[Q] Will factory reset affect my unlock and ROM? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I used to have an Captivate associated with my google account, but I bought a Nexus S and now the Captivate is my mom's phone the only issue is that apparently I can't change the main google account without doing a factory reset.
This is where my question actually starts, will factory reset block the cellphone again?(I unlocked it with the code) I'm in Brazil right now and I'm not sure about where is my unlock code;
My second problem is that I have installed the cognition ROM so that I could finally have flash on my phone which means that I can't get the unlock code again right?
So will factory reset block my cellphone or reverse it back to 2.1? If it reverse back to 2.1 will I be able to get the unlock code?
Thanks for the help and sorry for my english

I could bv be wrong, but i Believe that after a flash you cant go back to stock by hitting that button. what it should do is re-install your latest flashed Rom fresh.

I don't actually want to back to default, just change the google account, would be great if I could change the main account and keep both the Cognition and Unlock

You will keep unlock and the ROM will still be Cog. You will lose all personal data.

Thats exactly what I was expecting thanks!

Sorry for double posting....
I just did the factory reset and well it worked but now instead of change the google account it simply won't ask me anymore for one, it ereased the gmail and market apps, is there anywhere where I can find both this apps?

Now you can restore google account and sync. Gmail will be OK. But as for apps only manually restore. For future install Titanium Backup and use it for apps backup before flashing.

Any way to wifi/bluetooth tether w/o ROOT??

So I really would like to tether my G1 phone. I need the tethering done by either wifi or bluetooth (not USB).
Are there any options to do this without rooting?
If not, I guess I'll consider rooting...I just didn't want to have lose all my personal data (messages, bookmarks, etc.). I think that my contacts would be the only thing saved because they are kept on gmail account...so they'd synch on the newly rooted phone?
Thanks in advance for any help!!

PDA net is the only tehter software that doesn't require root (unless I missed something) but that's USB only. So yes, you'll have to root for tethering over WiFi or bluetooth.
The one click method doesn't require you to wipe, although it is recommended, so if you flash a Cyanogen or JF build all your data should remain in tact.
So, my suggestion is use the one click method to flash Cyanogen's recovery image and from there install Cyanogen's 4.04 ROM without wiping (it's very stable). In theory that should keep all your data. If the phone boot loops after you've flashed Cyanogen's ROM, then just wipe and reflash. That means you would loose your data, but you would have root for tethering.

Rooting is very easy and quick now i believe theres a link in my signiture to my own guide which is very specific but just stop before you partion your sd card
Thanks for the info so far. Maybe I'll just root my phone then. So before I root, what are all the disadvantages??? Here are the ones I've seen so far...
1. Could lose all your personal data (although this should be minimized if you backup most of your stuff first using a backup app from the marketplace first)??
2. T-Mobile MyFaves app doesn't work.
3. The built in Instant Messaging app doesn't work for MSN, AIM, etc. (Is there an IM app out there that works as well as the default one? So it keeps you signed in all the time?...I need a good IM app that works all the time and keeps you signed in...)
Anything else??
1. Use my backup pro(not free, idk any free ones, sorry) from market to backup/restore all apps/bookmarks/sms/call log/etc
2. MyFaves app works now.
3. I have no idea, since I use Meebo instead.
Just remember that you can't backup stuff like texts and bookmarks before rooting, as backup apps require root
Ah...interesting.
So when you root...there isn't really anyway to go back to just how you were before trying to root?? I'm guessing you need root first in order to use a full backup utility like nandroid backup or something?
All in all...I need to root, just trying to figure out for sure what I'm getting into before the jump.

Does it? Does it come stock with cyanogenmod 4.0.1 or 4.0.4? Or do you have to install it after the fact? Any links that talks about how to do this?

Does it work pretty well for you? Does it keep you signed in all the time? Even when your phone goes idle? Do you like it as good as the default Android IM app?
You can use most backup programs without rooting.

You can install it (use "appsinstaller" from market) to install the .apk.

You can get it from this thread.

I don't use the default IM app because I don't have unlimited texting. I like meebo, though sometimes it signs out, it has an auto sign-in option. It works for me. YMMV
It looks like MyBackup from the Market doesn't require root and has a 30 day free trial

[Q] unable to setup account for my CM mod *urgent help needed*

i just flash my firmware to CM mod 6.1.2, but am having trouble setting up my gmail account!
after i enter my email and password, it brings me to another screen 'server settings' i press next and it keep popping up 'unable to open connection to server'
pls help!!!
as all my contacts are in there!!! and i flash it without doing backup...
Your phone is probably offline.
Did you apply the appropriate baseband file in open recovery?
do a complete wipe of your device from recovery menu, then install the CM again, report back.
Ummm... he would still have the same problem... he would will have to apply the right baseband...

Yes, sry I didn't see your reply while I was replying.
You're probably right.
I think I've seen the questions for "server settings" when I was mistakenly trying to set an account for a Exchange server instead of Google account.
I think when trying to set an Google account it shouldn'tt ask the server configuration questions, should it?
Not that I recall, but it might happen if there's no connection

I also never server a Gmail setting screen...
But in any case; the OP should check:
1. Baseband files
2. APNs
3. If this does not work, or he cant figure out...wifi would be a good test.
But honestly, something seems strange. Another question would be what kind of wipes were done for the flash to CM?
Dalvik wipe and /cache are necessary before flashing. Somebody mentioned full wipe. I am inclined to agree if the OP was not already on a CM base rom.

ok i dont know if i found the correct solution.
but after i installed google apps (market, map etc) then it can connect to the server without bringing me to the 'server settings' screen already

Resetting gmail or factory resetting rooted NC?

Stupid question, but is there anyway to factory reset an internally rooted nook? I don't even really want to reset it, I just need to make my primary email something else so I can sell it without having someone have access to my email account through android market.
Thanks.
I had this problem too, except I used a friends backup to flash my new one, and tried the factory reset option, which just rebooted the device, and nothing else..
I ended up having to reflash it with a clean ROM..
What about removing gapps data and cache and then flashing gapps again? Just thinking out loud here.. no guarantees..

I read to do that in the net, too, but as weird as it sounds, I can't find google apps in the list of apps in my manage applications section of settings.
There's no 'gapps' application. You need to find market, gmail, Google framework, etc..
Sent from my NookColor using Tapatalk
Sorry for the dumb response with the gapps thing. I went ahead and cleared the data on all those google programs, email, gmail, market etc. Anything else I need to do? I really don't know what you guys mean by 'reflash'. Sorry... but thank you!
Ok, good news guys. I got both "email" and "gmail" to completely forget about me. Bad news , the option to clear data on the market is completely greyed out. So I can't seem to get rid of my data on there, and it stills allows me to buy apps on the market. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the help so far!
EDIT: MAJOR problem!
I tried putting in the Clockwork recovery IMG and the new version of the stock os, but it seemed to boot normal. I tried rearranging the files, but now when I try to book the NOok up, card or no card, it does nothing . Did I just brick this ?
Certainly not.. format the SD and burn the cwr img again.
Just check that you do it right, it has been explained thousands of time on the forum.

HELP! Lost all Contacts, Market, Apps, Astro file manager...

Hey everyone,
yesterday I was trying to upgrade my Android to Froyo. I did all the steps, everything was going great and when I had to restore (the final step) after I booted the phone everything looked just like when I bought it. The main differance though, was that all my contacts, messages, the Android Market, Astro File Manager and many other apps were GONE! So far I have managed to restore some of my messages, I've been trying to import/export my contacts, but still no sign of them . The most interesting thing is that when I connect my phone to the PC, I can still see all my pictures, music, apps. Can this be solved?
Oh and I forgot to mention that this appears a lot "The process com.google.process.gapps has stopped unexpectedly..." I read how to fix it, but I can't since I cannot access my file manager
Please if you have any idea, let me know. Thanks in advance
Hi are you from stock ROM and you upgraded to froyo of which ROM?
I hope you backup first before the upgrade and I hope you did some clean installation.
Let us know specifically your problem.
I noticed that you are new, please take sometime reading the rules and introducing yourself to everyone Topics are in General Section
Didn't u backup before?
Well yeah, that's normal. Every upgrade requires a full wipe which means that all your data will be erased. Didn't you read the warnings?

For contacts you can restore from your google account if you have synced with google..

Yes, as I said I did all the required steps for upgrade (including the backup), but I guess that wasn't successful, even though I was certain I did it right. Anyway, I was trying to upgrade from 2.1 to Froyo.
Yup, I'm new. Thanks for your advice

[Q] Galaxy Note screenlock problem

I've got the screenlock password on my Galaxy Note. It's in English layout (it was originally entered in Swipe keyboard). Then I've changed the Settings to Samsung keyboard and French layout (same latin letters) and switched off the screen. Now my pass is not working as I cannot change layout to English (the settings button on keyboard is grey). So would you recommend any solution as I don't want to wipe all the data. Is it possible to change layout to original English or reset password somehow? Thanks a lot in advance.

the best way is to do a nandroid backup or use titanium backup to backup all your apps and data and flash a rom again if you are flashing ICS rom remember to use a safe kernel before flashing and do a complete wipe, hope this help

As far as I know Nandroid Backup is an image copy of the system. So will the restore overcome my screen lock problem? Anyway could you give me some sane links on Nandroid Backup procedure for Galaxy Note (or maybe it's the same on all Android devices). And what do you think maybe partial restore could restore everything but language (layout) settings?
BTW some people say that I should try hardware keyboard connected - will it help?
its the same. boot in Cwm, backup and restore, backup.
After this when you reset, and able to log into the phone, just go to the keyboard layout and check how to type your password your password in French.
Then do a restore and get access.
partial restore may work or may not

Sorry, I didn't get your point. I thought that French symbols just have dirrerent ASCII (or whatever) codes in comparison with English. Because my pass it's just several letters and 2 numbers.
i dont know if i am making sense, but what i wanted to say was
if i type abcde using english keyboard
will the french keyboard use the same buttons too
any way, first get your phone booted
oh yeah.. may be a usb keyboard will help... worth a try definitely

Alas, it didn't work out. I've made backup, wiped everything, then restored my backup. And here I am again with my f..avorite French layout. Could there be any different ideas?
after the wipe , did you try to reboot the phone before restoring the backup, does the phone bypass the lock screen. offcourse, if you chose to restore you will reach the same point.

Sure - it was absolutely clear ROM. Without anything. And the settings were all on english.
then you should try to restore your apps using titanium backup
