Is there any way we could reflash the entire phone with official firmware, without the use of Odin/Heimdall (or any unofficial way). I liked the idea of iTunes where I can restore my device whenever I want.
KIES seems to have emergency firmware recovery, which I don't know how to artificially trigger it to work.

That is interesting. Thanks!
I am having KIES v2, I assume downgrade is necessary?

Dont really know about the downgrade .
I used Kies patcher to grab a copy of my networks Froyo update as a saved rom i have flashed it with Odin but not Kies .

Can someone help me find stock 2.1 firmware that comes with t-mobile galaxy s in croatia?
I wanna keep it in backup if I will need to use warranty so I can flash it back to original state.
If you have not backed it up you will have to find somebody with a copy .

I didn't back it up. But if you know how to backup tell me so I can backup my current 2.2 version that is also original.

So it cannot be done?
"6.I want to install new firmware but I want to have a backup of my original firmware to go back to in case I need to go back for warranty reasons. Can I backup my original firmware somehow?
As of now, there is no way of backing up firmware entirely. However, there are firmwares out for every region and virtually all regions have received a 2.2 or 2.2.1 upgrade which can be applied through Kies or Odin."
It is possible, but tedious. How I would do it:
Use Kies patcher 1.7.0.0 to spoof your device back to 2.1.
Assuming spoof is successful, after downloading is completed and begin to flash your phone, click on the Kies patcher where there is an option to let you save the tar file. That tar file will be your backup.
If you want to get back to stock, use odin to flash. For more details, search for the thread on Kies patcher in the forum.

That method is the one i use as well as it gives a full rom but it is a long winded way of backing up original .

I looked there but there's a lot of firmwares and I can't figure out which firmware is for me.
According to the Kies Registry Patcher, 'CRO' is linked to this firmware...
I9000BOJI1/I9000CROJI1/I9000BOJF1/I9000BOJI1
Here is a link to JF1 from SamFirmware.com

Thank you very much. I'm downloading that so it will be my backup in case I need waranty.
Best regars!

Those are merely product codes for different networks, I too would suggest that you use Kies 1.5 and use Kies registry patcher to spoof product code for CRO/VIP and it should provide latest official firmware for those codes.
Other way is to manually download fw via samfirmware.com and flash it via ODIN.

That is not your network branded firmware .

Let's say I installed Ultimate ROM v8.2 on my SGS. Can I still upgrade to the official Gingerbread once Samsung released it thru Kies?
Most likely not. Kies will check to see if you have the stock rom, modem and CSC for your provider (not kernel, however)...if not, it will say you can't be upgraded.
Therefore, revert to stock once you KNOW the update is available, or take a nandroid backup of your stock rom before flashing Ultimate.
Or forget Kies and just download a stock 2.3.3 rom from XDA, flash it, then install one of the rising crop of Gingerbread ROMs available here.
Thanks for the prompt response rschenck.
Cant update your through kies but it will be released on samfirmware.com so you will be able to flash via odin

You need to use the spoof Kies thread method if that still works .
If you have backed up your original firmware you can reinstall that .
Or just wait for a full working 2.3 with all the add on in rom kitchin and flash that .

Hi.. I want to keep the apps/data/msg etc on the phone, can I flash the official branded firmware through Odin without it wiping the phone?
I'm sick and tired of Kies f**king me over, it offers an update but FirmwareUpdate crashes whilst downloading the update (tried on Win7 and XP, multiple cables, reinstalls etc)
Kies is offering me the JVH update.. I'm on JP6 (2.2) and am rooted through SuperOneClick and have flashed the Speedmod Froyo kernel, undone lagfix
I'm guessing this should be possible as I have updated to JP5 and then JP6 through Kies in the past and all the data was preserved.

Every firmware will you flash via odin....everysingle one will wipe all your data... There are some cases when it won't but after flashing you'll get FC of all your apps...
If you're running a lagfix you must deactivate it when you want toinsstall a 1 file firmware If you want to flash a 3 file firmware you shouldn;t care about it
yes, the ROM wipes PERSONAL data, like messages, phone book and so on,,,but NOT the SD card, so basiccaly if you back up these data via Titanium back up, the back up folder will be stored on the SD and will remain.
Your data is wiped but sdcard isnt

Thanks guys for the replies, knew it was a good idea to ask before I found out the hard way!
Guess I'll just wait until Samsung fix that p.o.s. Kies
Might be a good time to come over to custom roms and f**k kies off for good!

There is titanium backup, but don't backup system apps. Use sms backup&restore app to backup messages, it works from 2.1-2.3.4

flashing firmware with odin will format only data. not sd card. do a nandroid backup before you flash.

Personally, if it were my phone I would have backed up the important stuff and update through Odin but it's my gf's phone and she doesn't want me messing up her homescreen/msgs/contacts/settings/apps etc..
I ended up emailing and *****ing to Samsung about Kies and they've suggested I take the phone down to one of their Service Centres and let them deal with it, might try that out.
Hi everyone,
I used custom roms for a long time and after that i decided to upgrade original samsung rom via kies. so i downloaded turkish rom from samfirmware.com and now i connect to kies and it says this device is not official samsung device and doesnt upgrade my samsung in the past there was method called spoof kies however it doesnt work with latest kies?
so how can i upgrade the official rom?
Just download right firmware from samfirmware.com and flash it via Odin.
It is that simple. Kies is ****
Why are you using kies? I used kies once when I first got my SGS and it almost screwed my phone up. Its a known fact that kies is crap, stick to odin and CWM

Just find out one of the previous ROMS that was officially available for your country or region. Flash that ROM via Odin. Then, you should be able to connect to Kies and update without any problems.

The newer versions of Kies are better now. Also, the advantage of using Kies to update is that your data isn't wiped.

...and you can't backup all data + apps +++ you wish to save and restore later...?
You can always try Kies again and again, but I stongly recommend Odin method.
With Odin, I'm quite sure you won't get bad headache

Well, you can back everything up with apps like Titanium Backup, but certain apps won't work properly after restoration, especially games. Fruit Ninja, for example, will no longer be able to save new high scores after restoration, and gameloft games don't work at all after restoration. Upgrading by Kies avoids these problems. But I guess that if you don't play games that much, Odin is the better choice. However, restoring apps takes up some time, while using Kies is faster.
Hi All,
Quick bit of advice, Failing on the OTA update at the moment,
I'm running;
- Android: 4.0.3
- Baseband: N7000XXLPT
- Build: IML74K.XXLQ2
Wondering if it's the fact I am running SpeedMod K3-11 which is why it's failing? Anyone else seeing this?
If so - wondering if I can reflash the stock kernel via Mobile Odin...
I have the ROM - N7000XXLQ2_N7000XXLPT_N7000CPWLP4_HOME.tar.md5 file - Is it the case that I extract the ZImage from this file to obtain the Stock ROM Kernel?
As stated here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371007
Note: I upgraded to this current version of ICS OTA - I DID NOT flash the above file via PC Odin.
I know I could get around it by reflashing in PC Odin but I'd like to not have to go that route..
Cheers
I was facing the same problem with OTA update on my stock rooted speedmod loaded Note. I thought the custom kernel is preventing the process. So my way was to flash the whole stock rom via PC Odin. Good thing it was a non-wipe version.
And yes, the zImage you pull from the rom is the stock kernel.
Cheers,
Not sure what's up with OTA..
However think the PC KIES issue is due to the fact that once again my PC seems to have lost the drivers needed to recognise the device in Download mode..... FFS...
Conditions for kies:
Need pcode, need csc and all stock components belonging to same rom, so all stock of same rom version. No root.
Never I have read kies updated a phone if with a rom for csc a, when wanting to uodating to another csc rom, bu just changing csc.
Ota can update a rooted phone as long as components again belong to one version of stock rom. Cf kernel of that rom no, the true kernel belonging to that rom with onky root yes. Ota also succeeds without pcode, most of the time.
Another condition is intact emei, which together with pcode can be secured by flashing efs backup, but you need proper backuo then.
You can midfy pcode by hex editing certain efs files, but it most of the time to tricky to achieve. You cannot edit emei that way. So make a proper efs backup
Edit: in the end efs backup and pc odin is all you need nd a safe kernel to be able to cleanse your installation should you wish to use different version and different csc. Then again changing csc triggers reset so onky change on safe kernel
Use this knowledge wisely

Cheers Baz,
So in effect as I'm running a stock ROM I'd need to flash the stock kernel zimage extracted from the ROM in order to update...
Or, backup everything, flash the new stock in Odin and restore my stuff...
Or finally flash GB, wipes, OTA / KIES update...
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, the first should work
Otherwise go back indeed to gb.
Note I havent figured another variable out, on one stock rom version I wsnt able to ota, but going back version earlier I was.
Not sure what it was.
In the end, just pc oding it is faster

Yep seems PC ODIN is the best way, just didn't wanna have to set everything back up again..
