[Q] In-Store Reading Issue - Nook Color General

The following has happened with both autonootered 1.1 and stock 1.2. I am running CM7.0.2 from an sd card also. Using a dual boot (manual button(s)) press.
For the second time, I have gone to a local B&N, gotten my Cafe Vanilla Frappicino, found a comfortable seat, booted up into the BN software, chose "Read In Store" for "Discovery of Witches" watched the book d/l and then immediately get the message that I have exceeded the time allotment for that day and to try again the next day!
This happened (with this title) under AN3.0/BN1.1 and again today with stock 1.2. My e-mail in/out worked fine when store connected as did all othere store related items. This tells me the connection was not the issue.
I found the knowledgeable rep in the store who I had discussed things with before and we tried to get it ("Discovery...") to re-load (unsuccessfully), rebooted several times and even rebootted with the sd card removed. That last time the title did reload but still came up with the "expired time" message. We picked another title at random and that had no problems!
The rep called the Corporate IT, explained the issue, gave them my unit's s/n and verified that there were no server related issues at that time.
I verified with him that there were no B&N "roadblocks" in place that prevent you from on-going reading of the same title which he stated there was not based on his own usage/experience. Example, The second time I opened that title in the store, it took me directly to where I had previously left off!
One of the reasons I haven't redone my internal memory to CM7+ is that I want to retain the in-store reading capability but this is really becoming a major annoyance.
I have two other local BN's where I will try and access this specific title early this week to see if history continues to repeat itself.
Any ideas/thoughts as to what the root cause is and any possible solutions???

I recommend just doing a Factory Reset.
Follow Steps 1-Method 1 and 2-Method 1

You have to do both steps!
I had to do this in order to install 1.2 even though I've never Rooted my Nook(Running CM7 from SD)

[Q] Rooted NC Market Downloads Won't Start

Hi everyone. I auto rooted my Nook Color yesterday (version 1.0.1). It generally works -- YouTube plays videos and I can access my Gmail account. However, when I go to Market and try to download an app, it says "Starting Download" but never begins or completes the process.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Did you ever find a solution for this?
I'm having the same problem -- in Market, downloads start but then nothing happens. Thanks.
I'm guessing the market has some problems today. Downloads on my Evo are crawling as well.
Same thing happen to me when I first used auto nooter on my nook a few days ago. Powering off the nook (hold power button down till it ask "do you want to power off completely") and rebooting solved the problem for me.
edit:
(i had to cancel the download and restart it also)
I also had this issue after using Autonooter, however the issue was a port on my corporate firewall being blocked. as soon as i jumped on my home wifi connection everything started downloading. I believe the port is mentioned in the autonooter thread somewhere.
I had the same issue, and a hard reboot seemed to do the trick.
I just rooted my NC using the Auto-nooter method, and also had the same issue with the Market, where apps would say "Starting download" but never finish. Reboot did not fix it for me.
I read in one of the threads that the device has to be first set up with a Gmail account. On my first sign-in, I used my YouTube login id. Even though my YT login is linked to my Gmail account, it seems that is not sufficient for the Market to work.
I couldn't find a way to undo/redo the account setup, so I bit the bullet and reset everything back to factory default, then re-rooted. This time I made sure to use my Gmail ID/password when first starting YT. Everything is working fine now, including Market.
Hope this helps.

[Q] "Social" Settings says Invalid Parameter

Hi all,
In the Settings menu, under social, since upgrading to 1.0.1 and rooting, I now get an "invalid parameter!" error. Under 1.0 and root, I did not have this error and was able to link my Google account. Has anyone else had this issue, and if so, what did you do to resolve it.
Thanks
Kim
Having the same issue. +1 to looking for anyone with any knowledge on how to resolve.
I had same issue. I unrooted, did a factory rest and it was still there. I updated firmware...still there. RE-rooted...still there. Un-rooted, called support, and after an hour on the phone following their instructions I was told to return it to the store (within return period).
I have updated firmware and rooted this one with no problem with the Social section under Settings.

Interesting. I also have the same problem in my 1.0.1 rooted version. but I haven't had this problem in my 1.0.0 versions (both stock & rooted) of my NC.
I hope that this will not be a hardware problem...
I just noticed mine is doing the same thing after rooting. Does anyone else experience this problem?

My girlfriend just got off the phone with tech support cause of this problem. Her nook was working awesome after the update but she had to do a factory reset for another issue and when it came back on, thats when she saw invalid parameters. Long story short, they couldnt resolve the issue and they're making her mail her nook back so she can get a new one. Oh and her nook was never rooted so this problem isn't just for the rooted nooks.
+1 worked initially but at some point since rooted 'invalid parameters' is all that appears now.
none of the usual solutions (unroot, reset, wipe, etc) have made a scrap of difference. Maybe a settings file somewhere on the device that doesn't get replaced after reset/wipe which is hard to believe. Only way to find it might be to compare to stock NC with/without the problem.
I haven't noticed any other issues though. Perhaps the problems lies in a cookie or session type ID that is linked to the nook but resides on the servers.
hoping someone smarter than me (not difficult) finds an answer.
Same problem here. Firmware 1.0.1 with autonook. The message will show even after complete format. I called customer support and after 10 minutes the guy told me that his supervisor informed him that several people are calling with the same problem an that the issue will be resolved with an update in the future. I'm going for an exchange anyway.
if anybody has it working on a rooted 1.0.0 or a 1.0.1 version can you use ADB and pull the /data/data/com.bn.nook.social folder and possibly post it up here?
My nc is rooted on 1.0.1 and Social does the error thing, and this is what the above file contains:
databases/
recommendations.db
webview.db
webviewCache.db
No other folders in the main one or anything. I think there should be a shared_prefs folder out there...
Check the files first for any sensitive password info!
- Will.
Mine started doing this after my last reset, so I upped it back to 1.0.1 and it still continued. I figured I did it with the root, but then I asked the guy at the store if he had heard of it. He said that they have had a few complaints about it, and that only a few of the devices with the issue had been rooted. So, it seems it has something to do with the original firmware.
He seems to think that if you setup Social, then reset and deregister, the setting isn't getting cleared (the guy is pretty savvy at our store). He has been keeping an unofficial tally, and said that he will ask others that have the problem if they did the same thing.
I agree, that sounds like the sequence of events that led to it happening for me.
I exchanged my unit about 2 weeks ago, rerooted to 1.0.1 and it still works as of today (knock on wood).
One thing I do remember before the problem, is the fact that I had task manager setup to kill the social app. Maybe this corrupted something inside the file system and led to the problem.

This happened to me, on a rooted Nook Color. This thread fixed it:

NEW Rooted Nook, Problems...?

Ok guys I just bought a NC off Craigslist and it turns out the guy had it rooted already. He left it rooted but removed all his settings. I registered it to me and everything. I get on my wifi and can load webpages, but when I try to signin with my GMAIL stuff in the LogicPD Zoom2 app it just hangs and says it cant find a connection, but im on the net!!
wtf?!?
"this could be a temporary problem or your phone may not be provisioned for data services"
You will need to root it yourself. He registered the Nook to you, rooted it but then did a reset to remove his information. However, this disables Gmail/Market access therefore, you ARE online and able to surf and download books, but you won't be able to access Gmail and Market until you re-root.
one last dumb question, is there a step by step on how to re-root? And install clockwork? I have a droid phone but never did a nook
ummm YEAH
In the forums.....
And no im not being a ****, I`m just too lazy to post a link but want my "senior member thingy"
Besides....there is a search box :duh:
I have a similar issue. Bought a used NC that was rooted. He left his settings in the NC, when I took out the SD card to reregister the NC it is saying "this could be a temporary problem or your phone may not be provisioned for data services". Any ideas, I'd like to be able to use it for both an ereader and tablet.

NEW Shipment - Got Today

B&N got shipments in today, it was the first shipment after the 2 week delay message and all the rumors of lock downs.
I bought one and it appears on the outside that it has no sticker or anything to make me thinking it has a newer modified bootloader but before i open the box i want to make sure all the nooks that came in today arent modified?
Also, is there anything that should be done when i first get it besides registered a b&n account if i plan on rooting, loading froyo or honeycomb etc? I want to make sure i dont boot it up for the first time and all of a sudden it downloads some new update and locks it down or something.
there is so much happening with this device on a daily basis on all the sites, i cant keep up with it all, it appears autonook 3.0.0 after flashing 1.1.0 is my best bet ?
thanks again guys.
Thats what I have been told autonook 3.0.0
bought the wife a NC on saturday. all bestbuy's around the KC area were out of stock but the B&N by us had a bunch so we picked it up. it came loaded with version 1.0.0 and has yet to autoupdate. ill probably update it to 1.1.0 today or tomorrow. i mentioned rooting to her and what it does and now she wants it done. ive been reading up on that and it seems relatively simple.

I would burn a honeycomb or nookie froyo sd card. Then open the box, put in the sd card and turn it on. If it boots into one of those roms you should be able to root it
@cray. I got a Nook Color from a brand new BN shipment yesterday too. It came with 1.0.1 already installed.
These are the steps I like to follow:
1) register it with BN
2) turn off wireless ASAP after OOBE (out of the box experience) finishes
3) download updates from BN.com using my computer and install by sideloading onto NC (i didn't bother since i am fine with 1.0.1)
4) turn off NC, insert microSD and proceed to with autonooter rooting process
5) enable ADB (optional)
6) change OTA updates to manual
After that you're free to do whatever because your NC is registered and rooted.
If you're careful about turning wifi off when you are done playing with it, you shouldn't get any of the OTA updates. You can also flash a zip that will block OTA for 1.1 if you don't want to run on that version.
I have seen posts that with Autonooter 3.0 you can't install CWR (Clockworkmod Recovery), which makes it harder to apply the overclocking kernels if you were planning to do that. Or any other modifications that uses CWR. I would personally go to 1.0.1 (if you're not already out of the box) and apply Autonooter 2.12.25 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872490). Then apply Decad3nce's V1.1.0_r2 ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932145). This route takes more time but maximizes the potential of the NOOKcolor.

Registering a used nook, after rooting

I bought a used nook color off craiglist. First thing I did was root the unit (it was running the latest B&N firmware). So now that that is done and the unit is working well, I would like to maybe register the unit in my name.
It is still registered in the prior owners name, he said that he didn't know how to un-register it and I didn't either at the time. He is moving overseas anyway and all the info the account is linked to is gone anyway, so he was ok with me taking the unit that was registered to him... ANWAY...
So that leaves me in the position I am in now. The unit works and I would like to register it. I know how to do that and all, but since the unit is rooted and running plain (almost) android, will there be any issues with the registration process?
You will have to return to stock and then call up BN and explain your situation and have them transfer registration over to you or if you have contact with the old owner have him deregister it and skip calling BN.

If this post helped you don't forget to say thanks!
The previous owner can deregister going into his BN account through their websites. Under device he can select the nook and deregister. I think you need to reregister it while on stock, not sure if you can register it using just the serial number (under the sd card tab) through bn website. So, maybe you could call bn and tell them that right now youdont haveinternet service and save you the hazzle of returning to stock

Not anymore he can't. He will have to revert to stock, call B&N and explain the issue and hope they will de-register it for him and then register from the device. After that he can re-root.

Yea, you're I try deregistering mine and it says you need to call to do it. You're going to need to go back to stock and call the previous owner, if he is willing to log you in to his account you can deregister from the Nook:
"Deregister your NOOK Color by tapping on the Settings icon in the Quick Nav bar. Tap the "Device Info" menu option, then "Erase & Deregister Device". Tap the "Erase & Deregister Device" button to deregister your NOOK Color. If your NOOK Color is not available and you need to disable account access, please contact customer service toll-free at 1-800-THE-BOOK (843-2665)" From BN website
Good luck
Well here is the situation now. I mistakenly updated some stock apps, one of them being the adobe flash. I think the latest is 10.3. Anyhow, after updating the apps, the unit was fine, but overnight the battery died. Charged it up and now it won't boot.
Come to find out, the update for flash corrupts some units and you get a boot-loop, never fully booting up. I was forced to wipe the entire unit and start again. Its now de-registered (the nook apps). I couldn't not even complete the registration process. I got to the wifi screen and it kept saying "connection error" or something like that. That wifi works fine btw. Luckily for me I found out how to skip the registration process.
Is there any other way to register this now? Is the fact that the unit is rooted causing the error during registration? I can always try and run the oobe again, wether it works or not is to be seen...
Use your bootable SD card, wipe everything and instead of installing the CM7 .zip and gaaps .zip install this and reboot: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30572895/Nook_Color/update-nc-stock-1.3.zip
