Video transfer and playback - Nook Color General

<flamesuit>
OK, I am a self-professed Android n00b and just recently put HC v04 on my Nook (not in FW). What is the right way to transfer music and video to the device such that I can play it back in HC? I can easily transfer files through via the non-rooted Nook USB channel but those files appear to be inaccessible through HC. Is there another way? Thanks.

[Q] Where to copy the images/videos/songs to NC with Honeycomb

Hi,
I've installed my Nook Color with Honeycomb (HC v4 eMMC 2nd).
I've copied few images and videos into the NC (by mounting the 'media' using Nook Color USB Mass Storage utility). But in the gallery nothing is shown and I tried the same with SD card too. In fact I've faced the same problem with Nookie Froyo too.
I came to conclusion that I m copying the files to wrong place (unlike my N900 which reads from any place )
Some one, please help.
Thanks.

Try another way install "file expert" from market, run the application and enable "ftp sharing" and so you can easily connect PC to nook and transfer your files.
Thanks. But can you please tell me where to copy the image/video files? I mean is there any special place where NC Honeycomb looks for media files?
Quite new to the whole thing myself, images belongs to DCIM folder to show up in gallery and I believe for video/mp3 it does'nt matter which folder you choose.

Thanks. In fact I've copied a movie into the media directory. But no luck Any other thoughts...
Fellas,
Am I only one having this problem ? At least confirmation from people for whom it is working fine with Images (I need to try with DCIM), Videos and Songs would be highly appreciated
What are you using to copy the files? Have you check with astro that the files are actually copied? if you are using ums, unmount the drive from the PC beforce choosing unmount on ums.

I don't think the HC rom can see anything written in the folders on EMMC. You can't even navigate to it with Root Explorer because I don't think it's even mounted.
I've switched back and forth between CM7 and HC, and while running CM7 I moved some music from my sdcard to the Music folder in EMMC. When I loaded up HC all of the music disappeared, and only my photos on the sdcard were viewable. Once I flashed back to CM7 all of the music was back.
It was also a test for me to see if the entire internal memory of the nook is wiped using the options in CWR, and apparently all of the files stay intact.
I am having these issues as well. I put a picture in every DCIM folder on the nook. I put it on my micro sd card, and nook media drive. I have unmounted and mounted several times. I have tried music with a folder named music on the root of my sd card and in the nook media drive. I can see it if I go to it in root explorer, and actually play it from there, but nothing will show in my gallery or music player. Any help is greatly appreciated.
ROM - nookie comb
Thanks you all for your inputs.
Initially I've tried with CM7 only. Might be I've some thing wrong... I'll try with it again..
If the issue is originally present with HC rom, though disappointed, but still okay with it as I can be sure that i m not missing something

Hint
After long gap I think I see the problem now. When I copied images to NC (mounted using UMC app and ejected from system and then unmounted in UMC), the media scanner seems not seeing the updates or it is sleeping. If I restart the NC, then images were shown in the Gallery app.
Is there any setting or tip to make the scanner look for the update?
Will Nook version of Cyanogenmod or any Android 2.3 firmware release does the task well?

Android by Default rescans for Media at every Boot. If you want there are Apps to Manually scan.
Search the Market for "Rescan Media ROOT" it will Manually force Scan you're device and can disable scan on boot if you want to speed up boot.
Also I recommend getting "StudioKUMA" as it allows you to easily Blacklist folders which you don't want scanned.

Thanks. Does it mean when ever we copy some new media (be it images/songs/videos), we manually need to initiate the scanning. (asking again because my Nokia N900 will show the new stuff without a glitch immediately I eject from System)

Only if you want it to recognize new stuff imediately. It'll scan for new stuff eventually but sometimes it can take awhile.

SD Card -> DCIM for pictures. I use Astro File Manager to view them without issue. Will try tonight to see if I can see them in the gallery.

Stock Nook Color

Greetings, new to the forums and have a few questions.
Before we get started, I did use the search feature and I couldn't find what I needed.
I have a Nook Color tablet with the new 1.2.0 software upgrade on it. I have only about 8 or 10 ebooks on the tablet and have been reading a lot about this root for Android 3.0.
My question is, if I do not have a MicroSD card, is it possible to back up the nook to a PC using the USB cable that comes with it? I can talk to the Nook (how I flashed it to 1.2.0 with the .zip provided by B&N). Are there any ways that I can use the same cable to backup the whole Nook other than copy/paste on to a hard drive on my computer? I have good computer skills, just do not know if there are hidden information on the Nook that will not be copied in doing this.
Once rooted with Android 3.0, if I have to remove it and put the original OS/software back on to the Nook, can I format the Nook through Windows and copy/paste the stuff I pull off it back on to it?
So basically, in short. I want to backup the Nook to my PC and put Android 3.0 on it, but if ever required, I want to erase Android 3.0 and put it back to stock WITHOUT a MicroSD card.
Thank you,
A botsori
You need a microSD to get honeycomb on there anyway, so just use that and run your backups. Then you can copy your backups to your PC and go nuts with honeycomb. You can reverse the process later if you need to roll back.
But, no, you can't back it up with your USB cable.
Thank you for the quick reply. Guess I will go burn some money
This Nook Color is amazing after I learned it can do sooo much more than read a book!

[Q] Can't recognize internal ROM on NC

I rooted my Nook Color, originally v. 1.3 (with Manual Nooter-4.5.18, -4.6.16). The rooting appeared to be successful, but was unstable in that it wouldn't survive a power-cycle. Eventually, I gave up, and decided to revert to straight B&N Nook. I did this by clearing data, root, system, and running "nook-complete-restore-1.0.1.zip. That worked, but with a couple of big flaws: 1) I now cannot "see" the NookColor internal rom when I plug its usb port into my computer! Cabling, computer software, etc., is in order, since when I have a microSD installed on the NC, it does mount on the computer (Mac), and allows file transfer to-and-from. (Also "invisible" on Linux and MSWin machines.)
2) A consequence is that I cannot copy "generic-sdcard-v1.3.img.zip" to NC for purposes of "upgrading" back to v.1.3; also when I attempt to download any archived books from N&B: the download starts, then abruptly stops, presumably because it can find no internal rom in which to store them.
In short, I've bricked the unbrickable NC! Anybody have any ideas?
Lol you cannot brick the Nook. You are using a firmware that your Nook was not designed to handle.
Flash this with clockwork to update to 1.2 and regain your internal storage: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050520

Can you revert straight to B&N 1.3 stock ROM? Why went all the way down to 1.0.1?
Indeed, koopakido8, it takes more of a Philistine than me to brick a NC! Your diagnosis and remedy were both spot on. Thanks

[Q] FAIL Galaxy Note?

Hello all,
Can somebody confirm that I have a fail Galaxy Note with the following:
1. I cannot play files such as MKV and MP4 which placed directly to my external SD card
2. Those files (MKV/MP4) have to be imported by KIES to my Note to play
3. I have the same problem as describes as in this thread
Thanks!
Download Moboplayer from the market and you should be able to view the files
Didn't help.
I forgot to say: I only can play videofiles which are imported via KIES to internal SD card. Files imported to my external SD card I cannot play! This is so stupid. I think my Note is defect....can somebody confirm this....?
Try players. File size should be less than 4 GB of course.

If you can play MKV with Moboplayer and I couldn't, so my phone is defect, isn't it?

Your card may be defective or worse, a fake. Try testing another card or try loading a very small video file in your current card like maybe a 5-mb video first and see if that works.
i use dice player
mp4 play fine without any issues on the stock
how are you actually transferring the files? are you using usb mode or kies software?
There should not be any need for a 3rd party player for MKV's and MP4's what error does it give you when you play those files?
#4 is caused by a software issue which may or may not be fixed any time soon, some notes dont have this issue.
It gives an error that the format of the file isn't supported.
bet your not letting the files copy over fully and the files are not complete. Are you sure you are letting the mkvs fully finish copying they will take a while because they are normally in excess of 1 GB

Again how are you transferring the files?

If using USB storage, don't forget to do "Safely remove USB drive", because sometimes files don't get copied completely before you eject...
instead of using samsung kies, why not use the usb mode of the note?
a lot less hassle compared to kies.

Plus it's WAY quicker!
Maybe try downloading a video file with the internet app on your phone? You might have some strange filetype codecs

I've tried all the things you described. Even with the USB mode it doesn't work on the Note when I safely disconnect the USB connection. The same file I can play via the external SD card on my pc without any problems, so the file is 100% transfered.
If I convert a MKV to MP4, this MP4 can only plaid by the Note when I transfer via KIES. This is very weird!
My conclusion is that I have fail Note. I think you think the same way...!?
