B&N got shipments in today, it was the first shipment after the 2 week delay message and all the rumors of lock downs.
I bought one and it appears on the outside that it has no sticker or anything to make me thinking it has a newer modified bootloader but before i open the box i want to make sure all the nooks that came in today arent modified?
Also, is there anything that should be done when i first get it besides registered a b&n account if i plan on rooting, loading froyo or honeycomb etc? I want to make sure i dont boot it up for the first time and all of a sudden it downloads some new update and locks it down or something.
there is so much happening with this device on a daily basis on all the sites, i cant keep up with it all, it appears autonook 3.0.0 after flashing 1.1.0 is my best bet ?
thanks again guys.
Thats what I have been told autonook 3.0.0
bought the wife a NC on saturday. all bestbuy's around the KC area were out of stock but the B&N by us had a bunch so we picked it up. it came loaded with version 1.0.0 and has yet to autoupdate. ill probably update it to 1.1.0 today or tomorrow. i mentioned rooting to her and what it does and now she wants it done. ive been reading up on that and it seems relatively simple.

I would burn a honeycomb or nookie froyo sd card. Then open the box, put in the sd card and turn it on. If it boots into one of those roms you should be able to root it
@cray. I got a Nook Color from a brand new BN shipment yesterday too. It came with 1.0.1 already installed.
These are the steps I like to follow:
1) register it with BN
2) turn off wireless ASAP after OOBE (out of the box experience) finishes
3) download updates from BN.com using my computer and install by sideloading onto NC (i didn't bother since i am fine with 1.0.1)
4) turn off NC, insert microSD and proceed to with autonooter rooting process
5) enable ADB (optional)
6) change OTA updates to manual
After that you're free to do whatever because your NC is registered and rooted.
If you're careful about turning wifi off when you are done playing with it, you shouldn't get any of the OTA updates. You can also flash a zip that will block OTA for 1.1 if you don't want to run on that version.
I have seen posts that with Autonooter 3.0 you can't install CWR (Clockworkmod Recovery), which makes it harder to apply the overclocking kernels if you were planning to do that. Or any other modifications that uses CWR. I would personally go to 1.0.1 (if you're not already out of the box) and apply Autonooter 2.12.25 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872490). Then apply Decad3nce's V1.1.0_r2 ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932145). This route takes more time but maximizes the potential of the NOOKcolor.

I bought the Nook Color while visiting Boston few weeks ago and activated it in some random Apple store (free wifi!)
Now I'm wondering, if I ever need to activate it again while not in the US, are there any workarounds? or can it be activated from anywhere?
I activated mine from Hong Kong, no issues. afaik you don't have to be in the USA to activate it, the only thing about the NC is that you have to be in the States to buy books from B&N (and that is only IP-wise too) and go on Pandora.

Ok good to know
One more question, when I load my own epubs to the nook, they show up in all the right places except for the home screen, there are only the b&n books, any way to get my own epubs there?
Activated in Spain with no problems. The only issue is you can't buy anything out of USA.
Yeah it works. I still hope someone here finds a way to circumvent the activation / registration process. Nobody knows how much the nook is phoning home to B&N.
Also, some versions of the classic nook firmware forced registration like the nc, and B&N filtered non US IP addressss...
Their TOS allow them to disable your device by deactivating your account. So if our NOOKs for instance send back lists of installed apps, B&N would know that we rooted (went against their TOS) and could deregister our device ... yeah, all this might not be a big deal since accounts can be easily created again, but that again might change.
that's a great news, I order my NC today, but I live in france.
Is there a way to root before registering?
Yeah, I believe for our rooting method it doesn't matter when we do it.
Now, even if you are rooted you'd have to know which files to change so that the registration Wizard doesn't come up. Maybe you could just kill the process of the wizard via adb, but you might have to do this at every boot and maybe the wizard is part of some larger app, like the DeviceManager.apk that has to run in the background all the time.
You can test and unregister, then register again via the menus. So maybe analyzing the data partition's differences in between could help us find the important files.
On a registered device I already tested deleting /data/system/accounts.db, which caused my name etc. to disappear from he device info. Still the wizard did not come up again, and I believe there must be another place where the nook saves a account ID or at least a bit that says, "wizard is finished". I also tried to delete the data directory for the device manager. This simply caused a notification to appear at reboot, that my device has been updated. (Of course it hasn't been updated). Still no wizard to be seen and root was left untouched.
Hi
My Nook is rooted and is great. However I'm needing to deregister it so the new owner can use it.
Whats the best way to do this? I'm not 100% sure I actually have the B&N password as I'll never order from them being in the UK.

So I just recived my new nook color. Problem being, I'm downrange in Afghanistan, all I have is military network / no wifi. Any suggestions to skip the setup entirely so I can use my nook?
Otherwise I think it's going to sit around until I get back to the states in August.
I do have a personal laptop, I could download files burn to cd, move to my personal laptop and root the nook.. but only if it could root a stock nook. model no bnrv200
Any suggestions for my rather unique prediciment?
You should be able to skip the B&N setup entirely by following the steps for Auto-Nooter. You will have to update to 1.0.1 of the B&N firmware by downloading it from their site and loading it on to the internal memory. Once that has applied(just be patient, stare at it for 10 minutes until it does its thing), you can use a micro SD card loaded up with AutoNooter 2.2.18+ to gain root access, unlock the setup screen, etc. You will have to skip steps 10 and up - just leave the thing not signed in. I don't know if the B&N apps will throw a fit about not being signed in, but my hunch says you should get a working system out of it.
Stay safe!

Yeah, that's sorta what I was thinking / hoping would work. I'll post some details of how I am able to get it up. (if I am able to get it up)
thanks
worked for me with auto-nooter, i never set up the b&n crap!

sweet, good to hear.. now if only it didn't take me a day to download.. and have it fail once already... someday, maybe by xmass i'll get it downloaded and be able to use it...
Is there any reason to register your Nook with B&N other then purchasing book to read on it?
I picked up a Nook a couple days ago and immediately used Nookie and Honeycomb from the SDCard. I've only booted and seen the intro video/setup once but never completed the setup.
I'm still not sure if I ever really plan on using the Nook with it's base software. I'll most likely flash the internal memory when the Honeycomb official source comes out and things get real stable.
I can't imagine that not registering will effect anything, but I just want to make sure I'm not overlooking something. I don't want it to bite me in the ass down the road.
I mainly want to make sure if I ever do boot into the stock setup that it doesn't auto update in the future and possibly complicate rooting the device.
Gonna bump this one up instead of creating my own. Tried searching, but there's so many threads about registering, I couldn't find anything about not registering, aside from this single thread. I also come from SD Froyo, where there's no registration, and don't care about anything having to do with B&N aside from the hardware itself. From some of the "lost registration" threads, all we lose is access to the B&N library/store, is that all? Considering finally moving over to CM7 flashed directly to the NC.
if youre not on stock rom, registering is useless!
That's what I thought, even though most of the builds still warn you to register before flashing. Like the CM7 guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227

That is only so you could use B&N market for buying books... etc.
The following has happened with both autonootered 1.1 and stock 1.2. I am running CM7.0.2 from an sd card also. Using a dual boot (manual button(s)) press.
For the second time, I have gone to a local B&N, gotten my Cafe Vanilla Frappicino, found a comfortable seat, booted up into the BN software, chose "Read In Store" for "Discovery of Witches" watched the book d/l and then immediately get the message that I have exceeded the time allotment for that day and to try again the next day!
This happened (with this title) under AN3.0/BN1.1 and again today with stock 1.2. My e-mail in/out worked fine when store connected as did all othere store related items. This tells me the connection was not the issue.
I found the knowledgeable rep in the store who I had discussed things with before and we tried to get it ("Discovery...") to re-load (unsuccessfully), rebooted several times and even rebootted with the sd card removed. That last time the title did reload but still came up with the "expired time" message. We picked another title at random and that had no problems!
The rep called the Corporate IT, explained the issue, gave them my unit's s/n and verified that there were no server related issues at that time.
I verified with him that there were no B&N "roadblocks" in place that prevent you from on-going reading of the same title which he stated there was not based on his own usage/experience. Example, The second time I opened that title in the store, it took me directly to where I had previously left off!
One of the reasons I haven't redone my internal memory to CM7+ is that I want to retain the in-store reading capability but this is really becoming a major annoyance.
I have two other local BN's where I will try and access this specific title early this week to see if history continues to repeat itself.
Any ideas/thoughts as to what the root cause is and any possible solutions???
I recommend just doing a Factory Reset.
Follow Steps 1-Method 1 and 2-Method 1
http://nookdevs.com/Flash_back_to_clean_stock_ROM
You have to do both steps!
I had to do this in order to install 1.2 even though I've never Rooted my Nook(Running CM7 from SD)

Hi.
I did some searching and didnt feel like I really found the answer to what Im trying to do... so i thought Id create this quick post.
I have a Rooted NC with ver 1.1 still on it. Back about a year ago when everyone was really getting into this ( along with my co-workers) I was able to get exactly where I wanted, which was to have my NC be rooted to get the full market but still have the ability to take my NC to a B&N store and have the in store features, like the reading for free for an hour. So after I got that how I wanted it I fell out of the loop and have been happy, well since last night. I decided to try to load the Netflix app and kept getting the Parse error, then i found out that the Netflix app does not run in 1.1. So, my question is.. What do i need to do to upgrade to the next ver ( or most recent version, whatever that is called?) to be able to have Netflix running. I do remember my coworker having Gingerbread loaded on a SD Card and didnt think that was where i wanted to be, but if that's what i have to do then so be it.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Aaron
