Very broken captivate.. Internal damage? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just bought a used cappy, dropped it an cracked screen. Launched it at my wall. The screen turned to goo, lol. Point of impact was almlst squarely on the bottom of phone. Nothing other than the screen seems damaged. Think there may be some internal damage or ... Or?

well there is always a possibility that it is now trash. U might try to connect thru adb and see if it connects. That's all I can think of.

I see thank you. Any chance adb has a way to run diagnostic tests? I suppose if I could work with adb Its safe to assume none of the /neural/ connections arent broken. My concern is mainly the sensors.

Well if you can access SGS tools, there is a diagnosis option for all the sensors and Keys. You may wanna check it out

This includes vibrator, proximity, touchscreen, GPS, bluetooth, Wifi.. Another testing mode is *#0*#

You guys are lifesavers. Next chance I get to fool with it ill post results.
Thanks!

Ooooook, were in for a long one.
So, I got my screen in yesterday, installed, everythings works like a charm. Exceeept, any service. (edit: proximity in sgs does nothing.) Screen came with whole, intact front housing. Just switched mobo, back housing, battery and door over.
I have flashed and reflashed to no avail and im certain ill find grey hairs when I wake up. ODIN barely worked for me.. 3 click gave me kernal error and 1 click is eeeextremely tempermental on this captivate. I literally have been researching/trying to flash for 12+ hours.
Finally stable running andromeda 2.1 - thank you jesus
No service on stock nor andromeda 2.1
Info..info.. Hmm where to start..
When runnin sgs tools:
-I CANNOT see my IMEI (null/null)
-Most buttons take me to service mode (right hardkey. Back use menu)
-In pda/phone/cnc- phone and cnc are unknown. Pda is i9010xxjl1
I feel like I am missing something here.. Maybe its my body telling me bedtime was 9 hours ago.
Thanks for readin guys.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App

Edit: csc not cnc lol
So, im googling and forum searching and I find that older posts talk of also downloading the phone tar and csc tar. All of which are older an I donthink any go along w my current kernal? Sheesh I jus wanna go to bed lol

Dumb questions are easier to answer... besides, not much hope for a physically damaged phone. : /

Im jus feelin, that it doesnt really require an intuitive leap or anything. Its either from bad flashing or a replacable part. I can figure this out, im juss asking about what im havin a hard time finding myself.-the csc and phone, if it has anything to do with not getting service, or not being able to read my imei from sgs.
Could someone load sgs-pda/phone/csc version- an verify csc an phone? Surely you can see your imei?
And
For the repairmen, got an idea if its the mobo or card reader board?
I wanna fix this, its fun.

Should I exchange it?

Like alot of people said in other posts I am experiencing not being able to get into recovery mode via the 3 button combo.when it comes to rooting I was wondering how important it was. I'm new to android and unless I'm not mistaken, there are other methods to rooting.however I'm more concerned if something goes wrong, I want to make sure I can get things back to normal and not be bricked. Also, when the froyo update comes out I'm going to want to revert to stock. To people who are experienced at rooting, how necessary is it. If it is I will return it, but I'm worried the one I will get will have gps issues and so far mine has been lucky enough to have gps work almost flawlessly.

GPS won't be flawless for long, it is flakey, known everywhere. It works sometimes and dosen't others.

i personally dont know how necessary it is but, all i know is you can side load apps like roms so u can play the emulators they have such as sega genesis and what not. also you will be able to get the apps we normally cant get in the android market such as: super mario wallpaper, tethering, and many other 3rd party apps that are available that we cannot get. i dont know all of them. but comming from a jailbroken iphone jailbreaking the captivate is way more difficult. android is not as user friendly when it comes to the technical geek stuff. my captivate is a week old now
but i think you should wait on the froyo then wait to see if they come out with a one click root method for 2.2, which they probally will. i was close to rooting mine but it seems a little bothersome to convert it back to stock. so i would just hold off till froyo
Yea, I'm just thinking I should than exchange my cappy for one that will go into recovery mode via the button combo.I'm not very experienced in rooting but from what I understand if you can't you have more of a chance in bricking the phone. Not sure though.

I didnt brick my phone while root. I accidentally pulled the battery when my phone was rebooting from removing the lag fix.
As of right now, there are many root methods provided and all of them work flawlessly (provided you follow directions).

Nope, not worth s shot, if you can't boot into recovery, how do you plan to apply the root, you need recovery mode for this. Unless you plan to use ADB everytime. Eventually your phone will brick without being able to use the key combo method. To me it isn't worth taking the chance.

get a new one. i just replaced mine for a new one. took me going to 3 different stores trying a total of 9 captivates to find one that the 3 buttons worked. you will NEED that if you get bricked. i would HIGHLY suggest not flashing anything unless you do it. if you have any other questions feel free to pm me, i can give you my speech i gave.
best of luck sir!

i stood there, told me the store manager i would like to keep trying the other phones. since a sim card is not needed for the phone to boot to recovery it will not void their "warrenty pre sim card"

Yea I guess I should exchange it. Hopefully it won't take abunch of phones to get one that will, and if it does, hopefully they will let me test til I get it right. Anyone know if this is just something samsung just started on later date phones that were made to stop people from trying to root? I'm not sure how phone companies view phone rooting.

Yes, definitely exchange your phone. Also, I would test this function in store until you get one that works. From what I have read, it seems like there was a bunch of phone made during the week of 8-10-2010 thru about 8-14-2010 that had a hardware defect. There's another thread in the boards somewhere that people who can't use 3 button recovery post their build dates, and all so far fell into that build week.
I wouldn't even begin to mod my phone if I didn't have access to recovery or download mode by using buttons. If you rely on adb you are out of luck if you soft brick it.
Of course I'm going to try to test in store. How do I check the news manufacturing date?

Wow, that falls into the date range of the others I've seen.
So ive now returned that faulty cappy, and have one that will goto into recovery mode. Although, the gps definitely, seems as if it won't even get a fix. Oh well I guess if the problem is software ill wait for the update. Also it could be me, but it definitely seems more laggy then before, especially the back button.

Yep, gps is mostly broken right now.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

Is my gps totally broken?

I see people say that their gps locks in bla bla but my gps in maps or navigation can never find my location even when i had cognition installed, now im runing stock 2.1 update 1. Is it like this for everybody? Can the gps in my phone be broken. I use gps alot and sometimes i depend on it but it just wont find my location!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I would run the *#*#14723658#*#* (or whatever it is) and test it outside. Mine got a lock there in 7 seconds, at least telling me it "worked" enough to trust that it wasn't a hardware issue needing a swap-out. I still have never had it work within Maps or Navigation.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
welcome to the debate that goes on and on my friend. in all seriousness though ive had 3 different cappy's and this latest one is miles above the rest on the gps issue. i lock in 10-30 seconds, it finds me in nav and even WORKS correctly in nav. this current cappy is the only one that has worked this well just as it was stock out of the box. You can either mess with it or play the exchange lottery...you never know what you might get *hope for perfect gps, no shutdowns, no blue tint on screen*
you can also try a few fixes and change supl settings *it worked 'ok' on my 2nd one changing the setting* but MY personal verdict like most is just return it
Well the thing is i brought it off craigslist so i cant return it
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I'm not trying to rub it in, but after having three of them, the Cappy is probably the last phone I'd ever buy off Craigslist. But I wouldn't have known that before I went through so many replacements.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I never knew cappy had so many problems. I renewed my contract to and git the iphone 4 than sold it and brought this one. Any how im happy with this phone more than i was with the phone. I just just want the gps fixed or test it too see if the gps anteena is broken

Great news!!! I DID TOOO!. listen just tell them it was a gift that was bought in store or something like that. you will NOT be able to trade in store for the first 30 days unless they gave you a recipt. after the 30 day period you CAN exchange through the mail. This is how i have done it everytime they send you a new one and you give the old one back. seems weird but these phones have a 1 year warranty regardless. GOOD LUCK!
Exchange with who? Att or samsung and do i need to have the insurance on my account?

you will need to troubleshoot the phone with ATT warranty support over the phone. i havent turned on in for GPS issues *but have recieved a phone that fixed the issue* so im sure there will be testing.. once they determine they cant fix it and your dissatisfied they will get you setup for a new one. YOU WILL have to agree that if your current one has hardware damage *screen cracks, water, battery pins* upon being sent it they can charge you for the brand new one they sent you.

Captivated Brick Question

So I think my phone may be dead. I decided to Odin 1-click to Eclair from Cognition beta 1. My phone started, made it to rfs and then froze. The phone will not boot, recognize usb, charge, anything.
Does Eclair one click flash primary and secondary bootloaders? I know without them ordering a jig is useless. I have an upgrade and I can get a new phone but I would much rather fix my captivate. Any help guys?

I have odin'd back to stock from Cog 5 without problem but if you used the odin with the three button fix, you are screwed. the 3 button fix odin will mix bootloaders since it only loads one froyo/eclair bootloader.

Alright, I finally have time to sit at the computer.
The phone was running Cognition 5Beta1.
I did not use ODIN 1-click. I used ODIN3 v1.0, placed pit.pit in the pit, placed PDA in the PDA, Connected the phone and held the vol bumper. Phone booted into download and connected as COM4. (JF7 software) I clicked start, the phone made it all the way to RFS, the green bar made it approx 20% across and then the bump, the progress bar froze and would not continue any further. Now phone will not respond to any button. However, the battery was warm when I left it on the charger all night.
Doesn't the phone need the primary bootloader for charging?
I made the $1 JIG and failed. I do not have steady hands though. I'm pretty sure the phone needs JTAG but just wanted to sit and type everything out to make sure. I figured if sbl.bin completed that I would have a bootloader.
To answer my own question, my phone now has mismatched bootloaders and needs JTAG. Looks like it will be sent off soon.

Yeah That happened to me. Had GB loaders and went back to stock using JF6 secure. However I checked for an OTA update and there was one. So being the experimental type I downloaded it and while it was installing it failed halfway and complete Brick.....I realized soon afterwards my mistake. A few days and $50 later MobileTech sent me back a stock fixed device. Well worth it.
Last night I tried to use ODIN 3 1.3 to go back to stock out of a bootloop and since I have a new model captivate it doesn't play nice with 1.3. Got the infamous blackout. Thought I bricked again but soon after the phone-PC image appeared and I knew there was hope.
Used the JIG and ODIN3 1.8
to flash stock and reflashed my ROM.
Looking for an alternative to Continuum. seems to get laggy after a week or so. With an SGS 2 on the way I may go back to Froyo on this one or COG beta 5

Are you sure? Read AdamOutler's thread on the one click unbrick. Its possible you trashed a different file that is causing the black screen.

I tried the one click unbrick. Adam is doing some awesome work there. It will help a lot of people. Unfortunately, I was not one of them.
I looked at the flashing order and traced to where my flash failed. I only flashed one bootloader. A gingerbread/eclair mix doesn't boot, Haha.
It was also a pleasure talking to you as well. I've also decided one thing, I'm ditching this Atrix when my Captivate is fixed. It's a really awesome phone but I can't stand not having an AMOLED. Looks like I'll be waiting on the Galaxy S II to make it over.

It may sound silly, but i encountered the same problem today.
Disconnected my usb when working with odin and got permanently bricked.
Phone did not turn on, no indicator of charging, freaked out..
All i did was kept my mobile for charging for 20 mins even though it did not display that battery bar, disconnected from power supply, took out sim, ext sd, and removed the battery for 1 min and put it back and tried out the two button download mode, and done, my phone went into download mode, and then recovered everything back..
I know it sounds silly, but maybe of some help...

[Q] help me! broken cappy

hello
a friend of mine decided to go swimming with his cappy in his pocket, i let it sit for about a month now i just tried turning it on and it just sits at the att boot screen. i can not get to recovery but i can still access download mod. i flashed jf6 stock back onto it. and still sits on the att boot screen... what do i need to buy to get this working again?? thanks in avance
man, if its water damaged, i really doubt it can be saved, but it sounds like its the kernel based on what very little i know.
General rule of thumb:
large amounts of water+delicate electronics=bad news.
Sorry to say I think your friends device is toast

if u r a techie then try to open the phone and clen the mother board and blow some hot air using hair drier...
or if u not a techie then put the phone in jar full of rice...and leave it for a day or 2..and try reflashin..
coz u mentioned that u can get into recovery and odin is recognizin ur phone when u tried flashin to stock..so seems that some issue with internal sd connectivity because of water..
If there's moisture on the screen still you can try what Killer_raj said to try and dry it out, if it's all dry then what Kanji26 said is most likely the case and your friend has a new dive toy for the kids to fetch off the bottom of the pool.
If its been sitting with water damage for a month...probably corrosion has gotten to it.

Well....this is what i did guys. I opened phone up and took everything apart and had quite a bit of corrosion.took rubbing alcohol and q-tips and cleaned everything up the best i could hoping the alcohol would evaporate any water left. Put everything back together and fired phone up and bam went straight into recovery.shut phone off download mode and flashed a kernel with cwm and flashed apex 9.2 . Screen is fine with no moisture only problem is when i enable wifi i get a soft reboot but everything else works.

glad to hear that all worked out. i was going to post the other day that you may just need to clean the phone again as there may still be corrosion but you got it. And i will also be adding swimming to a list of things the cappy can do just to irritate people that pick on my poor phone
And...... The wifi stopped working again i think the wifi is just shot. Ive tried a bunch of different kernels and roms the wifi just errors out after scanning for 20+ seconds. Thoughts??

Dropped, yes, 2hrs after I first bought it over a year ago. But this has recently started happening, like yesterday and today. I am rooted but not rom-ed (hu, I said rom-ed). I'm too scared to change rom's cause I'm still researching how to do it.
Now I'm so broke i can't even pay attention!
Hmm.. well I would try flashing the open zip rom and see what that does for ya...its not hard to do that, maybe that will help. Other than that i dunno. I've done some tweeking on the open zip rom for my girlfriend and daughter, haven't done any theming for it besides some uot kitchen work, but have been able to apply alot of various build. prop tweeks and some other tweeks that seemed to help with battery life.

There mostly from developer KNZO, he's got a list of build.prop and init.d tweaks.. he's done alot of developing for the optimus p500, I think he's developing for the optimus black now...anyways, most of his tweaks are now standard for custom roms for the p500&p509.. so i tryed to incorporate them into the Sanyo zio.
