Screen won't lock, but power button works - Nook Color General

I know the power button is functioning, as it will popup the shutdown dialog if I hold it down, but it no longer locks and turns off the screen. Any ideas? I've tried messing with all the settings I can find in Spare Parts, NookColor Tools, Settings but nothing seems to be making the power button lock the screen. I have rebooted the NC a couple of times now. Also, not having the problem in HC or Froyo. I'm running an autonootered 1.01.

Did you mess with your hard-key? I mean, did you reconfigure your vol + and vol -? You might have messed up the power key.
If not...
Go to your launcher settings and you might be able to redefine what the power button does when pressed (aka turn off screen)

I have, but that was weeks ago. I haven't actually changed any settings on the default OS install in quite some time, aside from messing with Set CPU settings. :/
Anyway -- like I said, long press on the power key works fine, so it is some software setting somewhere.

Anyone? Bueller? This is super irritating.

i experience the same problem, everything worked fine but sudenlly the power button wont lock the screen. another hitn might be that i also mess with cpu speed, cpu master free is the app name

I had the same issue as well..

Buttons quit working / not responding

This is the second Sprint Touch Diamond I've had with this problem, and I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing it. I boot the phone fresh, then when it's done turn off the display with the power button. When I press the power button again, it turns on, and then the buttons stop working. The device is fully usable other than no buttons, including power, work. The display also stays on, and will not turn off after the normal period of time. I also noticed if I hold the power button, the pop-up for a soft reset will come up, but choosing yes does not actually soft reset it.
Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it without bringing it in?
Thanks!

Samsung Captivate Power Button Not Working . FIXED :)

If your phone's power button is in a 'pressed' state, like mine, (turns on automatically when battery is inserted), it is a hardware issue.
Here is a hassle free alternative to turn on the phone when it is in sleep mode, without relying on the power key!! Takes a minute or two only!!
1. Get 'Go launcher' from the app market (play)
2. Get 'Go Locker'
3. Now Enable Go Locker on your device. And you are done!!
When the screen goes black again, Just press the volume button, The screen wakes up!!
Using this method you don't lose the normal functionality of the volume rocker!!
I recalled that I used to have Go Locker on my phone, and that when I pressed the Volume key the screen turned on!!
At that time I found it a little annoying, But now it has turned out to be such a gift!!
* For this method to work, your phone has to be rooted.
The power button is not going to work until the hardware is repaired, I prefer to use this method, because it is a safe and quick method!!
Believe me I looked around the internet and this forum for a fix, The usual method: editing the system files on the phone, and after which the volume button cannot be used to control the volume.
For those looking for a quick fix, just follow my method!
Cheers!
There are also several roms out there that have the volume rocker wake built into the rom without making it completely useless for it intended purpose. As well as several that offer a go to sleep toggle in the notification window so you can lock your phone again.
so this is a hardware issue ? i had been using the go locker i been using but the power button is annoying cus it keep showing the power button options . and killing my battery.
only fix is samsung?
Pretty much every version of cm for cappy has volume rocker wake as an option, because of this common problem. I use app called turn off screen as well.

I had the exact same problem with my Epic Touch 4G. Thought it was the ROM, the overclock, etc. I flashed back to (almost) stock, went back to original clock speeds. I couldn't figure out what it the world was causing the issue, until it got worse. Then, I noticed that even brushing past the power button would wake the screen, and about 10 seconds later the phone would reboot.
Long story short, I bought a replacement power switch, soldered it in place, and have had zero problems since!
Several eBay sellers offer the proper replacement switch you'll need.
(They don't include the required skills to properly desolder/solder it, however. It's a tiny switch - about 4mm x 2mm x 1.5mm, and you'll need a good quality fine-tipped soldering iron.)

power button brings volume up?

I've been using CM9 on the touchpad for a long time without any problem. but recently, whenever I tried to reboot the pad by pushing the power bottom, instead of showing the power menu, I got the volume up menu. I can still use the power button to turn on/off the screen. So, it seems the hardware is still OK. I already updated to the latest nightly, still the same problem. Anyone knows what's going on and how to fix it? At least, is there another way to reboot the pad?
Thanks,

Power button issue

I just discovered yesterday that my power button seem to be not working. Pressing it doesnt lock the screen and long pressing it doesnt bring up the power options. Tried wiping everything and still the issue remains. When I pull my battery and then insert it back the phone boots itself, as if the power button is pressed all the time (even though i can still click it and its not stuck). Ive been using rom toolbox for the power menu but choosing to turn off the phone makes my phone have a screen freeze, all other options work like reboot, fast reboot, reboot recovery etc. Anyone know how to fix this?
Edit: After a couple of days my power button is working again

How did you get it to work? Or did it started working on it's on? Thanks
I've seen that happen on mine, due to a bad USB charge port. Replaced it, problem disappeared.
Any chance your device sometimes thinks it is docked to a docking station?
Inexpensive part to obtain, less than 10 dollars (usd), takes about 15 minutes or less to replace.
In the 2+ years I've had mine, I've gone through 4 of them LOL...I'm hard on charge ports I guess.

It just started working again. When I turned off my phone to place my sim back and it didnt boot up automatically, I knew the power button is working again. Pressed the power button, device booted up and the issue is gone. I dont know if mh device thinks its docked, i dont have a docking station and ive never had problems with my charging port yet.
I've been using my N7000 for 2 years and this thing happened for 3-4 times. The lock button will be like stop working, sometimes it is like being press all the time and the problem will be sorted out by itself. Normally when this happens, the phone will be laggy and will reboot by itself. Is it a common thing for this phone?how do you get your phone fixed Kcube989?

[Q] Power button is not locking/turning off screen but works to bring up power menu.

So this morning I picked up my Note 4, used it normally to check emails, etc, went to turn off/lock screen and it wouldn't respond at all. I held down the power button and then it brings up the power menu, I restarted a few times and still nothing. Is my power button defective or could some setting have automatically changed the settings?
Go to *#0*# and select Sub-Key. Press every physical button on the Note 4 one by one (Volume Up, Volume Down, Home Button, Power Button On, Power Button Off). If the end result is PASS, then you're Power button is fine. Can also be a sticky / tacky power button, or something you modded in the settings.

Just did the test, every button turned a different color, volume up (gray) volume down (green), menu (brown), home (blue) back (purple) , power (red, is this a fail?) but I didnt get any PASS. Is the power button supposed to have 2 colors, one for on and one for off? I tried holding down the power button but that brings up the power menu.
Also noticed that the screen will not dim or turn off automatically.
Update: I ended up doing a reinstall of the stock fw through Odin and it fixed it. I wonder what caused it and where those settings/issue where stored? I had tried doing a reset from within settings, but as I understand, that doesn't clear ALL the data.
I know how it feels when the diagnostic doesn't yield a pass. Glad to hear that reflashing the stock firmware resolved it though. Could have been something deep in the firmware causing this. Keep us updated if it persists again. The power button has been a culprit of problems in the past for many as well in previous Note devices. The final result should have displayed "PASS" on the display, perhaps you didn't complete the task, that's okay. Sometimes simply clearing the cache instead of factory reset could have resolved the problem as well. Samsung is notorious time to time.

I have a Note 4 too and since a few days I have been noticing this issue. The power button doesn't wake the screen up. I have to fiddle around the button a little bit, press it a bit harder sometimes and then it works.
Also noticed that when this happens, I unlock the phone using the Home button and when I try to use the power button then nothing happens. Keeping the power button pressed doesn't give me the reboot/boot options either until I fiddle with it.
The strange this is, one it starts working, i can use it again and again until I leave the phone aside until sometime and then the power button does nothing until i repeat fiddling it.

Also ran the test : *#0*# and select Sub-Key
All buttons work except the power button but again if I press hard and try to nudge the button a little bit, I saw the colour change to RED. No PASS either.
Do you have any xposed modules installed? I had this happen with either gravitybox or wanam when I tried to tinker with the power menus. *3.
No. Everything is stock and not rooted either.
In my case, a complete wipe to factory fixed the issue for me and never had the issue since then, but it kind of sounds like you may have a hardware issue.
that's what I'm thinking too hw issue. But once it starts to work it works perfectly even pressing the button lightly. If the phone's been idle for a while that's when it starts. But anyway, I'll do the basics, factory reset and then bring it over to the carrier shop. Hate to send it away as its not that long ago i got the phone.
Thanks for all the help/comments.
I just started having the same problem myself. I think I'm going good to buy the right now. For the power button and have it installed.

I am having the exact same problem , did you manage to solve it ?
No. But I've been using the phone less as in on holidays and noticed it hadn't been happening much. If issue still persists I'll bring the phone back to the carrier for a repair/replacement as it's still under warranty.
For the first few days power button worked occasionally now it has stopped working completely.

The working of button changes with temperature. With a little heating with hair dryer the button started working.

I agree with the temperature because when I was in holidays the issue didn't happen and Iwas in a hot country with 35 deg C. Weird, so was my Note 4 built for Middle East?!?
My power button has started working 100% normal from falling the hw test earlier.

I did a full factory reset and it appeared to work but after restoring all my apps and using it for a couple of days it started again. Brought it to the carrier to get it fixed as is still under warranty. They said it was a faulty "electrical component" which they replaced. Got the phone back and I restored all the apps. I have the problem again. I don't trust the carrier to have fixed the issue as it was intermitten in the first place. The button works continuously once it's stays working until I leave it aside for a while. I'll have to bring it back again and wait for a week!
I'll keep you posted.
^ blow some hot air with a hair dryer
My note 4 problem is whenever I remove the charger it went out and behave as it wants to start up and as soon as I replaced the charger I can turn it on and it stays on. Someone please help me with this
