I don't know about you, but I was sick of that.
I flash new ROMs a few times a day on my phone, losing my /data/app apps some times a day.
So I made a flashable zip that solves this problem.
This ZIP is ONLY for pushing apps into /data/app!
Right, there are a few things you need:
- The flashable zip, download it below
- Root Explorer
- WinZip
Do the following:
- Using Root Explorer, copy the apps installed in /data/app to /sdcard
- They will have names like com.***.***-1, leave them like that. DO NOT RENAME!
- Connect your phone through USB to your PC
- Copy the apps from /sdcard to your pc
- Unzip 'data_app_install.zip' and put the apps into /data/app
- Select '/META-INF' and '/data', rightclick, 'Add to archive'
- Choose .ZIP as type
- Let it zip
- Copy the new .ZIP file to your external SD
- Flash a new ROM
- Flash the new .ZIP file containing your /data/app apps
- Reboot and enjoy!

same same Works for me..
Does it keep also all the settings in the apps?
When the app settings are saved in the app itself, then yes.
When the app settings are saved somewhere else (meaning NOT in /data/app), then no.
Does that mean it should also be possible to exchange the data folder in a ROM zip and flash it directly with it?
When you know how to edit the updater-script so that it adds the /data folder to your phone aswell, then, yeah, it's possible.
I haven't found the mounting command for /data tho so I can't help you there.

My backup root sukcs, it did not recover any settings for me. Titanium backup is nice, but it takes too long to get the apps one by one.
<3 this but is there any way how i could backup app data which are not saved in data/app?

I can explain that one for you.. You came from a stock MRXX rom, flashed a CM7 nightlies and lost your backed up data.. Because MyBackup uses 1st sd partition on stock rom, and sd-ext/mnt on CM7.. Your backup is still there after flash, you just need to move it from sd to sd-ext..

the update.zip which titanium backup creates is used for installing titanium backup after a data wiping, for creating update.zip there are many softwares available in xda you just need to make the folder tree and have to flace files in them

I would like to edit the following rom for my tv box :
https://www.cellc.co.za/softwares/update_CELLC_PRD_Cellc_cellc_Secured_4.0.1.115_SB522.zip
The rom was originally signed by SignApk . I would like to remove one application , welcomestb.apk and its associated odex, welcomestb.odex .
The problem is the first time setupwizard is not connecting to server as the server is no longer available. So i can not go past the wifi settings and use the device. More or less i would like to edit the rom such that it doesnt require the setupwizard. I would also like to add a few more applications such as vlc player and media center to the rom . The rom is based on android 4.0.1. Unfortunately it does not have twrp or clockwod recovery. Thus i would like to sign it with SignApk after i am done editing. WOULD U KINDLY GIVE ME POINTERS ON HOW TO GO ABOUT MODYFING THE ROM SUCH THAT I CAN FLASH IT USING STOCK RECOVERY
Hi guys..
Can someone explain to me in detail ref: Titanium Backup, what is update.zip function..what is it & what does it do..??
I read somewhere it can be used to create a zip file of your backup apps.. in your next flash you can flash the update.zip in order to restore your apps from "cwm recovery"..!!
Thanks for any help or better tips/solutions..!!
It creates an unsigned update.zip file for installing TB in recovery mode.

So is it only for installing TB..!!
"Is it possible to create a zip file with all my apps which I can restore from recovery mode"..??
It's only tb. App u flash with cwm,but do a nandroid backup and tb. can extract and restore from your nandroid.quite easy
When u make a tb.zip then use titaniumbackup.zip name,so it's easy to locate and flash.
U use this when u wipe and instal new rom.
Btw.if u extract your rom using root explorer u can modify,delete/add apps and kernel, everything to your liking, then zip it with rootexplorer and flash in cwm.then it's only a few apps u have to restore depends on how many apps u have installed.
Remember if this file doesn't exist then create it and put your 3' apps in there

Can you explain more clearly..I'm confused on what you said about make tb.zip..(how)..?
So do I make zip > use update.zip function..??
Open settings in tb. There is an option to make a "update.zip" of tb. This one u can flash from cwm,but its only needed to flash when u wipe your phone and it's only tb. App that is restored, the rest of your missing apps u restore from tb.
In tb. settings there is also an option to extract your nandroid backup(of cause u got 1) and restore apps from that.
About "root explorer". read a bit more on how to add and remove things from roms u downloaded.even though it's quite easy to do
@Zodiaxe.. Many thanks cleared up my confusion..
The update.zip is only used for tb..!!
I was hoping there would be a method whereby all my apps could be compressed in one zip file, which I can then flash in cwm to "restore" all my apps..
I hate the tiring method of restoring them manually..!!
Yeah I know what u mean.its a drag,LOL
but buy the premium its worth the money.
When u restore in premium u select the apps(as in free) but it's then 1-click restore and tb. do the rest.and a whole lot nice features comes with the premium

What exactly is an update.zip file used for? I know I had to run it when I flashed AOKP to my Droid Inc. It was in the instructions to do so, but I was not completely sure what I was doing at that exact step of the process.
Also, I have TB (Premium). I use it to back up all system data and user apps. I have never needed it to restore any data, but I am sure I will in the future. This is mainly because I flashed AOKP M5 to my Galaxy Nexus a little over 2 weeks ago and have not looked back.
My last question at the moment is this. If I wipe/clear cache, clear dalvik cache and wipe user data (factory reset) how does my TB data stay in tact exactly?

This is a general explanation of update zip
There are several ways to install applications or library
files to an Android Phone . You can use Market application
to find and install or adb command line tool to install or
push the files to Android file system. These are all easy to
implement for single file but if you have several
applications or library files to install at once, it might be
better to use update zip file. The update zip file is Android
advanced system to install applications or lib files to
Android file system using recovery tool. This method is
commonly used by rom or theme developers to distribute
their package.
Hope that makes sense
Answer to your last question all data saved in TB will stay in tact..so when you flash you can restore apps & data nothing will be lost (as long as you don't format sd card)

It definitely makes more sense now, but I am not quite there yet. Are you saying that update.zip file is just one option and that using TB would be an alternate to using update.zip file?
As far as your explanation on the TB file staying in tact, that makes sense. Thank you.

If you go back read first few posts..
In tb the update.zip function used to restore tb only from cwm.. Or you can create an update.zip in order to restore/update something in your rom (as in your case when you installed aokp you also flashed update zip)
An update.zip is flashable file, this can be a rom, theme or apps.
there is a update.zip on your SD-card, this is your costum recovery(cwm) do not remove or rename this file
No, clearing cache or dalvik cache nor factory reset will affect TB. or it's data.
And wipe cache + dalvik is a good thing to do once in a while.
Factory reset is is done i u flash a new rom or have trouble with your phone, lag, slow or other problems
Usually this is caused by some app or settings. Then do a factory reset,if u can't find the problem

But can update.zip file be created where all my apps are inside or compressed inside..??
So when I flash new rom can I flash that update.zip file (after renaming it) in order to restore my apps..?? "Yes I'm aware of tb batch one click restore..
No, not with TB but u can extract and restore apps from your cwm(nandroid) backups.
check out the APP2ZIP,that can do do exactly what u are looking for, make a flashable zip with your apps and settings.u can find it here on xda and in play store.
regarding on the topic
Im just newbie on android and i have intentionally delete the folder App on my system files thinking that it was just a back up file
and my android phone just stock on boot up!
I have to same android phone
rooted
is it possible to make an TB update zip containing the system app on my other android phone and
flash it on the broken one using the CWM?
No. It isn't that simple. While you could install titanium backup with the update . zip the phone still won't boot. And you need a running system to even start tb.
So you would need the Rom you were using. Flash that first and flash the tb update.zip afterwards. Then you will get a rom with tb already installed.
From there you can start to restore apps you hopefully have backed up before...

Yes.. It's all there as long as you don't wipe or format sd card. (tb data folder)

Reviving this to add that last month tb added support for update.zip which holds all backups.
Theres 2 now:
1. settings > update.zip is a flashable zip with only tb
2. batch > recovery update.zip is a flashable zip with all backups
Everyone should be using one of these two methods to ensure u have the latest tb to restore from (since roms are always out of date), or to restore everything straight in recovery.
Hi,
I did backup with Titanium Backup, then I created update.zip. After wiping and installing ROM again, I also install update.zip from TB. All apps installs properly, but their data isn't recovered. Every app looses its settings.
What am I doing wrong?
maybe you need to have the right version --
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/1...ate-flashable-zips-of-all-your-apps-and-data/
Ran into the same problem as well, turns out you will need TB installed and granted SU permissions before flashing update.zip in recovery so that data restore will work.
1. Install custom ROM
2. Boot into android, complete setup questions
3. Install TB from Google Play
4. Open TB, grant SU
5. Boot into Recovery and flash update.zip
6. Boot into Android, TB will autostart and start restoring data.
Hope that helps!

It's old, but I'm going to answer: the update.zip file generated with titanium backup may have a lot of apps and you can flash the zip file and the will all install at once. Otherwise, if you just boot the device and run TB app, it will ask you if yoy want to install or cancell befor installing, and after, it will let you choose between open new app or job done.
Then if you have like 35 apps to restore, you're like: install - done- install- done - install - done- install- done.............. like crazy.... zip file is just 1 for all and it's done
NOTE: restoring with update.zip is giving me a hard time with a few apps like whatsapp, waze and nikon wifi. You should have the regular TB backup in your sd just in case if you're wiping/flashing a rom.

If it would work right, it's way faster, just try next time you wipe your phone.
The problem is that not all apps work properly this way. But via recovery it's just too fast, yet not recommended as the only backup as you might have to uninstall and restore a few apps that don't work right (force close)
It wold be nice to have all methods available working ok, but there's no doubt that the the app works better.
Just learned from experience. Many apps force closed when using update.zip. I'll stick with using TB app despite it taking longer
I can't restore my backup from april. Is it because of a new version? That would help me a lot guys I lost all my contact numbers....but I still have all my backups but titanium backup can't open it...

I had same error when trying to apply the update.zip from Titanium backup via TWRP. In my situation the reason was that TWRP seems to have a limit of max. 2GB for an update.zip, as found somewhere in a discussion at XDA.

It's an old thread but did restoring via update.zip as improved? Also, is there still the 2gb limit since we are like 4 years after the last post Thnx for your feedback
Seems not like it. With latest Titanium backup version on 14 November 2018 I can't restore an update.zip bigger than 2GB (haven't tried smaller though).

After reading the manual provided in this thread, I decided to root my Galaxy Ace.
Rooting went well and installing CWM5 too. After installing CMW, I made a backup.
Now I want to uninstall some system apps that I don't use, such as Samsung apps.
I keep finding the same answers:
Go to System\apps folder, find the app you want to delete and delete it. But won't that just remove the installation file and leave the program installed?
Second question:
If I decide to flash a new ROM (say CM9), where does my old ROM go and how do I keep programs that I have now (Think free office) in my new ROM?
By the way, this is what you're working with:
Me: much experience with Windows, none with Android.
Samsung Galaxy Ace, Dutch T-Mobile branded Phone.

Hi,
Okay, after you rooted, you cannot just delete an item right away, i think you need to set permission first before you can delete a system file.
so make sure you set permission first so you can do changes in your system file.

Titanium Backup app is free in google store and very usefull.. and regarding deleting or editing a system file, you need to set permission to do that, you can try to use Es file manager for that.

Is not necessary to change permissions in /system/app folder, the only you need is to mount /system partition as R/W to delete or modify whatever you want, use root explorer (e.g.) to do it, because /system apps have the 644 permissions (THE ROOT USER IS ALLOWED TO EDIT THIS FILES)
And yes titanum back up is a great tool, but all GB apps won't work properly in CM roms so sometimes to restore apps using TB is really painful, you can find at Google Playstore similar apps as ThinkFree even the same app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tf.thinkdroid.amlite so be careful with TB

There is no reference, just instal TB and do it deleting data (TB can also clean your cache and dalvik-cache partition even backup your apks and data) or use a filebrowser as root explorer go to /system/app, mount it as R/W and delete what you want, be careful with apps as SystemUI, Statusbar, Phone, Contacts, etc
well you could have a look at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1542749

I've seen references tot Titanium Backup. As I understand it, you can compare it to the 'uninstall software' in the Windows settings on a normal computer.
I use 'Total commander' as file explorer, I don't know if this does the same as 'Root explorer', but it does have root rights.
What's the difference between CWM and Titanium Backup. I read that I should make a backup using CWM. But after some research, I now see that I have to use TB aswell to make a backup. All in all a bit confusing.

CWM can backup your whole rom with all you user data(includes all your apps!), etc.
TB can only backup apps
Now you could think: When CWM backups the rom and my data + apps why I need TB?
The answer is that you can only restore the full rom in CWM. You can restore single apps.
In TB you can restore single apps.
You can use any file explorer with root permissions to delete system apps. Idk, but I like Root Explorer, because of its easy usage

well thats my peraonal problem. It encourages me. N I believe it!!
Since u r totally new I would like u to use a slightly different and easier to understand approach.
Its similar to what others hav said but i feel a lot easier for newbies.
Steps.
1. Install ES File Explorer.
2. Go to system/apps.
3. From options click on TOOLS
4. Then click Root Explorer or Root manager Option.
5. You see the option to uninstall system app. Click on it. Long press the app u wana delete. And uninstall.
To reatore apps from previous ROM.
1. Create a backup of that ROM using CWM.
2. Download Nandroid Manager on your new ROM.
3. Click on the Backup File displayed.
4. Restore the apps you want.
I hope this was usefull.

After all of your suggestions, I did some research about deleting system apps and freeing up memory. On a Dutch forum, someone said that if you delete system apps, it doesn't give you space for new apps, because this memory space is reserved.
Can anyone tell me if that is correct, or does the answer form Omega_Warrior really free up memory?
Now I've come across a new item: Bootanimations.
I have found a lot of bootanimations on XDA. Problem is, my Phone has .qmg files, instead of .zip files. Some forums suggest that you can rename the Original files to 'bootsamsung.qmg'.bak' and replace them with the .zip files. Other forums insist that you need the .qmg format, in order to make the bootanimation work.
Which of the comments is true?

Yes if u delete a system App u do free up some space but that space cannot be used by u unless u install an app as a system app... But it still frees up space, reduces background process and in some cases affects performance in positive way.
Regarding Bootanimations .zip files do the trick. Simply download the zip file u want as bootanimation. Rename it as bootanimation.zip. go to system/media and paste it there. Reboot n it's done... This method has been tried by me. N it works. I hav no idea abt the.qmg files u tlkin abt...

Well you can transform useful apps as Operamini or Quickpic as system app using Titanium backup e.g. so you can use this free space as you elwant...
About Bootanimations you need to flash a CUSTOM KERNEL (CF-ROOT, BATTERY EXTENDER,...) to enable this feature and the correct path, if you don't flash it you can't use this path and bootanimation.zips
Be careful with system apps or follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1542749
New ROM
OFF TOPIC
Instead of starting a new topic, I decided to post my question in this topic. Just incase someone else is following the same path as I am.
Back on topic:
I found this ROM review and I'm thinking about installing it to my Galaxy Ace.
Here is the link to the review: http://www.technobuzzing.com/sgs-ii-v11-2-samsung-galaxy-ace-custom-rom/
These are the steps I intend to follow:
Create a backup of all my personal files.
Use Titanium backup and CWM to backup the Phone itself.
Next steps:
Boot into CWM
Choose 'wipe data/factory reset'.
Choose 'Wipe cache'.
Choose 'Advanced' and 'wipe dalvik cache'.
'Install zip from SD-card'.
If I left any safety precautions out, or missed a step, please tell me.
Anyone who has this ROM installed, feel free to share your comments on this ROM.
@Omega Warrior: The QMG files for the bootanimations are aparently a Samsung thing.
Thanks for any reactions.

You are in the correct way
The most important a CWM backup just in case something goes wrong and you'll need to go back so perfect!
I used this rom, IMO all SpaceCaker works are amazing. He is one of the best themer we have
About QMG files, yes only stock or mainly stock roms have QMG files as bootanimation. Custom roms always or almost always have bootanimations in .zip files, this is allowed due to the custom kernels that support this kind of tweaks, so custom rom = custom bootanimation.zip (mainly)

So you're saying "go ahead and good luck"?
Because if it goes wrong... my backup Phone is a Nokia 3510. The type that asks "share by sms or smoke signal?".:fingers-crossed:

well I'm not forcing you xDDD, but there isn't other way to do it so if you have the GT-S5830 model, there shouldn't be problem
And yes CWM backup works fine and is the best thing you can do before flashing nothing just in case something goes wrong
So good luck and preparing the fire for smoke signals!! (joke ) XDDD
