I just bought the nook color, what do I do now? Sorry for the stupid question, I am very new to this. All I have done so far is register and update to 1.1 from B&N. My friend told me to look for autonator 2.1.25 (I think), however the one I saw is for version 1.0.1. Any direction you can give is greatly appreciated. Thank You.

If you are on 1.1 you will need to use AutoNooter 3.0 once that is done you will have a rooted nook, with Google Apps installed,
I would also recommend you install a customer Launcher after you root, Like Zeam, or ADW, these can be downloaded from the market.
Edit:Also in answer your question, What to do now? Read a Book!

Play around with it just out of the box and find some things that you do and don't like about it.
Run the appropriate auto-nooter and go fix the stuff you didn't like. I had to install dolphin browser immediately because I didn't like the stock one.
Download all the regular apps that you use. I haven't had a problem with anything not working.
I picked zeam for my launcher. Getting it set up was the hardest part for me because I'm not familiar with how standard Android works. I played around with soft keys for a while to get that o my liking.
You could always read some books. Getting switched back to the stock interface isn't hard.
Get setcpu configured to make it faster. I thought mind was a bit sluggish after rooting it.
Rename the phone packages. I think it helps my battery life.
Eagerly await honeycomb's arrival.

I have messed with Android here and there and drove 45miles to pick up a nook and got home and my laptop died. So from experience what is the most solid rom, I am not rom cracked out yet since I just got it just want to know which one people recommend for the most stability so far, and I am looking at the steps it takes as well. Any suggestions on anything would be greatly appreciated. Running version 1.0.1 .
I would say the rooted 1.1 stock rom to begin with and froyo on sdcard to play around with

thanks reading on how this stuff works
been in windows mobile world for a while and I work with linux daily but.....again laptop just died so will get it going. Thanks reading tutorials.
definitely stock rooted is the way to go for now.
ditto but overclock it.
thanks again guys reading as we speak

Really don't know what version as of yet have to get use to the home button bringing up action/control keys very cool device thanks so much to everyone
Ok about to step it up a bit guys
I like how you guys have the custom home screens without going to the extras, so I am looker for the next one up stable release from you guys expertise.
Some people are loading up alternative launchers like ADW or LauncherPro. Personally I like the stock look. LauncherPro and ADW are great on my phone but on the tablet it looks a bit hokey. I think the best setup is an overclocked stock rom right now but to each his/her own...
I got my nook Saturday. Here is what I did when I got home:
Upgraded to stock ROM 1.1
Rooted with Autonooter 3.0
Did some readin on the NookDevs site and XDA
Loaded Nookie Froyo 0.6.6 on SD

Both options are nice guys, I just want really to add the back button from the soft key option to the main menu and the (menu button). As far as performance it is fine for what I want it to do, no sure I will overclock it if it really hurts battery life, and I was lookin gat Nookie Froyo as well as Autonooter 3.0 since I used the 2.xx version (I am comparing the difference between them). Thanks again guys for the advice
For those who use the stock launcher, is there a way to add apps to the home screen on the stock launcher? I actually MUCH prefer B&N's launcher, but there's so much free real estate there, and I'd love to be able to launch TweetDeck, PerfectViewer, Kindle from there...
dual boot with froyo thats what i did no problems

Thanks for the update lol, I was like dang how long do I have to hold my finger there I am not sure I will dual boot I have enough of that and virtual machines going on in my life as is, I will wait for a new stable realease look the current nooker I am using with 1.0.1.
I have a stock 1.0.0 NC. Haven't rooted it yet. I had it rooted on 1.1 with the autonooter 3.0, but I ended up getting the black screen of death (this is another story altogether). Anyway, I want to root again but I haven't decided if I want to go ahead and try Froyo or just do 1.0.1 rooted or maybe 1.1. I just want to know what the pros/cons of going to froyo or staying with rooted 1.0.1 or 1.1? And then wait until Honeycomb is better put together. My main reason I want to go to Froyo is that I am a medical student and I couldn't get epocrates to work with rooted 1.1. It kept saying my log on info wasn't correct and I found others with the same problem, but I have seen many saying that it works fine in Froyo. Other than that, I just need to surf, gmail, google voice, calender and not much else.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I have done both. If you do Froyo, you do lose the BN software. But you can download Android Nook which is almost the same. It does take a little bit of work to get it almost fully functional as well. Some people have said flash didn't work good for them, it works flawless for me. Couldn't go without it. Some apps don't work though. When I was on rooted stock, Homerun Battle was my go to game. But I can't play it since I've upgraded.
There's no more black bar at the bottom so I remapped the volume keys to Menu and Back. I don't know how people do without it, it's great. The last thing that kinda bothers me about Froyo, is for some reason my touch screen is slightly less responsive. Not a big deal, but wish I had a fix. Keep in mind though, that CM7 stuff is coming out I guess soon so you might want to hold out a little longer.
Sooooo, what is CM7? and why should I wait? Is it a build of Honeycomb? Maybe I should just try to get someone to help me with epocrates?

If you are not familiar with android, clockwork recovery, or bootable cwr I would hold off on cm7 or froyo for now. Autonooter would be the best place for you to start with rooting. Androidtablets.net is a good resource also for nook.

Cm7 is gingerbread build so its like froyo but a bit faster. If you want to change your nooks os i suggest you change it to honeycomb preview v4. All you have to do is burn the provided image to a 4gb sd card and put that into your nook, it keeps your nook stock(in case you dont want to root) but allows you to have honeycomb. To boot back into stock nook just remove the sd card while the nook is off and power it on
Hope this helps

someone asked this same question just recently and all I can tell you is that I have Quick Office on my nook (not pro, it's an older version no longer (or never was) on the market i got a year and a half ago, by the same company) and it works great. I assume pro is just the upgraded version of it, although I can't confirm for sure....it looks almost exactly alike. Also, I use it more to create new documents and not import ones from a computer. I've heard not all formats work on it.

Try rebooting yet? I never got anything to show on Extras without a reboot (after installing apk).
I tried that a few times no luck
I do see it under SU- manage apps it is there!
I'm able to launch it thru task killer, but would like an icon on extras!
I bought the app from the Marketplace.
I bought it for my DroidX and it just works on the NookColor.
I used Titanium Backup to freeze the stock/limited version that comes on the Nook.

hmm did not know titanium was able to freeze an app, I simply use task killer to terminate the read only version and then run full version... Guess I'll just have to use a launcher to get things going.
I actually bought the latest HD version directly from the developer/publisher yesterday (with a promotion it's only $9.99), but it won't install on the NC, presumably because it's built explicitly for 3.0 and I'm on 2.3 (CM7). I saw that there's an APK floating around out there, but given that they're offering a pretty solid office suite for $10, I prefer to give the developer their due. Having said that, if I can't get it to work on my device... Does anyone know if it's possible to get the latest commercial version for tablets to work on NC with CM7?
I'm using the pro version. I can confirm it works perfectly on CM7. The Google docs integration is great. I use mostly spreadsheets and pdf and it's great - I recommend it.

I'm playing around with the HD APK. Having trouble selecting text in word processing documents, though. I can only seem to drag the little pins about 10% of the time.
Got the BN update today and would like to know how to get apps like astro, market, etc to work without rooting. Since it is now 2.2 shouldn't they just load without rooting? Yea, I'm a noobie and tech challenged.
Thanks,
Mike

It will almost certainly be rooted with time. You'll have to have patience until then (or go back to CM7 for now).

My understanding is that EVEN rooting won't allow access to the market.
Based on some threads here, it seems B&N have blocked market access fundamentally in the code, so while we can get admin rights we cannot install google apps or other market apps after rooting. (I may be wrong though..)
So it seems that Froyo/CM7 is the way to go for now, for those who want the full tablet functionality. The only problem with that is the B&N nook market reader app sucks compared to stock and there is no way of porting the stock reader into those ROMs.
not sure how B&N would do that, i mean with root access we have the ability to change anything. I guess we'll have to wait and see. Even if this is true, I'm sure SOMEONE out there will find a work around.
What do we need the Market for (It's preferred I know, and to access previously purchased apps) if we can use the Amazon Appstore?
I don't think you'd be able to use the Amazon app store, either, if what they say is true.
OK, I am going to be getting a couple NCs for the wife and I. So I have been doing a lot of reading and want to make sure I have a handle on evrtything. I have decided that CM7 is the way to go. If I am understanding correctly I basically create a CM7 image on an SD Card (cheap Sandisk seems to work best???) and then I can run it from the SD card without installing it on the internal memory of the NC. That way I can pull the SD card, reboot and have a stock NC. Is that right? Will the performance suffer from running it from the SD card? Are there benefits to installing on the internal memory? Also, if I do install it to the internal memory, how do you use it as a normal NC? Do you just get the Android Nook app? How does that compare to the actual Nook software? Do you lose any functionality? My wife will use hers primarily as an e reader whereas mine will be a tablet first. Does anyone have experience using different browsers like Skyfire and Opera? Those are what I use a lot on my phone. I have seen the name Dolphin HDused alot, but I don't know anything about it. I am sorry for all the questions and if my terminology is not 100% accurate. That is correct; with one exception. CM7 will mount the "Media" partition, and changes there will be reflected on the stock OS (this partition just stores your files, pictures, music, etc; nothing related to the system).

Yes, performance will suffer. I used to run from SD card, until i finally gave up and tried internal. Internal is much faster, and of course makes it easier to use you SD card for pure storage.

From what i have seen, you will lose the "Read to me" functionality, and the look and feel of the market version is different of that of the stock version. But, by using CM7 (or rooting stock), you can gain access to Kindle and Google books, which kind of makes up for it.

Opera is by far the best browser; it is the only browser with renders web pages with the GPU; this is what allows smooth scrolling and page views (like the iPad has). Dolphin is nothing more than a skin of the stock browser, and isn't worth worrying about.

The Android Nook app loses:
* Read To Me
* Shelves
* A quick shortcut to the current book you're reading
It gains a couple of features: a fancy page-turn animation, and a true black & white "night" mode. (The stock reader's night mode is more of an off-white on dark gray, if I remember right.)
If your wife has a lot of nook books, she may really miss the shelves feature. Without it all books are listed on one page, ordered by Title, Author or Most Recent. That's most recently purchased, not most recently read.
With no shortcut, every time you return to the app you have to scroll through all the books you have downloaded to find the one you're currently reading. That could be annoying if you've got a few dozen or more loaded.
I get around both problems by using a third-party reader. But to use it, I have to strip the DRM from the books I own, which is at best a gray area legally.
Most people who read a lot will probably get more out of a stock nook, or better still, a nootered nook. If it's nootered (rooted), you get all the features of the stock reader, as well as the ability to download any number of other applications including Kindle and Overdrive (the library lending app.)

Thank you very much for the input. Your answers have highlighted the fact that I need to do a lot more research. I am not even sure what the NC can do out of the box. While the wifey will use it primarily as a reader, she also wants to be able to play games and download apps. Can this still be done on the stock OS? Can you install a different browser (opera) on the stock OS? I've seen the term "rooted stock" but haven't read up on it much since I figured I'd just have to root them to do what we both want. I'm guessing "rooted stock" is somewhere between being rooted and keeping the stock OS. Would this allow using the native reader intetface while still allowing access to apps via the Android market? If I can get it so she has a nice browser, can play games (Angry Birds, etc) and keep the native reader (which she really likes) that would be perfect. BTW, before anyone starts yelling "USE THE SEARCH NOON" like they do on some forums I have visited, I know these answers are probably all on this forum somewhere and I am continuing to research on my own. I have been and will be reading a ton of old posts, etc. But, it is also helpful to have one thread to list all of the questions that pop into my head.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I was new to Android a couple months ago and hesitant to root so I decided to put CM7 on an sdcard. I bought a cheap card and the thing worked but it was agonizingly slow. I bought a Sandisk 8GB class 4 and it works GREAT - very fast. I have never overclocked (haven't gotten the nerve for that yet) and it is very speedy for my needs. I later rooted stock which is what I recommend for your wife. You put a launcher on (I like zeam) and then you have your B&N shelves and access to the Android market as well. BTW, you can also get the Amazon Appstore and check it out daily because they put up a free app every day - very cool.
Good luck with your decision. I love my Nook!
Cool, so it looks like it'll be CM7 for me and nootered for her.
One more question since I have your attention. Is there a way to tether the NC to my Droid X and connect to the internet? My Droid X is totally stock and I have no desire to root it or mod it in any way. I have used PDAnet to tether to my laptop, so I'm looking for something similar to that.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I can tether my Win Mobile phone (getting an Android phone as soon as my contract runs out!) to my NC. My phone creates an ad hoc connection and I had to make a small change on the Nook to get it to work. I'm pretty sure you will have no problem. Just search and you will find the details specific to your phone.
The only (wireless) tethering you can do WITHOUT rooting is the paid Verizon service. No other wireless rooting will work (all need superuser). I gotta ask though - any reason you don't want to root the X? Its not really anything different from rooting your nook..

I guess it's really just fear. If I brick my phone, I am royally screwed. If I brick the Nook, it would suck, but it's more of a toy anyway. I know it's probably very safe and easy, but I just keep thinking of the horror stories I read when I thought about rooting my Q9m back in the day. That said it is very likely that once I root the Nook, I will end up rooting my phone. Baby steps
