You don't have to give up root with 1.1.

i know that i was saying if you have rooted NC then you dont have in store features when you actually go to a B&N

I thought I saw a post that said it was working again with rooted 1.1.

Rooted nooks with 1.1 should be working in store now.

What does should mean in this case and which functions are working?
- exclusive articles from top authors
- great offers including cafe treats and unique deals
- Read any book free on your NOOK or NOOKcolor for up to an hour per day when connected to the free in-store Wi-FiĀ®
Homer

Sorry, maybe "should" isn't the right word. I have read several posts by users stating that the in-store features were now working. I have not verified it myself and don't know what features are enabled.

Can't remember where I saw the other posts. I'd try to google it.

[Q] Impacts of rooting for a noob...

So, I am somewhat knowledgeable (can follow directions without bricking other devices), and have searched these forums, but I think they noise has gotten to be too much. Here is what I am looking for:
What, if any, functionality is lost by rooting?
I just want to make sure I do not lose any abilities or features that I am not expecting.
No functionality is lost.

Actually, many people have reported that the B&N In-Store functionalities are lost (i.e. 1 hour free reading per book per day in store, free book/cafe offers, etc.)
I can also confirm that the loss of in-store and cafe offers is something I have experienced.
Lost functionality....
So I guess for now I will delay rooting until a way is discovered (if ever) to avoid not being able to get the free hour per day. I work near a B&N location, so it is convenient to spend my lunches there reading stuff I don't have to buy.
I've got that issue

After rooting, I cannot get Barnes and Noble "Shop" application to do anything. It just sits and spins.
When I look at Settings -> About Your NOOKcolor, it says both Owner and Account is "Unavailable"
Not sure how to get that part working. Would like to look at the ebooks and mags available from BN

Note that "many" people have reported the in-store problem, but "not everyone" ... I for one, still have full in-store access and no problems with the "Shop" B&N features and downloading. Thus, there is something "funny" going on in the rooting process or differences in Nook Color versions of software or hardware that is causing various rooting quirks ... all the more reason, I mentioned in another thread, that auto-nooter or other rooting packages should be kept simple, e.g., a Vanilla version without add on keyboards, laychers, live wallpaper, etc, as it would be a lot easier to track any bugs
Silly question but, how do you know if in-store function is working? How can I choose, in my Nook, to read a book on my free one hour a day?
Sent from my rockin' rooted Nook Color using XDA App
Quick question:
I have rooted and everything is working fine (except YouTube, but that's not the reason for this post). I wondered if I installed LauncherPro on my NookColor if I would still be able to add books from my library to the home screen like the default home.
Thanks!

argh, thanked the wrong post due to a browser glitch!
meant to thank rsptexas post and mention that i too have no issues launching the B&N store after rooting and agree that simpler is better for auto-rooting.
one thing these 'many people' don't mention is what firmware they were running originally, what method they used to 'root' their device, and what extra addons they put after cracking the thing open. way too many variables there to just say rooting breaks B&N store functionality.

Nook App Store & 2.2 update

I purchased a Nook last Friday at BN. The BN employee was giving me his entire sales pitch which I let him because I wanted to look at it before I was going to buy it. He went through the usual stuff of being an awesome e-reader but then went through another tangent that it will be able to moonlight as tablet.
He showed me some of the extra apps and web browser then he said that the nook will be getting an update later this month and that you will be able to install apps. (I remember hearing about the Nook rumors and denial. ) I asked him you mean the Nook will get the Google market place? He said no, it will be a more controlled environment by Barnes and Noble. We want to prevent things like porn and malware going to your device. So that means a Nook App Store? Interesting, huh? I would rather have Google market place but for the average consumer this would be huge.
I guess this already known: (You can delete the post)

This has pretty much been known from the beginning. It will be an update, but it will not be a 2.2 update...
I really see no point for B&N to ever got to 2.2 if they are going to keep a closed type of App store.
I don't know anything about Android, other than 2.2 has flash. That's the biggest reason I want 2.2. To me the web without flash is very 10 years ago.

Understandable.
I have been hearing something about a switchover from Flash to WebM..Not sure what its all about.
I am certain at some point the Nook is going to get Flash with 2.2 or 2.3, but probably later than sooner...

NC 1.1.0 Rooted -- B&N In store features?

Anyone have this version running and have the B&N in store capabilities? I dont want to lose my root but would love to be able to read in store for the 1 hr for free. I had heard that with this 1.1.0 you could access the In Store features ( fee reading & free drink?)
Thanks - Aaron
Probably a good idea to search the forums before you post. twelve threads down from this new one you started is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=860830
Short answer is yes. . . 1.1 rooted still has access to all in-store features.

In store with a rooted NC

FWIW, and to provide a semi-definitive answer to questions some people have posed: I am currently in the cafe of my local Barnes & Noble, enjoying a coffee, a biscotti (two, actually... bad, bad boy) and borrowing a book with my Autonootered (3.0) Nook Color. The store Wifi did recognize my NC when I powered up.
Only change I've made to the system is turning off auto updates with sqlite.
(Update: I may have broken the in-store function. More when I get home. zGotta run)
OK, so here's the full story:
Went to B&N to verify for myself whether rooting Nook Color (Autonooter 3.0) locked you out of in-store goodies such as browsing books for an hour.
To my delight, I was able to borrow a book and browse, no problem. So I figured: hey, let's press my luck and see what sort's of activities could potentially kill that ability. First thing I did was launch Opera 11 and start surfing. Came back to the book I was browsing and all was still good. Then I decided to download an app from the Android App store. So I downloaded Autodesk Sketchbook Mobile (OMG, I cannot believe this wonderful app runs a mere .99 cents. Bargain of the century, if you ask me.) So far so good. Everything is still working. I can still browse the book in-store. But at one point Opera started feeling a bit sluggish. I decided to use Advanced Task Killer Free edition to free us some resources. I went ahead and nuked a couple of processes and then tried to come back to the borrowed book using the "keep reading" icon in the task bar. Now I got a message saying "this resource is no longer available" or something to that effect. So launched the Barnes and Noble hoping to browse another book. Now, however, none of the books had the "in-store" label on them. So I restarted the Nook (turned it off and back on). When the Nook re-connected to WiFi I was recognized as a Nook, and books in the store did show the "in-store" label, but when I tried to browse one I was stock at the "processing" screen and saw no movement on the progress bar. That's when something came up and I had to go.
Now, coming back home I decided to launch the store again and see if I could buy a title. I tried a magazine, but this time, even buying the magazine I was stuck at the "processing" screen with no movement on the progress bar. So I re-booted the Nook and tried again. First time it failed, but the second time it downloaded the magazine. I suspect that the first time I may simply have entered my password wrong.
Next I'll try going back to Barnes and Noble and see if I'm still locked out of in-store browsing.
The lack of in-store browsing is not a huge deal, to be honest. But if I'd managed to break the store altogether (not be able to buy books) that would be a stock-rooted deal-breaker for me. I'd probably dump the stock image and start playing with some of the fancy new ROMs that people are developing over in the development forum. no way would I go back to stock un-rooted, though. This device is just astonishingly cool once you've got full access to the Android Market and the myriad applications available there. I used to think that I'd be happy with Barnes and Noble's offerings once they opened their store, but honestly, I doubt they're going to offer stuff like the "IPCONFIG" and "PING" apps, or half the games I've downloaded.
Ok, quick update: I'm back at Barnes& Noble. It's not the same store, but FWIW, in-storr borrowing is working for me. In addition, I was able to buy a book (Works of David Hume, in case you're curious.) So, yeah, rooting by itself will not compromise your ability to enjoy in-store features.
That's all. Bye, bye.
Thanks for the write up. Just got mine on Saturday. That was one thing I was wondering about with rooting it. What all I can't do. I know there's alot I can't do now unrooted, but I didn't get this for a tablet, I wanted an e reader. I live around the corner from B&N, and have been a member for a couple yrs. Just having fun now unrooted still learning this thing.

If you can wait a couple of weeks, you should be able to start buying Apps from the Barnes & Noble app store. Should suffice for most casual users.

when you find one let us know! I've got boxwave stylus, which I think is the same as the one sold by griffin and targus and it's just not that great for detailed work.

Off-topic question for you: Is it good enough for hand writing? I want a stylus to go with a notepad app (really just a glorified paint I guess), to make taking notes easier, but I am hesitant to buy one from all the negative reviews I've seen here and elsewhere. Thanks!
Craine
I bought a cheap $4.00 capacitive stylus off ebay and it's basically worthless. So I'm on the hunt for one also.

Zinio is out for Android... not Nook.

I hope this will eventually come to the Nook.
You can side-load it, at least under CM7. Don't know why it wouldn't work under other versions where you can side-load. Here's the thread:

Don't know. I'm using CM7 2.6.32. I think that might be a somewhat later version of CM7 than the one you are using. Another issue may be that I had never downloaded a magazine from them. Like I mentioned I just tried it this morning. I guess you can count yourself as lucky.
Is this better than magazines on the Nook app?

Would zinio normally ask for some form of payment before allowing you to download? I have never used it.
Zinio may never come to Nook
1. It was rumored that Zinio was managing the digital magazine subscriptions for B&N. Emphasis on "rumored." No proof was provided.
2. B&N has its own subscription service to some of the same magazines at twice the price. I don't believe they will ever allow a competitor's program on the stock NC.
Older XDA thread - Works for me

I had been running Zinio on an older CM7 load. I reflashed everything and just reinstalled Zinio. The old one at the XDA thread above works for the Nook Color. I couldnt get the new one to work on CM7.
I'm reading my magazine subscriptions.
It is now officially available.

There was an update to Zinio a couple of days ago and now it's not working under CM7. (At least for me). Hopefully they can fix this soon.
Look at the comments, looks like they broke it basically. Anywho, most likely problems related to not being able to load it on the NC (or likely any wifi tablet) are probably around permissions or such. I looked at perms, at least they're not requiring SMS or such, which screws with pretty much every wifi-only tablet, but they could be requiring other things in the manifest.
IE: It's an app problem at this point. Google has firmly decided to filter more apps based on capabilities. It'd be nice, however, if they'd say exactly WHY an app isn't compatible.
Looking at the logs on crash, I see unresolved method "setSystemUiVisibility". This is only available from API level 11 and up (ie: Honeycomb)
Somehow, it thinks the Nook is a Honeycomb device. If it's due to poor code on the Zinio side then it's harder to fix, but if it's something in Cyanogenmod ROM...
I'm running 7.1.0 release.
Evo yes - Nook no - darn!
What's weird (to me) is Zinio v1. 12.4204 works on my Evo 4G, CM7.0.3.1-supersonic, but not my NookColor CM7. 1.0-encore -- the latter which would be a near perfect device except for that one little shortcoming.
zinio installed from the market and opens fine. I can't login cause I don't have an account but it seems to work fine.
