sensitivity goes, the adonit joint pro does work? It's the lack of palm rejection that's bothersome?
EDIT: My bad, it's a capacitive stylus. There are pressure-sensitive styluses for Android, but I don't think they are supported in apps which makes them pretty useless.

You are absolutely right. I believe at least on iPad people tried couple different things such as using bluetooth signal, or even using ultrasound to make pressure sensitivity. As you have figured those pen are usually very expensive. Last I recall are almost close to $100. Even the pressure sensitivity works (which i am still skeptical) but even then two major issues:
1. application support - just as you said. Each app has to support it individually and not many app does that. Simply because most android device don't have the capability. So why would devs implement such.
2. Lack of accuracy/palm rejection - Without these simply your writing experience won't be a real i.e. yes you can right here and there for fun, but for practical use such as taking note, you will quickly learn that actually doing such on real paper would be faster.

Careful with the Jot Pro. I own one, and it scratched the living daylights out of my Nexus 7 and Xoom. While it's by far the most precise (since it let's you look at the precise location where you will write), it's not worth it to me if it means scratching the screen. I also refuse to use a screen protector because of how they make my fingers feel when swiping across the screen.
As a decent replacement, I now use the Boxwave Evertouch, which I bought on Amazon for about $10. It's nowhere near as precise as the Jot Pro, but it won't scratch my precious N10. I still use the Jot Pro on my Xoom and N7 since they're already scratched.

I used a Cosmonaut stylus for a year on an IPad 2 with the Notheshelf App. It was a great stylus and the app gave you what they called "wrist protection". Basically horizontal and perpendicular lines where you could set your palm without leaving marks, so you could write just with the stylus. (they don't have this app for android... i asked them)
Now that I am moving to a Nexus 10 (my first android device) I am looking for an App with this characteristics. Can anyone recommend one?

I think lectures notes has a "palm safe zone"

I'II have to monitor my screen for scratches from the Jot stylus. I found I was having to grip the stylus too hard because of the aluminum body of the stylus. Also, any dirt or oils on the screen greatly reduce the sensitively of the Jot stylus, even trapping dirt between the hard plastic stylus tip and screen. Therefore, those of you using the Jot may wish to consider keeping your screen really clean. A second idea that has really helped is getting a length of heat-shrink tubing from an electronics store and shrinking it around the barrel of the stylus. This has given me a much more comfortable grip.
However, I will have to keep an eye out for scratches. So far, so good.

I think Adonit jot very good. I use with Google Nexus 7, very good when writing and painting. Can you search in google, have so much shop sale it

Correct, & Papyrus Beta also has palm recognition. (Pressure sure there's one more app too, maybe Antipaper.)
As for the stylus, I currently have a cheap Griffin stylus and a Wacom Bamboo stylus. Between the two, Wacom's Bamboo stylus seems to be very popular and IMO it is much more accurate than the cheapo options.
I use the Bamboo pretty much everyday to take notes in class, it's a great option if your looking for an alternative to the Adonit stylus.

I'm getting the gosmart , it has the thinnest most Accurate tip and its got a spring on the front that makes it pressure sensatibe in a way

pogo connect
I have been doing some research on stylus out there and the Pogo Connect seams to be one of the best things out there. Its supposed to work through Bluetooth
anyone knows if it will work with our Nexus 10 and if there are Android apps that will support it? that would be great!

I'm beginning to see a few scratches on my screen from the Jot Pro. It looks like a single event as if a small grain of sand got caught between the stylus and screen. I may try some sort of screen protector.
Has anyone reported scratches from other styli?

so i am thinking of getting the jotpro stylus for my nexus 10 but after reading this thread i am a bit concerned with the scratched issue some users talked about. does it come from the stylus or because of sand or something trapped between the screen and the plastic plate? i want to use the stylus indoors for notes on my university.

Hand stylus is amazing. 4mm tip gives great accuracy. Also you can get 6 replacement tips for $10.

When I say sand, I'm not referring to beach or outdoor sand. I'm referring to tiny abrasive particles, normally too small to notice. Perhaps I should have said dirt, contaminants, or some other term. The hard plastic tip of the Jot pro requires more downwards force than other styli. I don't believe the tip itself does the scratching, but hard tiny debris pressed into the glass by the Jot pro.
Has any one tried the Jot pro with a screen protector?

Currently using a generic capacitive stylus and it does not work great. Mind sharing your stylus and share your thoughts?

To be honest if you really want a tablet with a stylus, you should have gone with either the SGTS4 or the SGTS6 as both of those have the S-Pen. Which is the best stylus for a device.

To be honest, this is not helpful to tell someone they should have gone with another tablet for stylus support. How does this help?
I have the Galaxy Tab S5e because it's cheaper. Many styli do work on most if not all tablets. The only thing that tablets that have official stylus support offer is pressure sensitivity and palm rejection. Two features which are only necessary for artists. For taking notes, I don't give a F about pressure sensitivity nor do I rest my palm on the screen/ paper when I write.
I'll be testing some styli and get back to OP.

It helps by telling you you are wasting you time looking for a stylus for the S5e. There are two types of stylus. A plain capacitive touchscreen stylus that won't draw a line any finer than you can with your finger, and an electronic one like the S-Pen that will draw a line like a ballpoint pen. But the electronic one won't work with the S5e, so don't bother looking for one. They require a second digitizer that is situated behind the LCD and the S5e doesn't have one. The cost of that second digitizer is why the S-Pen tablets are more expensive. The pens themselves are fairly cheap.

I have Adonit stylus Dash 3 Silver, it works pretty well. It has problem when you are trying draw really slowly, It makes some weird curved lines. But I am using Sketchbook by Autodesk and it has some line smoothing what really helps.

I use a meko stylus. They are double ended.
One end is the normal blunt sort of stylus, which is great for on screen typing, while the other has a clear disc which allows you to see exactly where the fine center is touching the screen.
The actual stylus looks like a high quality steel pen with rubber finger grip
I bought a set of two 'pens' with 6 spare tips from Amazon for around £10 over a year ago and have only used 2 of the spare tips
Excellent quality and value. Highly recomanded.

I will grant you that that type of stylus beats the kind you can buy for about 50 cents each. But it is still a capacitive stylus that won't produce the fine line of an electronic one. There are apps which attempt to produce a "fine line" by extrapolating what would be the center of the "fat" line, but the results leave a lot to be desired. Bottom line, if you are serious needing a good stylus for your device, you need to purchase a tablet that was made for one. It's easy to tell. If the tablet didn't come with a stylus, it wasn't made for one.

Seems I've been handing out mistaken advice about stylii for "touch only" tablets. S-Pen and other "Wacom" based stylii DO require a second digitzer to work and most tablets simply don't have them. HOWEVER, I puchased a BoxWave Active Sylus because it was touted to work with my HP Envy X360 laptop. Just to prove it wouldn't work with a "touch only" tablet, I tried it with both my SM-T510 and T720 tablets. Much to my surprise, it works with both of them. I've never used a stylus for drawing, so I can't guarantee it works as well as an S-Pen, but it does produce a "ballpoint pen" type line in the drawing apps I tried. Also, the line width doesn't appear to be "pressure sensitive". I was able to buy mine on eBay for about $20, new with free shipping.
